For those of you who would like to remember the good old days in Austin, the year 1935 was not so kind.

After a record 20 inches of rain, a devastating flood destroyed the original Austin Dam. In addition, as Pemberton Heights was being developed during the depression of the '30s, the Owners advertised our neighborhood’s “beautiful Castle must be sold at once”. Originally costing $16,000, the Owners were willing to sell for $8,000.

Despite these two tragedies, Austin would prosper and other homes would continue to be built ensuring the area would become one of Austin’s best neighborhoods. A few additional facts about life during the early 30’s include:• Average cost of new house $3,450.00 • Average wages per year $1,600.00 • Average cost for house rent $22.00 per month• A gallon of gas cost 10 cents • A loaf of bread cost 8 cents • A pound of hamburger meat cost 11 cents • Average new car cost $625.00 • A ladies swimming costume cost $6.95

While the area was being subdivided and new homes being built, the following events were happening nationwide:• Fred Astair’s Cheek to Cheek spent 18 weeks as number 1 on the

charts

• Unemployment was running about 20% nationwide • First canned beer goes on sale

• Parker Brothers releases the board game Monopoly • Penguin produces the first paperback books • Amelia Earhart flies solo across the Pacific • The China Clipper makes the first Pacific Airmail delivery • The great Labor Day Category 5 Hurricane with winds approaching 185 mph strikes Florida Keys on September 2nd • President Roosevelt signs the Revenue Act, often referred to as the Wealth Tax Act

•President Roosevelt signs the US Social Security Act, providing unemployment compensation and pensions for the elderly. • Eugene Schueller, a French Chemist, invents the first sunscreen, he went on to found the L’Oreal Line of Cosmetics. • BBC starts the first public television broadcasts in London

• The National Basketball League (NBL) was created by three corporations: General Electric, Firestone and Goodyear.

old and new, learn about neighborhood activities, and discuss area concerns. We are changing the date for the August lunch to include those who have had difficulty making the Wednesday date. We hope this change attracts more of our neighbors to come and exchange ideas and information. We welcome all neighbors, especially new neighbors!

Department to answer questions and discuss issues relating to safety in our neighborhood. We will also be discussing proposed revisions to the application process for historic zoning

Revisions Proposed to the Historic Zoning and Tax

The City is proposing revisions to the applications for historic tax exemptions and historic zoning in our neighborhood.

One change to the application process for Historic Zoning will require the Owner of the property to apply for the Zoning: No longer will the Historic Landmark Commission, the Planning and Zoning Commission, or the Council be allowed to initiate historic zoning. This will ensure that the property Owner is aware and agreeable to the change to historic zoning.

For the last three years area neighbors have joined together to fund the PHNA Security Program.

In calendar year 2011 approximately 230 households (out of a total of approximately 640 homes) funded the provision of 20 hours of weekly patrols by Austin Police Department officers and 40 hours of weekly patrols during times of perceived higher threat and neighborhood travel.

In addition, the Security Program has maintained the Away From Home List which ensures that your home is checked by the Patrol Officers in your absence.

Please consider continuing your participation in funding this program or, if you are new to the neighborhood or have not previously participated, joining your neighbors.

Sidewalk Funds AvailableBetty Trent, AIA LEED AP

The city now requires new construction and remodeling projects to provide new sidewalks or pay a fee in lieu of installing the sidewalks during construction.

Due to the recent neighborhood construction, there are some funds available now for the city to install sidewalks where preferred by the residents.

If you have any ideas on locations in the area where sidewalks would make walking safer, please send them to [email protected].

I’ll make a list of suggestions submitted to discuss at the next Board meeting and then present to the City.

As a parent, there’s no doubt that back-to-school season requires a lot of effort to get your kids all set for the challenges of the classroom. But it’s also an important time to consider your child’s health, says Daniel Howard, M.D., a pediatrician with The Austin Diagnostic Clinic (ADC).

“From making sure all of the proper vaccinations have been administered on schedule, to getting their kids back on ‘school year’ sleep schedules, health is obviously a huge consideration for parents with school-age children,” Dr. Howard says.• Vaccinations 101. Children should receive a variety of vaccinations

and booster shots to prevent them from getting many serious and highly contagious diseases.

• Hearing and vision tests. Consider getting your child’s hearing and vision tested before they begin school to prevent learning challenges in the classroom.

• Health information. Parents should be prepared to provide schools with a list of emergency contact information that includes telephone numbers for parents, close family, pediatrician, and dentist.

• Diet and sleep. Healthy eating is a critical part of a child’s physical

and mental development and can help curb the risk of childhood obesity. Sleep is also essential—kids should get between eight to 11 hours per day, depending on their age.
