Peggy Lui was born on May 10, 1930 in Tucson, Arizona to HOY CHU DON and MAUDE LAI DON. She was preceded in death by her big sisters BETTY DON LEE and MARJORIE JEAN DON WONG, as well as her husband of 54 years, EDMUND LUI. She left behind her son Rodney and her daughter-in-law Christine, as well as numerous in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

The Don family moved to San Francisco from Tucson early in Peggy’s child-hood. San Francisco had been her hometown, where she attended public and Chinese schools, had her first part- time job during her high school years, and where she attended Munson Business College after graduation. She worked as a secretary and also as an assistant supervisor for an insurance company in the automobile casualty department for many years. She volunteered at the San Francisco Lung Association doing Chinese translations. Alongside her mom, she taught English in the evenings to Cantonese-speaking “war brides” so that they could earn their citizenship to stay in the United States.

On September 16, at the age of 32, Peggy married the love of her life, Edmund Lui. Their one and only child, Rodney, was born three years later. Their family grew with the addition of a daughter-in-law, Christine, whom Rodney mar-ried in 1996. It was in Foster City, California where she and Edmund lived most of their lives.

When Peggy got married her attention shifted from working in the office to doing the “real work” of being a full-time homemaker. She was devoted in raising her only child to be respectful and polite, to keep a neat home, and encouraged him to pursue his interests, whatever that maybe at the time. She doted on her husband that until the day she was overtaken by her illness, Edmund had not known how to cook, how to clean the house, or how to do the laundry. In addition to being a homemaker, she was her son’s “unpaid” administrative assistant when Rodney started his DJ business. Often, the DJ gigs were booked on the spot, as Rodney would later hear from his clients, simply because of “how nice the lady on the phone” was.

Peggy loved and enjoyed entertaining people at their home. She and her husband hosted Thanksgiving and Christmas parties for the Lui clan of over 50 people for at least two decades. These holiday parties became annual events for the Lui family. With their friends, Peggy and Edmund hosted BBQ parties in the summer while Rodney and Christine took care of the grill. But of all these annual celebrations, Mother’s Day celebration was special to her because being a mother was the role that defined her the most.
