I always want to start this introduction by remarking how surprised I am that we are at the beginning of a new year, which is really quite peculiar as it comes round, regular as clockwork, every twelve months. January can be an odd month. On one hand there’s the optimism that goes with a new beginning and a sense of excitement about what 2015 will bring, particularly if a big change like getting married or leaving High School is on the cards, as is the case for several Peebles Life relatives. On the other hand, it’s a blinking long month, full of short days, a long wait till payday and, unlike December, there aren’t the bright lights and festive fun of Christmas to look forward to. It’s also a time when many of us choose to focus on making changes to our lives through New Year’s resolutions and this month the Big Issue takes a look at this subject.

Looking at things to do to brighten up January, Music in Peebles share details of what to expect from their concert and I would like to abuse my position once more by mentioning Peeblesshire Agricultural Society’s Annual Dance. This is on Friday 30th January at Peebles Hydro and, with tickets only £35 a head including a five-course meal and dancing, it’s an absolute bargain, open to everyone. We’d love to see some new faces enjoying the evening!

Amongst other things going on in town, we have an invitation from Tweeddale Ramblers as well as one to find out more about a huge mural planned for Pennel’s Courtyard which sounds most intriguing! We also have details of a coaching academy for young netball players, one of the sports putting Peebles on the map. Cycling is obviously the other local sport drawing national and international attention and we are delighted to help celebrate the success of both Tweedlove and Tour o the Borders. In our regular features we have not one but two political columns from Christine Grahame, MSP and David Mundell, MP as well as our regular reports from the Community Centre, Peebles Garden, the Pensioners Association, the Silver Band and the Rugby Club. If you represent an organisation and would like to involve the local population in your activities, then please do get in touch and we would be delighted to add you to this long list!

Finally the team at Peebles Life would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has either stopped us in the street or contacted us in other ways to let us know what you think of the magazine – it really is most useful to know where we are going right and where we are (occasionally!) going wrong. We would like to end by wishing you and yours a very happy New Year and wish you every success in your New Year’s Resolutions!

Jacqui

Big Issue It’s an age thing when January comes round about two minutes after last January did, with us all wishing each other a happy New Year, whisky in hand, and singing Auld Lang Syne whilst wearing our best tartan (sorry, I’ve confused reality with the TV again!). New Years resolutions are made, often the same ones as last year (which fell by the wayside on the 10th of January) and we promise to do and be better in 2015. We swear that we will drop a dress size, give up smoking, take more exercise and our goals are almost always about improving ourselves. Peebles Life, however, would like to put forward some more community minded goals.

1. Local Spirit. You only have to look at the large number of people on the High Street on Beltane Saturday to know that Peebles is a town that is abundant in a sense of belonging. This spirit needs to be encouraged throughout the year and to extend to everyone. Members of any community can feel isolated and it doesn’t take much to offer a smile or a quick word in passing.

2. Shop Local. The High Street is as full of shops as it has been for a long time with few empty premises. However the economy is still fragile and it’s easy to get sucked into the offers that the big chains can afford, bypassing our independent retailers. If we all do even just a little bit more of our shopping in

Peebles, then hopefully both the long established and the new shops will be around for a long time to come.

3. Support Local Business. It’s not just the shops that need our support. Peebles is lucky to have a vibrant business community (just look at how Cavalry Park has grown). If you can use a local tradesman or business, it keeps jobs in our community, offers long-term prospects for the younger generation and keeps our local economy healthy.

4. Think Positive. We may not like certain decisions that have been made in the town in the past – too much new housing, the wrong site for the new school, a lack of planning in road closures and repair work. – but we don’t live in a perfect world so instead of continuing to look at the downsides and negatives why not consider the benefits – new townsfolk to add to the vibrancy of Peebles, a great learning resource for our children, no cars stuck in a massive hole on Kingsmeadows Road that appeared out of nowhere…..

5. Don’t Litter. There are lots of bins around town (or even in our own houses) so let’s stop dropping used chewing gum on the pavement or throwing rubbish out our car windows – it’s not really that hard and the benefits of a beautiful

town and countryside are well worth a little effort!

6. Support Local Events. Throughout the year passionate groups of volunteers work tirelessly to put on concerts, exhibitions, festivals, shows, coffee mornings – the list is pretty much endless. Do we always need to head for the bright lights of the big city for entertainment? Why not resolve to go along to at least one or two events you have never been to before this year, it might turn out to be fantastic!

7. Give Something Back. Throughout Peebles, there are a huge number of organisations helping and supporting those who are in need, whether it be of material goods, of company or even of guidance. Perhaps this is the year to volunteer to be a mentor to with a local youth group or to help out with the Foodbank, the Pensioner’s Association or one of the charity shops? There’s bound to be at least one group who could benefit from your skills no matter how much (or little) time you have to spare.

New Year’s resolutions are notoriously easy to make and, equally, notoriously difficult to keep – given that there is strength in numbers we are bound to succeed if we all just make a small change to benefit the wider community!

What a difference 5 years makes! I find it hard to believe that five years ago Peebles Old Age Pensioners Association was on the brink of closure and now we have a vibrant membership of around 80 who enjoy an interesting and varied programme of speakers. Three years ago, to coincide with our move to the Rugby Club for meetings, we also dropped the “Old Age” from the name of the group, which many thought discouraged potential members. With our move to larger premises, membership grew substantially and in the autumn of 2013, we had to take the unusual decision to temporary close the membership and implement a waiting list. We have now re-opened membership so if you would like any information about joining us, please call me on the number below.

We started 2014 with a brief AGM in February followed by some poems and stories from our very good friend Wilma Barrett. It is always a great pleasure to welcome Wilma to our meetings and she is always eagerly anticipated. The March meeting was attended by Sinead Murray, Clinical Associate in Applied Psychology and Louise Keir, Trainee Clinical Psychologist with their talk on Stress Management,

which was very interesting and informative. Our guest speaker in April was Heather Smith from Age Scotland with her talk on Pension Reforms. In May, we welcomed Stuart Laidlaw from The Dam Good Jam Company, who is one of my favourite guest speakers, being completely addicted to the hot chilli jams he produces! And finally our special guests at the June meeting were Donald and John Swanson with their Filmshow of old Beltane Photos. This was such a treat for our members and was enjoyed enormously by those present.

The autumn session began with the September meeting when we welcomed Elaine Thornton-Nicol with her fascinating talk on the history of the (W)RVS. Despite a very busy schedule, we were delighted to welcome The Lord Smith of Kelvin to the October meeting to talk about his role as the Chair of the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games. We were shown a very interesting presentation with some behind the scenes photographs and facts, which was enjoyed by all present. For the November meeting; we welcomed Jean Proudfoot and her husband Andrew from Borders Deaf & Hard of Hearing Network, with a

display and demonstration of equipment.

As well as a guest speaker at each meeting, we are often visited by our local community police officer PC Chris Burnside, who takes a great interest in the welfare of our members, for which we are extremely grateful. Another regular visitor is Amanda Renwick who is a Building Community Capacity Worker for Scottish Borders Council, who comes to share her latest initiatives.

And so to our Christmas Lunch, which was held at the Green Tree Hotel in early December. As usual we were treated to a superb lunch with impeccable service from Lorna Vannan and her staff, who look after us all so well. For our after lunch entertainment, we were delighted to welcome the multi award winning magician Gary James, who we can say with confidence was one of the best magicians that we had ever seen! All in all this was a wonderful day, which was enjoyed by all present.

The first meeting of the New Year will be on Wednesday, 18 February 2015, which will also be our AGM. Guest speaker to be announced in next month’s Peebles Life. Laura Scott (Secretary) 0781 3095 761 / 01721 723430

Now that the days are lengthening, many of you will be turning your attention to outdoor pursuits. Tweeddale Ramblers offer a great variety of walks, from short morning strolls, returning in time for lunch, to medium distance walks, to more demanding ventures. No map reading experience is necessary, as there is always a dedicated leader, who is prepared to get you home safely, happy and satisfied, while sometimes providing amusing commentary.

Most outings are on Sundays, usually starting at 10am from Kingsmeadows Car Park, and a brief description of what is on offer is always listed under “What’s On” in Peebles Life, allowing you to choose a walk suitable for your ability.

Sometimes the start point is a car journey away, but your own personal transport is not required,

as car sharing is the norm. Boots, suitable clothing and a packed lunch are appropriate, and further information can be obtained from David Baird [email protected] or 01721 720275, or just turn up on the day.

It is not necessary initially to be a member of the Ramblers Association, but if you find camaraderie in our group, you may wish to join to benefit from our other activities, including weekends away, annual summer Barbecue and a Christmas Lunch.

An Invitation from Tweeddale Ramblers

Doorstep crime remains the top national priority for trading standards in Scotland. It is carried out by cruel, unscrupulous and organised criminal groups who deliberately prey on the most vulnerable in society, predominantly the elderly population. Doorstep criminals are mobile and often work cross border with many perpetrators being well known across different council areas. There are significant problems of under reporting with this crime with reasons ranging from embarrassment, to not knowing

who to report to, to the victim not realising that they have been the subject of a crime.

Winter can be a particularly opportunistic time for doorstep criminals who take advantage of the bad weather to instil fear into their victims that if they don’t sort out the damage now, it could cost much more in the future.

The ‘Good Neighbours Stop Rogue Traders’ campaign launched on 3 November 2014 and encouraged the

families, friends and neighbours of potential victims to report any concerns they have immediately. Whilst the formal campaign has now concluded, it is vital that the key messages continue to be reinforced. The Trading Standards Scotland team is encouraging all communities to remain vigilant against this type of crime and to look out for the most vulnerable in our societies and raise the alarm if you think doorstep criminals are operating in your area.

Signs that unwanted doorstep callers may be operating in your area include:• Traders cold calling in the area

• A builder’s van is parked nearby, particularly one that doesn’t include a company name or contact details

• Building or maintenance work on a neighbour’s garden or house starts unexpectedly

• Poor quality work is visible on the roof, driveway or property

• Your neighbour appears anxious or distressed

• Your neighbour visits the bank, building society, or post office more frequently, particularly if they are accompanied by a trader

The campaign aims to empower neighbours to take action when they fear rogue traders are in the area by:

• Asking their neighbour in private - in person or on the phone - if things are OK

• If they are displeased, suggest calling a relative or carer on their behalf

• Noting any vehicle registration numbers

• Keeping hold of any flyers you have received through your door

• Asking if the trader has left any paperwork and putting it in a clean food bag

• If you suspect a crime, call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06, or your local trading standards office

• If the situation with the trader becomes volatile, call the police immediately;

• Always report any suspicions you may have, you are never wasting anybody’s time.

Contact Laura Jamieson, Policy and Improvement Manager for Trading Standards Scotland on 0141 577 3320 or [email protected] to find out more.

Chamber music concerts are inevitably dominated by the work of European composers, and with so much wonderful music from which to choose, it’s easy to understand why. But to get the New Year off to an exciting start, Music in Peebles reaches out far beyond the boundaries of Europe to bring music inspired by Indian ragas. In a real musical Grand Tour there will also be more familiar pieces from Germany and Russia as well as one from even closer to home.

Naomi & Fali PavriJanuary’s guests are two of Scotland’s finest chamber musicians, the husband and wife cello and piano duo, Naomi and Fali Pavri.

Naomi (formerly Naomi Boole-Masterson) is widely known as a member of the celebrated Scottish Ensemble, whilst Fali is a renowned teacher and a professor at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland.

Both have also toured the world as concerto soloists and chamber musicians with a variety of ensembles as well as performing in their own exciting duo. Both have also featured in many recordings and have appeared frequently on BBC Radio 3.

The MusicNaomi and Fali have chosen two of the great Romantic sonatas for cello and piano; the first of two written by Brahms and the only one written by Rachmaninov. It is a source of great regret that neither of these composers wrote a cello concerto, as their affinity for the instrument is clear in these sonatas. Both bring out the rich colours and singing quality of the sound, nowhere more than in the lyrical and passionate slow movement of Rachmaninov’s sonata – in effect, a song without words.

Alongside these established masterpieces are more recent works from Scotland and India. John Mayer was born in Kolkata and in his eight movement suite ‘Prabhanda’, from 1982, he brings together Indian and Western classical traditions. It is a colourful, approachable work in which the cello and piano move into territory more often associated with the tabla and sitar.

The concert opens with a short piece from 1998 in which Sally Beamish evokes the ever-changing effects of natural light from sunrise to sunset around her Scottish home.

Looking for a Bargain? It’s still not too late to save money on your concert-going. A ‘half season’ membership gives admission to all four remaining concerts in the season (including this one) for only £36. This offers a great way to enjoy top-quality live music right here in Peebles.

Pausing for breath whilst exuberantly entertaining the public recently at Whitmuir as part of the ‘Rapt in Winter’ arts trail, members of InChorus took time out to promote their ‘Beat the Winter Blues’ concert. This will take place at Peebles Old Parish Church on January 31st at 7.30 pm.Assisting the choir in staging the charity event will be representatives from the Peeblesshire Youth Trust, the charity which works in partnership with schools and parents, offering support to children and their families.Taking part on stage, alongside the choir, will be groups from Nomad

Beat, the charity run Peebles music school.Inchorus’ Musical Director, Aly Skidmore, said, “I am delighted that Nomad Beat has agreed to be part of the InChorus concert. There is a wealth of musical talent in Peeblesshire and it is great that music and charity groups can work together to put on a varied show for the community.”The choir promises some new

pieces, some old favourites, and songs which have taken them in a slightly different direction. As always, InChorus assures audience members that they will be thoroughly entertained.Tickets cost £8 for adults and £5 for concessions (pre-school children are free). These are available from choir members, and from Monday January 5th at Graham McGrath, Outfitters and Tailors, Eastgate, Peebles.

Firstly, a happy and prosperous 2015 to all our readers and a special thanks to all our sponsors and supporters for their help and encouragement throughout 2014.

December was a busy time for the Band as we played carols on the High Street most weekends and carried out our traditional tour of the town on Christmas Eve. However, the big event in December was our Christmas concert which took place before a large audience in the Burgh Hall. With musical director and master of ceremonies, Stevie Baird, in charge the evening got under way with a rumbustious rendition of Darrol Barry’s “A Christmas Adventure”. The night continued with a wide selection of Christmas favourites which also involved the obligatory audience participation in “Away in a Manger” and “Jingle Bells”. A high spot was a beautiful rendition of Alan Fernie’s arrangement of “In the Bleak Midwinter” played by solo horn (and Cornet for 2014) Kevin Smith. Our regular guest stars, Kingsland School Choir, were in terrific voice and gave a confident and mature performance under their conductor, Caroline Bellville. It is always a pleasure to have the school choir with us and they make a

big contribution to the festive atmosphere of the concert. No concert is complete without the participation of our Junior /Development Band, and once again they did us proud playing a number of Christmas melodies under the direction of conductor Daniel Williamson. The concert closed in fine fashion with Slade’s “Merry Christmas Everybody”.

Unfortunately the concert was Daniel’s last official engagement as conductor of the Development Band as he is now about to start training as a paramedic and will not have sufficient time to continue with the Band. We would like to thank Daniel for all the tremendous work he has done with the junior/development band over the last three years. His ability to enthuse and inspire the kids will be a hard act to follow. Nevertheless, a replacement for Daniel is required, so if anyone reading this article has the necessary musical skills, and would like to get involved in tutoring the next generation of brass players, then please get in touch.

Now that we are in January, the Band is turning its attention to practicing the music for the Scottish Championships in March. The test piece this year is entitled “Evolution: Five

States of Change” written by that prolific composer of brass band music, Philip Sparke. Commissioned for the Dutch National Championships in 2011 it is written in five sections. Each movement represents an element interlinked to an emotion and they are entitled: Earth- Meditation; Metal-Sorrow; Water-Fear; Wood-Anger and Fire-Joy. Each movement evolves from the musical elements at the end of the previous one. Based on aspects of Chinese philosophy the composer thought that fusing five elements with five emotions would provide an “effective emotional journey for a piece of music” Time will tell if we can evoke that emotional journey although, hopefully, sorrow and anger won’t feature too often!

We are looking to recruit cornets and percussionists, so if you can play brass or the “skins” and are interested in playing in a band then then we would really like to hear from you. Of course, as always, if you would like to learn to play a brass instrument (age is no restriction) then please get in touch. You can contact the band secretary through our website.

In 1914 Elsie Inglis offered the services of Scottish women doctors and nurses to the British army and was sent packing. The Serb and French armies however welcomed them and the fascinating story of the Scottish women’s Hospitals began.

The story of their contribution during the First world War will be told in a lecture by Alan Cumming in the Chambers Room of the Chambers Institution on 19th January at 2pm.

Local artist Michael Jessing has produced an original artwork intended to become a huge mural that will transform the blank gable end of the Bake House in Pennel’s Courtyard, Peebles, into a colourful pageant of Peebles history, a wall of colour featuring historic Peebles characters from King David to a family on the High Street today.

This afternoon event is an opportunity to meet Michael and share his enthusiasm as he talks about the inspiration for The Peebles Mural and the process of producing it. The artwork was commissioned by Peebles Creative Place 2014. Fundraising

continues to prepare the site and translate the image from paper into a permanent outdoor artwork.

In forty years as an artist, New York born Michael has used his art to express his responses to personal and social issues, creating poetic visual narratives, journeys within a figurative format. He is influenced by artists such as William Blake, Goya, Stanley Spencer, and Botticelli.

In 2007 he painted three large gilded murals of A Procession of Angels for St. Peter’s Church in Peebles and, more recently, he has completed a twenty eight foot long outdoor mural

celebrating the Labour Movement in Prestonpans. His illustrations to the complete Book of Psalms have been exhibited widely including in York Minster Library, Chichester Cathedral, Wells Cathedral and Carlisle Cathedral.

Discuss the Peebles Mural with artist Michael Jessing on Saturday 31 January at 2pm in the Anne Younger Studio, Eastgate Theatre, Peebles.

Please book your ticket on 01721 725777 or in person at box office. Entry is by donation, which will be added to project funds.

2014 was a momentous year. The referendum was the most important political event in my lifetime and the level of public engagement we saw during that debate is something of which we can all be proud. The local debates, particularly the one at Peebles High School, were the highlights for me. As someone who campaigned to keep Scotland as part of our United Kingdom, I respected the passion of those who campaigned for independence, but was delighted by the outcome.

The result was decisive, especially locally, and now it’s time to move on. I am sure 2015 will see expeditious progress in implementing the Smith Commission proposals for significant new powers for the Scottish Parliament and I will be playing my part in making that happen. However, let’s in 2015 make the political debate in Scotland, as we approach a UK General Election in May, be about what we do with the powers we have to make Scotland better, rather than always about the constitution. For me, as someone who has volunteered and travelled extensively in Sierra Leone, the other significant and emotional event of the year was seeing the heartbreaking devastation Ebola has caused, just as that country was getting back on its feet. We can all be proud

of the British Aid effort and local generosity in giving to the cause I hope the year ahead will see progress in combatting that deadly disease.

Locally, we face challenges in the year ahead too. In December we learned that NHS Borders are reviewing the future of Hay Lodge Hospital in Peebles. I have to say I was surprised and concerned to learn that the future of community hospitals in the Borders was going to be reviewed again. Given the relatively short time since the previous review, the implication is that there is going to be some change suggested.

I believe a reduction in services at Hay Lodge Hospital would be totally unacceptable to the local community. I wrote to NHS Borders Medical Director Dr Sheena MacDonald seeking clarification of the plans and restating my opposition to any reduction in services . Unfortunately NHS Borders haven’t been able to give me that reassurance and closure or service reduction has not been not ruled out.

Local people have repeatedly made clear the value they place on the services provided at Hay Lodge Hospital in Peebles, and tell me any changes that mean people from Tweeddale having to travel further afield for care and other health services would

be most unwelcome, not just for patients, but their families and friends. Particularly for our ageing population, it’s important to keep services as local as possible . I can see no circumstances in which a reduction in existing services would be acceptable locally. We need to stand up against increasing centralisation of health and other services. Just because this is a rural area, it doesn’t mean people aren’t entitled to receive services close to where they live. I still hope NHS Borders can assure me and my constituents that there is no threat to Hay Lodge.; indeed it would be good to hear that any plans would be to enhance, not reduce services and that is what I, along with my Council colleagues Keith Cockburn and Gavin Logan, will be arguing for during the consultation being proposed. I do urge every one locally to take part.

I would be pleased to hear your views on this or any other issue of concern or assist you with any matter I can. I hold regular surgeries in Peebles. For details see local press, visit my website davidmundell.com or call my office on 01683 222746.

The BridgeLatest news from The Bridge TweeddaleThe Bridge is part of a national network of Councils for Voluntary Service. We aim to represent and support the voluntary sector and to assist local organisations to get together for common purposes. We look to enable local people to gain access to decision-making processes which affect their lives and their communities.

IF YOU CAN DRIVE, YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!Regular readers will have noticed that an appeal for volunteer drivers has been a prominent part of these articles for many months now. We are always looking to recruit new drivers for Tweed Wheels, our Community Transport Initiative, but we are particularly keen to do so now as our regular pool of drivers has depleted somewhat recently. The more drivers we have the more we are able to support the people in our communities who rely on us so, if your New Year’s Resolution is to do something useful and you have some spare time and enjoy driving, why not consider becoming one of our volunteer drivers?

You can drive for local community groups, using our 15-seater wheelchair accessible minibus, or for individuals, with our 6-seater wheelchair accessible community car. We will provide you with appropriate training and support and out-of-pocket expenses and you will be free to drive as often or as little as you wish. Half-day training courses take place regularly. To find out more contact Rosa or Anne at here at The Bridge at the number below or by email:

[email protected] .

Glossary of TermsWhen I first joined The Bridge over two years ago I entered a world of acronyms and strange terminology! Now that I’m getting to know what some of it means I thought it would be good to share this with readers of Peebles Life. So I am covering a few terms each month and hope that some of you will find it helpful if not enlightening! The following terms relate to three of the most common legal structures for community and voluntary groups:

Unincorporated AssociationThis is a simple legal structure, with no statutory rules, which is best suited to small organisations who do not employ staff or own property and whose annual income is relatively small. An unincorporated association has no legal identity separate from its members. This brings the risk that members of the management committee could be personally liable for any debts which the organisation is unable to meet from its own resources.

Company Limited by GuaranteeThis is a legal structure suitable for not-for-profit organisations and charities. As a legal entity the company can employ staff and enter contracts, but there is a limited liability of £1 per member in the event of the company going into liquidation. The management committee is officially known as the Board of Directors and the Company must report annually to Companies House. A Charitable Company Limited by Guarantee

must report both to Companies House and OSCR (Office of the Charity Regulator).

SCIO (Scottish Charitable Incorporated OrganisationThis is a relatively new legal structure which can be adopted by community groups who are, or are eligible to be, a registered charity. It provides the personal security afforded to a company limited by guarantee whilst only being accountable to one body, namely OSCR.

Please call The Bridge if you want to find out more about these legal structures and others.

FundingThe Scottish Council for Voluntary Organisations (SCVO) has a new grant website called Funding Scotland. It lists over 800 records of funds which help Scottish projects. It’s a simple process to register and use of the resource is free. Go to http://www.fundingscotland.com/.

SERVICED OFFICE SPACES AVAILABLE.The Volunteer Resource Centre is the office base for the staff of The Bridge. Some people think that January is the coldest, longest, most boring month of the year. The same people generally don’t think much of February either. But I’d like to try to put a little shine on January if I can.

Winter defines the climate in the cool temperate latitudes. The mainly deciduous forest, stretching around the globe at the mid-latitudes in both hemispheres, is one of the richest, most fertile habitats on the planet.

In winter decayed vegetation breaks down to feed the soil, creating rich ground. There are about 150 to 200 growing days and enough rain to grow crops intensively. When spring comes, plants receive cues to come into growth and the food they produce supports us all.

Nothing would be the same without winter: it’s the cold that encourages flower buds and germination. Without it, food production is reduced or

irregular in both quantity and quality. This particularly affects nuts and fruit like apples, cherries, strawberries and pears, and cereals like wheat.

There is already evidence that winter chill has declined in Britain and that this has affected our output of certain crops. Maybe this has affected your fruit trees; lack of winter chill is one cause of irregular or poor fruiting.

The garden is often put to bed in late November and disregarded until March but there is pleasure to be had from good structure and plenty of evergreen plants and shrubs. Well-clipped evergreen shrubs and hedges make a good contrast with the bare branches of deciduous trees and shrubs, especially if it snows.

You can still work when the weather permits. Carry out late winter pruning of apples and pears by reducing the past year’s growth to about 4 or 5

buds, removing any dead or damaged wood and branches which either cross or crowd the middle of the tree. Make clean cuts just above a bud or back to a main stem.

You can also do some restorative pruning of established deciduous shrubs, removing one-third of the thickest growth to the base. If you do this every winter for about three or four years you will have an entirely new shrub with healthy vigorous wood. Reduce overall height if required, always cutting back to a main stem and leaving no snags.

Remember to knock heavy snow off conifers with the back of the broom and avoid getting salt from paths onto the grass or other plants.

If you’re feeling restless you can always turn over the compost heap, incorporating some brown material like newspaper or egg cartons. If you keep it well made up during the winter it will heat quicker in the spring.

Whether the winter is Narnia or nuisance, remember we are lucky to have it. By the end of January, the sun will be stronger and the days will be longer. The bulbs are growing and the buds are fattening on the trees; remember “If winter comes, can spring be far behind?”

Peebles Netball is looking for Primary 7 girls in the Tweeddale area to join them in a new and fun netball venture.

The Peebles based club, recently announced as Netball Scotland’s Junior Club of the Year for the second year in succession, is opening its doors to provide four coaching and playing sessions for aspiring netballers in the area who are in their final year at primary. The four Academy days are funded by the National Lottery and will take place between January and April 2015. Each will offer a fun coaching session followed by mini matches.

Linda Nicholson, coach at Peebles Netball explained, “The aim is to bring Primary 7 girls together from the range of Tweeddale schools to enjoy some expert coaching before putting their new skills into practice in mini matches.

We will mix up players from different schools so that they get a chance to make new sporting friendships which will help them when they progress to high school later on next year. Girls from the smaller schools who have limited opportunity to play in full teams at their own school are particularly welcome.

The sessions are free and will be great fun with lots of

support for the players of all different standards.”

The coaching academy will take place at Peebles High School on Sunday evenings from 4pm – 6.30pm on 11th January, 15th February, 15th March and 26th ‘April. It is essential to pre-book in order to secure a place at the Academy as places will be restricted. Bookings are now open for the first day. Places should be pre-booked by emailing Linda Nicholson on [email protected] stating the player’s name, school and parent contact details.

FictionThe Narrow Road to the Deep Northby Richard FlanaganWinner of the Man Booker Prize 2014.Forever after, there were for them only two sorts of men: the men who were on the Line, and the rest of humanity, who were not. In the despair of a Japanese POW camp on the Burma Death Railway, surgeon Dorrigo Evans is haunted by his love affair with his uncle’s young wife two years earlier. Struggling to save the men under his command from starvation, from cholera, from beatings, he receives a letter that will change his life forever. Hailed as a masterpiece, Richard Flanagan’s epic novel tells the unforgettable story of one man’s reckoning with the truth.

Gone Girl by Gillian FlynnThe addictive No. 1 bestseller that everyone is talking about.Who are you? What have we done to each other? These are the questions Nick Dunne finds himself asking on the morning of his fifth wedding anniversary, when his wife Amy suddenly disappears. The police suspect Nick. Amy’s friends reveal that she was afraid of him, that she kept secrets from him. He swears it isn’t true. A police examination of his computer shows strange searches. He says they weren’t made by him. And then there are the persistent calls on his mobile phone. So what really did happen to Nick’s beautiful wife?

We are All Completely Beside Ourselves by Karen Joy FowlerRosemary’s young, just at college, and she’s decided not to tell anyone a thing about her family. So we’re not going to tell you too much either: you’ll have to find out for yourselves, round about page 77, what it is that makes her unhappy family unlike any other. Rosemary is now an only child, but she used to have a sister the same age as her, and an older brother. Both are now gone - vanished from her life. There’s something unique about Rosemary’s sister, Fern. And it was this decision, made by her parents, to give Rosemary a sister like no other, that began all of Rosemary’s trouble. So now she’s telling her story: full of hilarious asides and brilliantly spiky lines, it’s a looping narrative that begins towards the end, and then goes back to the beginning. Twice. It’s funny, clever, intimate, honest, analytical and swirling with ideas that will come back to bite you. We hope you enjoy it, and if, when you’re telling a friend about it, you do decide to spill the beans about Fern - it’s pretty hard to resist - don’t worry. One of the few studies Rosemary doesn’t quote says that spoilers actually enhance reading. Shortlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2014.

Non FictionI am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Talibanby Malala Yousafzai, Christina Lamb*Winner of the 2014 Nobel Peace Prize* In 2009 Malala Yousafzai began writing a blog on BBC Urdu about life in the Swat Valley as the Taliban gained control, at times banning girls from attending school. When her identity was discovered, Malala began to appear in both Pakistani and international media, advocating the freedom to pursue education for all. In October 2012, gunmen boarded Malala’s school bus and shot her in the face, a bullet passing through her head and into her shoulder. Remarkably, Malala survived the shooting. At a very young age, Malala Yousafzai has become a worldwide symbol of courage and hope. Her shooting has sparked a wave of solidarity across Pakistan, not to mention globally, for the right to education, freedom from terror and female emancipation.

If I Stay by Gayle Forman‘Just listen,’ Adam says with a voice that sounds like shrapnel.’ I open my eyes wide now. I sit up as much as I can. And I listen. ‘Stay,’ he says. Everybody has to make choices. Some might break you. For seventeen-year-old Mia, surrounded by a wonderful family, friends and a gorgeous boyfriend decisions might seem tough, but they’re all about a future full of music and love, a future that’s brimming with hope. But life can change in an instant. A cold February morning ...a snowy road ...and suddenly all of Mia’s choices are gone. Except one. As alone as she’ll ever be, Mia must make the most difficult choice of all. Post referendum

Well, I’m both exhausted and disappointed following the close result in the Referendum campaign.45% yes, 55% no and not all the “no’s” for no change shows Scotland on the move to taking more control over its affairs. 85 % turn-out and 1.6 million votes for the full whack. I surveyed many of you throughout this large constituency and over 500 replied .Those replies went straight to Lord Smith as promised. Most wanted very strong powers for the Parliament with the exception of Defence and Foreign affairs. This is nowhere near what the Commission report has offered. My Annual Report will be coming out to you late in December/early January and you can read there for yourself the outcome. What lies ahead now as I am sure you know, are billions of cuts to the money the Scottish Government will have to spend. The UK debt increases ,it is now in trillions and we are told cuts are inevitable whoever is in power after the UK May election. I, as you would expect, take a different view. During the Referendum campaign I warned of the cuts ahead. There was not a squeak from the Tories/Labour/Liberals and they are all desperately trying to play this down. There is however the option of sending a strong SNP group of MPs to ensure this nation’s voice is heard and to turn these policies around.

You see I call Tory and Lib/Dem tears at threats to Haylodge crocodile tears-although the Scottish Government is actually protecting the NHS Budget here. Ask them that if they want more money-where is it coming from? Are there cuts ahead which will make what has happened so far to your local services pale into insignificance? There is no money tree just the funding from Westminster to Scotland cut by £2.5 billion since 2010. In the meantime, I will fight to ensure the future of Haylodge should it come under threat.

Buses and stuff

You know opposition politicians try to accuse the Government of holding Scotland “on pause” during the Referendum debate. This is balderdash. On constituency issues my office deals with some 120 or so e-mails per day and has 700 current cases .Saturday surgeries continue including those in TESCO Peebles and of course the bus service and bus station saga goes on. At the time of writing I am shortly to meet again with Paul Mc Gowan CEO of First Bus and I’m working hard at getting those Peebles buses back in the Edinburgh Bus Station if only at “off peak” times. I shall obviously let you know the outcome.

Justice Committee

Another part of the day job is chairing the Parliament’s

Justice Committee and also the Committee on policing. Recently the reduced alcohol limit was introduced. The test is 50 milligrams of alcohol in 100 millilitres of blood. The entire committee supported this reduction and I think the issue will be folk being wary of what the level of alcohol is in their blood after drinks the night before. The penalty remains losing your licence so take care.

X Party Group on Animal Welfare

I chair this group which meets quarterly with a diverse membership. Co-vice chairs are Alison Johnston (Green) and Cara Hilton (Labour). This meets after Parliamentary business and discusses agreed animal welfare issues. In early January I am leading a debate –what is known as a Members debate -seeking to ban the use of electronic collars on dogs and cats for so-called “training” purposes. After the debate together with the Kennel Club and Dogs Trust I am supporting an event at which those MSPs not supporting my motion will be challenged to try one of those collars on themselves. Not round their necks I hastened to add. Believe you me it’s painful. Indeed I think I’ll put that challenge out to the meeja here too! And if you want to keep up-to-date with the work of my office, please log onto my website( www.christinegrahame.com) or indeed my Facebook pages.

Economic impact figures have been released for two major cycling events held earlier this year in the Scottish Borders, showing cycling events are now a major contributor to the local economy.

TweedLove Bike Festival, which was held in May, and the Tour O’ The Borders which took place in August, had a combined direct economic impact to the region of £1.7 million. Both were based around the Tweed Valley town of Peebles, an area which is fast gaining recognition as one of the UK’s top cycling destinations.

The events received support from EventScotland and Scottish Borders Council, and were organised by local firm Hillside Outside Ltd, who specialise in cycling and outdoor events.

“We’re delighted with this level of success”, says company director Neil Dalgleish. “The events

have been recognised as a success at an international level, and visitors have gone home very impressed with our bike trails and our incredible cycling community. There’s something really special happening here.”

The firm has now taken on additional staff to manage its expanding events roster, but are keen to emphasise the importance of volunteers. “We’re extremely proud of these events”, says Dalgleish. “We don’t have big budgets and so many people here put in so much effort to make it all work. We can stand shoulder to shoulder with some of the world’s top bike events and destinations now, and that’s down to a big community effort.”

The local population’s enthusiasm for all things cycling is also being noticed by both the UK and international media, with the area being held up as

an example of how an active community can have significant social, cultural and other benefits.

Stuart Bell from Scottish Borders Council says “Not only do events such as Tour o’ the Borders attract local, Scottish and UK cycling enthusiasts out for a day’s ride; but they also showcases our region as a top cycling destination for road cycling as well as mountain biking. These events project a strong message that the Scottish Borders is a great place to visit and have fun.. well done to the organisers!”

Dates for next year’s events have now been released, TweedLove Bike Festival will run from 17 to 31 May, 2015, with the Tour O The Borders, a closed road sportive event, to be held on August 9.

Quick fix or life change ?I hope you all had a great Christmas and enjoyed a relaxing time with your friends and family. The trouble is, over the festive period it is all too easy to eat and drink more and get out of regular exercise routines. By now I bet a lot of people are scouring the media looking for a “quick fix” to help them fit back into their clothes that have mysteriously shrunk overnight! And they were probably doing the same thing last year and the year before that. By Easter it will all be forgotten until next January or until they find they cant fit into their summer clothes. Quick fixes may or may not work for you and may cost quite a lot of money and are not always healthy or easy to stick to in the long term. Unless you have a magic wand

the only answer I’m afraid is a long term investment in your health that continues all year round. People can spend a fortune on houses, clothes, cars etc. but forget to look after the most important thing in life..... Their health and well being. It does not need to cost a lot, it need only cost your time and commitment but it needs to be consistent. So instead of thinking short term, think long term, invest in yourself, you are worth it. So this time next year you will be fitter, healthier and raring to go.LesleyLesley MitchellFitness and Pilates in PeeblesPersonal Trainer, Pilates, Zumba, Ante/Post Natal PilatesT: 01792 156458 www.pilatesinpeebles.co.uk

Only two matches in the last month for the 1stXV were unfortunately both away defeats to Stewarts Melville and Kelso, with Kelso reversing the result at the Gytes, on the first day of the league season. These results see the Club’s senior team drop down to seventh in BT National League One but plenty fixtures ahead allow for that trend to be reversed over the next few months. The 2ndXV meanwhile continue their league leading position in the BT Reserve League East 1, having disposed of Boroughmuir, RHC, Lasswade and Jedforest, against a solitary 2 point loss to Haddington.

Moving into the youth sections, the Colts are still working hard to secure that lucrative top four finish and currently sit fifth, with three wins (Langholm, Hawick

PSA and Tynedale) to a single loss to league leaders Jed Thistle. The Under 16’s have also built up a head of steam with a strong month defeating Duns and Jed, before spoiling league winners Hawick Albion’s trophy presentation with a 19-14 win on ‘Super Sunday’ at the 3G Arena in Galashiels. One final match, against bottom placed Berwick, stands in their way to a top four finish, and a place in the last eight on the National Youth Leagues Under 16 Bowl.

On the representative front, the Club have been represented in all levels of the new BT Academies Regional Age-Grade programme, with Richard Harrison playing for Borders & East Lothian Under 20’s, William Napier and William Brown playing for the Under 18’s, and Roddy Guiney and James Walpole turning out for the Under 16’s. A few other Peebles Under 16 players are involved in the training and hope to turn out for the Academy team before the end of the season. Following some excellent performances in the fixtures to date, Roddy Guiney has been provisionally selected for the extended National Under 16 Squad, and we wish him well in his quest for

national honours.

High School fixtures have fallen foul of the weather of late, and now take a break for the Christmas and New Year holidays. Regular fixtures should restart in January. Unfortunately, the schools senior XV came up short against Earlston High School in the Brewin Dolphin Borders & East Lothian Under 18 Regional Plate Final, with Earlston progressing through to the national phase of the competition.

As ever, full details of all matches at all levels, including kick off times, can be found on the Club’s website – www.peeblesrfc.org Should any readers be interested in learning more about the Rugby Club and rugby for all ages in the Peebles area, please do not hesitate to contact me using any of the avenues below.
