ASaTransnet employee, Gert (59), has someunique options available when he retires.Below is a simple example to illustrate theprinciples.

Gert has a pension fund worth R3-million.When he retires he would be able to take 1/3of that (R1-million) as a lump sum (the otherR2-millionmust be invested to provide a pen-sion). If hewere amemberof a regularprivatesector fund, then the first R500 000 of thelump sumwould be tax-free and the remain-ing R500 000 would be taxable. In this in-stance ,hewouldpayR117 000taxonthe lumpsum. However, because Gert is an employeeat Transnet with, say, 37 years of service, hecould get the full R1-million tax-free.

MARCH 1998BeforeMarch 1998 lumpsumsfromgovern-

ment retirement funds were totally tax-free.The portion of the lump sum attributable toGert’s employment before 1998 will still betotally tax-free, and over and above that thefirst R500 000 of the portion attributable tohis employment after that (17 years sincethen) will also be tax-free.

In this example 54% or R540 000 of hislump sum is attributable to his employmentbefore 1998 and will be totally tax-free (notethat all of the figures in this article are round-ed to keep the example simple). The remain-ing 46% or R460 000 is attributable to hisservice after that. Since anything up toR500 000 of this portion is also tax-free itmeans that he will not pay tax on this either. That is why the full R1-million lump sum inthis example is totally tax-free.

TO RESIGN OR TO RETIRE?However, asaTransnetemployeeunderthe

age of 60, Gert also has another option. Hecould resign instead of retiring. If he did thishe could get a tax-free lump sum of just over

R1,6-million.The reason for this is that the pre-1998 tax-

free formulawould be applied to his full fundcredit of R3-million and not just the 1/3 lumpsum. That means that 54% of the R3-millionis attributable to Gert’s employment beforeMarch 1998 and would therefore be tax-free.That gives him just over R1,6-million.

If he followed this route (as anumberofhisTransnet colleagueshave) he couldultimatelyend up with around R1,4-million in a pensiongenerating investment like a living annuityand about R1,6-million in discretionary funds.Thebenefitsof thisstructureare 1)his incomein retirement will be a lot more tax- efficient, and 2) his portfolio will be more liquid.

A NOTEWhenever there are tax breaks like this

available, it makes sense to consider takingadvantage of them. For Transnet employeeswhoare considering leaving before age 60 theexample above illustrates an option worthconsidering. However, remember that leavingearly means cutting off the last few years ofcontribution and growth and this mightmake thedifferencebetweenbeing comforta-ble or not. Therefore, ask a skilled financialplanner to do retirement calculations for youbefore making your final decision.

“Ek sukkel alsedert 2012metdiemunisipaliteit,wantdie tuin-

LEAD globally, transform regionally, serve lo-cally. This is the theme of the biennial SigmaTheta Tau International (STTI) conventionand recognised for implementing these threemissions, is NMMU student, Euan Martins(20).

For this budding nurse, dedication to hisstudies and will to help others, have earnedhim international recognition. Martins is oneof two South African students to be invited tothe STTI convention, that will take place from7-11 November, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I feel extremelyhumbledby this opportuni-ty, because someone as young as myself willbe able to learn fromsomeof thebiggestnamesin the nursing field,” said Martins, excitedly.

“I look forward to the convention, becauseI will be able to bring back the knowledge I ob-tain and make a difference locally.”

For Martins, the knowledge that he willbringhomewill aidhiminhisdutiesof leadingthe new generation of nurses. As the chairper-

son of NMMU’s nursing society, he feels thathis first trip abroad will be beneficial to himand those around him.

“I have alwayswanted to inspire others,” hesaid, as he begins to think about his own per-sonal inspirations. “Forme, studying towardsa qualification in medicine only came aboutwhen I was in my late teens.”

AsaschoolboyatMuirCollege inUitenhage,Martins had dreams of following his passionfor fitness and athletics. However, due to aninjury after a 200m run, Martins had to reas-sess his plans for the future. “I broke a tendoninmyrightkneeandasa result, I had tounder-go an operation.”

It was then, at the age of 17, whilst lying inhishospitalbed, thatMartins startedconsider-ing a career in medicine. “I was so scared thatI might never be able to use my leg again andbecause of my doctor, I was given back thatchance. He gave me something that I wasafraid of losing,” said Martins.

It was then that Martins decided that he toowanted to make a notable difference in thelives of others.

Thus far, Martins believes that he has donejust that – even if it is on a small scale. “Mymost memorable moment has to be going totheMalabarOldAgeHomeand spending timewith the senior citizens,” saidMartins. “Theytold us stories and reminisced about the ‘goodold days’.”

Theexperienceofmakingadifference to thegeneral well being of others was the affirma-tion Martins needed that his chosen path wasthe right one. In fact, Martins had felt so in-spired to make a difference to those he workswith, that he started the NMMU nursingchoir.

“I have always had a love for music. I playthe guitar and the piano and singing has al-ways provided me with an outlet to expressmyself,” he said. Combining his talents of car-ing for ailments withmedicine - and song, hasmade studying all that more exciting for thisyoungman, whodespitehis age, hasbig plans.

“I want to inspire others, because I havebeen blessed beyond recognition and if I canbless someone in any way I can, I will haveachieved my goal.”

PEOPLE don’t grow old because of playing, they get old when they stop playing.

These are the words of Retha van der Mer-we, the manager of the ACVV’s two bran-ches in Algoa Park and Govan Mbeki Ave-nue.

Nationally the month of October is themonth of the elderly of our country. There-fore the ACVV together with the Depart-ment of Social Development has a wholeprogramme lined up for the senior citizensof the ACVV’s retirement villages in themetro.

First on the programme was the ACVV’sgot talent competition which was attendedby 85 elderly people at the Louis Dubb re-tirement village, and the participation alsomade a great turn out.

One of the acts at the competition whichstood out was that of Dina Stamp, an 83-year-old, who has been residing in IrisPark for the past 9 years.

The newspaper paid Stamps a visit at theACVV Algoa Park retirement village, where she performed Kurt Darren’s popu-lar song “Loslappie”. She enjoyed everymoment as she sang and freely movedacross the centre’s wooden floor.

Where does she still get the energy andwillpower to still keep fit at 83, is the ques-tion many ask?

“I am involved with a lot of activities andI don’t believe in sitting at home waitingto age; I believe that one needs to stay ac-tive in one’s environment,” said Stamps.

She is a non-smoker and invests a lot ina healthy lifestyle, spiritual development,a balanced diet and physical exercise.

She said, “Every Tuesday and Thursday

the ACVV centre offers biokinetic classesfor us, and here we can stretch and let loosea bit.”

Another activity on the list is the Goldengames which will be held in Kimberley laterthis year. According to Van der Merwe, themetro’s team has been winning for the lasttwo years in a row.

The ACVV is a place where no residentfeels old, where people overflow with theirown joy, while they find valuable means andways to make their 24 hours a day pass by.

WHEN Linkside High School matricpupil, Heine Vorster, thinks back athis school years, he will have muchmore to think about than any otherlearner. That’s because in his 12years of school, Heine has nevermissed a day.

At his final prize giving, whichtook place last Wednesday, Heinethought he was having a case of déjá-vu when his primary school teacherwalked on stage. The teacher in question was Buks

Groenewald from Heine’s previousschool, Kabega Park Primary. In

grade 7, he received a prize for 100%attendance and Groenewald was theone to hand it over.“It was quite a surprise seeing him

there,” said Heine. Not only didGroenewaldhandoverHeine’s prize, but he also made good on a five-year-old promise: If Heine were to get100% attendance at high school hewould get R500.“I never thought hewould actually

do it, but it was really special to havehim there,” Heine said.To Groenewald, no monetary val-

ue can be added to Heine’s 12-yearachievement. “When I made thatpromise, I knew that he wouldachieve it, because he has strong vig-

our,” said Groenewald.According to Heine, the “vigour”

he displayed, wasn’t constant, be-cause there were days when the urgeto go school wasn’t as strong.“Going to school everyday can be-

come monotonous and so I havethought of staying at home, but mymother always said: ‘If you’re toosick to go to school, you’re too sickto play Xbox’.”So it is with thanks to his mother’s

emphatic rules that Heine was ableto achieve 100% attendance. His mother’s rearing has also seen

his brothers, Nicki and Ruen, achieve 100%attendance at LinksideHigh.

SUNRIDGE Village Shopping Centre re-cently treated residents of Cassia Gardensto lunch at The Buzz Factory to celebratethe retirement village’s 30th anniversary.

According to Suzanne Fincham of CentreManagement, the Cassians, as the resi-dents call themselves, have a special rela-tionship with the shop owners at Sunridge

Village and it was therefore quite apt thatthey should be treated by the Centre on thisspecial occasion.

Cassia Gardens was developed by Metho-dist Homes for the Aged in Cassia Drive,Sunridge Park.

The first 31 two-bedroom cottages of thevillage, each costing R46 000, and 13 one-bedroom cottages, costing R34 000, weretaken occupation of on March 31, 1985. TheVillage was officially opened on Saturday,

August 3, 1985.According to one of the first residents,

there were no roads, no outside lighting, nophones, no lawns and lots of crickets, scor-pions and bullfrogs at the time.

In September 1997 additional land, adja-cent to Cassia Gardens, was bought andphase two started in January 1998 with theconstruction of 17 new cottages, at a costof R184 000 for a 97-square metre cottageand R210 000 for a 106 square metre cottage.

In 2004 Phase 3, comprising two more cot-tages, was built.

In the 19 years since phase 1 the cost ofsimilar-sized units escalated from R46 000to R210 000 in phase two, to R401 500 inPhase 3.

In recent years another six cottage com-plexes have been developed or acquired, aswell as two frail care facilities, two bedsit-ter apartment blocks and a head officebuilding.

McWilliamsAcademy of Dance excels atchampionshipsThe McWilliams Academy of Dance (MAD) attended the South African Championships held inKyalami this month and many of the academy’s dancers won their sections. M.A.D also hadeight dancers who qualified for the 2016 World Championships to be held in Glasgow,Scotland. These 8 qualifiers are, from left, Lisa Ward (15), Mia Jansen van Rensburg (13),Courtney Pearce (23), Jenna Hayes (14), teacher Jenny McWilliams, Carma Stephenson (14),Thameena Hamza (16) and consultant Aaron Crosbie. This is considered a fantastic achieve-ment, considering that MAD is the only Irish Dancing school in the Bay, and also one of thesmallest studios in South Africa, yet they had the most number of qualifiers. The Academy willbe hosting a dance evening to raise funds either in November or December and are lookingfor donations for prizes and also something special to auction. CHANDRÉ MASOLING

AFTER 28 years of commitment, hard workand determination, the first team of CelticFootball club, situated among the Northern ar-eas of the metro, got promotion and will nowplay for a higher league.

The club which was established in 1987 hasbeen playing in the Northern Area Football As-sociation for decades and consists only of play-ers residing in the northern areas if the Bay.

“On Saturday, October 10, our first teamplayed against Windvogel United and beatthem to a score of 3-0,” said Warren Blaauw, spokesperson and reserve team player of theclub.

This win was a huge stepping stone for theteam as it pushed them into a higher and moreadvanced soccer league after 28 years of play-

ing for the NAFA - The Premier League. This league is the highest league in the NA-

FA, and can mean more than just promotionfor the winners.

“In this league our players can get more ex-posure in the sense that more coaches fromhigher soccer associations can scout them, andeven take them to play for a higher league,”said Blaauw.

The first team, however, is not the only Celt-ic Football club team making history. The re-serve team pushed through to the finals of theShield league, which also forms part of the NA-FA league, and will face their opponents on No-vember 1.

The team welcomes any donations, as theyurgently need new kits to play in. They alsohave two junior teams which also require fi-nancial support. Contact Warren Blaauw at076 979 3875 for more info.

WHEN first introduced in the localmarket, Chev sold its Cruze as a car of-fering high specs and big car comfortfeatures at a much more affordableprice than its European competitors. And it looked the part too. This year they have updated the

hatchbackandsedanrangewiththead-dition of a new six-speed automaticgearbox option for the 1.4 turbopetrolsedan version. And with this 2015 up-grade, the LS versions have gained aMylinkinfotainmentsystemwithacol-our touch-screen.This week’s test model was the 1.4 T

hatch model with 6-speed manualtransmission.

ExteriorThe2015updateof theCruzeincludes

some cosmetic surgery on the exteriortoo, with a smoother rear for the sedanversionand sharper frontwithnewdu-al port grille and bumper. The rear fascia enhancement of the

sedan model includes a new deck lidand tail lamp design.Adding to the appearance as well as

safety are projection fog lamps andLEDdaytimerunninglights.Thehatchsportsasweepingcouperooflinewhichthe people at GM say has been aerody-namically designed for optimum fuelefficiency.

InteriorOne thing that certainly stands out

about the Cruze’s interior is the gener-ous cabin space, not to mention bootspace. This boot is huge and I like theheight of the loadbed which makes foreasy packing and unpacking of the car.

In addition, the 60:40 foldable seatscan be folded forward for even morespace. Leather seats and a sunroof areavailable as an option.I found the interior design to be very

tastefulandpractical featuringadjusta-ble cupholders and a dashboard withcurvy lines and metallic trim. The lay-out of thedashboard isunclutteredandeasy on the eye. Most impressive and noticeable is

the colour touchscreen in themiddle ofthe dashboard as part of Chevrolet’sMyLink infotainment system. It’s com-patible with most smartphones and al-lows one to stream music via Blue-tooth. The USB port enables one to ac-cess one’s playlists and music. Thesteering-wheel also houses controls forthe audio system.

RideThe vehicle test driven was the 1.4T

LS Hatch version with 6-speed manualtranmission. The turbocharged 1.4ECOTEC petrol engine generates200Nm of torque and power of 103 kWbetween 4 900 and 6 000rpm. Combinedfuel consumption is stated as6.8l/100km for the sedan version, withcorresponding CO² emissions of 157 g/km.The 1.4 turbo models mated to the

manual transmission are fitted withstop/start technology for additional fu-eleconomyandloweremissions.. Its fu-el efficiency is stated as 5.8L/100km ina combined cycle.I found the Cruze to be quick off the

mark, eager to go and offering an ener-getic, yet smooth and comfortable ridedespitethisbig-sizedcarbeingpowered

by a relatively small engine.I also liked the feel and shape of the

big, bulky gearknob. It handles themom’s taxi routewith all its traffic cir-cles, potholes, speedbumps and stop-start moving with panache, while notafraid to let its hair down on the openroad.Cruze control is also a standard fea-

ture.

SafetyThe Cruze offers a comprehensive

package of safety features as standard. These include front passenger, seatside and curtain airbags, aswell asAn-ti-Lock Braking System (ABS), whichprevents wheels from locking duringsudden or forceful braking, the Elec-tronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD)system, which calculates and appliestherightamountofbrakingpressure toeach wheel to maximize stopping pow-er and maintain control when brakingand the TractionControl System (TCS)which works to regain control whentraction on the road surface is lost. The Electronic Stability Program

(ESP) prevents it from skidding out ofcontrol by applying brake pressure tothe wheels that need it and by limitingengine power.

NOW that was more like it – South Africansports achievements that resonated loud andclear at compass points far from home in theFar North and the Far South-East.That last weekend was the true measure of

SA rugby and cricket in a weekend of tri-umph for the Springboks at Twickenham,London and the Proteas in Rajkot, India.Eachhad their heroes, of course.None biggerthough than new Springbok captain, Fouriedu Preez, his efforts nicely captured in a five-column picture in one of the national week-end papers as he roared with delight at hav-ing scored the match-winning try just sixminutes from full time to take the Boks to theRugby World Cup semi-finals.The try made all the difference. In a see-sawing match in which the Boks

were 12-13 behindat thebreak, itwaswonder-fully fitting that it should be Du Preez whoslipped around the blindside of a tense pas-sage to dot down.Handré Pollard, who otherwise was melo-

diously on song with five penalties and adrop-goal, missed the conversion of this his

team’s only try.But it didn’tmatter. Thehardwork had been done.Ironically, Wales’ Dan Biggar succeeded

with three penalties, a conversion (of scrum-half Gareth Davies’ try) and a drop-goal forWales – and made no secret of his disgust atbeing replacedwith some tenminutes of playremaining. Would it have made a differencehad he not been replaced? Who knows? It wasn’t a great game with the Boks mak-

ing unnecessary errors at critical moments.Nonetheless it was overall a sterling team ef-fort, with some great work by the loose trio,Schalk Burger in particular. Rather it wasthe sort of game in which both sides gave allthey had, never giving up for a moment.Interestingly the Boksmade somewhere in

the region of 150 tackles, comparedwith theiropponents’ 45 or 50. This tells a story of itsown: for much of the gameWales enjoyed themajority of possession. One of the reasons forthis was the Springboks’ inability to makethe best use of possession. Time and againtheywould lose the ball in contact situations.Much to coach Heyneke Meyer’s consterna-

tion these breakdowns would furnish newammunition for the Welsh to set up nerve-wracking opportunities for attacks of theirown. However, that these surges towards the

Boks tryline were contained said much forthe steadfast refusal of the South African de-fence to give way. If this game showed onething it was just how valuable the young sec-ond row of Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jagerare going to be to South African rugby in theyears ahead. Not only are they lineout spe-cialists of high order but also great foragersin the loose and collisions aimed retaining orstealing possession against the run of play. And in Rajkot, largely through the efforts

of young Quinton de Kock, with an almostfaultless century, theProteas rangup a bravevictory in the third ODI against India. The win, by 18 runs (Proteas 270/7, India

252/6) gave the South Africans a 2-1 lead inthe currentODI series.Man of theMatchwasMorne Morkel with a haul of 4/31, while bestof the India teamwere captain Dhoni with 61and Kohli 77.
