MAJoR: communications; concentration: JournalismMINoR: Global studiesINTERNSHIP: Web editorial internseventeen.com, new York, new York ever since i was in high school, and a loyal reader of seventeen, it had been my dream to intern with the company. in addition to being the top-selling teen magazine in the country, I find their body-positive initiative and focus on real girl stories to be incredibly influential to their demographic. I applied to many different areas of the company and accepted an internship with the web department, which is seventeen.com. through the Marist in Manhattan program, i was able to not only live in nYc, but also intern full-time with the web department. Over the semester, my assignments grew to include building articles such as flipbooks, blogs, in-books, and syndications; cropping pictures, researching content, formatting metadata for seO, attending meetings, and pitching my own ideas. One of the most beneficial parts of my internship was that each project i worked on for my editors helped them out and appeared on the website in some way. I never made coffee runs or photocopies. if i researched clothes or celebrities, the pictures or information i found were included in the article my editor was writing. the most rewarding part of the internship was being able to have a byline and see my name appear on multiple articles for a major online publication. Over the course of three months, i was able to build a relationship with each of the six members of the web team. i became closest with my editor, and she had a great balance of teaching me, but also letting me learn on my own. She offered me insight into the professional world of journalism. And, because i am in the demographic of readers that the website reaches, she always encouraged my questions and ideas. it was refreshing to know that despite being an intern, my opinions were valued as if i were a full-time employee. If offered a full-time position with Seventeen.com, I would definitely accept it. Web is the future of journalism, so I would jump at the opportunity to further develop my skills.

My advice to Marist students looking for internships is to look for a company whose content matches your interests, as you will likely be more interested in the work you produce. in addition, don’t be afraid to say yes to new assignments and opportunities - take advantage of the chance to learn real world skills, as that initiative and knowledge will pay off tremendously.

MAJoR: Public relations; MINoRS: Fashion Merchandising INTERNSHIPS: Buying intern - donna Karan, international in new York, nY; Public relations intern - British Hospitality Association, london, england

i have been fortunate to intern at both donna Karan in new York city and the British Hospitality Association (BHA) in london. At donna Karan i was able to indulge my love of fashion and at BHA, my interest in traveling and the diversity of the hospitality industry.

At donna Karan, i compiled assortment sheets for upcoming collections, checked merchandise in and out, and organized production knowledge booklets for store managers. My supervisor was incredibly helpful and ensured that i got the most out of the experience. My tasks at BHA included creating Google Alerts about hospitality topics in the UK, writing press releases, and reading various British newspapers on hospitality to make clippings when the BHA was mentioned. My supervisor was the head of communications and has a vast knowledge of Pr, traveling, and restaurant culture. She was very hands on and taught me how to write specifically for a British audience.

My favorite part about of the donna Karan internship was being able to see a new season’s merchandise months before anyone else. My favorite day was when the cara delevingne collaboration merchandise was brought to the office and we all tried on the clothes! What i enjoyed most about BHA was the opportunity to analyze full news stories about the hospitality industry in the United Kingdom and that my press releases were actually sent out to real reporters and clients.

i also had the chance to expand my networking skills through donna Karan at an lvMH internship party where i met interns at other LVMH brands such as Louis Vuitton and Dior. The office where the British Hospitality Association was located was small and the BHA team is very close. Having those close relations made for excellent networking opportunities. in fact, at the end of my internship, my supervisor encouraged me to apply for a job with BHA and return to work with them after i graduate from Marist. networking doesn’t get much better than that!

speaking from the perspective of having had more than one internship, my advice to Marist students is to get out there and intern! Interning is a great opportunity for students to figure out if their tentative career goals are actually what they want to pursue in the future.

andrea Suarez navarro Junior MAJoR: communication / communication studies and Journalism MINoR: Business INTERNSHIP: Operations internBusiness council of Westchester, rye Brook, nY

This internship offered me the opportunity to gain a great deal of knowledge about some of the largest businesses in new York, primarily Westchester, which is one of the wealthiest counties in the state. i wanted to work in an environment that would give me exposure to marketing and branding individual businesses.

the Business council of Westchester (BcW) helps businesses to increase their visibility, grow their prospect lists and reach targeted audiences of potential customers. Members can take advantage of unique opportunities to market their businesses. Most of my responsibilities allowed me to use my communication skills. the BcW sponsors many business networking events and i assisted the executive vice President and director of Operations with tasks related to making them successful. this included working with member profiles in the database and editing them as appropriate, assisting with event preparation and execution, and making outreach phone calls to promote the events. As an intern, i also helped to project the BcW brand by greeting visitors and handling walk-in traffic in a positive, informative and helpful manner. this included directing inquiries to the proper individuals in the organization.

The staff at the BCW were welcoming and made me feel like an important asset to the team. My supervisor was gentle and knowledgeable. she knew exactly how to run things and was easy to get along with. she was extremely helpful and understanding when i had questions and always encouraged me to question everything so that i would acquire a better understanding of how businesses worked. i enjoyed how this internship was a “two way street” where i participated in work tasks they needed done but also was allowed to work on projects i wanted to learn about.

the networking potential was huge. i was able to meet, greet, and socialize with all kinds of businesses in Westchester, from the smallest bakery in the village to the nation’s leading soda company. i gained a greater knowledge of how businesses interacted and applied my communication and business background to a firsthand experience in marketing. If a full-time position was offered to me by BCW, I would definitely enjoy working alongside the people I met and learned from during the summer.

MAJoR: Fashion Merchandising / BusinessINTERNSHIP: Merchandising internBcBGMAXAZriAGrOUP, vernon, cA

After a retail management internship for a small, private business, i chose my second internship at BcBGMAXAZriAGrOUP in los Angeles because they are unique in the fashion industry. their corporate headquarters performs all operations including design, merchandising, production, buying, planning, and finance for all three of their brands.

since BcBG creates samples on site, i observed the start of the creative process all the way through merchandise shipping decisions. the job of a merchandiser is to take feedback from design and buying/planning teams and narrow down a collection of hundreds of pieces to a line that is sellable and marketable to other retailers. Working under the director of merchandising, i organized sample closets, prepared monthly line deliveries for executive review meetings, and communicated with the production department to make sure all merchandise was meeting standards set by design and buying teams. i reviewed best and worst sellers and replenished stock weekly for partner shops such as Macy’s, Bloomingdale’s, and lord & taylor. i closed merchandise accounts with insufficient funds and allocated final pieces from warehouses to their proper locations.

However, the best part about my job was walking the halls of the BcBG building. i could walk into the design center (with a private fabric library), sewing room, and graphic print center. i could see production and merchandising (where I worked) and the creative office. Max, Lubov, and Joyce Azria worked right beside employees and i had the pleasure of meeting them. Upstairs was buying, planning, and allocating. On the way to lunch i observed buys and deals being struck. i had conversations with the vice presidents of buying or retail operations, who were always eager to hear what the young demographic on the east coast thought about their stores.

networking opportunities were arranged for interns including “Meet the executive” seminars and resume critiques. A personal branding program taught interns how to market themselves while seeking employment. the use of linkedin was encouraged throughout the company, and even though i worked at the headquarters in california, many supervisors where happy to put me in touch with the New York Office.

My advice to Marist students is that experience is everything! Choose an internship based on tasks and job description rather than company name.

Game Rental ProgramBoard games are available and can be signed out for free with your Marist id.

Event InformationVarious services and programs provided by The Office of Student Activities and a calendar listing all daily campus activities (which our office has scheduled or been informed of) may be found on our web page at www.marist.edu/campuslife/event. information about campus events can also be found on campus bulletin boards, and the campus media (WMAr internet radio, Mctv television, and the circle, Marist student newspaper).

INTRAMURALS • CLUB SPoRTS • RECREATIONAL PROGRAMSMarist college is very proud of its extracurricular activities, which range from club sports to intramural and recreational activities.

Club sports are seasonal and compete against other regional college programs. Intramurals offer any student, whether expert or novice, the chance to play on a team without the time demands of a club sport. intramurals are designed to be co-ed, female, and/or male teams, and can change yearly depending on student interest. Recreational activities offer non-competitive programs ranging from golf and pilates, to roller skating and indoor rock climbing. students interested in participating in either club sports, intramurals, or recreational programs should contact the Intramural Office, x2482, for information on how to get involved.

Spring 2016 Emerging Leaders Series…One More Reason to Keep Your Eye on Your Marist E-MailThe Emerging Leaders Program (ELP) is an exciting, non-credit certificate program providing students with varied and unique opportunities to define, discover, and develop their personal leadership style. Join the hundreds of students who learn to lead at Marist from an interdisciplinary team of national and local experts.

What’s in it for you? A meaningful and practical experience…hot topics… enhanced community connection…resume building…developing key contacts… a running record of your participation in the program and a certificate of completion for students who attend at least five workshops…and much more.

What does it cost? Nothing but your time and a speedy response. ELP offerings are announced via a campus-wide e-mail. Registration for each workshop is limited to the first 50 respondents, but with a few clicks of the mouse, you can join a large and dynamic group of future leaders. don’t miss out on this special opportunity.

Questions about the pro-gram can be sent to [email protected]. look for us on the Marist web-site under First Year Programs.

RED Fox ENRICHMENT PRoGRAMS (RFE)Every semester The Office of Student Activities offers a series of programs designed to enrich the lives of Marist students physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially. each program lasts ten weeks and is held once a week for one hour.

Sign-ups for Mind & Body will take place on Tuesday, February 2, 2016, Noon, at the Student Activities Office, SC3116 Mind & Body with LoriAnn Paul – Mon., 6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m. How would you like to embark upon a journey through inner space? Perhaps you are seeking new and exciting ways to nurture all aspects of your being – mind and body? I am a Certified Yoga Teacher, Meditation teacher and reiki Master-teacher. My quest for personal transformation through the ancient healing arts began more than 30 years ago. i have learned many intriguing and powerful techniques for personal transformation along the way, which I wish to share with you!

this 10-class series will incorporate yoga stretching and breathing techniques (designed to stretch, tone, and strengthen particular parts of the body and to calm the nervous system), and meditations drawn from different traditions around the globe (which help to improve relaxation/stress management skills and improve sleeping patterns among other things).

You should bring a notebook and mat, and wear loose, comfortable clothing. Please try to arrive a few minutes early so that you have time to settle in before class begins. leave your worldly cares and troubles outside the door. Picture yourself entering an environment of peace and relaxation. lie down quietly on your mat, relax, and allow yourself to enter into the experience of being “here and now.” there is a lot of fun and interesting material to cover, and regular attendance is highly recommended.
