From the HeadmasterDear Members of the Marist College Ashgrove family,

In a letter to youth, for World Youth Day 1995 in the Philippine’s, Pope John Paul II talks about now being a tough age to live in.

Most people as they grow older tend to quote to younger generations, “Back in my day ….”. So what was His Holiness referring to? Basically it’s about the difficulties for young people today that were only ever experienced at a far lower level by previous generations. Specifically His Holiness mentioned:

• The weakness of much of family life• The lack of communication between parents and children• The isolating and alienating influence of a large part of the media

He went on to write that the above mentioned difficulties can produce confusion in young people about the truths and values which give a genuine meaning to life.

Not a lot of cause for optimism here. But the Pope reveals that the answer is Jesus. He states that Jesus reveals the truth about our life and destiny. Jesus puts it simply …. Love of God and love of neighbour. He challenges us all to realise we are created in the image of God and therefore, possess an inalienable dignity.

Recently I read an article in The Courier Mail about a young ten year old boy Kyle Haslam. Kyle lost his legs to pneumococcal septicemia when he was a toddler. Twice his parents were told he would die but Kyle bravely defied the odds and can now run thanks to the latest carbon fibre blades he wears in a program run by the Royal Children’s Hospital. Kyle’s parents love and care for him. Kyle accepts his disability and the new blades have given him a real determination to be active and positive. He attends Little Athletics twice a week and is a shining example for us all as to how we should embrace life and be thankful for what we have.

This month of October has been dedicated by the Church to the Most Holy Rosary. It was instituted to honour the Blessed Virgin Mary in gratitude for the protection she provides to all of us. In our Marist world Mary, Our Good Mother, inspires us with faith, hope and love –the way she lived her life. Our approach as Marist educators is, “to nurture, to teach, to gather, to reconcile and to stand with young people so as to give each and all of them reason and means to believe, to hope and to love” Marist Schools Australia. So, in spite of the challenges, we have many reasons for optimism and we pray the prayer that Marcellin prayed to Our Good Mother, the Memorare:

Remember, most loving Virgin Mary, never was it heardthat anyone who turned to you for help was left unaided.Inspired by this confidence, though burdened by my sins,I run to you for protection for you are my mother.

Yours in Jesus, Mary and St MarcellinPeter McLoughlin

Headmaster’s NotesPRAyeRsPlease pray for the repose of the soul of:

• Peter McIntosh’s father who passed away on Saturday 20 October.• Matt McCahon’s mother, Jill Gwendolyn McCahon, who after a long battle with cancer, passed away

recently. Jill is also the Grandmother of Connor Brice (9D) and Declan Brice (8D). Matt was College swim coach from 1998-2008.

• Brad Lewis (O.B. 1982) has unfortunately passed away. Brad was a diabetic and by the looks of it had difficulty with breathing on Monday, was unable to make it to hospital and subsequently passed away.

Eternal rest grant to them O Lord and may perpetual light shine upon them. May they rest in peace. Amen.

ThAnk youThey say charity begins at home. Lisa and I, and our four boys Mark, Tom, Brendan and Liam have experienced the upside of that adage in the last two months.

Recently the youngest of our four boys, Liam, was diagnosed with a Wilm’s Tumour. For a period of time, like all parents in this situation, we were hardly able to function. Everyday activities like cooking meals and cleaning bedrooms and kitchens became something we did in another life.

Lisa and I found ourselves basically paralysed as we sorted our way through diagnostic tests, treatments, false trails and long hours in waiting rooms as specialists told us what was wrong with our son, and how they were going to treat him.

Through this period of great distress, Liam, Lisa, Mark, Tom, Brendan and I have found ourselves the recipients of a scarcely believable deluge of cleaning, meals, moral and financial support and prayers from staff, students and parents of Marist College Ashgrove.

Lisa and I have been blown away by the goodwill shown by everyone at Marist. We thank you not only from the bottom of our hearts, but the middle and top as well. Marcellin Champagnat would be enormously proud of the generosity of spirit shown by the Ashgrove community.

Thank you to all those who have spared time, money, prayers or even a thought for us over the last two months. God Bless you all.

James, Lisa, Mark, Tom, Brendan and Liam Kennedy. The Gap.

CongRATulATionsCongratulations to Christian Nebe (10S)who was awarded a Silver in a 2012 National School Packing Design Challenge.

Listening to each otherParent teamwork skills – making parenting easier

By Parenting Research Centre • Listening is essential when discussing issues or working together to resolve conflict. • It's important to remind yourself to pay attention and understand what others say. • Knowing what your partner thinks, and why, can make a real difference to how well you both cope with the

changes that parenting brings to your relationship.

Listening: why it's importantListening can lead to a better understanding between the two of you and stronger long-term relationships. It makes it easier for parents to solve problems together, and to be consistent in how you behave towards your child. All of this makes raising children easier, and benefits the whole family. Listening is also important in helping children develop the skills they need for life. Children learn from our every interaction, including the way we communicate. Good listening starts with simple steps like:

• looking for ways to really pay attention when your partner speaks • encouraging your partner to talk • showing that you understand your partner's perspective – even when you don’t agree with it – and waiting

until your partner finishes speaking before giving your own opinion.

Getting help• Find out how you and your partner can get extra support when you need it. If you are in a relationship that

involves violence, seek professional help and do whatever is necessary to ensure the safety of you and your children.

Sayings of Barbara Holborow

‘Don’t just talk to your child, don’t just listen; you must hear what your child is saying.’

‘Every family watches too much TV’.

‘What absurdity to think of an infant bonding with a day care worker instead of its mother. Be at home when children arrive after school.’

‘Don’t make the mistake of only finding moments of quality time for your child… give your child lots of time. There is no substitute for the attention of mum and dad.’

Ideas and tips Things to do

Stop whatever you are doing so you can look at your partner and pay full attention to his words and body language.

Save questions or comments for after your partner has finished.

Focus on understanding your partner’s point of view and feelings about the situation.

Ask questions that encourage your partner to talk instead of giving a yes or no answer. Avoid too many questions – this can sound like an interrogation.

Confirm whether you’ve understood what your partner means.

Show that you are interested in finding out more by asking for clarification.

Try not to assume that your partner is being hurtful, or is the one with the problem.

If you’re too distracted to listen, say so, and set another time to talk.

Wait until your partner pauses, even if there’s something you don’t understand. Focus on not distracting your partner.

Avoid jumping in with ‘yes, but’ as a way of explaining your perspective – let the talker finish the point.

Try getting your partner to describe his experiences or views by asking open-ended questions; for example, ‘Tell me about … ‘ Use a combination of positive feedback and clarification to try to understand what your partner is saying.

Restate your partner’s comments in your own words. This helps to confirm whether you understand the issue and your partner’s feelings.

Try clarifying your partner’s feelings about an issue; for example, ‘I gather you feel frustrated with the way this has been going’. Be genuine – your partner will know when you are really interested.

If your partner says or does something hurtful, look for positive or neutral intentions behind it.

A TRIBUTE TO BARBARA HOLBOROWTireless campaigner for children’s rights and former time children’s court magistrate Barbara Holborow passed away in Sydney earlier this year on May 23.

At her funeral, Father Chris Riley, founder of Youth Off The Streets, said he was on his way to see her when he heard the news. "I wanted to tell her two things: that her memory would never ever be forgotten and that I loved her," he said."She grabbed my arm one day and told me she loved me, but I was never able to express myself like that and said thank you back.

NSW Attorney General Greg Smith said, "She was passionate and caring and instrumental in helping change the justice system to give young people a fair go ... she was a remarkable force for good."

"I loved her for her forthrightness and passion; she had so much wisdom and expertise, which she was so generous in sharing," the foundation's CEO Jane Rowe told AAP. Ms Holborow's friend Carol Harkins said she had "the heart and clarity to see what is wrong with the world and articulate that, and the courage and determination to make the vision a reality. She had all these things wrapped in one."

"When Barb spoke you could hear a pin drop - they hung on to every word that lady said."

Ms Holborow came to the field late - she was almost 40 when she graduated as a lawyer, having studied as a single mother while working.

She fostered numerous children including Jacob, an Aboriginal boy she met at a refuge and later adopted. She was awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for service to the community and was named this year's NSW Senior Australian of the Year.

She is survived by her daughter Louise, her adopted son Jacob, two grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Getting a better funding deal for Catholic schools

The makeup of Catholic school families is quite similar to those in government schools.

Catholic schools are an important part of the community in some of Australia’s most disadvantaged areas. Like government schools, Catholic schools also cater for families with middle and high incomes.

Catholic school students, on average, receive 20 per cent less government funding than government school students. There is also a significant gap in funding for students with special needs.

To make up the difference, parents at Catholic schools pay fees. Even then, Catholic schools still operate at around 90 per cent of the cost of education in government schools.

As it stands, paying fees is not easy for many Catholic families now.

If Catholic parents are forced to pay more in fees, it will put a lot of pressure on many families. They will have no option but to move their children from Catholic schools to government schools. Government schools will struggle to cope with more students.

For more information about Catholic school funding visit fundinginfo.catholic.edu.au

View a video on Catholic school funding - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xWyO-iaobfA

Catholic students achieve more with less funding

On average, it costs the government 20 per cent more to teach students in government schools, compared to Catholic schools.

Even with the fees that parents pay in Catholic schools, it is still cheaper to teach students in a Catholic school.

Even in the toughest communities, and with less money, Catholic schools are acknowledged for sowing the seeds of high expectations and discipline in students, while developing well-rounded learners who get better results.

The Australian Government’s NAPLAN results show that, on average, Catholic schools continue to show improvement in their most needy students. These students are more likely to study at university after they finish school.

According to the My School website, the success of Catholic schools comes at a saving to the Australian taxpayer of around $2.2 billion each year.

Catholic school funding must keep pace with rising government school costs. Catholic schools cannot afford to have their funding frozen, as any funding freeze would really be a cut. This is unfair to Catholic school parents because their schools are already saving the government money.

PARISH RETREAT – THE NExT LEVEL“The Catholic Guy”, Bruce Downes and his wife Rosemary deliver a new retreat at St Michael’s Parish, Dorrington, on 14–20 November. Following the great success of the last event at St Michael’s in March this year comes a rarely-offered chance to continue a journey where you can “Expect to move to the Next Level”.

Just as in our everyday life there are new and deeper levels of understanding and experiences to be had, the same is true of our encounter with God.

The Next Level Parish Mission Event is an opportunity for a deeper personal relationship with God. For some people it may even be the first time that they experience God for themselves.

Faith is meant to intersect our everyday life whether it be at work, in our homes, through what we achieve, the challenges we all face and even the aspirations that we have for the future.

Faith is powerful when engaged in all spheres in life.

News from ChaplainNEWS FROM THE COLLEGE CHAPLAINOn October 11th of this year, Pope Benedict proclaimed began a Year of Faith for the worldwide Church. It is hoped, that in the midst of the troubles in the world, that we will have an opportunity to express the hope that is within each person who professes the name of Jesus. The challenge for all of us is to translate that profession of faith into action, that is, showing our faith by our good works.

However there is a presumption in this statement. There are many who have a loose attachment to Jesus. He is a name they know. Indeed many died and rose with Christ in baptism. For many, the name of Jesus has become a dusty memory. Much good work is done in the name of Jesus: charitable acts abound. Many of these are done in the name of Jesus but without Jesus as their source and inspiration.

Our relationship with Jesus should be the source of all that we do, and when that relationship is strong, we really do proclaim his name through actions. In a real way, he becomes written on our faces. Our relationship with Jesus cannot be built up by mere actions. True, the actions can sometimes lead us to him. A relationship built up with Jesus can only be done through prayer. It is through prayer that our faith is deepened.

Recently I was speaking to a young man and he was asking me what to do once he decides to pray. He decided that he would make time for prayer but really had no idea what prayer was except for the few prayers he had learnt at school. He had no idea that Mass was prayer. When I told him that he should start by imagining that he is catching up with the best friend he has in the world he was totally shocked. He had never seen Jesus as a friend.

When prayer is mentioned people often think of knees, of recitations, of long periods, of pleasing, of penance. We all need that reminder that Jesus wants friendship with us. After all, it is for this reason that we were created. Spoken prayers are wonderful ways of leading us into that relationship, just as we go through the ‘meet and greet’ rituals with our friends. If we approach prayer as the development of a relationship we learn to listen and speak, but above all, we learn the language of Love, of, in the words of Henry Newman, ‘heart speaking to heart.’

With every good wish.In Jesus and Mary,Fr Pius Jones, S.M.

Ben Perkins a Year 11 student was received into the church at the College Boarders Mass on Sunday 14th October 2012. We welcome Ben into our catholic family.

OCTOBER 5 - OLD BOYS REUNIONIt’s that genuine look accompanied by a smile, the exchange of hand shake and “Good to see you Mate”, is what you see over and over at Old Boys reunions. There was no exception for this year with the year groups of 1977, 1982 and 1992.

Head of School Peter McLoughlin mixed with the boys of 1992 to reflect on memories and times they shared while as a teacher for this year. Interesting the changes since then as lap tops for students or even the word lap top did not exist.

The lads of 1972 and 1982 chatted, rambled and joked about the times they had at the College as time passed away ever so quickly, the friendships and comradery still very present.

Gents of 1974 Michael Scanlon, Peter McGuire and Peter Casey also put in an attendance to show up some of the younger generations and still in pretty good shape by the look of things.

On the night we funds were raised by the means of a raffle for a signed cricket bat by Matthew Hayden and John Eales, thanks to those who were so kind in supporting. The winning ticket belonged to Michael Scanlon who was quite eager to christen the bat with his sons, all depending on who wins the toss. Funds raised from the raffle will be donated to the College to support bursaries for Old Boys in need of assistance.

With reunions held each year for Old Boys it is noticeable that some things do not change, all reflect on the great times and experiences had at the College and their great admiration held for the College.

PACKAGE DESIGN WINS SILVER FOR CHRISTIAN NEBEStudents in K51 (Year 10 Graphics) participated in the Packaging Council of Australia (PCA) Schools Packaging Challenge as a national competition. Entries were received from secondary students and schools in every State.

The task set for students was to design packaging for an imaginary Australian product.

Students were required to address simple technical considerations, environmental aspects, creative design issues and modern lifestyle choices of consumers. Originality, creativity and innovation helped determine the winners.

Each design was accompanied by a rationale which was the most important part of the judging process. It included an extensive research section on packaging materials and the packaging needs of the particular product. The quality of the entrants’ cardboard package was also taken into account in determining the overall winners.

Christian Nebe’s design was called “Dumbbell donuts” which packaged donuts vertically in the shape of a dumbbell. It cleverly worked on giving the impression that donuts could be healthy and appealed to a healthy audience. His entry demonstrates talent, energy and original ideas and Christian wins the Silver award for all packages submitted nationally for the category of students in Years 10-12. This is an exceptional award considering that students in other States are a year older in their respective grades. Christian is presented with his certificate and a prize money cheque of $200. His entry also appears in the PCA website for potential packaging designers and manufacturing firms to consider.

As 2012 draws to a close we can reflect on yet another busy year in the Resource Centre. One significant change we have experienced this year has been saying farewell to Mrs Robbie Rentz, Head of Digital Learning and Information Services for the past three and a half years. Robbie has played an integral role in beginning the transformation of Senior and Junior Libraries into places for 21st century learning. We are greatly indebted to Robbie for her vision and energy. We will miss her dynamic leadership and our very best wishes and prayers go with her as she ventures into the future. We are in the process of planning and preparing for the changes that being a 1 to 1 school will mean for the Resource Centre in Senior Library. There is no doubt that this is a very exciting time to be involved in education.

DADS READ TOO – READING INITIATIVE WITH YEAR 9 FATHERS & SONS2012 is National Year of Reading and to mark this event we invited Year 9 boys and their dads/granddads to participate in our inaugural Dads Read Too event. We were very happy to have 12 dads/grandads and their respective sons/grandsons sign up for the challenge.

Our father/son teams were invited to read the same book over the term and discuss the reading along the way. The feedback was enthusiastic and judging by the discussions at our Pizza and Pepsi wrap up, it was an enjoyable way for both parties to connect. Many have borrowed further books to continue into Term 4. Our Pizza and Pepsi evening was enhanced with the company of local published author and ex Marist student/teacher, Michael Gerard Bauer, who most graciously shared his journey as a writer with us. It was an uplifting evening and we thank our participants and Michael Bauer most heartily.

Junior School NewsDear Parents,

A number of parents have written to say how much they enjoyed reading the points made by Father Ron Rolheiser OMI in his article titled “The Three Levels of Christian Discipleship.” In the last Newsletter, I summarised the points for “Essential Discipleship” and in this Reflection, I will summarise the last two phases – ‘Generative Discipleship’ and ‘Radical Discipleship’.

To summarise very briefly: The first phase, ‘Essential Discipleship’, dealt with life from infancy to adolescence and these are the next 2 phases:

Generative Discipleshipo Normally, after Essential Discipleship, we find our way ‘home’. That is, we have our own place to live, a job, a

career, a vocation, a spouse/partner, children, a mortgage, a series of responsibilities and a certain status and identity.

o In Essential Discipleship, the question becomes: ‘How do I give my life away more deeply, more generously and more meaningfully?’ At that stage, we enter the second phase of discipleship.

o Most people reach Generative Discipleship in their 20’s and 30’s, though some take longer. The struggle, however, for self-identity and private fulfilment never completely goes away, but at some point we begin to live more for others than ourselves. For most of us, this will be the longest part of our lives.

o We are now responsible adults who run homes, schools, churches and businesses, but this is not the final stage – we still have to die and this is the most daunting task of all.

Radical Discipleshipo The question for this final stage is:

“How can I live so that my death will be a blessing for my family, my friends and the world?”

o Being a Christian is important in this third phase as our belief in the life and death of Jesus Christ enters our hearts and mind. Simply put, Christians believe that Jesus lived for us and died for us and this is what we are called to do. Jesus lived for others, Generative Discipleship and died for others, Radical Discipleship.

o Father Rolheiser describes this in these words: “Jesus gave his life for us through his activity, through his generative actions for us. Jesus gave his death for us through his passivity, through absorbing, in love, the helplessness, humiliations and loneliness of dying.”

o This is not easy and the journey will require us to ‘sweat blood’, but we are meant to leave this planet in such a way that our diminishment and death is our final, and perhaps, our greatest gift to the world.

There are some challenging and powerful words in the article for all of us, especially as another year draws to a close. This will be the final “Junior News” for the year, but there will be a special “Christmas Newsletter” which will be e-mailed to you at the end of Term 4. In this “Junior News” I will include all the details for the remaining weeks of Term 4, but I will e-mail reminders to you. These last few weeks are always very busy.

ASH CAREAt its last meeting, the College Leadership Team made the decision to close Ash Care immediately. This decision was not taken lightly, but had to be made for a number of reasons, the main ones being:

(1) The complexity and expense of legislation.(2) The difficulty of attracting Staff to co-ordinate the activities during the holidays.

We thank the many families who have supported Ash Care over the years.
