Digital learning helps teachers tailor the learning process to each student’s needs.

Gyeseong Elementary SchoolAbout the clientFounded in 1882, Gyeseong Elementary School in Seoul, South Korea, has 720 students and 125 school personnel. The private Catholic school focuses on developing individuals who are well-adjusted for the future through high-quality and well-rounded education.

ChallengeGyeseong Elementary School wanted to better engage students and enhance their learning experience with interesting, interactive teaching tools. Educators sought to capture students’ attention and increase their enthusiasm to learn. The school also wanted a mobile solution that would expand students’ education outside the classroom.

SolutionTo better engage students in the interactive learning experience and enable them to study outside the classroom, Gyeseong Elementary School turned to Samsung Smart Education.

A 4th grade class of 30 students participated in an experiment supporting two-way multimedia classes. Educators placed a Samsung TS-3 Series IWB in the classroom and each student was given a Samsung GALAXY Tab.

The teacher used Samsung IMS (Interactive Management Solution) software to display information on the IWB and share it with students on their tablets. The Mobile Learning Management System (m-LMS) also provided the teacher access to various education management functions, such as subject matter sharing and assignment management.

Students can ask or answer questions, take quizzes and do homework from their Samsung GALAXY Tab devices and transfer that information back to the teacher. This multimedia communication improved student concentration and provided a more stimulating learning environment.

The Smart Education package also met several of the school’s goals for improvement.

Increased interaction and participationSamsung Smart Education helped to engage the students better, resulting in:

• Increased student concentration and interest, sparked by delivering interactive contents

• Enriched communication by enabling students to ask and answer questions using handheld tablets in real time

• Improved ability to share lessons and save them for future reference

• The ability to perform collaborative group activities us-ing wiki functions

Enhanced mobility in learningSmart Education extended learning beyond the classroom, supplying:

• Increased access to learning materials, enabling stu-dents to continue studying away from the classroom

• Enhanced flexibility to permit students to study virtually anytime and anywhere

• Increased opportunities for experience-based dynamic classes outside the classroom

More efficient learning environmentImplementing Smart Education also increased classroom efficiency, enabling teachers to:

• Monitor and control the information delivered to stu-dents’ tablets

• Administer quizzes, grades and surveys using tablets“I used to hand out pictures or copies of articles, but now students can search for themselves. So I don’t need to spend time in front of the copy machine.”

– Gi-Sung Cho, Teacher, Gyeseong Elementary School

BenefitsThe experiment was so successful that all the classrooms at Gyeseong Elementary School now use Samsung Smart Education technology.

With the TS-3 Series touch screen technology, a teacher can touch or draw on the IWB and transmit the same image simultaneously to students’ tablets. This increases classroom focus and teaching effectiveness. Figure 1.Samsung tablets increase students’ attention span and eagerness to

St. Catherine’s SchoolAbout the clientSt Catherine’s School in Waverley, Sydney, founded in 1856, is Australia’s oldest independent girls’ school and promotes traditional Anglican values. Its 970 students, from kindergarten through grade 12, represent more than 49 cultural backgrounds.

ChallengeThe philosophy of St.Catherine’s is to provide staff and students with the most appropriate learning environment and applications, and the skills and tools they need to succeed in the 21st century. The faculty at St. Catherine’s School wanted students to learn critical skills, such as research, collaboration and creativity, in a digital environment. The school sought to equip each student with an up-to-date computer for use at home and in the classroom. This plan required robust, adaptable devices connected to on-premise and cloud-based software.

SolutionSt. Catherine’s School gave each pupil in grades 5, 7 and 10 a Samsung Series 7 Slate PC. The school’s goals was to provide the optimal, individualized learning environment to students and help students develop self-directed learning habits.

The Series 7 Slate PCs have touch screen and digital stylus capabilities. With S Pens, provided with Samsung Slate PC, students can collaborate effectively and nurture their creativity by writing and drawing on the tablets.

“I am a very strong believer in stylus technology because it allows students to use PCs as digital notepads” says Paul Carnemolla, Head of Information at St. Catherine’s School.

Samsung provided Slate PCs and embedded solutions partnered with Microsoft. The package enhanced one-to-one learning by enabling students to access learning material suited to their level and to share contents with other students.

BenefitsWith the digitalized learning environment, students at St. Catherine’s School have become more engaged in class. Students are encouraged to show their creativity and collaborate with other students using Samsung Series 7 Slate PCs.

Samsung Smart Education helped St. Catherine’s School accomplish key targets.

Increased proficiency in various skillsUsing Series 7 Slate PCs provided students with several digital skill sets:

• Advanced technology experience in working more cre-atively with a digitalized writing and drawing tool

New tools and techniques boost student interest and engagement.

Geeter Middle SchoolAbout the clientGeeter Middle School, located in Memphis, Tennessee, United States, serves approximately 430 students in grades 6 through 8. Of the Memphis City Schools district’s 105,000 strong student population, 90 percent qualify for free or reduced-price lunches. Also, 9 percent speak a language other than English and 16 percent have specific learning disabilities. Geeter Middle School, located in an impoverished urban neighborhood, has been rated a low-performing school.

ChallengeEducators wanted to improve the learning environment to raise the school’s academic performance and encourage an interest in learning among its 6th to 8th grade students. The school had experimented with using applications on tablet PCs, but the technology did not provide an integrated learning platform. In a time of tight education funding, the school wanted an interactive, one-to-one computing solution that provided a demonstrable benefit.

SolutionSamsung has been active in implementing education programs such as “Global Flagship Classroom,” with schools worldwide to bring technology into classrooms. Its goal is to provide learning opportunities to strengthen young minds around the world.

Geeter Middle School’s 6th grade math class was selected for a pilot program using the Samsung Smart Education package. The package consisted of 35 GALAXY Note 10.1 tablets with docking stations, a 65-inch IWB, and a wireless printer, and Samsung Smart School software solution.

The Samsung Smart School solution was developed for Samsung GALAXY Note 10.1 tablets as a one-to-one learning platform. The solution is designed to empower teachers to lead interactive lessons and collaborative group activities using its screen- and content-sharing features.

The technology allows teachers to deliver content more easily to students. Teachers can share their own or an individual student’s screen with the class and monitor student progress in real time. Instructors can also conduct group activities, question-and-answer (Q&A) sessions, tests or instant polls. In addition, digital course materials can be accessed by students at virtually any time. If a paper copy is needed, the teacher and students can print wirelessly from their tablets using the Samsung Mobile Print application.

GALAXY Note’s S Pen technology provides the functionality and precision of a pen and paper. Students can write, draw and interact fluidly on the tablet’s display.

In addition to converting handwriting to text, the device can recognize handwritten algebraic formulas, which the student can then look up and graph. Similarly, a student using a digital textbook can annotate the text with handwritten comments or highlights to enhance information retention and recall.

BenefitsEducators at Geeter Middle School reported that students gravitated to the GALAXY Note tablet technology almost immediately. Students became excited to come to school and no longer hesitated to ask questions in class. Teachers could quickly assess how well each student was solving problems and customize instruction on the spot to match the student’s individual needs.

Because the system tracks how students are using the technology, Geeter Middle School can gather empirical data to determine the most effective teaching approaches.

The Samsung Smart Education package helped Geeter Middle School to achieve many of its educational goals.

Improved academic performanceDigital technology enabled educators to track individual performance, resulting in these improvements:

• Raised academic performance by using data gathered from the tracking function

• Increased student participation through coaching and the monitoring of students’ screens

• Boosted interest and participation by “gamification” Enhanced one-to-one learning environment Smart Education provided several enhancements designed to help students learn at their own pace:

• Individualized learning suited to each student’s level and needs

• Advanced techology including creative tools that help students to ask questions privately in real time
