Repeated appraisals by residents and environmental organisations to bring life to the only surviving water body in Adambakkam has yielded success. Days before the commencement of the northeast monsoon, the local authorities who stepped out to inspect the lake, as-sured to provide funds for the restora-tion of Adambakkam lake.

Funds to the tune of Rs 1.5 crore would be provided by Alandur MLA T M Anbarasan (Rs 50 lakh) and MP R S Bharati (Rs 1 crore), while the Pub-lic Works Department would execute it.‘We need to prepare the estimate with the help of the PWD offi cials. There would soon be a meeting with them to come to a conclusion,’ said Anbarasan.

The offi cial of engineer rank with the PWD has not yet prepared the estimate for the project and that has been the reason for the decade-long delay, say residents.

There should be quick restoration without procrastination, they say.

The lake, which has shrunk to half its original capacity, has multiple problems: sewage contamination, encroachments, open defecation and intrusion of invasive plants.Besides checking the

prevailing problems, the offi cials should lay walkers path and other infrastructure in order to make the lake premises an entertainment spot. Sreeram Mahadevan, a long-time resident of Thillai Ganga Nagar, said: ‘The main task is to channelise the inlet and outlet of the lake so that the excess water would reach Veerangal Odai. Open defecation is another big-

ger problem.’According to the MLA, more than 80 huts evicted from the lake premises in 2006 returned within a few months. ‘A bund to the height of 15 feet would be constructed and native species planted on it,’ he mentioned.‘I thank our former Coun-cillor Muthu for playing an important role in organising a joint meeting. Restoration of Adambakkam lake will improve the water table and benefi t the residents of Adambakkam, Thil-lai Ganga Nagar and Nanganallur,’ said Augustine David, president, Federation of Adambakkam Welfare Associations.

The rail museum on New Avadi Road now has a gazebo near the play area, which is useful to host small parties and, hence attracts many visitors, say the public. Arun Devraj, curator of the museum, said they have been renting out the gazebo from last October and it has had good since patronage. He further adds that its their way of drawing the attention of the public.

He stated that to rent the space, people have to inform the museum authorities in advance and buy tickets for their guests. They are also welcome to bring their own eatables. They can make their own decorations. The cost of the ticket is Rs 25 per head for school children and for the general adult it is Rs 40. We can also offer some discount on the ticket price if they book the space for parties. The cost of the ticket includes toy train ride and access to the children’s play

area in addition to the museum. Though the museum is open only up to 6 pm on week-days, for parties, they can extend the time up to 8.30 pm.

Benjamin Franklin, a resident of Con-stable Road, Ayana-varam, who hired the space for his child’s birthday, was full of praise for the comfort it provides and particularly for the revamped galleries and pub-lic conveniences maintained neat and tidy. A new washroom block has clean restrooms for men and women in addition to an inclusive bathroom for persons with disabili-ties and also a lactating room for nursing mothers.

Padmavathy, another visitor, who has booked the space for a small get-together, says that part from its

natural ambience the space was also awesome with huge galleries with ocean of information detailing ICF’s role in the working of the railways. The museum also dem-onstrates how tracks are changed for trains.

Aruldoss, a longtime resident of New Avadi Road and a regular at the museum, says that all credit goes to Arun Devraj for making the space an entertainment zone in addition to it being a treasure trove of information.
