W hen I became a member of the Omicron chapter of Phi

Delta Chi at University of Southern California, I had

no idea that in less than 10 years, I would be helping

charter a chapter at a new col- lege of pharmacy. Initially

as a brother, I was looking to gain leadership skills, net-

work with people whom shared my passion for

pharmacy, and make lasting relationships. It is only

now how I see that PDC helped me develop into

more than I anticipated. It is a pleasure to see how I can

“give” back to a fraternity that has helped me foster indi-

vidual growth, and now I feel blessed to share my pas-

sion with new brothers in the hopes they will lead suc-

cessful lives and prosperous pharmacy careers.

It has been truly a pleasure watching our brothers here at California Northstate

University College of Pharmacy grow into a cohesive unit. I have seen them develop

traditions, such as the global food lunch gathering, immunizations health fairs and the

top 100 drug challenge, into highly successful events that both faculty and students look

forward to each year. Their unity and togetherness to make this fraternity into a role

model organization at our college is impressive. In addition, we have fostered growth,

mentorship and friendship that I am sure will last a lifetime.

As we begin our 3rd year as a fraternity, I am saddened to see our inaugural class

graduate but ecstatic to see how their careers and lives will be forever changed by phar-

macy and Phi Delta Chi. We will now have an alumni group that can help mentor, pro-

vide guidance and support as we continue to develop a strong fraternity here on cam-

pus. I wish our graduating phi delta chi brothers good luck and thank them for the

wonderful memories they have given me. Remember when you graduate, that although

we are not on campus together, we are still connected through our fraternal bond.

Give back to your community, your profession and your fraternity.

H aving to work so hard to build a strong foundation for the new frater-

nity without any opportunity for fun created a low morale among the

chapter. This low morale eventu- ally led to minimal participation,

motivation, and enthusiasm. I took on the Worthy Chief Coun-

selor position because I wanted to make a difference for my brothers.

In order to do it correctly, who else would I turn to for help but the

brothers themselves? After sur- veying the chapter, results simulta-

neously shocked and motivated me as I had just discovered my goals

as the upcoming WCC.

My ultimate goal was to fulfill every brother’s reason to why

they joined Phi Delta Chi. Every- one pledged for different reasons

and I learned the hard way that if I could create pride and a sense of

worth for being a part of PDC in each brother, I will have accom-

plished my goal. I was going to do this one piece at a time by addressing the major areas we

lacked: boosting up morale by having more brotherhood events, providing more professional

events, creating excitement for recruitment during rush season, etc. With the full support of my

Executive Board and the rest of my active brothers, we did this and then some.

During my term as WCC, more brotherhood events such as the Yosemite Retreat were

created. There were more professional events available such as Celebrando Immunizations. The

chapter delivered our first P3 Roast, created our first newsletter, and set up our biggest Vegas

Retreat yet. We maintained our infamous Top 200 Challenge, displayed our first window dis-

play, crossed an awesome pledge class of twenty-two, and much, much more. Slowly, the chap-

ter’s motivation, enthusiasm, and participation began to swell. It eventually transformed into

pride. It wasn’t until Worthy speeches when I realized I had accomplished my goal when broth-

ers gave positive reasons why they joined Phi Delta Chi and stated that they were proud to be a

Phi Delt.

Within pharmacy school, Phi Delta Chi is the best thing that has happened to me thus

far. It has taught me so much and developed me into a leader. Just to mention a few, I am more

confident in public speaking, I have learned to be patient, and I have honed my management

and organization skills. I have gained so much experience and so many lifelong friends through

this organization. Hell, it even gave me a girlfriend! Without PDC, I would not be the person I

am today or had the opportunity to meet any of the great people I call brothers. I am so happy

I chose Phi Delta Chi and I want to thank Gamma Iota for believing in me and choosing me.

T he Worthy Vice Counselor position was one that I had coveted for many

months before I actually had it. I desperately wanted to be in a

position where my ideas and opinions would be heard and

utilized in order to improve our chapter. I couldn’t wait to get

the chapter rolling in a direction of constant passion, excite-

ment, and improvement. When I saw that I would be working

alongside, David Pham, I knew only good things could come

for our chapter for the new year. My excitement grew even more

when I saw the Worthy board and the passion that each of our

officers had for their position and for the chapter.

Professionally, this last year has been great for Gamma

Iota. We’ve been able to expand our current top-notch profes-

sional events from last year, lead- ing the way in educating both

students and providing our pro- fessional services to the public.

Some highlights from our annual events include our immunizing

over 500 patients at our Immunization fair at Celebrando Nuestra Salud and getting the

school riled up for our Top 200 Challenge.

This year, with the enthusiasm and passion of our members pulling us through, we

were able to add new professional events to our growing list of annual events. Chris Fuller,

inspired by the students’ utter confusion over millimoles, led a Calculations Workshop with

fellow member, Jenny Wong, open to the entire student body. This event included an edu-

cational powerpoint, practice worksheets, and on-the-spot Gamma Iota tutors for all atten-

dees. Eric Nguyen, a newly initiated brother from our Beta Class, led his fellow brothers in

initiating a Top 200 newsletter, in which the top 200 drugs were organized and important

counseling points were included for all drugs. Christine Oh, led the chapter in creating not

just one, but two window displays providing education on Depression and Insomnia.

As Worthy Vice President, I am extremely proud of our members in putting for all

the time and effort to initiate and participate in all of our events. I felt it should be a chal-

lenge in order to encourage members to participate in a professional event each month, but

I was astonished at how much enthusiasm the brothers displayed throughout the year. I am

extremely proud to be a part of the Gamma Iota chapter and felt I have learned a great deal

about the compassion and dedication of our members. I look forward to seeing the chapter

grow even more in the coming year and cannot wait to see what we will accomplish next.

S erving as Worthy Keeper of Records and Seals (WKRS) for this term has been a distinguished honor. Being WKRS has broadened my horizon beyond the typical secretarial obli-

gations. I am a firm believer that whatever you put in, the outcome would be just as rewarding.

One of my greatest ac- complishments as

WKRS was organizing our chap- ter’s documents. I believe organization and docu- mentation are the keys to preserving any organiza- tion. Hence, I cre-ated a filing system for each wor- thy position. This allowed for each officer to physi- cally and electroni-cally document all items that they have created. These documents were either placed in their own worthy folder or an electronic folder that could be easily ac-cessed by any future board mem- bers.

As an active member of Phi Delta Chi, PDC

has helped me grow as an individual. Prior to being a brother, I would have never thought that I would join a fraternity. But, I do not regret joining this fraternity. PDC has developed my leadership skills beyond my naïve imagination of a former P1 student. Soon after being elected WKRS, I was president and co-founder of Diverse Women in Pharmacy and vice president of CPhA. To this day, I believe PDC is my core foundation for my leadership skills in CNU.

If I did not join PDC, then I do not think I would have gotten involved in

other organizations. This fraternity has opened my eyes to other dimensions in pharmacy school. In addition, PDC has introduced me to brothers that I would consider my friends for life. They have helped, supported, and cheered for every-thing that I have done thus far as a brother and as a pharmacy student. I am just honored to be part of Phi Delta Chi.

I magine a job you can wake up every morning excited to perform. I’m not saying that being the 2011-2012 WKF was a pocketful of sun- shine everyday. Knowing, however, what our board was accomplishing with each passing day was an incredible feeling. Before I go into the greatness that is being Worth Keeper of Finance, I’d like to comment on the honor of being apart of the 2011-2012 Gamma Iota Phi Delta Chi Executive Board. We had a great board and I loved contributing ideas and advice to the several decisions we were able to make together. From Quan’s persistence towards having assistants, Crys-tal’s ridiculously amazing ability to organize, David’s down-to-earth hu- mor, Wendy’s idolizing worthy ability to fix every- thing, Christine’s back-ground giggling, Cindy finding projects to keep her busy despite our lack of alum-nus, to Sammy’s endless strategies to build brotherhood, this has been a memora-ble year. I ran for the WKF position as a strong supporter of our brother’s ideas, ac-tions and dreams. I grew up learning the value of a dollar and appreciating its value down to the penny. I followed this same motto in respect to our treasury and our brothers’ financial views. Each brother has made a large financial invest-ment in our fraternity and as far as I was concerned, they all deserved to reap in the benefits of their investment every step of the way. Whether this meant giving back to them as an organization, providing monetary aid towards their profes-sional projects, having funds to encourage other brothers’ attendance at their events, or consistently sponsoring brotherhood events to contribute towards a brotherhood we all love, I made it a point to ensure our treasury could accomplish all of the above at all times. As this year’s WKF, I believe our chapter has made great financial strides in several ways. We have covered the costs of completing two thorough professional window displays. We were able to sponsor over 35 brothers to attend Alpha Psi’s Bid Dinner. We have hosted a monthly on-campus brotherhood luncheon. We helped fund a cost-friendly Yosemite Retreat for all brothers. We, together as one, have gone a long way Gamma Iota! I am so grateful to be among a group of out-standing leaders in pharmacy!

T hroughout the past year, my increasing involvement with the Phi Delta Chi fraternity has given me the chance to grow in many ways. Upon joining, I initially considered it as only an organization that provided a social network among phar- macy students. But when I became more active and served as Worthy Corre-spondent, my definition of PDC changed. It exceeded my original expectations of only completing the monthly chapter reports and communicating with fel-low PDC brothers of other chapters. I learned and experienced the meaning of real passion and true brotherhood. Documenting our chapter health fairs and social events allowed me to reflect on all the memo-ries and accomplishments we as brothers developed together. I joined PDC knowing it was a new fra-ternity with limited re- sources, but I knew PDC had great potential to grow. I wanted to be a part of that change. Recently, I led the Window Display Committee. The number of brothers who willingly signed up to work with me to produce a project that I have de-sired to implement for a while left with a sense of deep appreciation. Seeing the dedication and hard work each brother invested in completing this project made me realize the great support I had. We completed not one, but two win-dow displays. We also had the opportunity to collaborate with fellow Univer-sity of Pacific Alpha Psi brothers at a health fair where we displayed these very first window displays. Networking with other brothers, collaborating with close friends and achieving one of my long desired goals all happened through PDC. Though my term as Worthy Correspondent has come to end, I believe it has only served as a stepping stone for me to further contribute to Phi Delta Chi. It has motivated me be the best I can be during these few years in phar-macy school. I know I will continue to work wholeheartedly with high spirits with current and future new brothers. Phi Delta Chi has definitely challenged me to reach high and has introduced me to friends I am grateful to call my brothers. Go Phi Dex!

What exactly is this Worthy Prelate position?

I did not even know what the heck it is other than “historian” prior to running for this position. But I decided to run for it anyway. I blinded ac-cept the nomination because I wanted to take on a leader-ship role. I was not involved with school much so this was an opportunity for me to obtain some leadership skill. However, this new role was a challenge at first be-cause I did not have a guid- ance so I had to start find-ing out more about this role. Luckily, I knew that I was not alone in this and knew that my brothers are there to guide and assist me when- ever I needed help. It is this brotherhood/ friendship bond that I like most about PDC. Knowing that they would not hesitate to lend a hand for me as I would lend a hand for them, is what PDC is really about. Through countless pic- tures, our chapter is able to look back at what we had accomplished via photos. It is those memories that will bring us closer together and to grow as a chapter. We have had an amazing time together through the 5 weeks of rushing and pledging, the Rush Dinner, our broth-erhood retreat, and so much more. We formed a close bond through this and it will be shown in our scrapbook. These photos will refresh our mind of the fun and exciting times we had together. Linda and I are excited to get the scrapbook finish for this year so our brothers can check it out and start cracking jokes at each other. I am more excited about our first Newsletter for the chapter. The commit-tee has been working hard to get our first publication out. This is a sign of great progress for our chapter. There will be great things to come and I cannot wait to see what we will accomplish in the years to come. On a final note, with the addi-tion of the Beta Class and the brothers of PDC, these amazing people has made my job more fun. Each of the brothers brings new ideas and creativity to the fraternity that makes them so unique and incredible. With Phi Delta Chi being so diverse, that is why it makes us stands out from other organization. Thank you for giving me the opportunity and honor to serve as the Worthy Prelate. I am anticipating next year will be much more fun and awesomeness as our chapter keeps on grow-ing.

A s our chapter is in its infancy stage, I was not sure how the position of Worthy Alumni Liai-son (WAL) would pan out, as we do not yet have any chapter alumni. I spent a lot of my focus on maintain- ing strong connections with our brothers on rotation so that we will have strong future alumni support. We also maintained connec- tions with PDC alumni in our faculty, inviting them to our events and monthly brotherhood luncheons. As we met local alumni from other chapters, we have also maintained a contact list to help build our alumni chapter. As the WAL, the main event I was in charge of was the Roast. This was the first ever roast for our chapter. It is a celebration for the P3 students before they move on to the next chapter in their lives, rotations. This event was held at Sheepherders Bar and Grille. It featured a slide show, speech, and present dedicated to each P3 brother. This event is a celebration and a thank you for all the hard work that the P3s have put in to PDC, and for their continued sup-port as alumnus.

Throughout my school career, I would have never imagined join-ing a fraternity, but becoming a brother of Phi Delta Chi has been a re-warding experience. It has been an honor serving on the 2011-2012 ex-ecutive board. PDC has helped me grow and express my views as a leader. I would like to express thanks to the entire chapter of Gamma Iota. Through PDC I have met many extraordinary people and am able to call them my friends, as they say, we really are “brothers for life.”

D id you know…I actually told Zach (Alpha’s Class WMA), that “I would like to be Pledge Master next year” before I was an actual PDC brother!!! True story. The Beta Class “novel” was drafted in the summer without knowing who the characters were, but I knew I wanted to write a love story. Within a suc-cessful relationship, there was much needed effort, es-pecially winning the hearts of many strangers. As I sought out to seek these strangers, I was deeply excited to gather all the char- acters to help me write an awesome love story. The process was quite intoxi-cating, with many sleepless weekends filled with ad-ventures in downtown Sacra- mento and Chesapeake Apt #194. Nonetheless, the journey was priceless. The next process was choosing the characters, which was nerve wrecking and exciting at the same time. Since a great story cannot be ac-complished without breathtaking characters, in the end 22 characters were cho-sen, 11 males and 11 females. During the 5 weeks of pledging, I developed twenty-two wonderful rela-tionships along with rekindling old ones. Not only were the Beta Class facing diffi-cult tasks and situations, as WMA, I was also developing my own weaknesses. In-stead of taking on the strict and dominant WMA role, I allowed myself to once again wear my heart on my sleeve. The role choice actually played in my favor, since the Beta Class never once disappointed me as their WMA. As much loved I poured out to the Beta Class, I received back and more, as the class surpassed be-yond my own expectations. I felt so much pride as the Beta class worked together so well, along with having many successful events such as, the Pledge Bidding and Brotherhood Halloween Party. My love story was not accomplished alone, as I had my awesome Gamma Iota Brothers working together side-by-side to help. Together the Chapter en-dured long nights, rain or shine, the brothers stood by with the pledges and I to help create many epic unforgettable moments. Overall, I was more than honored to have led such a remarkable class; the journey was worthwhile. Thank you GI Chapter for giving me the opportunity to grow and strengthen my weakness as a leader. Best love story EVER…thank you.

P DC, what can I say? Within the last year and a half I have grown so much as a person due to not just the opportu-

nities the fraternity pro- vides, but because of the wonderful and amazing brothers of the Chapter. To be honest, the reason I originally decided to run for WIG in the first place was because I thought the name sounded cool. Wor- thy Inner Guard, it has such a nice ring to it. Going in I had no idea what to expect or the responsibili- ties the position entailed. With planning, preparing, and executing Rush on such an accelerated sched- ule I felt like a turtle loss at sea as I never had any other experience in a leadership position. Even without asking, the Chap-ter stepped forward to help with David Pham and Crystal Tseng, the respec- tive WCC and WVC of the time, offering their guid- ance, never shying away from those distracting GChats during class.

Stepping up to the challenge our Chapter paved the way towards Rush

with the goal of genuinely getting to know the potentials on a personal level. With that in mind, we planned events such as the Pool Party & Barbeque and the Play-With-Your-Food-a-thon to provide a fun atmosphere for potentials to learn our what fraternity is about. Holding with Gamma Iota tradition, we held the Formal Rush Dinner at the Morgan Creek Country Club consisting of over 80 attendees with 28 potentials among them. It was a spectacular event only made possible by the hard work, coordination, and dedication of all the Broth-ers.

Looking back, being elected as WIG and rushing our Beta class has

been one of the most memorable and proud accomplishments of my phar-

macy school career. I was once just one of the people standing on the side-

lines just watching, but never actively participating. PDC has changed that for

me, giving me the courage and support to step outside my comfort zone to

pursue not just the academics, but all that the pharmacy profession has to of-

fer. I am thankful for having the opportunity to serve as WIG and will never

forget the lifelong friendships I have built because of Phi Delta Chi.

L ast year, Gamma Iota created a brand new worthy position called Worthy Brotherhood Chair (WBC).

The responsibility of the WBC is to create social events to bring the broth- ers of Phi Delta Chi together, strengthening unity and rapport. I decided to take on this role because I felt strongly about building positive relationships within the PDC family.

The brothers of Gamma Iota have been extremely suppor- tive of my ideas and goals that I wanted to ac- complish. They gave me the confidence that I needed to bring my ideas to life. The first thing that I did as a WBC was to present a PDC brother with a Brother of the Month (BOM) award to acknowledge his/her dedication and hard work to the chapter. It was a delight to see how the BOM award program encourages and increased participation among the brothers.

Later, I implemented a monthly brotherhood luncheon, in which,

PDC alumni were also invited. The luncheons were a success because not only did it bring us closer together, it also presented us with a posi-tive image: unity.

To further strengthen and build upon the bond that we have es-

tablished, I planned and organized PDC’s very first retreat in Yosemite. The retreat away from home, successfully built camaraderie and en-hance leadership in our fraternity. The brothers made many great memories and look forward to next year’s retreat.

I am very happy and satisfied to have accomplished my goals as

WBC, but I could not have done it without everyone’s help. Thank you for believing in me and also for giving me the chance to push myself to become a more responsible leader.

The white coat is the most ubiquitous symbol in health related schools. It is acknowledge-

ment from the previous generation of healthcare providers that they find you deserving of carrying

on a legacy of dedication, a legacy o f

professionalism, a legacy of car-

ing. The white coat ceremony

therefore, becomes the most dis-

tinct milestone in a pharmacy stu-

dent’s life; it is a culmination of

dreaming of the profession in high

school, working hard in under-

graduate school, enduring the ap-

plication and interview process, to fi-

nally being rewarded for all of the hard work.

A unique aspect of the ceremony at CNCP was a

powerful reminder that no one is alone at CNCP,

not during class, not during white coat cere-

mony. The atmosphere of apprehensive exhila-

ration everyone felt did not only stem from one-

self, but from the realization that not only you

have come a long way, but people you study with, eat with, pass with, have been following you on

the difficult road of school as well. Our cere-

mony was held after a year of school rather than be-

fore school. Instead of having to meet strangers and

walk with strangers, I had the privilege of know- ing

their names, being in their teams, and being able to

cheer for their success made the event worth

waiting a year. I could not feel alone at the cere-

mony. I had friends, team mates, family, and of

course, I had my brothers.

Being in PDC has been a rewarding ex-

perience for me. The brotherhood we shared

helped me to forge strong bonds throughout my

school year, and those bonds resonated strongly dur-

ing the white coat ceremony. When I wAas entering the theater to line up for the ceremony, my

upper year brothers were there congratulating me. As I walked up the aisle to get my white coat,

my brothers cheered for me. The faculty member who coated me was Dr. Frausto. This was spe-

cial to me for many reasons. My first experience in a pharmacy was as a volunteer from UC Davis,

and Dr. Frausto was my preceptor who introduced me to pharmacy. She was the first instructor I

had. She was my PDC advisor. For me, it felt like everything had fit together perfectly, going into

pharmacy, going to this school, joining PDC, the support I received during school and during the

ceremony made it a special milestone in my life.

Having the opportunity to attend and experience the 68th Grand Council was

an eye opener as it was my first national fraternity conference. At first I was

hesitant because it was in the wild city of Buffalo, NY and I was going by my-

self since chapter funds were low and the trip was expensive. For the benefit of

the chapter, I sucked it up and booked my flight. My Phi Delta Chi brotherhood

experience started right away on the

plane as I flew across the nation with brother Ralph

Saroyan. We chatted it up over some adult bever-

ages and six hours later, we were in Buffalo.

Since I was the only Gamma Iota bro go-

ing, the four Alpha Psi bros that were going quickly

adopted me as one of their own and invited me to

stay with them in their hotel room. I had an awe-

some time spending the majority of the weekend

with them. Meetings and events were planned for

the whole weekend and I met so many Phi Delts all

over the US that I still keep in contact today through

Facebook. The vibe was different than any other

conference I had been to. Even though most people

did not know each other, there was so much brother-

hood in the air.

Meetings were important because they

aimed to help bros develop leadership

skills as well as their chapter. Brothers would get a

chance to exchange ideas for events, fundraisers,

and more from their own chapters. At night, Phi

Dex would take over downtown as we created a

huge pub crawl and danced the night away at night clubs. In between business and socializing,

I got to experience the city itself such as amazing Buffalo wings and the beautiful Niagara

Falls. The awards banquet was on the very last night and I had the honor of accepting Gamma

Iota’s charter.

Looking back, I am grateful that I took the

opportunity to go. I expanded my network of alumni

and collegiate brothers as close as UOP to as far as

Florida. I had fun touring a different city and partying

with my brothers. I brought back valuable informa-

tion to my own chapter and put Gamma Iota on

the PDC map. The experience I had during Grand

Council weekend is something I would want every

Phi Delt brother to be a part of.

As an organization, the brothers of Phi Delta Chi are

proud to have organized and provided free immunization

to the community here in Sacramento. Last year, we had

our first immunization event called Celebrando Nuestra

Salud which means Celebrating Our Health. The event

was held on October 9, 2011 from 10:00am -4:00pm at

Southside Park in Sacramento. A total of 20 of the Phi

Delta Chi brothers volunteered to help with this immuni-

zation event.

to work hard and

to provide the

best service to the

communities. We

work effectively

as a team in pro-

viding vaccina-

tion. Some broth-

ers helped facili-

tate the line, assist

people in filling

out the immuniza-

tion forms while

other helped in

drawing the vac-

cines and pro-

vided the flu shot.

The brothers provided influenza vaccinations to 662

people (primarily Latino) with the age of 18 and

older.

Overall, this event was a great success. As a frater-

nity, we are proud of our accomplishment in being

able to establish a volunteer network that provided

great services such as this immunization event to the

Sacramento communities. I had a great time during

the event and this is what made me proud of being a

PDC

-Lisa Khou

Special thanks to: Dr. Sonya Frausto who supplied

us with the vaccines; beta class (pledging class at

that time) for coming out to support and help with

drawing vaccines

The weather was beautiful on the day of the event.

Many families in the Sacramento communities

brought their children, grandparent, wife and hus-

band to get their free flu vaccination. People form

lines that wrap about half a mile around the park.

Seeing the crowd and people eagerness made the

brothers of phi delta chi excited. We felt motivated

The Brothers of Phi Delta Chi held

their 3rd annual multicultural potluck

for California Northstate University, College

of Pharmacy to raise proceeds

for the Sacramento Food Bank & Family Ser-

vices. The theme was called,

“Around the Dish in 80 Days.”

All the brothers of PDC each brought a

cultural dish that fed a minimum of 10 people.

Henna tattoos, by the artistic Payal Patel, were pro-

vided. During this potluck, Phi Delta Chi

was able to raise $438.00 in which 100% of the

proceeds were given. At that moment, it was the

most successful multicultural event the Gamma

Iota Chapter has ever done.

The lunchroom was decorated

with colorful streamers hanging

from the ceiling, with a hand-

made globe of the world in the

middle as the focal point. The

“globe” was decorated with flags

of various countries and toy

planes to symbolize how people

were always traveling around the

world. Music was played to in-

crease the ambience for the event.

Descriptive tags were placed in

front of each dish.

All the Brothers took part in setting

up, collecting the donations, serving the

attendees, and cleaning up. The event sparked

more school involvement from the students,

faculties and staffs. In addition, it tightened the

bond of all the Brothers. Everyone

mingled and relaxed as they ate.

Page 24: PDC-Gamma Iota Newsletter 2011-2012

This year I am pleased to announce that the Gamma Iota Chapter

has completed their first professional window display! Doing

things for the first time in a new chapter comes with a lot of chal-

lenges. Without having past displays to look upon it is essentially

up to you to create a format that will serve as an example to future

Phi Dex. Thankfully we had an awesome committee leader in

Christine Oh and very capable workers: Marlene, Steven, Sasi,

Dolma, Felicia, Rachael, Kim, Eric and Priya. We also recruited

the efforts of Loc to provide the depression display his own

artistic abilities and Jared helped out during the health fair.

To fit the format of the Alpha Psi Health Fair

in Calvary Presbyterian Church we split into

two teams and created two window displays.

The first was based on depression awareness

while the second one was on insomnia. We

set up meetings in which we had to ask our-

selves, “What is a window display?” and

“What do we want the public to know about

our topics?” Our Google adventures showed

us previous Phi Delta Chi window displays

but none of them really fit where we wanted

to go with our vision. This left it to us on how

we wanted to create our display. Our greatest

challenge was how much information is too

much and how simple is too simple. Once we

got over this hurdle, the rest flowed naturally.

At the Alpha Psi

health fair we found

a lot of fellow

brothers who

thankfully had simi-

lar looking window

displays. To make

our booths unique

we passed out

Easter eggs contain-

ing chocolate and

either insomnia tips

or happiness quotes

This is Alpha Psi’s third year

with this event and it looked

impressive with all of their dis-

plays and other organizations

that showed up. Various people

came up to our displays and

spoke about general things so

there was no difficulty in speak-

ing to people about our topics. I

feel the people who came

learned something and we as the

presenters learned

things from them as well.

What I learned from this experience is

even if you have a daunting task the

fact that you’re doing it with brothers

makes it a worthwhile experience

which smoothes out any bumps you

experience along the way. We didn’t

always agree on ideas initially but we

were able to discuss it and work out

very nice compromises. I appreciate

that everyone was able to give their

best efforts as brothers and people

even unrelated to the committee

helped take part in our displays. I am

proud of what we accomplished and I

know our displays as a Chapter will

just continue to get better and better.

-Gian Medina

20

Page 25: PDC-Gamma Iota Newsletter 2011-2012

Strapped with two amazing window displays

and a basket full of easter eggs, nine inspired

Phi Delts by the names of Sasi Jetawatana,

Steven Ma, Gian Medina, Eric Nguyen,

Rachael Olsufka, Christine Oh, Marlene Ta-

porco, Felicia Win, and Jared Yoshizumi

headed to Alpha Psi’s 3rd annual multicul-

tural health fair with the hopes of unleashing

their knowledge about insomnia and depres-

sion on the Stockton community. The health

fair took place at the Calvary Presbyterian

Church in Stockton and it was freeto the

general public. For many of us it was our

first time attending such a health fair so we

were very excited to participate and offer

our services to the community.

While the attendance from the community was

minimal, overall I think this

was a great experience for our chapter. We

gained valuable insight on how

to prepare for a health fair, how it is set up,

and ideas on possible

services that can be offered. I definitely think

our chapter can put on a

similar health fair in our area and I would like

to play a part in seeing

that happen in the near future. Christian, a fel-

low Alpha Psi brother, also

encourages our chapter to put on our own

health fair and can offer us great

tips and advice since his chapter participates in

at least two health fairs

Attending Alpha Psi’s health fair not only gave us valuable health fair experience, it also gave our chapter an opportunity to show our more profes-sional side rather than the social side that Alpha Psi may know us for. We got the chance to talk with many of their brothers we have met before as well as many of the NIBs. They appreciated and thanked us for coming all the way from Rancho Cordova to participate in their health fair. This was a great stepping stone for us to build a better relationship with their chapter and hopefully it will lead to more collaborations with them in the future.

There were about two dozen booths offering services such as

medication reviews, diabetes screenings, cholesterol checks

and oral cancer screenings. Our chapter had two booths set

up that included window displays on insomnia and depres-

sion. Each window display layout consisted of causes, signs

and symptoms, non-pharmacological and pharmacological

treatments for each disease. In addition, we provided hand-

outs and passed out Easter eggs that contained a delicious

chocolate candy and either a good sleep hygiene tip for in-

somnia or inspirational quote for depression.

The window display committee did an amazing job completing

the display boards and coming up with creative ways to make

them appeal to the general public. Colorful pictures and com-

mon language made it easy for people to understand. An

older couple came by the insomnia booth and told me they really

appreciated the sleep hygiene tips and said that we did a great

job with our display. To get that reaction from the public made

me feel like all the hard work our committee put in over spring

break really paid off and it inspires me to strive to get that same

reaction in all the future health fairs I attend.

After last year’s remarkable success and with the ever expanding

number of students at the California Northstate University College of Phar-

macy, Brother of Phi Delta Chi will once again be hosting the Second Annual

Top 200

Challenge on April 9 and April 11 of 2012.

Planning and organizing for this event was definitely challenging.

There were many things to take into consideration that I would never have

thought about alone. The hardest part about putting together the Top 200

Challenge was the small details that pertained to it. These small details range

anywhere from writing preliminary round questions, making answer sheets,

assigning sub-committees to handle different sections of questions, jeopardy

round

questions, lightening round questions, anything that dealt with running a

proficient game show to house and challenge the CNUCP students. However,

after meeting with last year’s committee leader, our committee this year felt

more comfortable and understanding of what had to go in to uphold to the

excellent results of last year’s Top 200 Challenge.

The Top 200 Challenge is a 2 day event that starts off with a pre-

liminary round of those that signed up. Here, student pharmacists are tested

on their knowledge based on brand/generics, sigs, indications, and even spell-

ing. From this preliminary round, we choose the top students (16 teams con-

sisting of 3 students each). The chosen students are able to form their own

teams of 3 to compete in the CHALLENGE. One game buzzer will be placed

in between two opposing teams. The first person to hit the buzzer after the

question is read by the host gets to answer within 15 seconds. If they cannot

answer, the other team has a chance to steal and the points go to them. Our

challenge consists of jeopardy and lighting rounds making the competition fun

and fierce. Students are pushed to their limit their speed and

knowledge resulting in a final head-to-head round between 2 teams

that are determined to win the $50 Visa gift card prize for EACH of

their teammates.

With the help of 10 Brothers, organizing this event was

made possible. As student pharmacists of CNUCP, we are usually

swamped with studying or working on other things to better ad-

vance our career and the practice of pharmacy; adding this event to

our plate was not easy. Without the Phi Dex Brothers, I could not

fathom, let alone imagine where I’d even start. Together, we

strategically divided the work based on everyone’s strengths: from

writing the questions, writing emails, sending out the study guide,

filtering of questions, and advertisement of event, flyer publishing,

and many other things that you never would’ve thought of.

Everyone tackled their tasks diligently with pride and enthusiasm

to finally be seen in 2 weeks to come. Without a doubt, this event

will reflect how much hard work all of us have put into it. Phi Delta

Chi. We are the leaders in pharmacy and this event has become one

of the main events that shine positively upon our chapter!

There is excitement in the air at

California Northstate University this

week as the school is preparing

for ::queue thematic music:: Greek

Week. The weeklong event is being

held for the first time in the school’s

history to raise money for charity while

having some friendly competition among

the school’s three fraternities (Phi Delta

Chi, Kappa Psi, and Rho Pi Phi). At the

start of the week each fraternity will

donate $200 to enter the competition.

With each event the fraternities will

earn points for how well they place. At

the end of the week the fraternity with

the most points from the combined

events will receive $350 to donate the

charity of their choice. The second place

fraternity will receive $150 to donate,

and the third place fraternity $100. Phi

Delta Chi will be donating the amount

we win to our national philanthropic

partner St. Jude Children’s Hospital.

As chair for this committee it is

rewarding to see the competitive side of

all my brothers come out. We have been

talking for a few weeks now on

strategies to employ during each game

to ensure a PDC victory. The Greek

Week committee has done an excellent

job at planning games that will showcase

each fraternity’s athletic abilities, skill,

and intelligence while simultaneously

maximizing participation in each event.

The events planned are men’s and

women’s basketball, co-ed flag football,

co-ed kickball, co-ed relay race, and a

winner take all quiz bowl.

This event has brought the

brothers together in a way unlike any

other event, where we are living out

AAAE to the max. The PDC men have

stepped up to help out the girls in

getting up to speed on the rules of

basketball, flag football, and kickball.

Penang Pham, a co-chair for this

committee, has really stepped up to the

plate by having several practices to

teach the basics and help come up with

some basic plays for the PDC women’s

basketball team.

I know I speak for all of

Gamma Iota when I say I look for-

ward to working together with my

brothers to represent PDC while

winning some money for St. Jude’s!

Go Phi Dex! AAAE!.

The Top 200 Counseling

Review Project is an ambitious

project that aims to help prepare the

brothers of PDC and our fellow CNU

students for IPPE rotations. The

goal is to create a simple and concise

way to learn basic drug counseling

points that are often communicated

to patients in community

pharmacies. Drug counseling is

arguably the most primary duty of

an intern pharmacist, but is a subject

that has not been emphasized enough

in class particularly for first-year

students. This project will help

students become competent,

knowledgeable, and confident as

intern pharmacists when they go out

on rotations in the coming months.

The first step of this project

was to create a single database that

compiled all Top 200 drugs that were

separated by class. The database

includes the brand/generic name,

class, indication, adverse effects, and

a list of major counseling points for

each drug. A committee was put

together, and drug assignments were

split up among the members.

Information was taken from various

educational sources including

Micromedex, Lexicomp, and Clinical

Pharmacology. The database is now

complete, and will be accessible for

all of PDC in the future.

From this database, 6 drugs

are selected each month to be printed

onto flashcards and distributed to the

fraternity at the monthly meeting.

The 6 flashcards have drugs from

different classes, but the classes will

be recurring throughout the year.

For example, for each month there

will be an antibiotic, diabetes medica-

tion, hypertension medication, etc.

There will be some changes to this

pattern occasionally so that less

common classes are touched upon.

This way, students may grasp on the

recurring counseling points that are

prominent within drug classes. A

small committee of three volunteers

that rotate each month are

responsible for the logistics of

preparing the flashcards. The

information printed on the cards are

checked and verified by Gamma

Iota's faculty advisor, Dr. Sonya

Frausto before being distributed.

In the future, each month a

counseling review session will be held by

the 3-member committee of that month,

where students can get together for 1 hour

after school and practice counseling. The

focus would be on the 6 drugs assigned for

that month, and will be a great option for

students that want to have real practice on

what they are learning. The exact dates of

these sessions will be up to the planning of

that month's committee.

If this program proves to be an

effective learning tool for the brothers of

PDC, the next step would be to provide the

rest of CNU access to this ongoing

program. PDC will pass out a sign-up

sheet to our classes where students can

provide their name and email address.

Then, once a month PDC will email them

the flashcard material for that month for

them to study, and also give them the

times of our counseling sessions for them

to participate in. This program will push

the Gamma Iota to serve both our

brothers and our fellow classmates by

promoting scholastic and professional

growth, a core value of Phi Delta Chi. As

our new brothers begin their IPPE

rotations, they will be prepared and show

the professional community that we truly

are leaders in pharmacy.

In June and July of 2011, Phi Delta Chi

conducted our first annual fireworks

booth

fundraiser. The brothers of Phi Delta

Chi took time out of their busy schedules

to help run the Phantom Fireworks

booth in

order to raise money for our

fraternity and future events. The

brothers were faced with

challenges of enduring scorching heat,

operating a large moving truck, and

lifting

numerous loads of fireworks for setting

up. The brothers persevered through

these challenges and created a great

fundraiser event that was both

successful and enjoyable.

I had a great time

assisting with the fireworks booth. I

took some great

memories from the event such as Chris

Fuller hustling to get our biggest

firework package sold and Chris Joe

rocking the sports bra tank-top while

getting dowsed with a cooler filled of ice

water. Some brothers went above and

beyond to make the fundraiser

successful such as Cindy Chen being at

the booth practically 24/7 to help out

and show everyone what to do. The girls

did a great job moving all the heavy

fireworks, while Chris Joe and I did a

superb job being eye candy with the

fireworks sign in order to attract

customers. All the

brothers who helped out at the

fireworks stand played an

integral part in the success of the

fundraiser.

Overall, the fireworks booth was a great success. The

brothers of Phi Delta Chi raised a good amount of money

for our chapter so that we can continue to grow as an

organization and thus give back to our community and

profession.

On February 14th 2012, Phi

Delta Chi held a fundraiser event

what has become to be known as

“Lord of the Wings,” which was a

five minute long all you can eat

wings competition. The winner of

this event received a cash prize,

trophy, and deemed the title “Lord

of the Wings” for the entire year.

Yes, this was held on Valentine’s

Day because what better way to

impress your date than to smother

yourself with wings and be

crowned Lord of the Wings?

This competition was so

fierce that it came down to a

lightning round between two

competitors. The two competitors,

Grant Ayvazyan and our fellow

brother Paul Gerges, tied

demolishing 38 wings a piece within

five minutes. Since there can be

only one Lord of the Wings, both

competitors came back for the

lightning round. In overtime, each

person had to eat ten more wings as

fast as they can. This came down

to the seconds as Grant Ayvazyan

swallowed his piece of chicken to

become the Lord of the Wings!

Great job to all who

competed in this event and putting

on an

exciting contest.

Overall, this wings fundraiser was a very fun and exciting event for both

the competitors and spectators. This event could not have been

successful without the help and support from the brothers, and most

importantly our sponsor Buffalo Wild Wings, who donated all the wings

for this fundraiser. We were able to raise about $200, which will go

Towards the professional and brotherhood events.

Gamma Iota held a welcome back retreat for our

brothers to get them back into the school spirit. Brothers

were invited to a beautiful day out on lake at the

Sacramento State Aquatic Center. There, brothers spent

the morning hours enjoying the warm summer sun on

their backs while kayaking down the American River.

Though we always think of our motto, Alterum Alterius

Auxilio Eget, it did not apply to the antics that

transpired during our retreat. Brothers spent most of

the morning relentlessly chasing down other brothers in

attempt to overthrow their kayaks, assault

them with the stray seaweed, and mock

those whose lack of kayaking skills may

have left them behind.

Just five minutes from setting

off the docks, Danny Chan, won the

speediest kayak flip.

Overexcitement at the freedom

provided by the kayak, high speeds

and sharp turn led to a quick disaster.

Luckily, a passing lifeguard came quickly to his

rescue and Danny was back on his kayak for more

adventures to come. Christine Oh, enjoying the

American River like a princess, personally rowed down

the river by our very own WCC, David

Pham. She didn’t even have to

lift a finger!

Our excitement increased even more when we found a

rope jump off the side of the river. Though the aquatic

center did warn us that rope jumps were illegal, but that

didn’t stop our brothers. Brothers, David Pham and Zach

Roxburgh, took turns showing off their rope jumping

skills and theatrics, attempting to outdo each other with

each round. Their wild attempts to show off made the

rope jumps seem so precarious, none of the other

brothers were willing to try it.

Fun Fun Fun!

Yosemite Retreat 2012

To start off the 2012 year, Gamma Iota held their first brotherhood retreat at Yo-

semite National Park from January 5th to the 7th. In the first night, we did our

white elephant gift exchange. It was entertaining to see everyone’s expressions as

they opened the gifts they chose. As gifts were exchange, lots of steals were made

on the popular gifts such as Marlene’s handcrafted blanket that got stolen three

times! The night progressed with the brothers showing off their vocal talents

through Singstar, as others played board games.

The following day, we explored the splendor of Yosemite. All the brothers participated in the nature hike to lower Yosemite falls. As we

reached to the bottom of the falls, some of the brothers decided to climb up the rocks of the waterfall, as some decided to stay below and enjoy

the extraordinary view of the fall. Through the support and assist of one another, many of us made it midway through the falls and saw a

magnificent panorama of Yosemite. After the hike, many of the brothers continued their recreation at the park by ice-skating in front of the as-

tounding sight of the mountains, while others headed back to the cabin to prepare dinner. Games and laughter carried on throughout the night!

The Yosemite retreat was a great time for me to bond with my brothers outside of the school setting. It was a wonderful experience for

me to get to know everyone better and a chance for me to develop my relations with others. I got to relax, go through new adventures, and cre-

ate new memories with my amazing brothers!

Before dinner event began we were invited to Alpha Psi’s

house to mingle with our neighboring chapter’s brothers.

Coming from one of PDC’s newest chapters it was amazing

to see a house full of brothers, decorated with the paddles

and awards of their chapter. Walking through there was

the perfect introduction to meeting more brothers from

UOP.

I had just crossed along with my beta class brothers

and this was our first event with UOP as brothers of Phi Delta Chi. After arriving at the venue I went straight into

mingling with the rushees. I was also able to reintroduce myself

to brothers I met while rushing at CNU. It was a bit crowded

initially with everyone in the lobby so I couldn’t move around as

much as I had wanted but I think it was a good experience giving

advice to others. It felt surreal because just a couple months ago

I was in their shoes asking for advice.

Once we began being seated I was happy to see that we got to sit

with brothers from CNU and UOP as well as rushees. It made it easy to talk with rushees and make them feel in-

vited. I had the pleasure of sitting next to a rushee named Cory. I was new to Sacramento and Cory was from Elk

Grove so it was nice to find out more about the area from a local.

During dinner there were speeches and awards given out by alumni of Alpha Psi chapter. I was impressed to see the

support and life long commitment of PDC brothers. It made me realize how important it was for us to support one

another. I can’t wait for the day when I get to see Gamma Iota with the same pride, support, and history as Alpha

Psi.

Page 34: PDC-Gamma Iota Newsletter 2011-2012

Us Brothers love to play hard just as much as we work hard. Sin City was the

perfect venue to start off our Spring Break, to spend time together, celebrate

our success in school, and mostly to just have fun. For many of us it was not

our first Vegas trip, but it was the first one we had together. The morning we

left started off a little hectic—survived through case presentations and coun-

seling practice, received multiple speeding tickets, raced through the 9 hour

drive, and flew on the economically sound (aka ghetto) AllegiantAir flight.

But when we all finally arrived and settled in, it naturally became one of the

best bonding experiences of the year and showed the depth of our Brotherhood.

Personally, I have been to Vegas plenty of times, but this particular trip I spent with my Brothers was the best I’ve ever had.

During the daytime we walked the green infested strip in celebration of St. Patty’s Day, stuffed ourselves at Wicked Spoon buffet, gambled our

money away, and threw down over $200 for Serendipity desserts. During the night we hit up XS

and Surrender nightclubs and witnessed special guest appearances from Lil’ Jon and Steve An-

gello. Many dances, talks with strangers, cabana visits, laughs and smiles later, we played

throughout the AMs, resulting in a lost cell phone, a sprained ankle, and memories never to be

forgotten (and some not even formed, haha).

The entire weekend showed the true strength of our Brotherhood. Whether it was swapping

outfits, doing each other’s makeup, tipping a bouncer to help a Brother out, sharing food, curling

each other’s hair, or walking in the cold pouring rain for an injured brother, we always had each

other’s back—AAAE seemed so innate. Most say “what happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” but

what I took away was one of the best weekends of my life that I had the honor of sharing with

amazing people I call

my brothers.

March 31, 2012 marked the success of Gamma Iota’s 2nd

Annual Brotherhood Potluck Event. Never in my life have I

devoured 40+ dishes in a matter of 30 minutes. Brothers

gathered at around 10 am at Chesapeake Commons Club

house. While we were waiting for the entire actives to arrive,

different brothers from P1-P3 classes started mingling and

exposing their watery mouths to a pre-taste of the many

delicious dishes. One GI brother who stood out was from the

Alpha Class by the name of Danny David Chan who

absconded with the food.

Once all brothers arrived, the committee leader called

Benjamin Yeung directed us into games. We started off with

Taboo and let me tell you…Chris Joe was ridiculous coming up with words. Sorry…I have to keep it G-rated to all you readers. As expected, my

team won the first of 3 games. We then moved onto Charades, followed by Human Knot. This game was the most fun because we all had to work

together to untie ourselves. Good job to the committee for saving this game as last since it definitely promoted effective communication, laughter, and critical thinking.

Again, my team was the winner. Props to Team 4.

*Drum rolls* Let your eyes, nose, and taste buds…observe, smell, and taste the wonderful dishes made by the brothers of Gamma Iota. The flavors were endless as were

the drinks. Dishes varied from Roasted Duck (thank you Kathy Phan) to Grape Leaves hailed all the way from Egypt (courtesy of Mariana Ashamalla) to even Sen-

ioritas (mucho gracias to Naleen Ha) brought over from a Filipino store in Sacramento, CA. However, one dish that caught me coming back for seconds was Gamma

Iota’s 2011-2012 WCC David Pham’s Deviled Eggs. I am not commending him because he is my Big, but I have always wanted to try these curious looking dishes. He

finally provided me with this opportunity. The paprika and mayo were in the right consistency.

I can go on and on about the many tasty dishes being offered but I have to keep you anxious. Thus, come out to our annual event next year if you are curious and would

like to know about the ethnic origin of the dishes being served or would like to know what Jenny Wong’s Guinness Corned Beef taste like. Overall, the event proved a

huge success as brothers got to converse with other brothers who were not in their class. Furthermore, the gathering was so positive that it continued onto bowling later

that night. I must say…I am definitely looking forward to next year’s potluck. Hope to see you there!!!

I recently had the privilege of planning our first annual roast for our Gamma Iota chapter. Being

a chapter in its infancy stage, we never had a roast before, so this was our chance to set up our

own traditions. After receiving input from other chapters, I set forth on this challenging, yet

rewarding adventure.

First things first, I had to find a location to accommodate all of our brothers. After scouring the

interwebs and yelp, I found a handful of locations that could possible work for us. We

eventually settled on Sheepherders as it had a convenient location and offered the best deals for

our large party. Next, my committee and I decided to do a slideshow showcasing all of the great

things we have accomplished these past few years. This was a daunting task as there are literally

thousands of pictures documenting all of the amazing things we have done. However, looking

through these pictures really brought us back together again.

As our tradition, we decided to start off things with a bang by starting off with the Phi Delta Chi

drinking song. We had a slideshow made of each P3, highlighting their ‘best’ moments in PDC.

Then as each person was roasted, we presented each P3 with a parting gift. This event was

extremely fun and emotional as this is one of our last events of the year and one of the last chances all of the brothers will be together before the P3

embark on the next stage of their academic career, rotations.

I would like to thank my committee and the help of all my brothers on helping me complete this task. All in all, I believe that this event was a great

success and I would like to wish good luck to all the P3s on their rotations. As we all move on, I hope that “…we will never once forget we’re Phi Delta

Chi!”

What is the best way to document

our year of hard work and

endless moments of bonding,

laughter, and true brotherhood?

Scrapbooking! Brothers Steven

M., Jenica L., Sasi J., Felicia N.,

Marlene T., Priya R., and I

gathered for a fun and relaxing

night at Jenica’s apartment to

give the right side of our brain a

little exercise. It was a great get

together, just being able to chit

chat and look back on the

memories of what

happened at the various events pictured. It was also a night filled with some silly

moments, as Steven tried to make a cool scrapbook page with a burnt paper effect by burning

paper

inside the apartment. Luckily, no fire-

men had to be called. The night was

long, but we were very happy to be in

each other’s company, and

especially happy when Brother

Jennifer T. showed up to help us out with

the scrapbook as well as feed all of us

with her delicious jambalaya. I cannot

wait to show everyone our final product,

and show off the Gamma Iota Chapter to nationals. Looking back to everything that we have ac-

complished, I am happy with what we have done as a brotherhood and what is in store for the

future.

This rush event was an opportunity for us to welcome the incoming first year students to the CNU family. We decided to throw a pool/BBQ party at the Reserve Pool on a beautiful Friday afternoon. The event lasted for several hours, filled with amazing food provided by the Phi Delta Chi Gamma Iota brothers, as well as fun games and water sports to entertain the potential pledges. The laid-back atmosphere allowed the brothers to mingle and get to know the incoming students. In addition, the students had the opportunity to ask questions about PDC and CNU as a whole. Many were curious to know what our fraternity is all about. From talking and observing several of the students, I had a good feeling about the new crowd and looked forward to them attending our other rush events. The students were able to see how we connected and bonded as a fraternity, which attracted them to us. I spoke to

some potential pledges about the other activities we take part in, such as community service events, fundraisers, and academic involvements. I highlighted that many of our brothers are leaders in school organizations. I wanted the new students to know that they can benefit a lot from being in our fraternity. It’s a chance for them to grow and push themselves to do more for the pharmacy field. Our first rush event was a friendly

way to break the ice and it was

definitely a success. Everyone

participated and got to know one

another. After all, we’re all in this

together, as a CNU family.

Food-A-Thon is an annual rush event created by the Gamma Iota Chapter. The basis and purpose of this event in-clude an emphasis in new inter-actions with the Potentials and the collegiate brothers. This event requires pa-tience and the ability to work in a team. During the various ac-tivities within the event, broth-ers are able to examine and bond with the Potentials. This event allows for a friendly com-petition amongst CNU students. More importantly, everyone is able to have fun while we all get to know each other. This year, teams of six were initially created based on familiarity and partly by ran-domization as well. The teams consisted of a mixture of broth-ers and Potentials. Each team

went through a series of “food games.” These food games con-sisted of flip cup, lime pong, marshmallow toss, chubby bunny, spaghetti game, and pie relay. Points were allocated to every team based on the com-pletion of the games or the strongest outcome. And, the team with the most points re-ceived the prize.

Personally, I thought this

event brought an unforgettable

rush memories. When I think of

Food-A-Thon, I think of Paul

Gerges with thirty-something

marshmallows in his mouth dur-

ing the Chubby Bunny game. I

also think of meeting amazing

potential brothers like Marlene

Taporco, Billy Nguyen, and Gian

Medina. I do not recall ever

talking to Marlene, Billy, or Gian

before the Food-A-Thon. So es-

sentially, I am grateful that this

event was created because I

got to meet fantastic poten-

tials like them!

sauce. Even though I knew the

event was planned for the fraternity,

PDC made me feel like they had

planned for my birthday all along. I

felt as if they had contacted my

parents 23 years ago and persuaded

them to conceive me, just so they

could through me a Buffalo Wild

Wings party. After leaving that

night, I was positive I had met some

truly great people. I was positive I

wanted to hang out with them again

and I was

positive I

wanted to

be PDC. I

was sold.

The

friendly

faced brothers that were strangers

that night are now some of my

closest friends in pharmacy school.

The next morning I woke up

feeling like a human punching bag

after a session with Pacquiao. I had

a pounding headache, was

dehydrated, and had stomach

contents that wanted out. The

friendly one fluid ounce gestures

from the night before had left me

ruined for morning. As I sat there in

the edge of my bed contemplating

just going back to sleep, I couldn’t

help but think, “this feeling sucks,

my bed contemplating just going

back to sleep, I couldn’t help but

think, “this feeling sucks, but it was

so worth it”. As I dragged myself into

my seat in the P1 classroom, I let my

backpack fall hit the floor because I

was too sluggish to catch it. I looked

around and saw the other bright eyed

and fresh faced students vigorously

studying the material from last night.

I then realized, in all of yesterday’s

glory, I somehow forgot to study

anything. As I sat there

with the same face a

samurai makes as he

readies for hara-kiri, I

tried to mentally

prepare for the quiz score

of zero that was my

destiny. Just as I embraced my future,

the professor tapped the mic and

announced, “due to technical

difficulties, we will only be having a

TRAT today”. I had to fight the

immediate urge to skyrocket my fist

into the air and scream, “Hell yeah!”

As if the birthday gods didn’t give me

enough fun yesterday, they followed

through and shined their light on me

again so I had no repercussions. PDC

legitimately made my 23 birthday

straight badass.

and barely knowing

event; but then I thought, “what

am I, chicken?” (ba dum tss!) The

Buffalo Wild Wings social event

was a very special one to me and I will

remember that day for the rest of my

entire life.

The event was held on September

15, 2011. I remember this date

specifically because it also just so

happened to be my birthday. I hadn’t told

anyone my birthday was approaching

because I didn’t really know anyone well

enough think they would care. That all

changed once I set foot into Buffalo Wild

Wings. From the moment I walked in,

PDC welcomed me with open arms…..

filled with shots of alcohol. They sang to

me, brought me a metric ton of shots, and

even had an ice cream Snickers cake for

me! I barely even knew any of them, but

their charisma and thoughtfulness left me

feeling like I had known them for years.

Maybe it was the Goose that had me

The warm and breezy evening of September 23, 2011 at

Morgan Creek Golf Club marked Phi Delta Chi’s showcase event of

marvel, class, emotion, and family. The second annual pharmacy

fraternity event was studded with the bright new faces of future

brothers and the veteran charm of current and alumni brothers.

Weeks of preparation culminated into Gamma Iota’s premiere

rush event. Planning began weeks before the planned dinner and

included negotiations and talks with Morgan Creek Golf Club to

accommodate the huge party. Like all preparations, there were a

few hiccups, but nothing that brotherly assistance couldn’t solve.

Guest lists, dinner orders, seating arrangements, table

centerpieces, entertainment, and decorations were assigned and

accomplished by each brother of the Gamma Iota chapter.

As master of ceremonies, I poked fun and introduced our

distinguished speakers. 2011-2012 WCC David Pham, Dr. Sonya

Frausto, Dr. Marshall Abdullah, and Alpha Psi’s Christian Ngo

and Vivian Lee showcased not only the professional opportunities

associated with the fraternity, but also the unrelenting

brotherhood that follows wherever and whenever a brother goes.

At the end of the night, I instructed all active brothers to

present roses to each of the potential brothers as an act of

sophistication, refinement, and brotherly love. The event was a

fantastic success that led to the initiation of 22 strong,

passionate, intelligent and motivated brothers to the Phi Delta Chi,

Gamma Iota chapter.

his year Phi Delta Chi

returned to Sacramento State University,

California (Sac State) for the Beta Class

Pledge Professional Event. The event was

held on October, 26, 2011 and an

impressive 22 new pledges gathered to

help the community.

Altogether, we were

able to reach

approximately 200 Sac

State students and

teach them about

cough and cold as we

approached the cough and cold season in

the midst of all the impending midterms.

We got to Sac State around 4:00 pm and

gathered in front of the library and the

students’ cafeteria. We had a table set up

for students to come up and ask about

basic information or gather

pamphlets. However, we spent the

majority of the time going out there

and reaching out to passing students.

Some of the activities the

pledges did included passing out

brochures on cough and cold, talking

to students on identifying signs and

symptoms of cough and cold, and

demonstrating preventative

measures that can be taken

during this particular season.

The Sac State students had a great

time and learned a lot about how to

approach non-pharmacological and

pharmacological therapy in treating

cough and cold. They were all given

an easy-to-read brochure on cough

and cold and each of the brothers

were able to go out there and make a

contribution on behalf of the

With a vast array of ideas ranging from car washes to bake sales we came to the decision of an auction for our Beta class pledge fundraiser. This, however, was no ordinary auction of materialistic items; we were auctioning off our time. Each pledge came up with a list of tasks they were willing to do for the highest bidder. A few of the most commons tasks included: washing cars, cooking food, cleaning house, or doing laundry. Other, more unique offers, included an hour of musical serenade, assistance in mak-ing a music video, and a video-game partner to play with. The auction started off with Jared Yoshizumi as our MC to welcome everybody and explain the basic layout of the auction. One by one, we went up to the podium as Jared introduced us with a few unique things we had listed out. The bids started off at $5 and our highest bid went up to $100. The auction lasted about an hour and a half and was filled with competing bids, laughter and a lot of fun. We were

actually surprised by how much people were willing to pay

for our time. Many different people attended our auction including students, instructors, and even individuals outside of school. We even had two faculty alumni, Dr. Frausto and Dr. West, buy our entire pledge class for some work that needed to be done on campus. My personal experience was a great one; a friend of mine came from my hometown to support our fundraiser for Phi Delta Chi and showed up moments before the auction. On my turn, the auction began and the bids went from $5 to $15 to $25 and then he bid $100! Needless to say, it was the highest bid along with another one at $100. Everybody was ecstatic to hear a high amount because it was all going towards raising money for Phi Delta Chi. Overall the auction was an

amazing experience for the entire pledge

class and all those that attended. Even

those that attended and did not win a

bid had a great deal of fun listening to

Jared get everybody pumped up and

watching the auction as the bids went

higher and higher and the friendly

competition to win increased. With a

total of 22 pledges, we raised over

$1200, which was much more than we

had anticipated. We realized that by

working together to come up with great

ideas, we can

achieve so

much more than

we thought.

The Beta’s had to plan

certain events throughout the

pledge term and one of the

events was a social event.

Since Halloween was near,

we decided to throw a

costume party for all of

the Gamma Iota Chapter.

Rachael Olsufka was

kind enough to offer

her house for the

event. A few of us

showed up early to

decorate Rachael’s house with

cobwebs, spiders, and other

Halloween décor.

To make this social event

memorable and entertaining, we

had the brothers walk through a

maze within our “Haunted

Mansion” as they entered the house.

Our elaborate scheme began with

lookouts outside (Stephanie and

Rachael) waiting and signaling to us

when our guests were arriving. As the

costume-adorned brothers walked

towards the dark house lit only by a

dim porch light, they received their

first dose of fright via a giant purple

Teletubby that jumped out from behind

a tree. Upon entering the house, the

brothers were greeted by the 3 Blind Mice

(Felicia, Dolma and Jenica) shuffling

quickly and eerily towards them with their

walking sticks. This gave our honored

guests no choice but to walk along the

hallway, where the pledges caught them

by surprise by

jumping around

the corners. As

they walked

further on, the

brothers were

greeted by me,

sitting alone in

the middle of

the kitchen, with

my hair over my

face. Because it

was so dark, the

brothers would not notice me until

I moved or tried to reach out and touch

them. Many pledges and brothers agreed

that this was the highlight of the “haunted

tour” because the screams of

terror could be heard from outside

the house. After some more

frightening detours, the brothers

were led into the garage, where a

game was awaiting them. We kept

most of the brothers entertained

with games while more brothers

arrived and experienced the same

ordeal. However, we were always

careful to keep the house quiet as

new brothers were arriving.

While this portion of the party

was definitely exciting, the rest of the

night was filled with much dancing, singing, and

even the occasional sword fight. Towards the end

of the night, the Beta class, led by Loc and Dolma,

sang to WMA Kim Che.

After weeks of strategically planning our

haunted house, I have to admit, we threw an

awesome party. We were joined by some P4’s

(Johnny and Nina) and brothers from UOP (Sally,

Christian, and Tiffany). There were many different

costumes including Freddy Krueger who kept

trying to scare Dolma, the Sun, the Devil, a

ladybug, not one but TWO penguins, the

Teletubbies, a pirate, a hobo,

Tarzan and Jane, a school boy and

school girl, and many more. Overall,

everyone had a great time and it was a

great bonding experience.

Getting the honor to be the Pledge Class President (PCP) was something that I will always cherish and remember. It was such a fun experience but more importantly I was also able to learn and grow from it. It was a position that I did not volunteer for because I was not sure if I was the right choice, or if I could even do it. I always fear letting down others and would never want to let any of my fellow pledge brothers down if they ever needed me. However, after being nominated and hearing many supportive words I felt empowered to take on this challenge. Even before pledging many of my pledge brothers had already said I should be president of our class because of my willingness to bring people together and it became a funny joke on our CNUCP Class of 2015 Facebook page. That joke later became reality when I accepted this position as president. I recall my first meeting with my WMA Tips along with my partner in crime Class Treasurer 49 Cent a couple days after that overwhelming “interesting” first night of pledging. There were a lot of things to be on top of during pledging and it felt as if I bit off more than I could chew. It seemed like a lot was going to be packed into 5 weeks and also a lot of rules to be understood during pledging. I later found out that this was much easier to do because it wasn’t just me, but it was everyone with me on this journey as well. I found out that being a PCP meant leading by example, keeping everyone informed, maintaining high morale, and not doing everything yourself but rather learning to

delegate the workload. I felt it was easy to be PCP because a number of my pledge brothers took on leadership roles and that helped ease the weight upon my shoulders. Their willingness to help one another and place their trust in me made this process easier. I felt they trusted me, believed in my words, and followed me through the process as I listened to them, represented their voice to the Brothers, and executed the ideas of the pledge class so that we could all achieve our goals of becoming a part of the Greatest Professional Fraternity, Phi Delta Chi! My goal was to make sure we all completed this journey together and form lasting bonds that would truly show the meaning of Brotherhood. I am glad to say that I KNOW this was accomplished. From this experience, I’ve learned that I am a natural leader. I have no problems voicing my opinion or listening to the idea of others. I believe in collaborating on projects and using the power of multiple brains to obtain the most potential out of each idea. I feel I have been able to fine tune these abilities through this wonderful experience. What has also made me even more humble is hearing from my fellow pledge brothers that they appreciated my effort and recognized the sacrifices I made. Receiving the honor of Most

Valuable Pledge is something I am honestly, extremely proud of. It hangs on my wall right next to my bed so that I can look at it anytime and understand what I am capable of and the leadership qualities I possess. I’d like to say that I thought MVP should not have gone to me because I felt it was my duty as the PCP to do the things that I did but am still grateful for the award. Lastly, I’d like to say I am really proud of the nickname I have been given. The meaning behind Kamikaze is so special and I love letting everyone know what my name is (but not why I was named it). Others will never know but I will know it is because of the pas-sion I have for my brothers. Beta Class is LEGIT! Thank you for choosing me to be your Pledge Class President!

If you had asked me this ques-tion a few months ago, I probably would have stumbled for a while be-fore answering. Maybe it was the five weeks of pledging, the three all-nighters, or the countless tests and projects that made me seriously ques-tion my decision of joining a frater-nity. However, when the dust finally settled and I had time to take a deep breath, I began to really think about my choice. Now, I can honestly say, I chose Phi Delta Chi for the people in it and the impact they have made in my life.

The members of PDC were some of the first people I met at phar-macy school. I was surprised to dis-cover that a handful of students at the professional level weren’t completely lame. These guys and girls were some of the smartest, funniest, and wildest individuals I had met in a long time. In a matter of a couple of weeks, I had gone rafting down the American River, partied at every club in Downtown Sac-ramento, and drank far more alcohol than any person of my size should con-sume. Eventually, all of these crazy events aside, I began to develop deep

“I was surprised to discover that a handful of students at the professional level weren’t completely lame.”

AY, WH

DID YOU CHOOSE

?

friendships for the Brothers in this fraternity. It was this fact that made the next part of the story all the more surprising.

Throughout this time, I had been attending other fraternities’ events and meeting their members as well. In the beginning many of

he events seemed to be fun, the peo-ple appeared to be nice and their views on brotherhood, loyalty, and honesty seemed to be rock-solid. One fraternity was so convincing in fact, that I made it all the way to its pinning ceremony before I realized I had made the wrong choice. I quickly corrected this mistake by apologizing repeatedly and running out of the building to see the people I really wanted to be with.

To this day, I am still suffering the consequences of that night; I’ve

lost friends, professors’ re-spect, and maybe even a little pro-fessional integrity. However, no matter how much I may have lost, I have gained so much more in the friendships I made with my new Brothers. Through all of the drama, the members of Phi Delta Chi stood

by my side, even taking some of the punishment for me. In the end, these individuals are the reason I chose Phi Delta Chi.

When I was a junior in college, I

found myself one night cuddling up

with a hottie I had been talking to

for the last week or so. We were

laying down on her couch watching

tv. After a little while I thought to

myself, “Hey, I’ll bet she’d be down

to make out with me, why else would

she invite me over to “watch tv”. So

I muster up the courage and go for

it. I raise my head from the couch

and turn her head toward mine.

There we were, eye’s locked and

arms embracing each other, and legs

tangled in a unified web. The lights

were dim and everything just felt so

right. Her lips were so full, her smile

so seductive. The chemistry in the

air was only equaled by the passion in

her face. The moment was right. The

moment was now.

I leaned in to kiss her slowly,

watching her gracefully look up at

me with eager anticipation. She

closes her eyes as she lifts her neck

to meet my kiss halfway. Then all of

the sudden, BAM, I get a bloody

nose that drips right onto her face.

Oh yes, a bit made it into her mouth

too. I immediately retract, cover my

scream, or yell. She simply grabs a

Kleenex, gives it to me and starts

laughing.

One time during my trip to

good idea. Little did I know, I was on

this journey to visit this friend be-

cause they had a deep interest in I.

When I arrived I discovered an open

coffin in the living room. Apparently

this friend’s mother has passed away

and they had a viewing in this very

room. They greeted me warmly and let

us sit down in the sofa next to the

coffin. As it turns out, this friend of

my cousin is male and happened to be

he got really close and started to hit

on me. So to my left I had this guy’s

dead mother while on my right I had

this guy who is getting all up in my grill

trying to put his arm on the back of

not. While extremely awkward I tried

She said he saw my picture and just
