Over 150 active Gamma Iota Sigma members were registered from 19 Chapters and 70 indus- try and Corporate Spon- sors attend representing 30 companies. The Grand Chapter would like to congratu- late all of our Chapter Award Winners and Indi- vidual Scholarship Win- ners. See pages 4 and 5 for photos! Over 150 active Gamma Iota Sigma members were registered from 19

Chapters and 70 indus-try and Corporate Spon-sors attend representing

Howard University

Doug is a senior at Virginia Commonwealth University and is major-ing in Finance, Risk Management and Insur-ance. He has maintained a 3.77 GPA and been a mem-ber of the Dean’s List in every semester he has at-tended college. Doug is a stu-dent member of RIMS, PLUS and NAIW and is the current Alpha Mu Chapter President. He is also the only student serving as a District Di-rector for the Chapter

Conservation Committee.

Doug has been active

in his studies outside of VCU by obtaining three professional designa-tions. His local CPCU chapter sponsored him

to attend insur-ance classes where he earned the Certificate in General Insur-ance, the Asso-ciate in Insur-ance Services, and the Associ-ate in Surplus

Lines Insurance. Doug is currently enrolled in the Associate in Com-mercial Underwriting program that he hopes to

complete by May 2007.

Doug was awarded one of the 2006 John T. Lockton Memorial Schol-

arships by the Spencer Foundation and received a Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation Scholarship. He has completed two internships, one in GEICO’s Management Internship Program, and the second as an Under-writing Intern for the Colony Group. Doug has been selected to be the first Spencer Intern in the VCU Risk Manage-ment Department in the spring of 2007 and is the newest recipient of the Alan C. Williams Leader-ship Award from Gamma

Iota Sigma.

The Grand Chapter would like to welcome 4 new members to the Board of Trustees

KAREN FLEMING is the retired Risk Manager for Verizon Commu-nications Inc. in Falls Church, Virginia (1987-2006). She is a graduate of SUNY, Genesco, NY. She is a CPCU, ARM, Certified Toastmaster, a member of RIMS Student Involvement Committee, and served on the RIMS Executive Council. From 1982 to 1987 she was Risk Manager for Arlington County Government, Arlington, Virginia. Most recent student in-volvement has been with the Al-pha Mu Chapter at VCU.

MELISSA OGG is a December 2003 Graduate of Temple Univer-sity where she served as Secretary of Sigma Chapter. An Actuarial Science major, she is employed in HR Services as a Health and Wel-fare Consultant by Towers Perrin in Philadelphia. Her current job responsibilities include client rela-tionship management, H&W bid-ding management, and project management.

RUPAL PATEL is a 2004 Gradu-ate of Penn State University where she served as Treasurer of Alpha Beta Chapter. An Actuarial Sci-ence major, she is employed as a Client Representative/Risk Ana-

lyst by Marsh in Washington, D.C. Her position contemplates travel.

PAIGE SHIPP is a 2005 Graduate of Middle Tennessee State Univer-sity where she served as President of the Omega Chapter. A Fi-nance/Insurance major, she is employed by Liberty Mutual as a Liberty Global Associate Under-writer. Her duties involve travel. While a student at MTSU she re-ceived multiple scholarships, in-teracted with many professional societies, and was significantly involved in charitable/public ser-vice activities.

On September 6th, we held our first chapter meeting of the semester. The officers introduced themselves and their positions and the new members also introduced themselves and their majors. The officers and our advisor, Dr. Miles, gave a brief summary of the benefits of joining Gamma Iota Sigma and emphasized the fact that it was not limited to or beneficial to only Actuarial Science majors. Our President, Zack Erickson, and Treasurer, Betsy Peters, discussed their summer in-ternships at Jackson National Life. Finally, a brief overview of the conference was discussed and forms were handed out. The banner was displayed.

On September 18th, we had Nicki Acker from our Career Services department as a special guest speaker. She discussed the importance of a good resume and a personalized cover letter. Exam-ples of different resumes and cover letters were distributed to the members and a few sections were explained in detail. She also advertised the services that Career Services offer, such as re-sume critique, e-recruiting, and mock interviews. After her speech, the members that were attend-ing the conference has a discussion of the details of the trip such as transportation and timing. The banner was displayed.

During February, Sigma Chapter hosted presentations by Distinguished Guest Lecturers, William Ryan, Senior Director of Marketing Strategy and Communications of St. Paul Travelers, Craig

Gortner, Director of National Account Surety of Liberty Mutual, Bruce C. Belzak, Managing Di-rector and National Practice Leader in Life Sciences of Marsh. The speakers lectured about various top-

ics ranging from daily risks, their experiences in the industry, and many other industry issues.

On September 14, Sigma Chapter hosted its Sixth Annual Golf Outing at Pine Crest Country Club in Lansdale, PA. Eighteenth foursomes consisting of industry representatives, alumni, and stu-dents competed. Prizes were offered for anyone who hit a hole in one on any one of three holes. Although no one won, these prizes ranged from a Chrysler 300 sedan to round trip domes-tic airline tickets. Prizes were awarded to the first and second place teams. Additionally, prizes were given to the golfer who had the longest drive and the golfers who were closest to the pin on selected holes. A dinner reception followed the competition where a raffle was held and door prizes were given away. The event was an enormous success.

On September 20, Sigma Chapter sponsored its Semi-Annual Gamma Games. The participants each received a t-shirt and were divided randomly into eight color coded teams. The games in-cluded Tug of War, Bat Spin, and an unforgettable Dodge Ball final. The purple team triumphed over the other teams and an engraved plaque with their picture will be hung in the hallway of the Risk Management and Insurance Department. Everyone who attended had a great time and en-joyed to opportunity to get better acquainted with one another.

On September 22, 2006, Alumni Ahmad Zieter and Paul Mueler, spoke to Gamma about Citizens Insurance Company and the opportunities they have to offer.

On September 27, 2006, Josh Hart and 13 other members attended a focus group discussion with Michigan Insurance Company.

On September 27, 2006, 43 Alpha Alpha members participated in the annual Fall Service Day throughout Olivet College cleaning up the campus grounds.

On September 29, 2006, 15 Alpha Alpha members helped run the annual Golf Outing Fundraiser at Forest Akers Golf Course in East Lansing, MI. There were 24 Alumni Present .

In the Fall 2006, Members Craig Carpenter, James Lile, and John Johnson are member of the global facebook for Gamma Iota Signma.

On September 23, 2006, Members of the Alpha Alpha Chapter, participated in the Hastings Mu-tual Insurance Thronapple River Clean-Up.

On Wednesday September 13, 2006 we welcomed back our returning members and met new members at our first meeting. We discussed upcoming events and provided an overview of the or-ganization to new members. Also on this day was the Networking Night for Accounting and Fi-nance majors as well as RMI minors. Students had the opportunity to make contacts with various companies such as International Fidelity, CIGNA, and Vanguard to name a few. On September 21, 2006 four students and a faculty advisor attended the CPCU Society Breakfast, “From the Top,” featuring two insurance company executives.

On September 23, 2006, seven GIS members participated in a Heartwalk to raise money for heart disease. Two members of Gamma were quoted in the local newspaper. This was a community ser-vice event. Gamma Iota Sigma banner was displayed.

On September 28, 2006, twenty-five GIS members participated in the Insurance Octoberfest Golf Outing at the Terre Haute Country Club. This was a fundraising event that also allowed members to interact with many alumni and industry representatives.

On September 5, 2006, the CPCU Charter Expo was held. This was an informal time and cocktail reception in which member were given the opportunity to learn more about the CPCU Society and the exam process plus the CPCU mentoring program while networking with industry professionals during the social hour.

On September 6, 2006, State Farm hosted an informative internship meeting. Topics discussed at the meeting were information about the company, summer and rotational internships, full time jobs, interviewing tips, and resume advice. It was a great way for GIS members to network with industry professionals as well as find out more about available opportunities.

On September 8, 2006, the Katie School Alumni Golf Outing was held in which many former Gamma Iota Sigma members were present. There was a lunch served prior to a round of golf. The banner was displayed.

On September 12, 2006, a RIMS Meeting was held. There was a lunch and guest speaker that gave GIS member the opportunity to learn about current issues in the industry.

On September 14, 2006, Laura Diss gave a presentation on the importance of life insurance. She attends Wellesley College and is the recipient of the LIFE Foundation Scholarship. The banner was displayed, 30 members were present.

On September 15, 2006, the Katie School Alumni Cubs Game was held in which many former Gamma Iota Sigma members were present. The banner was displayed.

On September 18, 2006, Kelly Nichols from Amica Insurance conducted on-campus mock inter-views. GIS members were given priority. This was a great oppurtunity for members to improve their interviewing skills.

On September 19, 2006, the Illinois State Fall Employment and Internship Fair was held. This

event gave numerous members the chance to talk to company representatives from all over the country, find out more about available jobs and internships, pass out their individual resumes to employers, and set up interviews for potential jobs.

On September 21, 2006, six GIS members gave presentations in Chicago regaurding their inter-national insurance internship granted to them by the Katie School of Insurance. Their presenta-tion was to the Katie School board which consists of top executives from several different insur-ance companies that provide the funding to make these internships possible.

On September 27, 2006, an officer meeting was held. Topics reviewed were the duties of each of-ficer, past events, upcoming events, updates on the committees, fundraising and volunteer efforts. We also discussed the upcoming management conference. 9 officers attended.

On September 29, 2006, several GIS members traveled to Chicago to visit Aurthur J. Gallagher and Zurich Financial Services. The visits consisted of tours and informative meetings about avail-able internships and jobs. Both companies gave us a great overview of their Associate Programs. It was a great way for GIS members to find out more about a specific company and hear from their current employees.

Sept 6th Members and officers attended the Finance, Insurance, and Real Estate Department information session. Doug Rogers and Debbi Little spoke on behalf of GIS.

Sept 7th Tim Capel (VP) and Debbi Little, both Alpha Mu alumni, attended the RIMS Chapter monthly meeting.

Sept 13th Held a members meeting with guest speaker, Jeff Wrobel President of the Richmond CPCU Chapter. Alumni Tim Capel and Debbi Little were in attendance. The banner was displayed.

Sep 14th Doug Rogers was awarded the Derek Hughes/NAPSLO Educational Foundation Scholarship for 2006-2007.

Sept 15-16 Doug Rogers (President) attended the annual state NAIW meeting and received the 2006 state scholarship.

Sept 20th Alpha Mu Chapter sponsored the 1st Annual School of Business Student Activity Fair. Alumni Marton Ott, Tim Capel, and Debbi Little were in attendance. The banner was displayed.

Sept 23rd Tim Capel and Doug Rogers met with their Spencer Mentor, Alicia Junta from Hoff-man-LaRoche Inc. as part of their scholarship award.

Sept 27th Co-hosted the first on campus industry reception with the Richmond Chapter of CPCU. Alumni Marton Ott, Jill Halverson, Rosalyn, Tim Capel, and Debbi Little were in attendance. The banner was displayed.

Sept 30th Officer’s planning meeting for October was held at Buffalo Wild Wings followed by a football social.

All of Sept Officer/Advisor meetings are held once per week with the VP and Treasurer and twice per week with the President and VP of Promotions and Recruiting. The banner was displayed.

On September 19th, the Alpha Nu Chapter conducted a General Body meeting. The following top-ics were covered in the meeting: finding new officers for PR/recruitment, Fundraising, and Profes-sional Events, sending an email out to all actuarial students informing them of Gamma Iota Sigma, setting up an Insurance Panel for a Q&A session, as well as a discussion of the presidential conference attended this summer.

On September 25th, the Alpha Nu Chapter sponsored an Insurance Q & A session. The panel con-sisted of a student with an actuarial internship at Progressive, a student with a marketing intern-ship at State Farm, a financial advisor and the CEO of Cedarbrook Financial, an insurance profes-sor, as well as our faculty advisor. Members and non-members attended totaling 22. Brochures and flyers were passed out.

On October 5th, the Alpha Pi chapter held a General Body meeting. Tom Chase, CEO of Insurors Of Texas was the speaker. Mr. Chase discussed the various jobs offered in the Insurance industry. Mr. Chase also discussed surety bonds, which is his company’s specialty. The banner was dis-played

On September 17-19 the Alpha Pi President and Vice President attend the Houston Marine Insur-ance Seminar. They attended two days of discussion by Marine Industry leaders.

On September 26th the Alpha Pi chapter President and Vice President and 5 members attended the Baylor University career fair. Contacts were made with Travelers Insurance, State Farm, Insu-rors of Texas, Farmers Insurance and American First Insurance Company. Alpha Pi will use this contacts for sources of speakers for general meetings in the upcoming months.

Summary of Programs Held

President Stephanie Kulich and Vice President Angela Gillespie designed new membership application forms and an introductory Power Point presentation for all new members visiting Alpha Rho for the first time.

September 26, 2006 during our regularly scheduled meeting the Chapter hosted a pizza luncheon for all Business – Insurance students. This was a chance for the students to meet and mingle with other insurance students as well as members of the fraternity. The Business & Management Division of Fanshawe College has agreed to donate funds to offset the cost of the luncheon. Stephanie and Angela did a presentation about the fraternity and its history at Fanshawe College.

The Chapter will be publishing a resume book again this year. Workshops for developing your resume will be held throughout the year during our regularly scheduled meetings. Members are encouraged to being working on their resume now.

On September 27, 2006 VP of Alumni/Industry Relations John Podolinsky attended the London Insurance Brokers Association luncheon as the representative for the Alpha Rho Chapter. After lunch there was a presentation by John Skanes of Economical In-surance on Auto Theft Claims. John will outline the information he learned at the seminar in our next general meeting. The Alpha Rho chapter is an associate member of the London Insurance Brokers Association.

On September 5th, the Alpha Tau chapter conducted a general body meeting. Students partici-pated in a Career Development Seminar. The college career center attended, and provided infor-mation on how students were to access the career center website and apply for interviews.

On September 21st, the Alpha Tau chapter, along with industry professionals, sponsored a Shadow Day. Students spent the day with their sponsor in the field learning about the sponsors job and other jobs in the industry. Students and sponsored attended a dinner reception where they were encouraged to network with the companies in attendance. Students also heard a speaker comment on the importance of obtaining a CPCU designation.

On September 26th, the Alpha Tau chapter conducted a general body meeting. Students heard 3 industry professionals speak on the importance of resume critiquing, how to conduct a first inter-view, and the interviewing process. The represented companies were The Hartford, Hinrich-Flanagan Financial, and BB&T.

9-7-06 General Meeting. The chapter officer's introduced a point system to the members. We also had a guest speaker from State Farm, Mr. Robert Lorimer. Mr. Lorimer discussed his ca-reer at State Farm and introduced some facts about the company itself.

9-21-06 General Meeting. The chapter officers reminded members about the deadline for dues and resumes for the resume book. There was a guest speaker from American Management Corporation, Statler Strange. He is the marketing manager for AMCS, which is a division of AMC. He discussed how AMC does business and also about career opportunities with AMC.

On October 3rd, 2006, Alpha Omega Chapter held their induction and chartering ceremony. Temple’s Executive Officers were in Attendance as well and Dr. Williams from the Grand Chapter and Temple’s Faculty Advisor, Dr. Drennan. Also in attendance were industry profes-sionals from Wills Re, Philadelphia Insurance Companies, Commerce Insurance Services and other various executives.
