To say goodbye. . .In the six years Barbara has been in the

Lower School, she has become an integral part of the entire PCDS community. It is hard to imagine the Lower School without her. Barbara’s exuberance and positive attitude have had an impact on everyone who has had the privilege of working with her. She has been a great leader, educator, mentor, and friend whom we will all miss dearly. Her influence on PCDS will be felt for many years after her departure. We know she will be thinking of us as often as we will be thinking of her. To say goodbye, we would like to tell you, Barbara, that you epitomize the following inspirational quote b f Charles Swindoll: “Encourage one another. Many times a word of praise or thanks or appreciation or cheer has kept people on their feet.”

Thank you for your support, encourage- ■ ment, and wisdom.

Dr. Egon Spengler: I blame myself.Dr. Peter Venkman: So do I.Dr. Raymond Stantz: Well, no sense in worrying about it now.Dr. Peter Venkman: Why worry? Each one o f us is carrying an unlicensed nuclear accelerator on his back.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not condoning fascism, or any-ism for that matter. -Ism's in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an -ism, he should only believe in himself. Now looking back on all the days gone by I sit and wonder what it’d be like i f I never went * away would I see the world the way I do the memories that brought me to this place that I now call my home today. "You were supposed to come in Saturday! What were you doing?" “Michael, I did nothing. I did absolutely ] nothing, and it was everything I thoughtj it could be."

I know just who I am, and what’s in my head is that I don't really give a d * * * just who you think I am, it's who I am.

-Less Than Jake

I am not going to sit on my butt as the events that affect me unfold to determine the course o f my life. I'm going to take a stand. I’m going to defend it. Right or wrong, I'm going to defend it.

“Ever since I started working, every single day o f my life has been worse than the day before it. So that means that every single day that you see me, that's on the worst day o f my life."“What about today? Is today the worst day o f your life?”"Yeah.”“Wow, that’s messed up."

The senior class of 2004 dedicates this yearbook to you, Mrs. Barranco. We were the last class to have the honor of your guidance through Civilization I, and we can only feel sorry for those who may never be “scholars” of the Barranco variety. Your warmth, compassion, spirit, and sense of humor drove us to succeed in and survive freshman year; your excitement about learning and devotion to your students continued to inspire us in American Government and Russian History Through Literature. From the exploits of Roman emperors to the policies of current presidential candidates, the knowledge you have imparted has helped us understand the world at large. Your passion for what you were teaching has always been obvious, but your own strong opinions never interfered with your encouragement for us to form our own thoughts. But most importantly, you have taught us to remain true to ourselves while respecting others. You have shown us—with an open heart and sincere smile—that a teacher can also be a true friend. We will miss you in the years after we leave PCDS.

Thank you for all you have done for us.

Get off his property, you meddling kids! • • • Morris Chan: Morris was last seen striding confidently in the direction of.. .well, no one is exactly sure where Morris was going. But he was going with p purpose. • • • Peter Curzon: To no one’s surprise, Twinkles ends up in the Ice Capades.. .as the official Zamboni Operational Engineer. Her career hit a snag, however, when the WNBA’s newly-pased minimum height rules prevented her from going pro. Creating a book of any magnitude is a tremendous accomplishment and a yearbook is no exception. It’s a labor of love (most days) for those who toil days, nights, and weekends with the sole goal to create the most pleasing, attractive and informative

record of the past year at Phoenix Country Day School. For those who have served so diligently this year, I have nothing but admiration for and gratitude to you: the results have been wonderful and my experience with you has been delightful.

I would first like to recognize Madame Editor Elena V. Abarinov. A more tireless worker or one stronger in her convictions does not likely exist. She has supplied her vision, guidance, good humor, and hard work to make The 2004 Phoenician what it is. Many thanks, Elena.

The “Dynamic Duo” of Assistant Editors, Daniel Scarpace and Toby Seadler were superb in their performance and stalwart in being here when it counted. Thank you for your good cheer and even better loyalty to the yearbook. Photo Editor Kerry Person managed an impossible job and always with a smile. Special thanks to Caroline Daucher for her sterling work as Captions Queen (and Time Warp Specialist, 1st Class). Kudos! Other students also gave of themselves when it counted and deserve special credit as well: Scott Carlson, Jessie Baum, Kiera Dillard, Ruchika Gupta, and Cassie Sonntag. For photo support above and beyond the call of duty, special thanks to our own Communications Office (Joan Risley and Debra Kolbet), Ryan Gibbons (and his coffee-flavored humor), Lee Silverthorn (great endsheets, Lee!) who always seem to be there when you need them—and often before you realize it!

To the patient parents who allowed these students to spend hours and days in the Lab—and then provided transportation: my heartfelt thanks.

To the faculty and staff of all three PCDS divisions, your support and assistance were invaluable in shooting needed pictures, identifying those cherubic faces, and generally helping the whole process along.

To Nancy Krase, photographer extraordinaire: we couldn’t have done it without you. The quality of so many of these images is due to your professional expertise and incredible willingness to be there to serve the PCDS community.

To Ali Vritska and Terri Schnell of Herff-Jones, many, many thanks. Your warm support carried us through (and past) many deadlines. This book is a result of your hard work, as much as ours.

And finally, to Geoff Campbell, Head of the Upper School: you have been so kind to and supportive of the Yearbook staff this year—we thank you. And it should not be forgotten that you were the original captain that set this ship off on its deep water this year. We reached port safely!

Andrew Reese

“When I grow up,” I tell Miss Rumphius, “I too will go to faraway places and comehome to live by the sea.”

“That is all very well, little Alice,” says my aunt, “but there is a third thing you must do.”“What is that?” I ask.

“You must do something to make the world more beautiful.”“All right,” I say.

But I do not know yet what that can be.Miss Rumphius, Barbara Cooney. 1982
