PCC Day One for RDA Authority Records

March 31, 2013

After this date, all new records entering the LC/NACO Authority File will be constructed according to RDA.

RDA NACO Training

• Training materials are freely available: http://www.loc.gov/catworkshop/courses/rda_naco/index.html

• Underway now

• Self-paced; combination of techniques

RDA Policy Decisions for Authority Records

• 21 separate detailed decisions• Conference headings – two kinds

• Collective conference authority records• Individual conference authority records

• New MARC Authority fields (e.g., 046, 37x)• Reciprocal 5xx fields, using terms from RDA Appendix

J & K• Definitions for Fields 670 and 675 adjusted

Transitioning the LC/NACO Authority File

• 95.1% (7,631,000 records) headings would be formulated the same as AACR2

• 2.8% (225,000 records) headings need human intervention

• 2.1% (172,000 records) headings need machine updating

Automated changes coming to 5% of the LC/NACO Authority File

Phase 1: 667 fields added to records whose 1xx cannot be used under RDA (and will require manual review)

Will start when testing is done

Phase 2: Make RDA-related changes to access fields (automated changes)

Start in March 2013

• Single consolidated set of statements

• Standing Committee on Standards will represent PCC

• Use leading and trailing hyphens with birth and death dates

• Word transcription may follow either Appendix A or capitalization found in the resource

• Ordinal numerals will be recorded following usage
