to health services through community health program. VIN has different projects under the children

development programme such as Children’s Clubs (CC), Early Childhood Development (ECD) School

Attendance Project (Teacher Development, Parenting Education, School Infrastructure Development, Child

Sponsorship) and Child Care at Orphanage.

Even in the recent days in Nepal, schools are focusing on examination and are doing less for developing the

creativity of the students. The teachers only focus on reading and writing – rote learning. The creativity of

children is not explored. Due to the busy work schedule of parents, most of the children do not have the

opportunity to be socialized and creative. To provide opportunity to children (aged 6-12 years old) for

socialization & creativity, such type of camps is very essential.

At VIN working area, children don’t have the proper structure and environment at home and school to

develop their innate talents. Children's camp (at winter and summer breaks) is one of the best places to

explore their innate talents and creativity. In this workcamp, national & international volunteers will

facilitate different types of fun and creative activities for the target children where VIN works.

Objectives:

To provide unique opportunity for overall development (social, emotional, physical, mental, creativity)&

provide fun-time for children aged 6-12 utilizing their vacation period.

To promote the friendship, understanding and solidarity among local young volunteers and cross-national

volunteers.

To provide opportunity to understand and appreciate the Nepalese culture and tradition or cultural

immersion.

Work / Activities: The volunteers will conduct children's camp to promote their innate talents& creativity

for their overall development such as physical, mental, social & emotional.

During children camp volunteers can prepare sessions and take classes on following topics: Physical

exercises, Team Building, Drawing, coloring & painting, Art, Craft & Origami, Singing and dancing, Drama,

Music, and Hiking, Teaching language and so on.

Placement Support Process: Each volunteer is greeted and received by VIN local staff from the airport and

dropped to local host family. The first day is the arrival day. The second day volunteers will receive a full day

orientation at VIN office in Kathmandu. The placement orientation will cover cultural tips, survival phrases

on Nepali language, health tips, preparation for project activities and an introduction to VIN. Then actual

workcamp starts on from the third day. You will always be guided by a Nepali camp leader and VIN

supervisors will visit you time to time for follow up support. Should you have any concerns on the workcamp,

you may always call us for immediate help. During or after the workcamp, our staff will take you on a half

Background/Project:

After the devastating earthquake of 25th April, 2015, the situation in Nepal is desperate! Over 8500

deaths, thousands of people injured. Over 600 hundred thousand houses were destroyed. 1.7million

children are directly affected and need urgent support. Over 125,000 pregnant women affected.

The communities, VIN has been working in, Jitpurphedi and Okharpauwa, are badly affected. Almost

90% houses are destroyed. Jitpurphedi and Okharpauwa alone have witnessed 22 deaths and over 3

dozen injured! The water supply is damaged and destroyed. Some water sources became dry and

some badly destroyed. Most of the people have been using water from the natural and direct sources

and because of the open defecation practices, the water is totally contaminated, and this has made

community people especially children, suffer from diarrhoeal and many other diseases. The land filled

site of Okharpawa is another reason for suffering people from different diseases. Because of their low

economic status and lack of awareness, they are not able to construct toilets themselves. VIN had

already constructed 550+ transitional homes for the needy earthquake victims in those communities.

They have simple shelter to live but no toilet. VIN aims to construct minimum 500 toilets for the needy

and poor families.

Objectives: To construct toilets for earthquake victims, back warded marginalized and

indigenous groups to declare open Defecation Free (ODF) communities.

To help people increase correct health and hygiene practices including washing their hands

with soap water through aware raising campaign and trainings.

Background/Project: VIN has been working for the welfare of the people of marginalized communities. VIN

has implemented its holistic approach and focuses for women and children to achieve its goal. VIN aims to

empower the children of those communities through educational programs and training. VIN is supporting

local public schools with the help of volunteers involved in construction and maintenance, teaching English

and sharing their skills. The schools lack basic infrastructure. The walls of the class rooms are not painted or

decorated. The land around the school is not protected well. It is barren and, due to the lack of the trees,

landslides occur frequently during the rainy season.

The teaching method in Nepal is mostly based on the ‘talk and chalk’ system. VIN, in partnership with the

District Education Office (DEO), and some international organizations have been providing different types

its beauty. The workcamp volunteers will be involved in producing a colourful and fun learning environment

for the children by creating alphabets, numbers, pictures of animals, birds, body parts and so on. The kind

of schedule and the focus of the project will be adapted to the season, the possibilities and the needs of the

moment, to improve the achievements in a long-term view.

To paint the wall, class rooms and fence of school compound, to make the ground plain, to make garden

around school area, educate the children to build a better and more conscious society.

To promote friendship, understanding and solidarity among local people and international volunteers.

Work: Fence, classrooms and wall painting and decoration, Gardening, Clear the ground.

Background/Project: Many parts of the communities are destroyed to dust and many lives lost their houses and properties in this

earthquake. This massive earthquake not only left people poor but many people are now homeless and living

in very cold and small temporary shelters. This tragic moment made VIN realize that reconstruction of

houses of poor families, public properties, religious temples, and cultural heritage sites would be one of the

best ideas to support the community people.

After the devastating earthquake of 25th April, 2015, the situation in Nepal is desperate! VIN has been

continuously involved in the Relief work dividing its relief into three phases; Rapid response / Rescue,

Rehabilitation, Reconstruction & Sustainability.

VIN already completed two phases and we are now in Reconstruction & Sustainability phase. This

is our long term phase. We will be working until the reconstruction completes in our earthquake

affected communities. This includes education to families on WASH and construct toilets to them,

Rebuilding Earthquake Resistant Infrastructure (RERI) , Earthquake Resistant Home Construction

Education(REECH) and Entrepreneurship Building.

Objectives:

To construct safe homes/toilets to the earthquake victims of the communities

To educate on safe earthquake resistance houses/schools.

To restore the cultural and religious sites and help to rebuild the nation

To raise awareness and provide training on correct health and hygiene practices, to manage the

waste of the community.

To renovate, reconstruct and improve the irrigation channel, drinking water supply, roads, schools,

houses or any public or private properties.

To promote the friendship, understanding and solidarity among local young volunteers and cross-national volunteers.

To provide opportunity to understand and appreciate the Nepalese culture and tradition or cultural immersion.

Background/Project: Nepal is a beautiful mountainous country. More than 80 % of the population live in

rural areas with over 35% of the population living below the poverty line. Access to proper health and

sanitation facilities is often very limited and awareness of correct hygiene practices is low. Only 46% of the

population has access to toilets, leaving 54% to practice open-air defecation.

Due to lack of awareness, the community site has to deal with environmental problems such as water

pollution, air pollution, noise pollution, solid waste management, open deification etc. Recognising these

concerns, VIN organises camps to address these environmental and educational issues. It focuses on

Workcamps/ short-term projects which include environmental protection, tree planting, working along with

local partners and community people to spread health and hygiene awareness among the community

people. The work will vary largely in the camps and will include some simple physical work.

The implementation of the Total Sanitation Project is expected to generate a significant improvement in

the health and sanitation conditions of the community and protect the environment as a reduction in the

occurrence of sickness within the community and an improved quality of life.

Our aim through this project is to construct toilets, create awareness among the people and to give them

more instruments to feel confident and feel free to decide for their future, and for the future of a new

generation. VIN cooperates with several local partners in assisting various government schools by creating

Background/Project: A park is a beautiful thing, which entertains us if we visit there. A public park is

necessary in a city like Kathmandu because people come to take fresh air from the crowded and smokeful

area. In Kathmandu, the houses stand side by side. There is not enough open space in many houses. The

alleys are very narrow. People want free air and light.

People in this fast-paced city life often prefer outdoor recreational pursuits during weekends and holidays.

But, what if the visit to parks and other recreational spots becomes an unpleasant experience?

Such is the condition of the famous parks in Kathmandu as they are now in dilapidated condition, which are

barely luring the townies.

The sorry state of affairs persists as the authority concerned — the Kathmandu Metropolitan City (KMC) has

not been able to look after such sites due to the lack of proper mechanism and manpower.

For the people of Kathmandu, green and well-maintained parks where families can spend quality time

together on holidays have always been a distant dream.

It is not that there aren´t parks in the capital at all. The city boasts of spacious parks like Ratna Park, Balaju

Park, Tribhuwan Park, Gagadol Park and Sankha Park etc. But, those parks and others are in a sorry state.

Families prefer not to visit the parks as they are usually littered with wastes and have turned into hangouts

for drifters. Most of the parks in the capital lack basic facilities like toilets and water taps. Even those that

have toilets such facilities have been left to fall apart in want of upkeep.

Now days, the parks are being polluted. People visit the place, throw papers, break flowers and destroy the beauty. In some parks, mazes are burnt and sold but they throw jackets of maize and cobs. The husks of fruits are thrown here and there.

Objectives:

Educate the people to make them more responsible with nature.

Educate the people regarding the property like public parks/garden: don’t throw rubbish everywhere, save

plants (Garden means plants, plants mean water and water means life).

Collect the rubbish and clean the park.

Plant and care the trees and flowers.

Develop a green collect point to collect all bio-degradable rubbishes and make bio compost to use for the

plants in the park.

Work / Activities:

Develop different materials like poster, placard and other materials and provide education to the people

about the parks.

Collect the rubbish and clean the park, paint and decorate it.

Plant and care the trees and flowers.

Help develop bio compost in the park and use it for the plants.

plan of Nepal has mentioned the age group of 15-29 and, recently, National Youth policy has considered

youth as the age group of people between 16-40 years of age. According to this National Youth Policy all

Nepali citizens aging 16-40 years shall be treated as youth.

In Nepal, youths constitutes 38 percent of the total population of Nepal. More than 3 million youths are

working as migrant workers in countries except India. The number of migrant Nepalese working in India is

even larger. The reasons behind migration are almost same in Nepal as in other parts of the world. Poverty,

limited employment opportunities, deteriorating agricultural productivity, and armed conflict are some of

the motives behind international labour migration. According to statistics, about 400,000 youths hit the

employment market every year.

The major problems faced by the youths of Nepal could be many. Some of them are, Different types of

Unemployment, Less scope for self-employment, Poor Practical education, Incompletion of formal

education, Involvement in antisocial activities, including AIDS and drug addiction, Unawareness in health

care , Imbalanced education and training, Inadequate opportunities for participation in public decision-

making, Inadequate facilities for recreation and creative work, Alcoholism and drug dependence, Less

knowledge about modern technology, Inefficiency in IT, Absence of conducive environment of sports and

games, Lack of sense of accountability and responsibility to family and society, Moral degradation, Less

aware about their rights

Background/Project: Nepal is blessed with a rich cultural heritage. Culture has been called 'the way of life

for an entire society'. The statement holds particularly true in the case of Nepal where every aspect of life,

food, clothing and even occupations are culturally classified. In a society so feudalistic and so fractured

across class lines, cultural heritage comes as a fresh wind. The culture of Nepal includes the codes of

manners, dress, language, rituals, norms of behaviour and systems of belief. The culture of Nepal is a unique

combination of tradition and change. The traditions are followed as they were and new customs are created

to keep pace with the changing times. The land is rich with diverse cultural groups like Tharu, Yadav, Ahir,

Newars and others.

Nepal has several ancient pilgrimage sites. Each temple is attached to a legend or belief that glorifies the

miraculous powers of its deity. Some of the temples and stupas are in need of renovation. This project aims

to renovate this cultural heritage.

Objectives: To protect the cultural heritage, to make the people aware on the importance of cultural

Background/Project: Okhaldhunga, District of the Himalayas - This small paradise on earth is close to

Everest Region. It is located in Sagarmatha zone in the North-East part of Nepal. It is one of the beautiful

places of Nepal if Okhaldhunga is viewed with sacred vision. It has numerous sights which are fascinating.

VIN’s Project site (Taluwa VDC,

Bhadaure VDC and Thulachhap

VDC) is on South-East part from

the district headquarters,

Because of the geographical situation, it has limited developmental activities and facilities. Unlike

Kathmandu, Okhaldhunga has numbers of illiterate people. Okhaldhunga lacks proper education facility.

Due to Lack of education facilities, young people move from Okhaldhunga to cities like Kathmandu or fly

abroad to secure proper education. There are schools but they don’t have standard education due to which

they face comparative disadvantage in their academic and professional career. The existing education

standard of Okhaldhunga is not good and compatible with the other community.

According to VIN’s baseline survey 2012, there are only 91.56% children who have been attending school

regularly, but 1.44% children are not regular in school. Similarly, 10.42% students dropout of the school.

There are 2.99% families which are well aware about child rights and 20.69% families know a fair amount

about child rights. But, 76.30% families know very little about child rights. Most children who drop out are

Project Background: Nepal is an agricultural country. About 80% of the people’s occupation is agriculture.

Trade is also mainly of agricultural products. Agriculture provides raw materials for the industries. With the

help of good manure, seeds, equipment and irrigation the growth of crops is increased in large quantity.

Agriculture is known as the backbone of economy of Nepal. Agriculture occupation consists of three types:

food crops, cash crops and mixed crops. Beside this, there are Livestock, Horticulture and Fishery.

VIN’s Multi-Purpose Farm (MPF) concept is based on low-external inputs and sustainable farming

practices, which allow farmers to integrate different technical elements into the MPF system. It will

agricultural activities, mono-cropping (rice or maize or wheat or millet) fields converts into integrated

farms, which included fish ponds, fruit trees, cash crops, vegetable gardens and domestic animal

husbandry.

It is a five-year plan in Taluwa community, and is in partnership with local youths, which we aim to develop

to the particular situation of the project site and specific farm layouts, species composition, cropping

patterns and cultivation techniques will be introduced and monitored following the technical advice of

agricultural technicians.

In Nepal agriculture is the main source of income of the people. However farmers are unaware about

modern technology and multiple farms. A group of youth and women are migrating to other countries for

labour. There is a big force of unemployed youth in the country. The main aim of the multiple farming is to

provide opportunity to youth to get involved into the project. It will enhance the entrepreneurship skills

among youth and women on agriculture.

Objectives

To train local people in the fields of agricultural management, entomology, disease control, organic

farming, marketing, farming techniques, irrigation and plant nutrition etc.

To establish a model MPF in Taluwa, Okhaldhunga

To develop social entrepreneurs and run enterprises in rural Nepal
