But, is it that simple to become a smart city?
What must be done to be able to use this title?
This section will answer all of the above questions.
You may need a reminder of what exactly a smart city is.
It is a use of technology to offer a better working,
smarter habitat, facilitating not only everyday lives,
but also the environment. All this thanks to collecting
data and focusing on challenges that may be solved in
a smart way.
Since we already reminded you the definition, let us
unveil the ways your city may become smarter.

We are happy to live in the era of childhood dreams coming true. However, the idea of robot maids and magic
wands is no longer what we hope for, since it made room for technology which enriches our everyday lives.
The possibilities for better future are more and more visible everywhere we look. In time, things we are
excited about now, may seem really ordinary, as we will become used to them.
C O M M U N I C AT E T H E V I S I O N
P R I O R I T I S E
D E P L O Y S M A RT T H I N G SSmart objects, sensors and facilitations are the novelty in the world as we know it. It is
sensible to introduce them slowly from the very first stages (as we’ve already mentioned).
Citizens need time to get accustomed and accept the new facilities. We must all bear in
mind that, in time, such changes are bound to improve people’s lives and communication.
T H I N K A B O U T T H E F U T U R E
D E T E R M I N E T H E N E E D S O F T H E A R E AEach city is different and has diverse issues. Thanks to using smart technologies, most of them
may be solved. However, not all solutions will match all areas. Why? There are many reasons like
location, climate, or temperature. This is why, not only should the authorities dig deeper into
specific needs of their city, but also make sure to engage citizens in the decision making process.
Once all the smart facilitations and objects are implemented, they would have to be looked after
in several years. This is why, cities must not only gather, but also constantly teach the supervisors
of the new. To enjoy smart benefits for a long, long time.
Create a mock of a plan. What’s the budget for the project? What are the city needs? There will be
a lot of merits – however, it is all worth it since making these intentions official may encourage
investors to spend their money. Additionally, citizens will feel appreciated and involved, and this is
extremely important.
Not all facilitations have to happen at once. A lot of ideas will get implemented gradually. Objects
with long-term benefits should come first on the list, to test the very idea of smart city in practice.
Once these work out, the rest will follow and soon your city will be the example of smartness.

We all remember movies that seemed a little bit too science fiction to
ever become real. How about cities that have a ‘brain’ of some sort?
Quite extraordinary, isn’t it? Well, it’s high time you got used to the
idea, because their time is now.
We have already explained that smart city is a place where typical
infrastructure is combined with smart solutions, facilitating everyday lives.
Sounds doable, doesn’t it? However, as you’ve already read, it isn’t easy
to become a smart city since quite a few requirements must be met.
What is more, according to European Urban Audit, a given city must
have a specific number of citizens – between 300 000 and 1 million.
Additionally, a city must be on the Urban Audits lists and be able to
identify its boundaries (80% of free area is needed).
S M A RT C I T Y F O R C O N V E N I E N C EModern technologies emerge every day. In this chasing world,
each minute becomes priceless. You may wonder what cities can
do about that. Well, Hong Kong, for example, configured their
pedestrian crossings according to the traffic – this helps to better
control traffic lights.
In Singapore, traffic lights send real-time data to predict problematic
situations on the roads. This is not all, Barcelona can steer the traffic
so as to clear the ways for ambulances and fire engines, to make
them reach their destinations quicker. All of the above are a great
example of how innovation can save lives!
Cities can also come in handy when the problem of parking spots
arises. Nice partnered with Cisco to make this problematic activity
easier. They introduced sensors that indicate free spots in given
areas. They also control the lights and waste disposal. All of this
to make everyday lives of their citizens easier, and to save money of
course.

Smart cities want to be as flexible for their citizens
as possible, this is why reaching to them personally
is a brilliant idea. Let’s start with Barcelona, where
authorities give all their deaf citizens a special
device that emphasises the sounds of the city.
In Catalonia, the elderly are given a special necklace
that has an alarm built in it, which is connected to
a special call centre that takes care of them in need.

We think smart cities are really smart enough to slowly become synonymous
with better living, bringing more and more opportunities. They help people
take care of the environment and guarantee efficient use of technology.
Even though, this reality is perceptible only for few countries, hopefully,
smart cities will eventually stop being a luxury.
S M A RT C I T Y F O R E N V I R O M E N T
There are many ways to improve the environment.
Smart cities all over the world try to outrun
themselves in coming up with better solutions.
That is why, New York has world’s best bike rental
service, whereas Brazil’s Curitiba has created
a cheaper transportation system that made
citizens decide to let their cars go.
Even though that happened almost 30 years ago,
Curtiba is still one of the most ecological cities in
the world. What is more, thanks to this, the city
could transform some areas into greeneries.
This is not all, 70% of city’s waste is recycled.
Copenhagen, on the other hand, wants to become
carbon neutral to diminish the CO2 emission and
make their city better and ‘healthier’.

Security. The word that is uttered and discussed over
and over again, is especially popular now, in the era
of ‘smartness’. Can security be understood doubly?
In this case, it can.
Let us walk you through the systems that enhance
the security in your smart city and solutions that
keep an eye on these very systems themselves.
The development of smart cities is quite a new
phenomenon and this is the reason why the time
has come to think about people’s safety. It is the
proverbial ‘two birds with one stone’ situation.
D O Y O U T H I N K Y O U R S M A R T C I T Y I S S E C U R E ?
S A F E S T R E E T S Monitoring of the roads is a perfect solution not only when you are in a hurry, it can also
keep you safe from potentially hazardous situations. Sudden overtaking, increased traffic
and lack of parking spaces is the tale of the past, since the data about all of the above is
gathered and updated in real-time to make your journeys as smooth as possible.
S A F E PAV E M E N T S Motion-activated street lights come in handy whenever you happen to walk home after
dark. They work by detecting the presence of human, so the moment a person steps on
the pavement it lights itself, to slowly dim when it’s empty. This solution, however simple
it sounds, has one additional merit – it can save a lot of energy.
S A F E B O R D E R S Newly installed solutions in smart cities have yet another advantage, namely intelligent
layout of properties. This enables them to monitor the borders and flow of incoming people.
Not only can people live in a new, smart and functional
surrounding, but they can also feel safe in it.
Since sensors are embedded in almost all new devices
they can also provide monitoring of the area, which is
why there have been many ideas on how to introduce
security to the cities. We decided to comment on
some of them.

The main idea behind smart solutions is that they accelerate gathering data.
That is the primary reason for introducing security, since very sensitive
information should be protected.
What should be done to secure the information?
W O R K W I T H P R O F E S S I O N A L S Collaborating with security organisations is a smart move. Not only
will they keep an eye on the city and its growth, but also take care
of security updates which should be implemented regularly.
B E P I C K Y There are a lot of systems that have become obsolete through the
years. It’s best to disable or replace them – this move will help your
city reduce the energy usage, as well as free the resources.
As you can see, integrated and smart solutions can ease the lives of citizens.
The earlier you decide to implement these practices, the better. Not only to feel
safe, but also to be safe because technology will only become more sophisticated
in time.
U S E A U T H O R I S E D A C C E S S Encryption and regular changing of passwords in the systems used
by the city is the imperative here. This should go hand in hand with
employees’ turnover and software updates.

After reading the previous pages, the concept of smart
city is quite well-known right now. The rules to become
one, the issues that may be faced along the way. Many
cities have the ambition to be known as ‘smart’, but
what exactly should be done to become the one that will
stand up in the crowd? If you want to find out, read on.
The possibilities are endless and what is more, some of
the facilitations are already implemented in some of the
cities. Things like the public broadband, charging stations
or traffic apps are just the beginning of a very long list. On
the following pages you will discover the options that, in
our opinion, are simply a mixture of neat and usable ideas.
H O W T O M A K E Y O U R C I T Y S TA N D O U T I N T H E C R O W D ?
Almost all cities have abundant buildings that scare
people away and take up space. Demolition of the unused
properties and changing them into something more pleasant,
like a park, seems the right way to go. Later on, these
spaces could be e.g. covered with noise cancelling roofs
that not only would give you a chance to relax, but also
would block the pollution.
Urban cities lack green places because most of them had to
be traded for housing estates, roads or skyscrapers. Why not
do this the other way round and finally have a breath of fresh,
clean air in the city of hubbub and fumes?

Yes, energy, because it is the star of this section. This is yet
another resource than can be used many times. So, what
exactly can be done? Generating energy from renewable
sources like solar or wind power. This way, buildings with
their roofs or walls will be able to produce energy for own
needs. This is not all, since many cities pledge they will
become carbon neutral in time, which means we will have
power plants that produce energy, simultaneously making
pollution a thing of the past.
Cities around the world want to become as convenient for
their citizens as possible, working with world renowned
specialists. Everything starts with little improvements and,
judging by our examples, smart cities will be a definite hit.
Nowadays, water is taken for granted, whereas
1 in 10 people don’t have access to it. Since it
pours down on us every now and then, it is really
wise to finally start using it.
Collecting rain water with the purpose to heat
buildings during winter seems obvious, however
did you know that it can also be put into specially
designed turbines that will be able to cool you
during heatwaves? Well, this is all possible now.
Not only it is environmentally friendly, but also
simply smart.

If in 1908 someone told Henry Ford that almost
110 years later cars will be robot-like entities
with intelligence of their own, we bet he wouldn’t
believe it for a minute. Would his first question
be ‘What are robots?’ or maybe he’d be more
interested in ‘Why?’ and ‘How?
What does car industry have in stock? Recently
Mercedes came up with a plan for a new service
that they’d like to introduce to their most respected
clients who don’t have time to drive a car, however
still need means of transportation – self-driving
limousines.
It seems like an excellent solution because the
limousines are said to be at least 35% cheaper
than taxis. The service will be compatible with
simultaneously released app, allowing its users to
hail and pay for the ride. The bad news is that we
won’t be able to experience it soon – the service
won’t be available until 2025.
Right now, you and your phone can be fully
integrated with the vehicle. Android and iOS
devices can actually do most actions for you,
letting you focus on driving and increasing your
safety.
The moment your device is plugged in, it becomes
locked and reacts only to voice commands. The
voice control can do things from changing a song,
through checking a route, to calling your boss.
Getting back to more ordinary reality, let’s go
over some other means of transport.
Delayed planes can really get on nerve - we’ve all
been there. However, thanks to smart technology
this issue may be fixed. Some airlines decided to
equip their planes with special functionalities that
can help in tracking, which basically reduces the
number of flights which are not on time. This has
yet another merit – enormous savings for plane
companies.
Next novelty is the application of, so-called,
smart skin to the exterior of the plane. It is a sensor
bed tracking the atmosphere during flights, wind
speed and movements around the plane. Most
importantly though, it precisely monitors its state,
and in case of problems – reports them right away.

Smartness will also allow trains to take a giant
leap forward. How? By improving communication
between networks. Doing so will highly improve the
safety of passengers and reduce commuting costs.
There are also several perk benefits, like shortening
the time of processing tickets.
Trains are to be equipped with devices that can be
controlled in the cloud and their communication
(machine to machine) is bound to be faster and
more effective as well.
Boats weren’t overlooked, and yes, you’ve guessed
it – they are full of sensors. These little devices
collect data on weather conditions and send them
to other vessels. What is more, they increase the
safety of sailors because they are constantly
connected, which, in case of an emergency, can
speed up rescue operations.
As you can see, it doesn’t matter if you want to fly
like a bird, get a second wind or simply get a little
bit nautical, smart reality is there to make your
journeys fast and safe.

Latest technologies move forward very quickly, so
quickly it is sometimes hard to keep up with them.
We are slowly, but surely, entering the world of
Harry Potter. However, until we are able to teleport,
we have to rely on new technologies that seem to
be out of this world anyway.
Before we get too excited about the bright and
colourful side of the novelty, let’s stop for a moment
and think about the threats it may bring.

In the era of smartness it was only a matter of time
before we felt the unknown presence even when we
are alone. As gibberish as it may sound, this is the
reality – smart buildings are the new aspect of
smartness all of us will sooner or later experience. The answer is simple – most buildings have too
simple and unsophisticated security systems which
are not able to handle the immensity of the
construction. This is why, it is easy for attackers
to focus on retrieving personal, financial or even
business information.
These aren’t the only problems, though – some
actions may also have health and safety
consequences.
Opening secure doors in prisons, switching off all
the lights in big buildings, changing the temperature
in tiny spaces… These are just a few examples.
Gartner suggests to design and look at building’s
spaces as a whole. They shouldn’t be neither
developed nor renovated independently.
Each new component must undergo a lot of security
controls – monitoring devices and sensors that must
be properly managed are just the beginning.
There’s no denying that smart buildings are a very
interesting phenomena. If treated cautiously, the
voluminous amounts of facts and figures gathered
thanks to them can ease our everyday lives.

However fascinating the idea of do-it-all constructions
may seem, it brings security threats. Not only to the
buildings themselves, but more importantly to the
people inside of them.
You may wonder why buildings are to be more of a threat
than any other aspect of smartness. Well, the answer
is simple. They progress organically, through years, during
which many renovations take place. And this is what
makes the buildings more exposed.
Changing as little as a fuse or a lamp becomes a security
hazard, since these seemingly little things may be
examples of intelligent devices. However, most attacks
start as innocent pranks, orchestrated just for fun by
digital vandals.

Technology in the healthcare sector equipped us in smart solutions that change
the perception of hospitals’ services, which are to make sure patients get the best
and most effective care possible. New facilitations appear every day and it’s all thanks
to connectivity. Below, you’ll find a few examples of smart solutions supporting the
development of healthcare.
S M A R T H E A LT H C A R E
C O N N E C T E D O P E R AT I N G R O O M S Connected operating rooms is a very high-tech idea. These are spaces filled with
many devices, all of which serve just one purpose — to keep the patient safe. They
also provide individual feedback on each patient’s state and monitor the reflexes.
This means that it is not only possible to offer better analyses, but even to predict
severe health problems, like heart attacks.
That’s not all though, since thanks to smart devices the duration of the entire surgery
is to be reduced, which is very beneficial for the patients, as well as for the doctors.
M E D I C AT I O N D O S I N G D E V I C E This very device caters to those who have trouble remembering to take their meds
— mostly elderly patients. It dispenses cups of pre-prepared doses. It also notifies
patients when it’s time to take their pills or if the daily dose was missed. Not to mention
it prepares new cups. In case of any malfunctions, the device sends special
signals.
Thanks to that, patients who feel better don’t have to stay on the hospital’s
premises and occupy beds.
I M P E N D I N G T H E G R O W T H O F S M A RT H E A LT H C A R EThe above mentioned are only examples of inventions that enter the market regularly.
Nowadays, technology offers so many facilitations that is not possible to list all of them.
The reason why smart healthcare solutions develop this quickly, is the demand for
progressive healthcare information system.
Additionally, the hectic lifestyle that most of us lead makes us prone to numerous
diseases and the society is getting older. Due to these factors, there is bigger and bigger
need for caretakers — automated hospitals using smart solutions would appear very
helpful in such a case and would guarantee the help and support necessary.

S M A RT M O B I L I T Y C I R C U L A R E C O N O M YThe term that is becoming ‘the new black’ nowadays. Why? Because it advocates that we should
cherish materials and products. Especially those which are finite.
Turning waste into buildings, cars and fuel is what will be happening thanks to sensors, able to track
waste with potential of being recycled. This way, the answer to the question what does the future
hold for smart city is: we will live in developed, as well as clean environment.
P N E U M AT I C S Y S T E MImagine buildings with pneumatic waste disposal. Well, you no longer have to, as they are slowly
becoming an every-day reality.
Songdo in South Korea, for example, wants to become one of the smartest cities out there. They built
their houses according to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification, which
means they are very sustainable.
The pneumatic system will be able to absorb the waste and send it to processing centres, where
it will be recycled. Easy, fast and effective on top of everything.
The more people migrate to the cities, the more difficult mobility will become. This is why, it must
go through a bit of a makeover.
Thanks to smart technologies, people will have real-time data and information on the congestions, as well
as travel time, vehicles volume and traffic movements. And since all the information will be stored in the
cloud, it’ll be easily accessible. Everything to help you save your quality time.
To make this possible the authorities will have to think about simple solutions, like applications gathering
real-time data. What is more, they will also need to modernise the layout of the cities, to limit road
traffic. And less traffic means less fumes.
The apps will also be able to show you quickest way to get to your destination and offer alternative
means of transport, which will get you there even faster.
Do you like what the future holds? We are sure the solutions will be much more sophisticated than we can
even imagine. After all, technology develops in an astounding pace, gradually introducing smartness
into our daily lives.

C A R B O N N E U T R A L I S MThe future is supposed to be greener and better. To achieve that some changes
must be quickly applied. Aiming to become carbon neutral is on top of the
list for a number of cities, e.g. Masdar City in UAE or Malmo in Sweden.
Authorities of these cities decided to get rid of all gas-fuelled cars. Instead,
all of their vehicles are to run on renewable energy or be electric. Thanks
to this, there will be no harmful fumes emissions and zero waste, since most
of the new ‘fuel’ is produced from food leftover or solar farms.
