Peer Tutoring of Reading using
What good readers do when they don’t know a
word..
• They look at the letters in the word
• They predict what the word is from the meaning of the story
• They use their past experiences to help them understand the story
• They match the language they hear to the language they read
A Tutoring Session1. Smile and be friendly
A Tutoring Session2. Introduce the book by looking
through it, talking about the pictures and about what is happening. Make predictions about what might happen
This builds understanding and interest
Praise• We should praise our partner

• We should praise when they correct themselves after a mistake
• We should praise when they get a word correct after we have prompted them
