March Happenings

Roc ket Club

Right now, Rocket Club is inhab-

ited by fourth graders who are

building a rocket called The Hornet.

It is a four-finned beauty that will

soar like an arrow, and the kids will

finish them soon. Stay tuned for the

launch date.

When the fourth graders are done,

the fifth graders will step in and

design their own rockets. The re-

sults in the past have been clever

and inventive, from mustaches to

sonic screwdrivers. What will this

year’s fifth graders make? A flying

banana? A rocket-powered teddy

bear? Who knows!?

(Special note: Middle schoolers

who want to be in Rocket Club can

buy their own kit and bring it by

Room 13 to put it together. See

Sucesos de Marzo

Club de Cohetes

En este momento, el Club de Co-

hetes está habitado por jovencitos

del cuarto grado quienes están

construyendo un cohete llamado

“The Hornet”. Es una belleza de cua-

tro aletas que se remontará como

una flecha, y los niños lo termi-

narán pronto.

Cuando los niños del cuarto grado

terminen, los del quinto grado van

a comenzar a diseñar sus propios

cohetes. En el pasado los resultados

han sido inventivos e ingeniosos,

desde bigotes hasta destornilladores

sónicos. ¿Qué es los que harán este

año los niños del quinto grado?

¿Quizás una banana voladora?

¿Quizás un osito de peluche propul-

sado por un cohete? ¿Quién sabe?

(Nota especial: los jóvenes de la

escuela intermedia que quieran ser

parte del Club de Cohete pueden

comprar su propio equipo y traerlo

Transitional Kindergarten, (Mrs.

Smith): February was a month of exciting

activities. Please ask your child if their pre-

diction of the first day of

March came in as they had

hoped. We will begin learn-

ing about farm animals this

month as well as celebrating

Dr. Seuss’ birthday and wel-

coming the first day of

Spring.

Our Easter party will be held on Friday,

March 27th. More information will be sent

home as the date gets closer.

The students are doing a great job of

learning their letters, sounds, sight words

and numbers. There are even some in our

class who are reading! Mrs. Smith is proud

of each and every child in this class. They

have all made gains.

Mrs. Smith is looking forward to meeting

with parents during conference week so

she can share information about your

child’s growth with you! Remember, this is

TK and everyone’s journey will look a

little different.

Kindergarten, (Mr. Schaffer and

Mrs. Davis): February is over and what a

month of celebrations it was! We had a

great time on the 100th day and our Valen-

tine Party was fantastic! Thank you to all

who planned, helped, and sent goodies for

the Valentine Party.

We will begin long vowel and silent-e

words this month and continue with word

families. We continue working on numbers

11-20 and adding and subtracting to 10.

The students are reading and writing

every day; it is fantastic to see their growth

in both areas!

We are looking forward to seeing you at

conferences March 10-13.

First Grade, (Mrs. Dack and Mrs.

Pallas): First grade students will be read-

ing a lot of expository text, (true, informa-

tional books), for the rest of the school

year. We will learn about animals, plants,

and weather. The children will learn how

to write a brief report and find the infor-

mation they need in the text. The phonics

skills will be the vowel pairs os, ow, oo,

ew, and ou, as well as ie, igh, and com-

pound words.

Math will include reviewing numbers to

120, measurement, and practicing addition

and subtraction facts to 20. One of the

most common addition and subtraction

strategies is making a 10. The students are

learning that to solve 15-7 you can change

the 15 into 10+5, then think 10-7 = 3 and

3+5=8, so 15-7=8. If you were adding

7+8 you could think of 7 as 2 and 5. Use

the 2 to add to 8 and make 10. Then

10+5=15.

Third Grade, (Mrs. Sweet and Mrs.

Martinez): Third graders are continuing

to work hard. We are continuing to work

on informational text. We are learning and

writing about animal habitats. Please con-

tinue to have your child read the fluency

passages three times a week. They are mak-

ing progress with their fluency!

In math we are working on reviewing

adding and subtracting with regrouping.

We will also review multiplication and

division and will soon move into fractions.

When your child knows his/her multiplica-

tion facts, it makes math much easier, so

continue to practice the math facts.

Fourth Grade, (Mr. Brotnov and

Mrs. Lyles): The fourth graders of room

13 have been exploring how to solve prob-

lems. Whether it’s having the teacher call

you by the wrong name, restoring an an-

tique dragon, or leaving home to work at a

logging camp, problems are out there, and

we learn how to deal with things by read-

ing about kids who have overcome prob-

lems.

And, of course, there are math problems!

Lately these involve multiplication and

division of big numbers, the metric system,

and perimeter and area. It’s all helpful, and

it’s not the slog through the swamp the

kids thought it was going to be.

The fourth graders have also been learn-

ing about food chains, and they will soon

take the knowledge they gleaned from last

year’s animal report and apply it to how

that particular critter fits into the puzzle

with the thousands of other critters in its

ecosystem. It’s a lot of toothy, carnivorous

fun, full of icky mold, hungry buzzards,

and wonderful producers.

On the horizon is the mission trip to San

Juan Bautista-the first one in a long time.

Woo-Hoo! It promises to be a good time

for all, and details will follow.

Fifth Grade, (Mrs. Barker and Mrs.

Hawkins): March finds the fifth grade

fighting the Revolutionary War. The Colo-

nies have been established,

the French and Indian Wars

have been fought, and now

the colonists are tired of

paying taxes and high tariffs

to England. This comes as

they read stories about the

Kindergarten Transicional, (Sra.

Smith): Febrero fue un mes de muchas

actividades emocionantes. Por favor

pregúnteles a sus niños si sus predicciones

sobre el primer día de marzo resultaron

como habían esperado. Vamos

a comenzar a aprender sobre

animales de granja este mes y

también vamos a celebrar el

cumpleaños del Dr. Seuss y

vamos a darle la bienvenida al

primer día de la primavera.

Nuestra fiesta de Semana Santa será el

viernes 27 de marzo. Mandaremos más

información a las casas cuando se acerque la

fecha.

Los estudiantes están haciendo un gran

trabajo aprendiendo sus letras, sonidos,

palabras conocidas a simple vista y núme-

ros. ¡Algunos niños en nuestra clase ya

están leyendo! La Sra. Smith está muy or-

gullosa de cada niño en esta clase. Todos

han progresado mucho.

La Sra. Smith está esperando con gusto

reunirse con los padres durante la semana

de conferencias para poder compartir in-

formación sobre el progreso de los niños

con ustedes. Recuerden, este es el TK y la

jornada de cada niño se ve un poco diferen-

Vamos a comenzar las palabras con voca-

les largas y con la “e” silenciosa este mes y

vamos a continuar con las familias de pala-

bras. Seguimos trabajando con los números

del 11-20 y sumando y restando hasta el

10.

Los estudiantes están leyendo y escribien-

do cada día; es fantástico ver cómo han

progresado en ambas áreas.

Primer Grado (Sra. Dack y Sra. Pa-

estarán leyendo bastante texto expositivo

tinez): Los niños del tercer grado siguen

trabajando arduamente. Seguimos trabajan-

do en texto informativos. Estamos apren-

diendo y escribiendo sobre hábitats de ani-

males. Por favor sigan hacienda que su niño

lea las páginas de fluidez tres veces por

semana. ¡Están progresando con su fluidez!

En matemáticas estamos trabajando en

repasar sumar y restar con reagrupamiento.

También vamos a repasar la multiplicación

y la división y pronto nos moveremos a las

fracciones. Si sus niños saben las tablas de

multiplicación, las matemáticas les son más

fáciles así que sigan practicando las tablas

de matemáticas.

Cuarto Grado, (Sr. Brotnov y Sra.

Lyles): Los niños del cuarto grado del

salón 13 han estado explorando cómo solu-

cionar problemas. Ya sea que la maestra te

esté llamando por el nombre equivocado,

estés restaurando un dragón antiguo o de-

jando tu casa para trabajar en un campa-

mento de tala, los problemas existen y

aprendemos a lidiar con las cosas leyendo

sobre niños que han tenido que vencer

problemas.

¡Por supuesto que hay problemas de ma-

temáticas! Ultimadamente, estos han invo-

lucrado multiplicación y división de núme-

ros grandes, el sistema métrico y perímetro

y área. Todo es de gran ayuda y no ha sido

tan difícil como los niños creían que iba a

ser.

Los niños del cuarto grado han estado

aprendiendo también sobre las cadenas de

comida y pronto van a tomar el conoci-

miento que han obtenido del reporte de

animales del año pasado y lo van a aplicar a

cómo ese bicho en particular cave en el

rompecabezas con los miles de otros bichos

en su ecosistema. Es una diversión carnívo-

ra que produce sonrisas que enseñan todos

los dientes, llena de moldes repulsivos y

productores de maravillas.

people of the Revolution in social studies as

well as for language arts. They will soon

know how some of the Tories and Patriots

felt. We will continue to read about the

people, their problems and solutions.

Math finds us factoring the fabulous frac-

tions and soon we will move on to graph-

ing ordered pairs. Science is a challenge as

the students continue with the states of

matter and their chemical and physical

breakdowns. As always, read 20 minutes a

night and practice those math facts!

Seventh Grade, (Mrs. Huffmon): As

the trimester is coming to a close, our sev-

enth graders continue to work hard each

day. Read these interesting journal ex-

cerpts to get an insight into the day of a

seventh grader at Washington Colony!

Math: Francisco Bautista-We are learning

how to graph inequality equations. We are

also learning that on the positive side of the

number line, it gets bigger as you go far-

ther to the right; on the negative side of the

number line, it gets smaller as you go far-

ther to the left.

Lilly Ruiz-We are practicing one-step ine-

qualities. It was tough at first, but you get

the hang of it.

English Language Arts: Atiana Aguilar-

We are learning how to write and identify

simple, complex, compound, and com-

pound-complex sentences.

Destiney Salazar-We have been focusing on

vocabulary words of the week, and we

have also been doing Accelerated Reader.

plants and did many ex-

periments with them.

Atiana Aguilar– We are

learning about Gregor Mendel’s work. His

work shows us about dominant and reces-

sive traits. This helps us determine how the

next generation will look.

Social Studies: Ava Ross– We’re learning

about China and how they rebuilt their

empire. We’ve been talking about leaders

and culture.

Victoria Jimenez– We are learning about

China’s government.

Electives: Richie Martinez– In Art we just

finished our impressionism paper, and

mine came out good. In PE we prepare for

the mile and then play basketball. In Lead-

ership we are planning the Valentine’s Day

dance.

Vanessa Hernandez– We are improving our

running with the mile and are playing bas-

ketball. In Yearbook, I am co-editor for

events, and it’s fun to work on new pages

and learn new things. In Academic Leader-

ship, we are planning for the Valentine’s

Day dance and writing two essays based on

leadership qualities.

Lizbeth Zamora– We are going on the com-

puters and learning more about coding.

Francisco Bautista– In PE we are running the

mile, doing 15 minutes of running, and

push-ups and sit-ups. I’m in Yearbook and

we are learning how to use Picasa and

Fotofusion. I am in Band and right now we

are trying to create our own music.

Extra-curricular Activities: Destiny

Maravilla– I’m involved in after school

basketball. I like it because I get to play

basketball with all of my friends. I like that

we go against other schools.

Destiney Salazar– I am currently in basket-

ball, and I am excited about the many up-

coming games we have, but I’m just cross-

ing out all of the days up to softball season!

Whoop, whoop!

Lilly Ruiz– Since basketball isn’t really my

sport, I’m the basketball assistant! It’s

really cool. I get to go to

away games, and at

home games, I do the

score board.

Sevanna Jaura– I am now

in basketball, and the

struggle is pretty real because I’m so short.

However, that doesn’t stop me from play-

ing. I just need to keep working hard to get

better.

Clearly, our seventh graders are enjoying

their time in Middle School, taking advan-

tage of a variety of unique opportunities

that teachers and coaches provide for them.

We are proud of our students as they con-

tinue to challenge themselves to reach new

heights each day!

Revolucionaria. Las Colonias han sido esta-

blecidas, las guerras entre los franceses y los

Nativo Americanos han sido peleadas y aho-

ra los ciudadanos de las Colonias están can-

sados de pagar impuestos y tarifas altas a

Inglaterra. Esto llega al ir leyendo historias

sobre las personas de la Revolución en estu-

dios sociales y también para artes del len-

guaje. Pronto sabrán cómo algunos de los

“Tories” y Patriotas se sintieron. Vamos a

seguir leyendo sobre las personas, sus pro-

blemas y las soluciones.

Claramente nuestros jóvenes del séptimo

grado están disfrutando su tiempo en la

Escuela Intermedia y está tomando ventaja

de una variedad de oportunidades únicas

que los maestros y entrenadores les están

dando. ¡Estamos orgullosos de nuestros

estudiantes según se desafían para lograr

nuevas Alturas cada día!
