Previous and Current Work

• Other ProjectsMake extensive use of MARS archive for accessing re-analysis and operational analysis data.1. ERA-Interim, faster to use MARS than the web pages. Studies of hydrological

cycle, high latitude moisture and energy budgets, tropical and extra-tropical cyclones, polar lows.

2. Operational data, predictability studies of ensemble and deterministic systems for extra-tropical cyclones (Lizzie Froude), tropical cyclones (Emerton, Hodges), polar lows (Zappa).

3. ATHENA, collaboration with Thomas Jung and COLA. Integrations for decadel periods, including climate change, using simulations of the IFS at resolutions from T159(125km)-T1279(16km). Studies of tropical and extra-tropical cyclones.

4. Matt Hawcroft (PhD), “Evaluating latent heat release in extratropical cyclones from high-resolution climate models, remote sensing and global reanalyses”, collaborating with Richard Forbes (ECMWF) to produce output from the ERA-Interim system for input to COSP (CLOUDSAT, ISCCP).

5. TIGGE, easier to access via MARS for large quantities of data:1. Lizzie Froude, predictability studies of extra-tropical cyclones in TIGGE.2. Predictability studies of tropical cyclones in TIGGE (Emerton, Hodges).

Future Work

1. Special project continuation on downscaling for hydrological models (DEMON).

2. Further observing system experiments with ERA-Interim and ERA-CLIM.3. Predictability studies with ERA-Interim and ERA-CLIM, i.e. experiments

with both the deterministic and ensemble systems.4. Possible collaboration on MINERVA, the follow up to ATHENA.5. Further studies of predictability using data from the operational system

and TIGGE, extra-tropical transition, meso-cyclones (polar lows, medicanes)
