NAPHN17 CONFERENCE & EXPO | 5

WELCOMEPassive House California is proud to welcome you all to NAPHN17 here in Oakland, California. In choosing our conference theme, PASSIVE + RENEWABLES, we not only chose to highlight California’s leading role in the global transition to an all renewable energy future, but also to emphasize the importance of deep energy efficiency. For this reason, we placed the word ‘PASSIVE’ first. We’ve assembled an outstanding program to highlight the interplay between these two essential elements for a built environment that is comfortable, healthy and durable, but will enable us to meet the carbon reduction targets the world now recognizes as imperative for human survival.

We’re deeply honored to have the participation of the top leadership at the United Nations at this event. Passive House California and the NAPHN are proud to be actively collaborating with the UN as part of an expanding team of global experts from institutions and industry, leading the transition of our built environment to one that is truly sustainable for generations to come. The UN has recognized the leadership and contribution of the global Passive House community in this effort and we’re committed to help in every way we can, with or without government support.

Conferences always provide a great opportunity for learning and sharing. We’re excited to offer this event to further educate our community about the new(ish) Primary Energy Renewables framework and to hear from many practitioners how this is working in the field. As usual, the North American Passive House Network Conference & Expo provides a unique opportunity to meet and hear from many of the leading Passive House practitioners from across the nation and around the globe. We’re pleased to be hosting presenters and attendees from across the US and from Canada, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, the UK, Spain, China, Australia and New Zealand - Thank you all for joining us!

We’re indebted to the many volunteers who worked extremely hard to ensure this event would happen. A core team of volunteers has met since early 2016 to make this a reality. This is a thankless job, with little more than a t-shirt as a reward - Please be sure to make note of these folks and thank them for their efforts.

Lastly, we’re grateful to the sponsors and vendors whose participation underwrites much of this event. These are manufacturers who are equally committed to our common building efficiency goals and are willing to support an early adopter market of passionate building adventurers. Be sure to thank them with your business.

11:15 AM - 12:45 PM (Grand Ballroom A)Researching High Performance: A Training Showcase Center & Multifamily Retrofit Feasibility In New York CityBarry McCarron, CREST, Ireland; Yetsuh Frank, Building Energy Exchange, NYC.Building research is yielding practical lessons on both sides of the Atlantic. In New York City, BEEx, in partnership with the Passive House Insitute and Steven Winters Associates, used the PHPP and designPH to develop retrofit strategies for a typical 1-million ft2, 17-story, multifamily building - including step-by-step to accomodate occupied buildings. And in Northern Ireland, CREST, a Centre for Renewable Energy & Sustainable Technologies, achieves carbon neutrality by combining efficient technologies like Passive House with PV system that includes ba robotic solar tracker. The building is being monitored for indoor air quality, temperature, energy consumption, energy generation and energy storage.

11:15 AM - 12:45 PM (Grand Ballroom B)Okay, But Will Your Banker Fund It?Brandon Nicholson & Tim Weyand, NK Architects, Tim McDonald, Onion Flats. Many assume that Passive House projects must be particularly finan-cially challenging. And given new low energy incentives and mandates in California and across the continent, developers are increasingly scratching their heads about how they might make it all work. In this presentation and panel discussion, learn from leading developers of cutting-edge Passive House projects across the U.S. and Canada about the strategies they employ to make their projects more profitable than conventional developments. How do they maximize revenue, reduce expenses and leverage green incentives, essentially how do they “do well by doing good?” Panelists will draw on real world examples to illustrate the details of how they minimize project risk and maximize profitability in green development.

1:45 PM - 3:15 PM (Grand Ballroom A)Passive Goes District Wide: Reaching The Energy & Housing Needs of TomorrowMarine Sanchez, Enhabit; Monte Paulsen, RDH; Mike Eliason, Patano Studio Architecture.Implementation of Passive House is not occuring simply at the building level; entire developments, communities and neighborhoods are being planned and executed. Presenters will take a close look at large scale projects in the UK, and Vancouver, BC, to investigate how partnerships of space, energy and use can promote future flexibility and community.Mr. Eliason explores Baugruppen - an owner-driven multi-family development model being used to reduce development costs and expand urban housing choices.

1:45 PM - 3:15 PM (Grand Ballroom B)Much More Than A Facelift: Home Retrofits For Our New Energy FutureAlbert Rooks, Small Planet Workshop; Stas Zakrzewski, ZH Architects; James Bill, Zero Impact ArchitectsThe home renovation has been too often a slap-dash effort more focused on a cosmetic make-over than a real performance upgrade. Today, Passive House retrofits are demonstrating how even the most decrepit buildings can not only be returned to aesthetic glory but provide state-of-the-art comfort, health and efficiency in an affordable manner. From East Coast wood framed buildings to California bunga-lows, gut retrofits to step-by-step retofits, this presentation will show how the remaking of our existing housing stock is possible.

1:45 PM - 3:15 PM (East Hall C)Renewable Storage and the Passive House: In the Driveway, on the Wall, by the Utility or the Building Itself?Sven Thesen, Project Green Home; Olaf Lohr, Sonnen; Jean Woo, NorCal SolarRenewable energy storage is the key to unlocking our transition to a carbon-free grid, but what are our options for storage? This panel will review the possibilities currently available to us, including EV’s, wall mounted storage and utility scale options. Presenters will look at the financial incentives for adding storage to your home, how it stacks up economically and also review local, regional and grid scale economics, using US and international examples.
