Each of our medical centers has a special care nursery and at our AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Women & Children’s Hospital we have a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit for the tiniest newcomers. Fear, anxiety, and early developmental stage may make it difficult for a child to cooperate with necessary procedures. Failure to cooperate is likely to result in a suboptimal outcome. For patients that are very young, fearful or uncooperative, we offer a team of experienced Pediatric Anesthesiologists to provide safe and effective sedation services for patients requiring diagnostic testing.

We use gentle imaging protocols to use the lowest amount of radiation for adequate imaging based on the size of the child. We image only the indicated areas and try to use alternative diagnostic studies when possible.


• Evaluation of complex medical problems in infants and children when surgery is needed

• Planning and care for before and after surgery

• A nonthreatening environment for children in the operating room

• Pain control, if needed after surgery, either with intravenous (IV) medications or other anesthetic techniques

Dr. Boas reviews all results and monitors the quality of the testing. After the child receives their sweat test, the family meets with a genetic counselor so that they have a complete understanding of cystic fibrosis.

Our pediatric neuropsychologists are licensed clinical psychologists with additional fellowship training in pediatric neuropsychology. Pediatric neuropsychology is a specialty concerned with learning and behavior in relationship to a child’s brain. Services include evaluation, diagnosis and treatment planning for children between the ages of 18 months and 18 years who have cognitive impairment. A neuropsychological evaluation helps to better understand a child’s functioning in areas such as memory, attention, perception, coordination, language and personality. Additionally neuropsychology is a critical piece of epilepsy patient diagnosis and treatment.

Medical DiagnosticsComplete medical, developmental, and behavioral evaluation. Common conditions diagnosed in this clinic include: autism, communication disorders, specific or global developmental delays, and cerebral palsy. Evaluations include assessment of motor development, and screening for feeding, speech-language, and social development.

AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Health System is a designated Level III Epilepsy Center by the National Association of Epilepsy Centers. Under the medical direction of Michael Smith, MD, the program brings together experts from the AMITA Health Women & Children’s Hospital, AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Neurosciences Institute and our program partners, Rush University Medical Center and the Epilepsy Foundation of Greater Chicago, to diagnose and treat some of the most challenging epilepsy cases.

Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU)The epilepsy monitoring unit is dedicated to pediatric patients. During overnight stays, patients are monitored using electroencephalography (EEG) technology. The non-invasive method uses multiple electrodes attached to the scalp to record the brain’s electrical activity. The video captures activity and sound recording of each patient. This gives the specialists the ability to identify seizure activity and plan the best possible treatment which can include medication or surgical intervention.

Ketogenic DietThe ketogenic diet is a high fat, high protein, low carb diet that is used as a treatment option for children with di�cult to control epilepsy. It can be e�ective in decreasing seizure activity and aiding in the medication management of patients. This is a multidisciplinary clinic sta�ed with a neurologist, dietician, and social worker.

Vagus Nerve StimulationVagus nerve stimulation (VNS) involves implanting a pacemaker-like device that generates pulses of electricity to stimulate the vagus nerve.

VNS therapy can help to stop a seizure in progress or reduce the severity of the seizure.



Concussion Clinic

Concussion is increasingly recognized as a health concern among children, particularly young athletes. Concussion (or mild head trauma) can present in many different ways, and as a result may be difficult to detect. A child can sustain a concussion even if he or she did not lose consciousness, and the effects of concussion are often not visible on CT scans. We offer a same day multidisciplinary evaluation where patients first see a fellowship-trained neuropsychologist followed by a board-certified pediatric neurologist at our family friendly clinics.

Neuropsychology Evaluation

• Assessment of psychological functioning

• Education for parents and family regarding concussion

Neurology Exam

• Complete neurological examination including strength, balance, coordination and reflexes

• Neuro-imaging and pharmacologic treatment

Our Concussion experts are available to speak to parent groups, schools, sport associations or park districts about concussion warning signs and symptoms and return to play guidelines.


Headache Center

AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Women & Children’s Hospital Pediatric Headache Center, led by Director, Dr. Hossam AbdelSalam, provides a multidisciplinary approach to care for children and adolescents with headaches, including migraine, tension, cluster and headaches caused by medical disorders.

The medical team crafts a personalized care plan that can include the services of child psychology, nursing, and nutritional counseling to evaluate and treat your child. This collaborative approach to care combines a number of effective treatments:

• Lifestyle changes with possible removal of triggers

• Behavioral coping skills

• Abortive and preventive medications

• Chemo-denervation “Botox”

Multidisciplinary care has improved outcomes because it focuses on many levels of headache management, including medications, teaching new coping skills and educating the patient about the treatment plan.

Neonatal Developmental Follow-Up Clinic

Babies born prematurely may be followed up by the neonatologists for up to one year to monitor for any sign of developmental or medical delays. Babies receive a complete medical evaluation and are seen by a team that includes occupational, speech and developmental therapists. The team collaborates with your primary care physician to make sure that your baby gets a great start in life.

Our specially trained clinical navigator helps families find the right diagnostic evaluations to create a personalized blueprint of care for children through adults who are experiencing developmental or behavioral problems.

MagnetoencephalographyThe MEG at the Illinois MEG Center within AMITA Health Alexian Brothers Neurosciences Institute is used to localize the source of abnormal brain activity, which may be the source of seizures.

Magnetic Resonance ImagingOur 3T MRI has customized epilepsy protocols that produce a remarkably accurate, high-quality image of the brain’s structure to help identify structural abnormalities that may be causing seizures. This is supported by our pediatric anesthesia team.

Ambulatory EEG Services (In-Home Monitoring) Electroencephalogram (EEG) monitoring system that records brain waves for one or more days in the comfort of a patient’s home.

Sleep CenterSleep problems may be seen in 25 to 30 percent of infants and children at some point in their lives and become chronic if left undiagnosed or treated. Our pediatric Sleep Center is specially designed and staffed for comfortable overnight stays. Our dedicated team ensures that the patient and family are cared for in a homelike setting.

Fear, anxiety, and early developmental stage may make it difficult for a child to cooperate with necessary procedures. Failure to cooperate is likely to result in a suboptimal outcome. For patients that are very young, fearful or uncooperative, we offer a team of experienced Pediatric Anesthesiologists to provide safe and effective sedation services for patients requiring diagnostic testing. A history and physical within 30 days of testing is required.

We use Gentle Imaging protocols to use the lowest amount of radiation for adequate imaging based on the size of the child. We image only the indicated areas and try to use alternative diagnostic studies when possible.

Child Life Specialists are professional members of the healthcare team that strive to reduce the stress associated with healthcare experiences and enables children and families to cope in a positive manner. By using age-appropriate education, activities, and play, we minimize stress and encourage coping in children and families.

We are participating in the Pathway to Prevention Study, which provides screening tests for relatives of patients with type 1 diabetes for assessment of autoantibodies (screening phase). Those who test positive for the antibodies are eligible to enter the monitoring phase to estimate their risk for developing type 1 diabetes.
