1. EXECUTIVE SUMMARY Financial Value

In general, the economic value of something is how much a product or service is worth to someone relative to other things (often measured in money). It can be either an assessment of what it could or should be worth (valuation), or an explanation of its actual market value (price). The understanding of value differs from person to person and from discipline to discipline. That is why it makes for interesting debate in financial circles and is the ideal conference trademark for discussion at the Value2016 Conference hosted by the Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences of the University of Johannesburg. There is one thing of which we can be certain: The creation and delivery of Value means business and the only way this can be achieved is by working forward and knowing "The way to go". Academics will deliberate the way to go where Value is concerned in all financial and economic fields and what it means to them from different angles and industry leaders will model new business strategies to capture the essence of delivering Value to their business and clients alike. The Value 2016 Conference is the perfect platform to bring together African business leaders with the world’s foremost academic minds in the financial disciplines. The financial industry has seen staggering changes in recent years and Africa is facing many challenges in this regard. Origins of the Value Conference Series

May 2016 is the perfect time for the Value 2016 Conference. It falls conveniently in the tertiary institution’s calendar and is ideally suited to business leaders in the financial industry after the financial year-end. The Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences of the University of Johannesburg hosted the first Biennial Value Conference in 2006. Attendees attended this event from 10 different countries from four different continents; 180 participants shared information between the different financial disciplines and shed light on their unique views to contribute to the synergistic analysis of how each organisational function can truly add economic value in the financial world. The conferences hosted in 2008, 2010, 2012 and 2014 have grown in stature and strength with high profile keynote speakers inspiring delegates, good quality research being shared amongst academics and interesting panel discussions leaving delegates with the latest developments and trends in adding and creating value in the economic sphere.

3. University of Johannesburg and Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences

The University of Johannesburg has a long and outstanding reputation as a tertiary institution of higher learning. After the amalgamation of The Rand Afrikaans University and Technikon Witwatersrand, the institution was renamed the University of Johannesburg in 2003. The combined experience and academic background has truly contributed to the formation of a learning centre of excellence. The Faculty of Economic and Financial Sciences, the largest Faculty in the University of Johannesburg, hosts approximately 20% of enrolled students across the four departments, namely: the Department of Accountancy, Department of Economics and Econometrics, Department of Finance and Investment Management and Department of Commercial Accounting. 5. About the conference and our associated partners The Value2016 Conference as hosted and produced by the University of Johannesburg is not a series of low-quality seminars attached to a trade show. CENLED

The Value2016 Conference will be hosted in association with the Centre of Local Economic Development (CENLED) that will also run a separate workshop at the Value2016 Conference for the empowerment of Local Economic Development in Southern Africa. CENLED is a national centre based at the University of Johannesburg. Its main mission is to build the capacity of Local Economic Development practitioners to professionalise their careers. The thinkubator is an innovation laboratory for economic development. The main information source of the thinkubator is an LED maturity assessment tool. This tool provides a practical way to rapidly assess (in just three hours) the state of maturity of a municipality or development organisation in the field of LED.
