The Play-Clean Partnership Program

The City of Brampton Play-Clean Program is a partnership between Brampton Clean City, the City of Brampton’s Parks Department and the Brampton Sports Alliance.

As Brampton residents, we all have a responsibility to help protect and enrich our parks, sports fields and recreational facilities. Helping the community and getting involved is simple. Depending on the level of commitment, time and interest, the Play-Clean Partnership Program options – Adopt-a-Sport Venue and Green Initiatives – provide participants the opportunity to make an environmental difference in the community.

Benefits of the Play-Clean Partnership Program

By becoming a Play-Clean Partnership Program participant, you can:

• Help beautify sports fields and recreational facilities• Help preserve natural resources• Help reduce crime and vandalism• Gain a sense of community pride• Enjoy the benefits of outdoor activity• Meet new people• Help recruit more sports organizations to participate• Help build a better, cleaner tomorrow

Eligible Sites

The City of Brampton parks system includes more than 700 sports fields and recreational facilities across the city. Any sports surface or feature recognized as a City of Brampton park and/or recreational facility is eligible and worthy of a Play-Clean partner. If you need assistance in selecting a site, please contact Brampton Clean City and they will work with you to identify the perfect match.

How it Works

Option 1 ‘Adopt-a-Sport Venue’ Partnership Program

The Adopt-a-Sport Venue option offers an active role for participants, allowing for a sense of pride and ownership in the community. Partners have the opportunity to adopt a sports field, court, track or diamond of their choice for a two-year period. Participating groups are required to conduct a minimum of three cleanups, environmental projects and/or events per year. Participants will be required to provide adoption activity reports to the Brampton Clean City Committee in order to keep their adoption valid. A sign will also be placed at the adopted location in recognition of the group’s effort and commitment.

Option 2 ‘Green Initiatives’ Stewardship Program

The Green Initiatives option offers a low key, yet committed role to natural resource conservation and environmental education. Over the course of a season, sports organizations, teams or clubs have the option to partake in ‘green’ workshops and activities to exercise their commitment to the program. Once a group/individual has registered, they will be required to commit to a minimum of two ‘green’ initiatives.

Initiatives for both options can include, but are not limited to:

• Litter cleanups• Debris removal• ‘Weeding’ activities or ‘turf management’ workshops• Reporting vandalism• Involvement in park and community watch safety programs• Community development projects (creating community gardens, planting trees, preparation of

plant identification lists, etc.)• Participation in community events (Spring and Harvest Cleanups, Adoptee Sponsored Student

Park Stewardship events, Conservation Week, Waste Management Week, Earth Day, Parks Month, Take-a-Hike-Day, etc.)

Brampton Clean City will provide support for each participant during the program and co-ordinate staff support when needed. (Staff assistance, materials and equipment are subject to availability.)

Why Become a Play-Clean Partner?

Your commitment to the community is crucial in keeping our parks, sports fields and recreational facilities clean, safe and beautiful.

As a special thank you, Brampton Clean City and the Parks Department will acknowledge the sports organization, team or athlete’s commitment and dedication with an official Certificate of

Appreciation upon fulfillment and completion of their selected activities.

An Adopt-a-Sports Field, Court, Athletic Surface or Recreation Facility Play-Clean

Partner sign and a Certificate of Adoption will be provided at the time of registration.

What Will it Cost?

There is no cost or fee; all that is required is your time. However, you may wish to further your involvement by helping raise funds to plant trees, purchase equipment, improve facilities, or any other initiative to help beautify your adopted location.

Sponsorship Initiatives

Brampton Clean City recruits ‘sponsors’ that support the Play-Clean Program, with contributions of $150 per year, per location, or any other amount they wish to contribute. Funds are used to obtain supplies and materials for participants.

How Much Involvement is Required?

Getting involved is easy and requires as much time as your sports group is willing to provide. Play-Clean partners have two options to choose from.

Option 1 ‘Adopt-a-Sport Venue’ Partnership Program

This option offers a more active role for participants, allowing for a sense of pride and ownership in their community. Partners have the chance to adopt a sports field, court, track, or diamond of their choice for a two-year period and are required to conduct a minimum of six environmental stewardship activities over a two-year period.

Option 2 ‘Green Initiatives’ Stewardship Program

This option offers a lower key, but committed role to natural resource conservation and environmental education. Over the course of a season, Play-Clean partners can partake in ‘green’ workshops and activities to exercise their commitment to the stewardship program.

Terms and Conditions

The City of Brampton, and the community as a whole, recognizes the benefits of operating and maintaining clean and visually appealing sports venues. The Play-Clean Partnership Program is designed to facilitate community group involvement by keeping the City’s sports fields and recreation facilities clean and litter-free. Groups have the option of providing cleanup crews, assisting with park landscaping and participating in event activities designed to improve the City’s sports venues.

By signature, the volunteer group acknowledges the potentially hazardous nature of the work to be performed and agrees to the following terms and conditions:

A. All group members shall sign a release, waiver and agreement before they are permitted to participate in a sports venue cleanup, maintenance and/or event activity.

B. If an organization is intending to add, change or improve the physicality of their adopted location, approval must be granted from the City of Brampton. A detailed work plan outlining the nature and timeline of the project must be submitted to Brampton Clean City and the Parks Department for review. Groups will be notified about the success of their park project submission.

C. Any group containing personnel less than 18 years of age must have adequate adult supervision.

D. All work shall be done in accordance with the City’s noise ordinance. All City parks close at dusk.

E. Groups shall notify the City two weeks prior to schedule the work or event day. Groups shall obtain required supplies and materials for park cleanup, project or event activity from Brampton Clean City during regular departmental hours.

F. The group shall place filled trash bags at the adopted site for pickup and disposal.

G. Any other modifications to the sports venue (i.e. painting, mulching, landscaping) must be pre-approved by the City of Brampton Parks Department (well in advance).

H. Unused materials and supplies furnished by Brampton Clean City or the Parks Department shall be returned to the City following the cleanup, maintenance or event activity.

I. The group shall meet with Brampton Clean City and Parks Management prior to participation in the program to:

• Be instructed on the safety risks and the Parks Department’s expectations of the program participants.• Outline a program or schedule for participants.

The Play-Clean Partnership Program is a voluntary program. The City of Brampton does not provide insurance for participant volunteers. Participants must abide by any appropriate legislative requirements when engaging in maintenance activities.

Brampton Clean City has the right to terminate an agreement if a partner does not meet the terms and conditions of the program agreement. Brampton Clean City may establish other procedures and requirements for the administration of the Play-Clean Partnership Program.

Sport Venue - General Cleanup Activities

Organize a community cleanup activity prior to a sporting event, team practice or fun sports day, involving as many people as possible. Not only will streets, parks, riverbanks and water bodies be visibly less polluted, perhaps even more important, participants will acquire a greater pride in their surrounding environment. If a feeling of stewardship is encouraged within the community, some individuals will be inclined to ensure that things are kept clean. A similar activity following the event might serve to highlight the pollution created by the event, or better yet, to identify which greening measures undertaken by event organizers were most and least successful.

For more information or to obtain cleanup supplies, please contact the Brampton Clean City office.

Spring and Harvest Cleanup Events

Brampton Clean City staff organizes two major cleanup campaigns a year – the Spring Cleanup (April 1 to 30) and the Harvest Cleanup (October 1 to 31). Brampton residents, schools and businesses are encouraged to register and do their part for the local environment by cleaning up parks, parkettes, green spaces, ravines, trails, boulevards and walkways. All registered participants receive sanitary gloves, garbage bags and ‘Cleanup Safety’ information.

Registration forms are available via all local recreation centres, phone, fax, e-mail, Canada Post, or the Brampton Clean City office.

Host a ‘Youth Park Stewardship’ Cleanup Event

Engage youth in your community! Help local students in your area earn their community service hours and create a positive impact on the natural environment.

‘Youth Park Stewardship’ cleanups are easy to organize and can be done any time of the year. Groups can plan their ‘Youth Park Stewardship’ cleanup campaigns daily, weekly or monthly with dates and times that best suit the needs of the youth. Please allow Brampton Clean City two weeks notification as to when your group is planning a ‘Youth Park Stewardship’ event, and we will ensure that your group receives all of the requested cleanup materials and equipment, along with support from the Brampton Clean City environmental education staff. (Staff assistance is subject to availability.)

* Please note, marketing of a ‘Youth Park Stewardship’ event is the responsibility of the

Play-Clean partner.

The ‘Stoop & Scoop’ Program

Every spring, we look forward to the snow melting and seeing the grass again. If you are a dog owner, then there is something else you see a lot of after the snow melts…pet droppings. It’s tempting to just leave it there; after all it is biodegradable and just fertilizer, right? Did you know that in the City of Brampton you are responsible for the removal and sanitary disposal of any excrement? Should you fail to do this, it could be enforced through a civil action that carries a penalty or fine.

The ‘Stoop & Scoop’ program sends a positive message about responsible pet ownership to the public. Dog owners are encouraged to clean up after their pets in community parks by using the provided ‘Stoop & Scoop’ bag dispensers and proper waste receptacles to help keep our parks clean and green. Adopters have the opportunity to raise funds for ‘Stoop & Scoop’ equipment for their adopted park. When you ‘Stoop & Scoop’, the sidewalks, parks and green spaces are much cleaner and more enjoyable for everyone.

Please contact the Brampton Clean City office or the Parks Department at 905.874.2300 for more information on how your Play-Clean group can get involved.

Tree Planting Initiatives

Did you know that by planting 20 million trees, the earth will be provided with an additional 260 million tons of oxygen (O2)? The same 20 million trees will also help remove 10 million tons of carbon dioxide (C02). So come on Play-Clean partners – let’s get busy!

Tree planting activities are a great way to engage your group in making a positive impact on the environment, while beautifying your community. With input and guidance from the City of Brampton Parks Department and onsite staff support from the Brampton Clean City office, tree planting activities are easy to organize. With thorough pre-planning, tree plantings can be accommodated during the spring and fall seasons.

Trees can be purchased from the City of Brampton Parks Department. Installation of the trees can be done with the Parks Department and your group, or on your group’s behalf. Trees would be purchased as part of the bulk tree orders for fall or spring planting. Tree requests/payments must be received by no later than March 31st for spring planting, and by no later than July 31st for fall planting. Please allow Brampton Clean City two months notification as to when your group is planning a tree planting. (Staff assistance, materials and equipment are subject to availability.)

Tree Mulching

Did you know that mulching cuts down the number of weeds that compete with trees for vital nutrients and water, meaning that no chemical controls are needed?

With input and guidance from the City of Brampton Parks Department and onsite staff support from the Brampton Clean City office, Play-Clean partners can arrange and organize a tree mulching activity in their specific park.

Please allow Brampton Clean City two weeks notification as to when your group is planning a tree mulching activity, and we will ensure that your group receives all applicable materials and equipment, along with instructional and administrative support from the Brampton Clean City environmental education staff. (Staff assistance, materials and equipment are subject to availability.)

* It is highly recommended that all participants dress appropriately with thick soled,

closed-toe shoes, long pants and work gloves.

‘Manual Weed Pulling in the Park’ – Workshops & Community Projects

Pride and ownership in community sports venues begins at the roots! Why not organize a ‘manual weed pulling in the park’ workshop in your local park and learn the finer points of integrated pest management?

Please allow Brampton Clean City two weeks notification as to when your group is planning a weed pulling activity and we will ensure that your group receives all applicable materials and equipment, along with instructional support from the City of Brampton Parks Department and Brampton Clean City. (Staff assistance, materials and equipment are subject to availability.)

With thorough pre-planning, native flower and bulb planting initiatives can be accommodated during the spring and fall seasons. The ‘Ecoflag Movement’

The Ecoflag is a symbol of the commitment of sports enthusiasts worldwide to the environment. Sports enthusiasts know the importance of the natural ecosystem and its basic products, such as clean air, clean water, and nutritious food, to their health and performance. Many sports organizations, events and athletes are already working in different countries around the world to increase environmental awareness and action in order to protect themselves and their future generations. The Ecoflag has become the symbol of these actions and serves to unite the individual efforts of these different groups into a global initiative.

The Ecoflag is flown at sporting events - from school sports days to world championships - and is used in combination with environmental actions and messages to increase awareness among athletes and spectators alike. The goal of the ‘Ecoflag Movement’ is to unite over one billion sports enthusiasts worldwide and to make sports a leading area for environmental action.

Why fly the Ecoflag? While enjoying sports, we are reminded of the importance of clean air and water, and the effect that it has on our health and performance. In order for our future generations to be able to enjoy sports, Play-Clean supports:

• Teaching about the importance of all species and the essential interaction between the diversity of species in the global environment.

• Developing an economy that doesn’t just mass produce and waste, but utilizes human creativity and skill towards a high-value, low-impact society.

• Creating, developing and using sustainable energy and resources.

For more information on how Play-Clean partners can fly the Ecoflag at a sporting event, please contact Brampton Clean City.
