DEAR PEACEHEALTH SOUTHWEST FRIENDS AND DONORS,

It is my pleasure to take this opportunity to say thank you to Jean Rahn as she retires from her eight years of service to PeaceHealth.

When she arrived in 2005 as Executive Director of our Foundation, she led a capital campaign the magnitude of which this hospital and this community had not yet experienced. With the help of friends like you, we raised $53 million to help build the award-winning Firstenburg Patient Tower and provide support for departments and programs that serve our most vulnerable patients and families.

Under Jean’s leadership, many things were accomplished through community generosity. The Kearney Breast Center, the Holtzman Twins Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, 3-D mammography, the da Vinci surgical robot, programs serving underinsured patients at Family Medicine and PeaceHealth Medical Group, care for hundreds of end-of-life patients at Ray Hickey Hospice House, and much more.

It was with grace, humor, and hard work that Jean led these philanthropic endeavors. She inspired us all and we are very grateful. As Jean moves on to the next stage in her life, we wish her health, special time with family and friends, and the joys that retirement brings. Jean, thank you for all you’ve done to further excellence in local health care for this community!

You, our Foundation donors and friends, were integral to our success, and that won’t change. As we proceed into health care’s new frontier, we need your partnership even more. I look forward to introducing you to our new Foundation

director soon. In the meantime, Foundation team member, Tori Darnell, has accepted the role of Interim Director.

Thank you again for your support. Together we will continue working to ensure that the people of Southwest Washington have the kind of health care that helps keep this community the great place in which we live.

Sincerely,

Kaycee Wiita President, PeaceHealth Southwest Foundation Board of Directors

OH BABY! MR. UNION RAISES MONEY FOR FRAGILE INFANTS

Five worthy competitors stepped up to sing, dance, and charm their way to the title of “Mr. Union” in March. Adam Griffis, Pasha Hashemi, Trevor Larson, Jacob Nierenberg, and Stephen Reid raised funds from the community then competed in a talent show. Together with an anonymous donor, these talented, compassionate young men raised more than $5,600 for the babies and families in our Holtzman Twins Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU)!

Stephen Reid, a junior crowned Mr. Union, and Adam Griffis, the senior winner, used their significant talents to win the first Mr. Union Contest.

Melanie Fain, RN, manager of the Holtzman Twins NICU, and Cyndi Callahan, NICU Clinical Educator, share a moment of gratitude with Mr. Union contest organizer and Union High’s National Honor Society President Christiana Lee (center).

In August and September, 30 large painted HeArts, created by talented local artists, will be displayed throughout Southwest Washington. Sponsored by generous businesses and individuals, they will be auctioned off to the highest bidders at a glamorous gala featuring a four-course dinner and dancing on Saturday, September 21st, at the PeaceHealth Shared Services Center (former Nautilus building). This creative fundraising endeavor, The Beat Goes On…HeArts of Clark County will bring the next major advancement in heart and vascular excellence to this community.

“The Beat Goes On is a community-wide, creative project that pairs great art and heart health awareness with generous businesses and individuals,” said Connie Kearney, HeArts of Clark County Chair and PeaceHealth Southwest Foundation Board member. “The funds raised will help build our top notch heart and vascular surgical suite.”

Presented by:

Heart disease is the number one killer of men and women in the United States. PeaceHealth Southwest’s Heart & Vascular Center provides the best interventional cardiology and stroke care in the Vancouver/Portland area. The sole provider of interventional cardiology in Southwest

Washington, the Center consistently receives top honors for treating patients in the catheterization labs in 60 minutes or less, the gold standard.

“We are committed to continually furthering the quality and range of services we offer,” said Shaun Harper, MD, Medical Director of the Heart & Vascular Center. “The new surgical suite will save lives by accommodating both minimally-invasive and open procedures, and it will also position us well to serve patients with the next advancement in a few years. Building the Surgical Theater is the next step in patient care excellence.”

Complex procedures like endovascular surgery, minimally-invasive surgery that accesses regions of the body by inserting a catheter into large blood vessels, will be done in the new larger space. That extra space will eliminate the need to move patients to larger, more equipped operating rooms by accommodating the additional personnel required when patients undergoing minimally-invasive procedures unexpectedly require open procedure. Time saved can mean lives saved.

So “have a HeArt,” and make plans to join us in August and September for The Beat Goes On…HeArts of Clark County!

Stories like the one below are not uncommon for the ADAPT program. Individuals come to ADAPT feeling hopeless and leave feeling empowered. Patients come from all walks of life,

ethnic backgrounds and socioeconomic status. The ADAPT program seeks to relieve pain and suffering by providing for the untreated mental health needs of individuals in our community, with the goal of helping patients lead healthy, productive lives.

The ADAPT program is an alternative to inpatient psychiatric hospitalization. The program promotes the philosophy of time specific recovery (the average is two weeks) through psychiatric treatment provided daily

under the care of a psychiatrist and professional team. ADAPT develops a patient’s psychological coping skills to address problems of depression and anxiety and any coincident substance abuse so individuals can become productive members of the community.

ADAPTing to Life Affected by Mental Illness We are often asked by friends of the Medical Center what they can do to

help the most vulnerable in our community. At PeaceHealth Southwest,

we have mission programs that focus on the needs of our most vulnerable

citizens. One of these programs is our Behavioral Health outpatient

program called ADAPT, and we’d like you to get to know it better.

“ADAPT has truly saved my life. When I showed up here, I had just lost all hope and I wondered if this could work for me. I am truly proud to say it has. ADAPT has given me back my hope, my self-worth. I have been given so many useful tools to manage my illness and stay on the road to recovery. The staff was so helpful and so knowledgeable about what I was going through that recovery just doesn’t seem so far way. Thanks so much, ADAPT. Thanks for allowing me to understand my illness and cope with it. ”

–ADAPT scholarship recipient

About 31% of patients needing ADAPT services are uninsured, and the average out of pocket treatment cost is $2,204. Securing mental health services without insurance coverage is cost prohibitive for middle-class individuals and is nearly impossible for those living in poverty. Plus, untreated mental illness makes it difficult for individuals to find and keep employment.

PeaceHealth Southwest provides approximately $3 million for the Behavioral Health program each year, but the need in the community for mental health services goes far beyond what the Medical Center can provide. The ADAPT program is a fundraising priority for our Foundation. If you are interested in learning how you can help, please call us at 360-514-3106.

Raised Local, Stays Local!

PARDON OUR MISTAKEIn our spring issue, we mistakenly dropped a number from our Community Benefit report. The correct information is as follows:

A key part of PeaceHealth’s mission includes providing discounted or free care for vulnerable people. The partnership and generosity of our donors is vital in this effort as these numbers from fiscal year 2012 illustrate.

When you give to the PeaceHealth Southwest Foundation, you have the satisfaction of knowing that your dollars are impacting the lives of people right here in Southwest Washington. Your gift stays in our community to benefit the PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center program or department you specify. We’ve been your local hospital for 155 years, and you are our partner in the good health of our community.

In May, the Foundation awarded $122,600 in scholarships to more than 60 deserving young people and adults for education in health care fields. When you shop at our gift shops, you are contributing to a future of well-educated health care professionals.

Charity Care . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $43,740,836

Discounted or free services for patients with incomes of 400% or lower of the Federal poverty level.

Bad Debt . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . $56,425,540

Care provided for patients who do not qualify for charity care discounts but who did not pay for their services.

Each year, members from the Foundation Board and the Medical Center Board of Directors gather to honor individuals who have included PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center in their estate plans. Our Columbia Society members have made commitments to excellence in health care through their estate plans that will extend far beyond their lifetimes.

If you made a planned gift to the hospital in your will or estate plan, we hope you’ll plan to join us for our annual Columbia Society Luncheon on Tuesday, October 22, at the Heathman Lodge. Watch for your invitation in September!

PeaceHealth Tees Off in the Spirit of Unity! In March, nearly 300 donors, leaders,

and friends came together from seven

PeaceHealth hospitals in three states

for a few days of golf, camaraderie, and

fun in the Palm Springs area.

Event planner extraordinaire and Foundation Board member Linda Angelo organized a great day of golf followed by a dinner at the beautiful Indian Wells Resort.

The next evening featured an incredible cocktail party at The Vintage Club, which included a presentation from PeaceHealth President & Chief Mission Officer Alan Yordy and Kevin Lofton, President & CEO of Catholic Health Initiatives. “Despite the fact that our organizations didn’t affiliate, it was an incredible opportunity for our supporters to get their questions answered directly from these two health care leaders,” said Kaycee Wiita, PeaceHealth Southwest Foundation Board President. “Plus, it was just great fun to get together with so many people who care so passionately about great health in their communities.”

Honoring Great Physicians They are there when we need them. They listen,

comfort, and heal what ails us. Sometimes it’s hard to

know how to thank them in a meaningful way. One way is to make

a contribution through the Foundation to your physician’s area of

expertise or department at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center.

The following individuals were honored by their grateful patients for National Doctor’s Day in March. Many patients made generous donations to help further their physicians’ work.

“Dr. Alan Martin saved my life when he did my open heart

surgery. I am forever grateful. He gave me more precious

years with my wife and family.”
