for future Success...

Getting Started Curt Hanson, Founder

Part II: In August of 1974, we were invited to the John Deere New Equipment Intro-duction in Minneapolis. New for 1975 was a complete new line of 7000 Series corn planters replacing the old 1200 Series, (1240’s and 1250’s.) In 1974 John Deere in-troduced the first two round balers, the 400 and 500, followed in 1976 by the 410 and 510. Today, round baling is one of the most popular ways to harvest dry hay.

In 1973 when the John Deere Row-Crop tractors were replaced with new Genera-tion II tractors, they did not introduce new four-wheel-drive tractors. So in 1975, Deere introduced the all-new 8430 and 8630 four-wheel-drive tractors with Sound-Gard bodies. (*See new list price sticker of 4630 trac-tor built in 1974 on page 2.) Other equipment improvements made in 1975 were all trac-tors with Sound-Gard bodies came standard with air conditioning, which previously was optional. Also, cloth seats replaced vinyl seats in tractors and combines making your ride more comfortable.

We were starting our second year of busi-ness in 1975 and were very eager to make sure we sold a great deal of new equip-ment. In November of 1974, we sold two new 8430 four-wheel-drive tractors. In the spring of 1975, we sold approximately 30 new 7000 Planters. With the new machines came many sales as the Russian wheat sales

of 1973 and 1974 had raised the price of agricultural commodities. Farmers had money to spend.

In 1975 and 1976 the wait for new tractors was 12 months or more. All machinery was on allotment from suppliers. Our competition had a big back-log of orders too. Tractor com-petition came from International Harvester, Al-lis Chalmers, Oliver, Minneapolis Moline, Ford, Massey Ferguson, J.I. Case, Leyland Nuffield (from England), David Brown (from England), Steiger four-wheel-drive from North Dakota, Versatile four-wheel-drive from Canada and a few Big Bud four-wheel-drives from Montana. Today, many of these companies are gone or are a part of new companies such as Case New Holland or AGCO. (Continued on page 2)

Our machinery and combine competition was big too! In the Columbus area, many farmers had New Idea Uni-Harvesters, Gleaner combines, or 410 or 510 Massey combines. I can re-member trading in many Uni-Harvesters in the 1970’s. Other equipment built by New Idea included planters, pickers, and spreaders. Allis Chalmers had a full-line of equipment, as well as International Harvester, Oliver, J.I. Case, Ford and Massey Ferguson. Other short lines included New Holland, Gehl, Fox Harvesters, Hesston-Field Queen, Kasten, and Badger. Names of equipment not yet here in 1975 and 1976 were Kinze plant-ers, Kubota tractors, Deutz tractors, Claas Harvesters, Great Plains Equipment, Fendt tractors, Challenger, Krone, AGCO and CNH.

In 1975 business was good. We sold many different machines, including John Deere running gears (wagons) by the truck-loads, 15 to 20 square balers a year, pull type forage harvest-ers, and forage blowers. The big seller in planters was the 7000 4-row. This was because we had many 30-70 cow dairy farms in the area. A big dairy farm at the time was considered a farm with more than 150 cows. Many dairy farmers were spending big money on the new big Blue Silos, called Harves-tores.

In the fall of 1977, John Deere introduced what they dubbed the “Iron Horse” line of tractors. These were the 40 series tractors such as the 4040, 4240, 4440, 4640 and the largest row crop tractor ever built by John Deere, the new 4840, at 180 horsepower.

In 1977, John Deere had stopped producing agricultural trac-tors in Dubuque, Iowa, and converted that plant exclusively to industrial equipment production. The production of the 2040, 2240, 2440 and 2640 were all transferred to the Mannheim, Germany plant. Also in 1977, Deere introduced the first 6-cyl-inder utility tractor, the 2840 at 80 horsepower.

During this time, John Deere was rapidly expanding not only in the agricultural equipment business, but also into the con-sumer and commercial products business. They were very big into the snowmobile business with many models of new sleds. They also had started a John Deere factory-backed snowmo-bile race team from the Horicon factory! They had a complete line of snowmobile clothing and accessories. To build enthu-siasm for the snowmobile business, Deere produced a song about the John Deere snowmobiles and created a new slogan which is still in place today, “Nothing Runs Like a Deere.”

In 1977 and 1978, the agricultural business was booming due to ideal weather for crops and good farm prices. Our busi-ness, Mid-State Equipment, was entering its fourth and fifth year. In 1978, we had our first expansion. We built a ware-house building for storage that has since expanded into what we call our combine and machinery shop in Columbus. We were also able to install a blacktop driveway and expand our equipment lot with more gravel.

We hired our first salesman in February of 1978. Until that time my partner, Bob Groh, and I did all the sales work. We also hired our first full-time truck driver and bought our first semi delivery truck in 1978. Previously, Bob, our mechanic, and I did all the delivery work. Our total employment in 1978 was 11 people. This included three in sales and ownership, two in parts, five in service, and one in the office.

Gear Up 4 Fall Larry Schlender, Janesville Consumer & Commercial Sales

What an exciting year 2013 has been so far. After last year’s drought and a late spring, some wondered if their “pride and joy” of a lawn would ever return to its former splen-dor. Well, the rain came and the tempera-tures were conducive for growing grass, so we are rolling into autumn with some of the

most beautiful turf we’ve seen. With the lush turf comes the need to take care of it properly and have the right tools for the job. Fortunately, Mid State and John Deere are up to the task to keep your property the envy of the neighborhood.

New for 2013 is the John Deere Signature Series X700 class of tractors. The new X700 Series allows the operator to drive over the deck and not have to lift and slide out the deck from under the tractor. With the AutoConnect feature, there is no need to reach under the tractor to install or remove the drive-shaft. It does exactly what the trade name says; it automati-cally connects the deck driveshaft to the tractor. Slick!

Depending on the terrain or conditions you need to tackle, there are several drivetrain choices. Is your property fairly flat? Choose a two-wheel drive, front wheel steering model. Do you have a lot of trees and curvaceous landscape features? The two-wheel drive, all-wheel steering model may be the one for you. How about steep hills and ditches? Then the four-wheel drive, front wheel steering model is a great choice. Do you have a potpourri of property conditions? Four-wheel drive with all-wheel steering is the machine for you. Plus, you have two engines to choose from, gasoline or diesel. And when it seems like it couldn’t get any better John Deere is offering a $700 retail bonus AND 0% financing, now through October 25, 2013.

If the X700 is little too large for your place, the X300’s offer a regular lawn mower, all-wheel steer models (X304, X324,) or

models with hydraulic lift and power steering (X310,X360.) The X500 series offer all-wheel steer (X524,) or units with power steering and hydraulic lift, (X530 air cooled, X540 Liq-uid cooled.) There is a $500 retail bonus on any X500 series now through October 25, 2013.

If you want to get things done a lot quicker, choose from a res-idential zero-turn with a 42" deck to a commercial unit with loads of horsepower and a 72" deck, or anything in-between. Talk to your Mid-State sales representative to find the zero-turn that is tailor-made for you!

The new 1 Family line of John Deere compact utility tractors are the way to go for multitasking. The 1025R has Category 1 three-point hitch and 540 RPM PTO as standard equip-ment. With the ability to mount a loader, backhoe or dozens of three-point implements, this machine allows you to check chores off your list, FAST. The 1 Family offers a similar drive-over, AutoConnect mower deck set up as the Signature Series. With a $500 implement bonus for purchasing two implements with the tractor and 0% financing, owning a compact utility tractor couldn’t be any easier.

If you haven’t checked out John Deere Gator utility vehicles lately, then prepare yourself to get very excited. We have work machines to full-on sport performance units, all ready to get the job done and the adrenaline coursing through your veins. Choose from two-wheel or four-wheel drive, hauling two to four passengers. Four passenger Gators and the RSX850i sport unit get a $500 retail bonus and all Gators qualify for 2.9% for 60 months financing.

Give us a call or stop in if you have questions on pricing or equipment choices. We’re here to help make your purchasing experience an informed and positive one.

Final Tier 4 (FT4) Dean Pierce, Ag Sales Manager

John Deere has combined an innovative en-gine design and new technology to improve fuel economy and performance while meet-ing emissions regulations.

John Deere will be progressing to Final Tier 4 (FT4) Engines in 2014 for most of their

Tractors and Combines. Deere will continue to utilize the same engines we have today with EGR (Cooled Exhaust Gas Recirculation,) DOC (Diesel Oxilation Catalyst,) and DPF (Diesel Particulate Filter.) With the addition of SCR (Selective Catalyt-ic Reduction,) which utilizes DEF, (Diesel Exhaust Fluid,) these engines become compliant to Final Tier 4 emission standards.

A time line to the Final Tier 4 update will be as follows: 7R Tractors - January of 2014 8R Tractors - April of 2014 9R Tractors - Mid-Summer 2014 All 2014 Combines will be FT4 Compliant

The new FT4 System is called IEC which stands for Integrated Emissions Control. Deere’s Final Tier 4 Engine Solution will allow these new engines to use far less DEF than other brands.

Final Tier 4/Stage IV emissions regulations, which will be fully implemented by 2015, will take particulate matter and nitro-gen oxide emissions to near-zero levels.

Stay tuned for more Tier 4 information at our upcoming clinics and seminars.

Mid-State FarmSight Updates Phil Moskal, Integrated Solutions Manager

With the spring season freshly behind us, most are now focused on fall and the upcoming harvest. I would like to take us back for a moment. Let’s think about your fields. More specifically, try to focus on your field shape. Do any of you have perfectly square fields? You might have

one, maybe two if you’re lucky, but most of us have many odd shaped fields. With that in mind, how much seed do you think is wasted in overlap? The answer is probably a lot more than you think.

Typically when row clutches are added to a planter you will see a 3% to 8% savings in seed. With planting just over, that seed bill should be pretty fresh in your mind. What could you save if you cut 5% of your seed bill every year? It adds up pretty fast, doesn’t it?

You don’t need to have the latest and greatest planter to add row clutches. We can put row clutches on any ProShaft or chain drive planter. We have even put Tru-Count clutches on a Kinze planter pulled by a 7120 Case tractor. It is controlled through the customers’ GreenStar 2600 display. Depending on the age and size of the planter, it typically costs between $600 and $800 per row for automatically controlled clutches. If you don’t have a GreenStar 1800, 2600 or 2630 display, we can find and set up the display that suits your needs.

Here is an example of a setup: I will use a 1770NT 16 Row Planter, Vacuum, Pneumatic Down Force with Chain Drive. • 16 Row Clutch Kits - $6,600 • Control Module & Harnessing - $2,900 • Swath Control Activation - $2,700 Total - $12,200 (before installation labor)

This will include everything you need to hook your planter up to a 2600/2630 display. If you have an older planter with a Compu-Trak monitor we can also see if it is upgradable to the new SeedStar or SeedStar XP monitoring system.

Sticking to the planting theme, once the corn comes up it is time to side-dress and spray. Many of you have applicators and sprayers that are controlled by Raven monitors. If you already have a 2600 or 2630 display, that raven monitor can be replaced with a John Deere Rate Controller. With the Rate Controller you can quickly change between three pre-set rates or even run a prescription for variable rate nitrogen applica-tion. These systems are easily set up and calibrated using most of your existing equipment. The average sprayer or applicator can be converted for about $2,500.

Give me a call or e-mail if you have any questions regarding updates to your system.

Product Spotlight: Kuhn North America Mike Berkevich, Ag Sales Manager

Pictured: John Deere 7920 Tractor with a Kuhn Triple Mower at Mid-State Equipment, Columbus.

Mid-State Equipment strives to carry the very best quality and most innovative equipment. This includes the best in hay tools, TMR Mixers, manure handling equip-ment, and crop production equipment from Kuhn North America. Over the years, Kuhn has acquired other industry leaders to bring

the best equipment to you.

From its beginning, Knight Manufacturing Company, located in the Southern Wisconsin community of Brodhead, was known for their quality products such as Chopper Boxes and Manure Spreaders. In later years, they developed a line of TMR Mixers that became a staple for many dairy and cattle farms across the Midwest. As the dairy business became more focused on feed efficiency and production, dairy producers wanted more options for mixing different rations. New Knight products were developed to handle that need with the introduction of reel mixers. Later, vertical mixers came out to handle even larger amounts of coarse forage that many farms required.

Knight Manufacturing Company was one of the first compa-nies to offer a side discharge spreader, or slinger spreader. In the mid 90’s Knight acquired the Botec Company. Botec was known for producing a high-quality, four-auger mixer that was very popular with the western cattle feed lots. This acquisi-tion placed Knight at the top of the North American feed mixing Business.

In December of 2002 Kuhn purchased Knight Manufactur-ing. Kuhn, based in France, was already recognized as a world leader in the production of many hay tools. Most of the rota-ry discbine technology we use today goes back to the original design work done by the Kuhn Company. Since the purchase of the Knight Company, Kuhn has increased its product offer-ings to include speed rakes, high-capacity wheel rakes, as well as the Merge Maxx line of hay mergers.

In further developing their hay tool line, Kuhn Knight added the triple mower, or butterfly mower, in order to offer a high capacity mowing solution to dairy farmers. We have seen a successful hay mowing process for customers by utilizing their IVT tractors with Kuhn’s triple mowers.

In March of 2011 Kuhn acquired the Krause Tillage Company which was a leader in producing high quality tillage products. Their original plant is located in Hutchinson, Kansas. This merger added an American-made tillage company to the Kuhn North America product line.

We are very confident in Kuhn because they have many of the same values as we have, offering superior products, parts, and customer service to meet the ever-changing demands of our customers.

When do I use the Separator Grate Spacers on my STS Combine? Answer: Spacers should be used in corn and soybeans only. Remove spacers for all other crops. Place spacers in the storage position as shown in your operators manual.

How do I know where to set my HydraFlex Pressure for my 600 Series Flex Head? Answer: The higher the pressure reading on the display, the lighter the ground contact. Adjust per ground conditions.

Do I set the feeder house drum in the up or down position? Answer: The feeder house drum is set in the down position for all small grains and in the up position for corn.

When is the best time to grease the sheaves on my reverser gear case? Answer: Turn sheaves to the 12:00 and 2:00 position. The 12:00 fitting gets 5-8 pumps every 10 hours. The 2:00 position gets 2-3 pumps every 10 hours. This will prevent premature wear.

As we near the end of summer and head into fall, I’d like to take a few minutes to let you know what we have going on in parts and service.

Our Fall Harvest Sales catalog is scheduled to expire on August 16; however, we will be

extending the Catalog Sale prices through August 30 to allow anyone attending our Combine Clinics the opportunity to take advantage of these sale prices. If you do not have a copy of the catalog, stop in to any of our stores and get one from the Parts Department.

Another item that we have on sale through August is Stihl handheld power blowers. We are offering 5% off the retail price of all in-stock Stihl handheld power blowers. Power blowers are a great tool for cleaning dust and debris off your combine right in the field, which can help prevent the poten-tial for a fire.

As previously mentioned, we will be conducting our Annual Combine Clinics this month. We will be having two clinics this year. The first clinic will be Thursday, August 22 at our Janes-ville location and our second clinic will be Thursday, August 29 at our Columbus location. Both clinics will begin with lunch being served at noon followed by the meeting at 1:00 pm. Please mark your calendar and join us for an afternoon of education and training.

If you have not already scheduled your combine for our Mid-State Advantage Inspection program, now is the time so we can get it inspected and make necessary repairs before you are ready to go to the fields this fall.

As we head into September, we will once again be offering our Annual Fall JD Filter and Oil Sale. For the entire month, all John Deere Ag Filters will be 12% off the retail price and Select John Deere Oils will be on Sale. This is the time to stock up for the Fall Harvest Season. We will also be offering special pric-ing on John Deere Antifreeze.

We will also be offering 10% off Select In-Stock Lawn and Gar-den Tow Behind Implements during the month of September. Do you need a utility cart, sprayer, or aerator for your Lawn Tractor? Take advantage of the savings while supplies last. Later in September, we will be introducing our Fall Lawn and Garden Service Specials, our Winter Change-Over Specials, and our Winter Storage Program. Watch your mail or get more information at any Mid-State location.

We will be offering Sunday morning parts deliveries from John Deere during the harvest season beginning Sunday, Septem-ber 29 and continuing each Sunday through November 9. This will be available at our Columbus and Janesville locations only. If you need parts ordered from another location, just let your parts salesperson know what you need on Saturday, and they can order the parts to be available for you to pick up at either Columbus or Janesville on Sunday.

We will also be extending our store hours this fall for the harvest season. As we get closer to harvest, we will make the decision on when to begin our fall hours based on the start of harvest. Check back with your local Mid-State store periodi-cally for their Fall Harvest Hours or check our website.

I leave you with one last thought as we head into fall harvest, always be thinking Safety First!

Bobcat Utility Vehicles Rhonda Davis, Bobcat Sales Manager

Bobcat Company is break-ing new ground in the utility market with the great performance and productivity of the two new utility vehicles, the 3600 and 3650. These

units are all hydrostatic drive, with the 3650 excelling over the 3600 by having attach-ment capabilities. This is the first UTV with the capability to operate front mounted PTO attachments.

These two units are great for the homeown-er that wants to ride the trails or to simply maintain their personal property. The ve-hicles are also designed to handle and haul more material for grooming commercial properties. They are the first utility vehicle in the Bobcat lineup to offer cabs with heat and air conditioning.

The wide range of attachments consist of snow blades, angle brooms, box mounted sprayers, buckets, mowers, pallet forks and snowblowers. Another key feature is the diesel engine that will automatically shut itself down if it experiences high engine coolant temperature, low engine oil pres-sure or high hydraulic oil temperature. Operating these new utility vehicles is simple. Operators move forward or in re-verse simply by pressing their toe or heel on the travel control pedal. This design offers steady torque to the wheels in high load ap-plications for more pulling power. The new multi attachment x-change has a lift height of two feet and an operating capacity of 500 pounds, making clearing snow with blowers and blades fast and easy.

These utility vehicles also have inde-pendent front dual A-Arm suspension with rear DeDion suspension that ties the two rear wheels together for hauling heavy loads and providing a smoother ride. The new family of Bobcat Utility Ve-hicles is a great match for farms and homeowners with acreage, construc-tion and landscape contractors, and facility and maintenance professionals of all types.

Standard model utility vehicles are also available including the 3200 Gas, 3400 Gas, and 3400 Diesel Utility Vehicles.

The 3200 Gas unit is a two-wheel drive only unit great for the homeowner. These come with four-wheel drive and offer either gas or diesel engines. The 3400’s are more durable and rugged to help you get more work done in less time. This machine has a bed load ca-pacity of 1100 pounds and a bed load height of just 31 inches, which makes it easier to load heavy items.

We have a large selection of used Bob-cat equipment in stock as well. You can view our selection online or give your salesperson a call. You can also visit www.bobcat.com for more infor-mation on all Bobcat has to offer. 8

RENTAL Spotlight: The Trencher Durlin Knuth, Prairie du Sac Rental

The Trencher is a great tool to get jobs done professionally, and in an efficient time frame. These are perfect for do-it-yourself homeowner projects as well as large contracting jobs. Mid-State Rentals has a variety of trenchers to suit your needs, available for rent at all locations.

The walk behind trencher is perfect for small projects around the home such as digging new water lines and running wires, installing drain tiles, and laying bricks or pavers for landscap-ing.

Several models of trenchers are available. The Ditch Witch brand has been synonymous with trenchers for over fifty years. We recently added the Barreto Walk-Behind Trencher to our availability at select locations. This model has the ca-pability of trenching six inches wide and up to 36 inches deep. The Barreto is very easy to handle with hydraulic steering and hydrostatic drive. Other models for our skid steer go up to a 48 inches depth.

The Bobcat MT52 Walk-Behind Skid-Steer with trencher at-tachment can handle rough terrain and will work best for large property owners and farmers. With more drive power,

you will never feel like you are pushing or pulling the machine. The equipment does the hard work for you. There is an op-tional ride on platform ideal for long trenches on flat ground. The MT52 can handle a number of other attachments like the vibratory plow and flat edged 36 inch bucket. If you do not need a wide trench, the vibratory plow will split the ground and allow you to quickly bury wire, small tubing, and small PVC pipe.

Bobcat offers hundreds of attachments for Skid-Steers. The trenching attachment is a superb tool for anyone who owns a Skid-Steer. Mid-State offers these attachments for sale or rent. This tool offers the deepest trenching capabilities that we offer making it ideal for large trenching projects. A Skid-Steer also allows you to get into a more rugged terrain than the MT52. So, whether you need to run a cable to your house, or create new drainage in a cornfield, Mid-State Equip-ment has you covered.

Trenching Tips:

1. Before you trench, don’t forget to call Digger’s Hotline. It can become very costly & dangerous if you cut a wire.

2. Mark the ground with spray paint about 4' from the trench you can see where to back up.

3. The Power Rake works great for closing a large trench & getting the ground ready for seed. 11

Mid-State Equipment is a family owned dealership. To the Hansons and Frodels, this means treating customers and employees with kindness and respect. This also means that employees at Mid-State care about how their customers do. We want to be partners to help you achieve your successes. Being a family owned business has been, and will continue to be, a very important trait in the dealership because the values instilled in all employees and the way day to day business is done all centers around this. Curt and Linda have paved the way of how business is done, and have passed down their values to their children, Bryan Hanson and Chris Frodel. Bryan and Erin Hanson have shared these values and traditions with their daughters, Hannah and Aubrey, and Chris and Scott Frodel will begin sharing these val-ues with the newest addition to the family, their daughter, Mia. So, from the Hanson and Frodel families to yours, best wishes in the coming harvest season. Keep the tradition of family and farming growing.
