for future Success...

Getting Started Curt Hanson, Founder

Part III: Continuing with the changes and challenges of the 1980’s……

In 1979 John Deere had a major machinery announcement introducing the “20” series combines, the 4420, 6620, 7720, and a new larger 8820 machine. Other new machines were four-wheel drive tractors; the 8440 and 8640, replacing the 30-Series four-wheel drive tractors. Customers quickly accepted these new machines, and we had record sales of the new 20-Series combines and 40-Series four-wheel drive tractors.

We started to sell 8820 combines with 8-row corn heads. These were the largest combines being built in 1980.

The warehouse building we built in Colum-bus was turned into a combine repair shop to make room for the new larger combines.

Business was good and growing. With that growth came more demands on the busi-ness, and we were hiring more employees.

In the fall of 1980, my partner, Bob Groh, asked if Linda and I would be interested in buying his half of the business. This was a huge decision for us, as our business was just six years old and had many growing pains. With the financial backing of our bank, Linda and I became the sole owners of Mid-State in December of 1980.

In 1980, John Deere introduced the first mechanical front tractor with sound gard cab. This was the 2940 tractor, built in Germany. At this time we were getting a lot of competition from foreign built tractors with mechanical front wheel drive. Duetz was becoming very popular. John Deere only had front wheel drive available for the utility trac-tors built in Germany, which included up to the 2940.

In 1980, John Deere had just finished building a new tractor factory in Waterloo, Iowa. This large factory would provide Deere with the ability to double production.

In 1982, times were changing. The interest rate I was paying to borrow money was as high as 16%. Business was slowing down and all profits, if any, were going towards interest. The high interest rates were also a problem for our customers.

Farm expenses plus 16%-20% interest on loans were taking a toll on farmers. Land prices were falling, and there was no expansion on the farms. Farmers had to manage by repair-ing their current equipment or buying used.

John Deere introduced a new line of tractors in August of 1982. These were tractors we had all asked for: the new 50-Series. (Continued on Page 2)

For the first time, we had a mechanical front wheel drive row crop tractor. It also had a new 15-speed power shift transmis-sion. They also introduced new 4-wheel drive tractors, the 8450, 8650, and a new very large 8850 with an all new John Deere V-8 engine. We delivered the first 8850 in late Novem-ber 1982. The new 50-Series were great tractors and many farmers were interested in the mechanical front wheel drive models. We held many field days to let farmers see and drive them. They loved the new tractors.

Sales were very good in 1983. We sold many tractors, but the farm economy was getting worse. We had record crop yields for two years in a row and our dollar was strong due to extreme high interest rates. As a result, exports were down. We had a glut of agricultural products. The government was loaning low rate money to build storage buildings for all the unsold crops.

In 1984, with storage bins full, a huge program was an-nounced called PIK, or “Payment In Kind”. This program offered farmers warehouse receipts for crops if they would not plant any crops that year.

For farm supply companies, this was a real disaster. This meant virtually no farm business for a year. No planter or combine sales, and no seed or fertilizer sales. What kept us going were our dairy and livestock farms.

John Deere announced in 1984 that they were exiting the snowmobile business. They had started building snowmo-biles in 1971 in Horicon, Wisconsin. This came as a surprise to many customers. John Deere did not want to invest more in the development of new snowmobiles as it was a limited market. Instead, they planned to expand their mowing and turf business.

By 1985 and 1986, we were in the middle of a huge agricul-tural depression. Many farms were being sold or given back to lenders. Many farmers were forced to exit farming. Many farm supply businesses and manufacturers were closing. Names like Allis Chalmers, International Harvester, Oliver, New Idea, and Minneapolis Moline went away by the late 1980’s.

Many towns around southern Wisconsin lost dealerships and farm supply companies. You can probably name several in Madison, Beaver Dam, Horicon, Hartford, Janesville, and many more.

In 1986, at the urging of John Deere, we expanded our main store and constructed a new lawn and garden showroom and shop. We also added a larger parts area. This allowed us to have more room for agricultural parts and service, plus expand our sales in the lawn and garden and turf business.

We survived the 1980’s with hard work, loyal employees and loyal customers. Thank you!

Better times and growth beginning in 1989… to be continued.

1986 Columbus- Addition for Lawn & Garden Sales and Service

RENTAL Spotlight: Don Neuburg, Jackson Rental

Winter season is fast approaching and so is the Christmas season. It’s time to start thinking about putting up Christmas deco-rations.

Using a ladder in cold snowy conditions can be very dangerous and possibly expensive.

One slip off the roof or ladder can result in broken bones and lost time in work.

Renting one of our towable lifts is a very safe way to reach trees or roofs to put decorations up, clean out the gutters, or fix any ice damage that can happen in winter. Our towable

lifts are battery operated and very easy to set up. Lifts can reach to heights of 45 feet and can reach out about 27 feet from the primary unit. They can also rotate 360 degrees. The lifts are large enough for two people to work in and are controlled from either the ground or man basket. They can be towed by any half ton or larger pickup or SUV with towing capacity of 4000 pounds.

The cost is $200 per day, a weekend rate of $300, or $700 for a week. If it is necessary to move around a property more, the towable lift may not be the right tool for you. However, we have other lifts available that range from 40 to 60 feet that are self-propelled. Don’t wait, reserve your lift today!

Get Ready for Snow John Laubenstein, Jackson Consumer & Commercial Sales

As I peeled off another month on the cal-endar, I can’t believe we are at the start of

the winter season. Moisture was so abundant during the past three seasons it made time fly, and made for a busy year at Mid-State Equipment.

In the lawn and garden department, John Deere just an-nounced their Green Fever sales event, which is the biggest sale of the year. With special financing offers and dollars off, it has never been easier to get into the seat of a John Deere.

All John Deere X300 series Lawn tractors are on sale for the Green Fever event. With old man winter just around the cor-ner, we can equip an X300 with a 44” two-stage snow blower that will move the mounds of snow predicted for the upcom-ing winter months.

For the larger driveway, move up to the X500 series garden tractor with powerful 22-24 horsepower motors. Equip it with a 44” or 47” snow blower and get power steering and automatic lift for easy operation with most models. For addi-tional comfort, add a cab to stay out of the cold weather and blowing snow.

Need to move snow in even larger areas? Take a look at the X700 series garden tractor with blowers as wide as 54 inches. This series can include options like shaft drive, a water-cooled gas or diesel engine, hard side cab with heat, electric wipers and four-wheel drive.

All X-Series models have special Green Fever financing available, 0% for 12 months. If you prefer a lower payment, we also have 4.9% available for four years. Of course, like all John Deere equipment, year round versatility is standard. Mowing, bag-ging, fertilizing and hauling are just a few of the tasks you will be able to handle. Plus, we are proud to say that the X-Series tractors are made in Hori-con, keeping jobs in Wisconsin.

John Deere compact utility tractors are the industry’s best with easy to remove loaders, mowers, and blowers. These utility tractors can handle just about anything with options like a factory installed, year-round cab with heat and air con-ditioning, four-wheel drive, and a large 59” snow blower. You may choose to equip a tractor with a loader and an optional hydraulic-turn front snow blade. 0% for 60 month financing makes these very affordable.

The other piece of equipment waiting to be unleashed is the John Deere Gator utility vehicle. Use this machine for maintenance around your property, hauling, or plowing snow. Power steering and snow tracks are available for great flotation and traction during Wisconsin Winters making this machine a true workhorse. Special Green Fever financing is in place to get you a low monthly payment.

We’ll provide you with informed and honest answers to your questions as well as service and parts to keep your purchase running for many winters to come. Stop in and see what’s new for the winter season at one of our seven Mid-State Equipment locations.

Let it snow... With Mid-State Equipment, you’ll be ready!

Disk ripper Options– Fall Tillage Dave Schmidt, Salem Ag Sales

At this time of year, many of you are busy with fall work, and it is a good time to review your tillage program. Ask yourself a few questions about fall tillage: What am I trying to accomplish? Are my current tillage tools accomplishing those tasks to my satis-faction? What could be improved?

We do fall tillage for a variety of reasons, all leading up to next spring planting. Some examples of what we want tillage to do are: size residue, relieve compaction, incorporate residue or manure, encourage decomposition of residue, control erosion, and increase air and water levels in the soil. The list could go on.

There are a wide range of tillage tools available today that do a lot of different things, and Mid-State handles several brands of quality equipment to meet your specific needs. Let’s take a look at some of the current disk ripper ma-chines and what they are meant to accomplish.

The new John Deere 2720 disk-ripper disk features a disk gang in front, deep ripper shanks in the middle, and a disk gang in the rear. It has very high weight per disk blade, (around 100 lbs. per blade more than the 512 it replaces,) to handle heavy residue and hard soil up to 6" deep. Most configu-rations can have a chopper-reel leveler in the back. The reel helps to reduce the size of dirt clods, level, and pin resi-due into the soil for good decomposition. Controlled hydraulically, you can vary the down pressure of the reel, (similar to a no-till drill,) let it “float” or raise it off the ground. The combination of the rear disk gang and the chopper reel leaves a very level surface for a deep till machine. The ripper shanks are para-bolic style which create good shattering action and are spaced 30" apart. The 2720 is best at cutting up residue, shatter-ing the hard pan to as deep as 15", and leaving a level soil profile. In corn stalks, it will typically leave 25%-35% residue cover. Larger 9 and 11 shank models have a three section flex-fold frame. This machine is impressive in how it can till aggressively but still leave the ground level. New this year, it has received great reviews from those of you who saw it work at our tillage days and have purchased one. Available sizes include 12.5'- 17.5' – 22.5' – 27.5'.

The John Deere 2700 disk ripper offers a different design. It features two rows of individually mounted disk blades with deep ripper shanks behind, and a disk style leveler on the back. While it also cuts up residue and shatters the hard pan like the 2720, it has some key differences. The disk frames are set in an X-type configuration and are hydraulically adjust-able from a maximum depth of four inches to completely out of the ground. An active down-pressure system allows the operator to control the amount of pressure put on the frames up to 1200 psi. The rear disk lever is hydraulically adjustable, (can adjust completely out of the ground,) and can vary the surface profile on the go to leave it rough for maximum drying and runoff control or leave the profile smooth for minimum seedbed preparation in the spring. With the front disks and rear leveler raised up it can leave as much as 70% of residue on the surface. With the disks down it will typically leave 30-40% of corn stalk residue. So, the 2700 gives you the ability to adjust the job on the go and be more or less aggressive as

conditions or crops change, even in the same field. Plus, the individual disk blades are easy to change if you break one. Available sizes

include 12.5'- 14' - 17.5' – 18', some with 24" shank spacing, some with 30”.

If your soils need all the loosening and fracturing they can get, consider the new Landoll 2410 or 2430 Weather-

proofer I disk ripper. With ripper shanks spaced closer together at 24" spacing, the

Weatherproofer I will shatter more of the soil profile.

It features fixed disk gangs in front of the

ripper shanks and offers a choice of optional rear at-

tachments. Choose from a 3-bar coil tine harrow,

a chopper reel or for the most filling and leveling, the combination of both. The

reel or combo attachment can be raised hydraulically in sticky conditions. The 2410 models with 6, 7 or 9 shanks

are a rigid frame. The 3-section 2430 models with 11 or 13 shanks fold to a narrow 16' transport width. Available sizes include 12'-14'-18'-22'-26'.

These units are just a few of the tillage tools available from Mid-State Equipment. If your current units are not meeting your needs, we can help you match the right tools for your farm. Call or stop in to see what we have in stock for immedi-ate use or learn about early order programs for next year.

Harvest AMS Update Phil Moskal, Integrated Solutions Manager

As Harvest winds down, I’d like to take the time to introduce our new member of the Mid-State Equipment AMS Department. Eric Kell has joined us and will be serving the Northern portion of Mid-State’s terri-tory. He will be based primarily out of the Jackson and Columbus stores, and will also

cover Watertown as needed. Eric has worked at Mid-State in the parts department since May and made the transition to the AMS department in the middle of September. If you are located at one of the stores now covered by Eric and you have been working with me in the past, you can still continue to do so. If you need immediate assistance and cannot reach me, Eric can be reached at 608-393-0377.

For those of you who made it to either the Janesville or Columbus Tillage Days, you may have seen the small Quad-Copter flying around. This is the newest addition to our technology offerings, with the primary purpose being crop scouting. This small aerial vehicle comes equipped with a high-definition camera and a set of First Person Viewer goggles which enables you to see what it sees while flying overhead. With this technology, you can get an overall view of your field and may be able to pinpoint some trouble spots. You can further investigate those areas by walking portions of the field. This tool is to aid you in the process of scouting your crop and should enable you to do a more comprehensive analysis of your fields. There could also be some other uses

Picture Above: Drone/ Quad-Copter. Below: Harvest at Mark Schroeder’s Farm, taken with Mid-State’s Quad-Copter.

for this quad-copter, like checking irrigation nozzles, finding down crop and checking pastures. If you are interested in seeing how it performs up close, call me at 608-290-6722, or you can see it at our Parts Expo at the Alliant Energy Center on January 22nd.

Speaking of the Expo, with us having the larger one day format, we will be highlighting many AMS products. This will be a good chance to see exactly what Mid-State has to offer in the way of Precision Ag products. Some of the product offerings we will be showing are, JDLink, Remote Display Ac-cess, Dry Rate Controllers, the AgLeader Compass display, and Field Connect among others. There will also be a chance to “test drive” the new 2014 7R/8R Gen4 CommandArm display. Mark your calendars, and be sure to attend on January 22, 2014.

Product Spotlight: wACKER nEUSON Bryan Hanson, Co-Owner

Some of you may have noticed a couple new pieces of equipment on display at your nearest location such as a compact wheel loader and self-propelled dumper. These are produced by Wacker Neuson. If you have ever rented from our rental depart-ment, particularly to remove or install

concrete, you are familiar with Wacker. We have carried Wacker concrete saws, breakers, trowels, pumps and other small construction related items for many years. Wacker has proven to be a very tough and reliable brand.

Wacker, much like John Deere, was started by a blacksmith, Johann Christian Wacker in the mid 1800’s. Wacker pioneered the powered rammer, a major innovation in concrete and soil compaction. Wacker’s first foreign affiliate for product sales and production was opened in 1957 in Hartford, Wisconsin. In 1986, the factory in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin was rebuilt, and is now the North American Headquarters. Through acqui-sitions and mergers, Wacker has evolved into Wacker Neuson, a global manufacturer of light and compact equipment.

We have expanded our lineup at Mid-State Equipment to include Wacker Neuson compact products. We see a market

for Wacker, especially for the customer with applications too large for a skid loader but not quite large enough to justify a full-size loader. The articulating Wacker loaders have good visibility, are easy to access, have less tire scuffing, and are able to reach higher than a typical skid loader. Another niche product offered by Wacker Neuson is the wheeled dumper. These dumpers have the ability to easily move mate-rial around in a confined area. They are economi-cal tools for on the job transportation of medium volumes of material.

Check out our Wacker Neu-son product lineup today. Visit www.midstateequip-ment.com and click on the Wacker Neuson logo, or ask your salesperson for more information.

Why should I have my Combine, Tractor or Chopper inspected by Mid-State? Answer: When our service personnel look at a machine, they not only look for needed repairs, but are also checking for issues that we see in manufacturer bulletins. Our goal is to keep your machine in the field when you need it. By performing the inspections, your machine also qualifies for the Mid-State Advantage Program.

Any Antifreeze will be fine in my Bobcat, right? Answer: Bobcat Skidsteer and Track Loaders are factory filled with Propylene Glycol (PG.) The old “Green” antifreeze is Ethylene Glycol. Mixing the two types makes it impossible to test the freezing point. Using a pre-mix antifreeze gives you the correct freeze point, and also has distilled water to keep harmful deposits from your cooling system. If you have further questions, consult you opera-tor’s manual or give us a call.

When should Coolant be tested or changed in Equipment? Answer: Coolants, depending on brand and installation, can start to lose its protective qualities after about two years of use. This is regardless of the amount of time the machine is used. Coolant should be tested yearly to make sure the temperature range is able to go low enough for winter use or storage. John Deere Cool Gard offers five year protection when it is changed over to that coolant. Check your coolant annually to prevent costly repairs. If you have any other questions, don’t hesitate to call your local Mid-State service or parts department.

How fast should I run my John Deere 600 Series Platform? Answer: The correct backshaft speed would be 510 to 530 RPM on high idle with no load.

PArts & Service Jay Goninen, Corporate Aftermarket Manager

It’s scary to think that we’re almost wrapped up with harvest and headed into the deep freeze of winter. To help you pre-pare for this, I’d like to inform you of some of the deals we’ve got coming up to help you make it through.

On the service side of things, we are offering our annual Mid-State Advantage Tractor and Combine Winter Inspection Program to make sure that your machine runs as strong, or stronger, than it did for this year’s harvest. It’s a really great program and I encourage you to call the Service Manager at your location to discuss if the Advantage Program would work for you. In short, this program puts you on our “VIP” program and has some great benefits.

For those of you with machines smaller than combines, we’ve got a special program for Lawn Tractors as well. Sign up to get your Lawn Tractor in for a winter service inspection at any Mid-State Equipment location and we’ll store your lawn mower over the winter months for only $50. We also offer a Winter Changeover program that puts your mind at ease by swapping out your mower deck and installing your snow blade or blower. You have the option to bring your lawn trac-tor in for the changeover and service, or our service team can come to you.

We are also running some specials on the parts side of things that you need to know about as well. For November, we are running a pre-season sale on Bale Wrap that will be the best deal for Bale Wrap all year. John Deere Fuel Protect is also going to be running 5% off discount. These deals along with many others are detailed in our Mid-State Equipment calen-dar, at our physical locations, and on our website.

One last reminder, if you’re anything like me and are either not very good at Holiday shopping or if you like to wait for the last minute, we’ve got you covered. Visit our stores or check out www.greentoys4u.com for all of the John Deere toys and apparel that you could dream of. Our stores are fully stocked for the season!

I hope you have all had a safe and profitable Harvest and would like to wish you and your families the best as we head into the Holiday Season.
