“BORING” ANGEL PLAN CRASHES TO EARTHMany of our local churches have angels in their roofs. Most were put there by the Victorians to replace much earlier figures which were torn down in times of religious upheaval. You can see some of them in Cotton and many more in Woolpit.In Bacton all we have are the diagonal sawn off ends to show where the angels were once attached.It is nearly three years since the Friends of St. Mary’s first came up with a plan to replace 18 figures. Our idea was that local people or organisations would sponsor an angel to commemorate a loved one, or an event. Our then rector, Liz Varley, loved the plan and the parochial church council which is responsible for the maintenance of St. Mary’s was in favour too.The Friends are not a religious group: we believe St. Mary’s is a vital part of our village history and we raise money to keep it in good repair for generations to come. However we thought that for once we might add something – to leave the church more beautiful than we found it.To get our angels flying, we needed to convinced the Diocesan Advisory Committee which is responsible for the care of churches. At first they seemed quite keen, suggesting that we might have musical angels or comical angels and asking us to enlarge the planned figures and to undertake research in other churches with angel roofs.We chose a local sculptor, Rob Lewis from Haughley. Rob has worked at Windsor Castle, Downing Street, Bury Cathedral and New York Cathedral, but had also restored angels in his local church. However after many months of discussion, the enthusiasm of the DAC waned. They, along with English Heritage and the Church Buildings Council felt that the plan was two ambitious. They hinted that they might consider two angels.We then put in a plan for two figures – one to be sponsored by the Friends with an image of caring for the church, and the other to commemorate thethousands of children who have passed through Bacton Community Middle School.

Dear Editor, What a relief, after 70 years, to know the strange rumblings and noises I’ve heard under my George III Cottage in Wyverstone are the Underground Railway workings! Following another DAC suggestion, we organised a competition so the pupils could share some of their angel design ideas.The two heritage organisations were prepared to support this scaled-down plan. However at this point the DAC insisted on setting up a commissioning panel. The DAC nominees told us that our angel plan was boring. They did not like our designs and did not want to spend time discussing how we might alter them because they wanted something different: a design competition for a 21st century artwork, not necessarily a sculpture, nor wood, nor a recognisable angel, nor on the roof. We already had our idea and our artist and this was light years away from our original plan. The Friends, who would have raised the money, felt unable to proceed. Unfortunately this means the school children of Bacton will not have their commemorative angel. We are all disappointed that the DAC was unable to share our vision, or to see that sometimes traditional figures can be part of the heritage of the church – just like modern art. In last months article I mentioned re-cycling and uses in the garden. I have a suggestion if you have soft fruit canes or bushes and you want to protect the crop from being eaten by the birds. Put bamboo canes around the area you want to protect, up-turn large plastic bottles over the top of the bamboo canes and then spread green garden netting over the bottles. The netting moves easily over the bases of the bottles and dosen't catch on the ends of the canes. Also the wind will gently move the bottles, which will also help to distract the birds and keep them away.Another good idea for using up any old C.Ds you don't watch any more, is to tie a string on them, and tie the C.Ds on the inside of your newly formed fruit cage. They move and when the sun catches them they shine in all sorts of colours which also distracts the birds.I have now dead-headed all my daffodils. If you keep the spent heads on the stalks they tend to make a lot of seed and you need all the energy going back into replenishing the bulb for next years flower display. However, with the winds we've had this year, the daffs tend to get blown all over the place and can look very scruffy. To overcome this problem I go to a Pound Shop and purchase a large bag of medium size strong elastic bands Then, each group of Daffs, I twist the leaves gently, double them back on themselves and slip an elastic band over them. It keeps them in perfect order and very neat and tidy. You still need to keep the green leaves of the Daffs because they are taking in all the suns rays and light which is re-energizing the bulbs for next year. This action is known as photosynthesis. After all the green leaves have finally turned brown its just a matter of clearing away all the old debris and you can recover the elastic bands.I am in the process of developing a new bed for extra colour in the garden. I have planted two varieties of Heuchera, Frosted Violet and Cherry Cola. The different leaf colours are quite stunning. Also around them I've introduced Erysimum, Blowes Mauve, whic are just coming into flower should look quite nice when they become established.The Lupins I planted last year have been protected by a ring of horticultural grit placed around the base of the plants. This keeps the slugs away, they don't seem to be able to get across the grit to attack the plants.It’s the time of year now when regular cutting of the lawn is required. Certainly once a week if not twice will keep it looking very nice and well looked after. Happy Gardening Norman Parcell

The April meeting began with the Exhortation and Silent Tribute.It was very pleasing to see 20 members in attendance with no apologies for absence.The Chairman Sandra Welham welcomed everyone wishing them an enjoyable evening.The Treasurer Ann Gipson said during her report that the recent sponsored Beard Shave had realised a grand total of £1,032 which is very satisfactory.Our next project is the Lucky Dip Stall at Bacton Fayre in August and prizes wrapped in blue for males and pink for females and marked child or adult are being collected by Cynthia Elmer.The Branch is not in the village hall for the next 3 meetings as we have a meeting at James Collins Plants at Cotton in May, a garden meeting at Squirrel’s Hall, Wattisfield in June and an outing to Risby Barns in July.The next ‘B’ Group meeting is to be held at Red Gables, Stowmarket in the Garden Room on Thursday, 18th June.The speaker for the evening was Glynis Penton who showed the ladies how to create 6 simple flower arrangements using mainly garden foliage and supermarket flowers. Helpful hints were given and the lovely results were kindly placed in the draw.Vice Chairman Maureen Gardiner gave the vote of thanks saying Glynis had made it look so easy.

Bacton & District RBL Women’s Section at the Bacton FayreBacton & District RBL Women’s Section competitions are open to everyone and this year are a Suffolk Harvest Cake and a Knitted Cheshire Cat Bookmark. The instructions for the bookmark are a bit long but we thought the finished items would look attractive in different colours and they are very easy to make.

The Parish Council met on 27 April 2015. The report on the meeting held on 18 May 2015 will be included in the July edition as the copy deadline is prior to the May meeting.Police ReportThere had been one crime reported since the last meeting which involved the theft from a shop where the offender conned £80 from a local shop assistant, the investigation is on-going.Parish Cemetery FeesThe council carried out a survey to compare the Bacton Parish Council fees with neighbouring parish and Stowmarket cemeteries and as a result has implemented an increase which will help offset the cost of maintaining the cemetery. Full details are available on the Parish Council website.Planning ApplicationsThe Parish Council supported the planning application at the Bull Inn, Church Road to demolish an outbuilding, repair a boundary wall and erect a new 1.875m boundary wall reusing the bricks from the outbuilding.Mary HawkinsMary Hawkins has retired from the Parish Council. Mary had been a Parish Councillor for 24 years and at the meeting was thanked for her service to the Parish.

District CouncillorThe Chairman thanked Sarah Stringer for her help over the years as the District Councillor for Bacton.Next Meeting:The next Parish Council meeting will be held on Monday 15 June 2015 at 7.30 in the Village Hall, Bacton. The agenda will be posted on the three notice boards in the village and will also be available on the Parish Council website -http://bacton.onesuffolk.net/.

The Annual Parish Council meeting was held on the 13th May, Councillor Peter Gibbs was elected Chairman of the Council and Councilor Sarah Wenban was re-elected as Vice-Chairman.

As there were only five candidates for the election all candidates were elected unnaposed. This means that there are two vacancies on the Council. If you are a resident of Cotton and would like to make a contribution to the village and be considered for one of the vacancies please contact the Parish Clerk or one of the Councillors preferably before the end of June.The next scheduled Parish Council meeting is on Wednesday 8th July when the matter will be discussed.

The May meeting began with Chairman Diane Gladders welcoming visitors Carole and Adrian.Diane has put together an outing leaving Bacton Village Hall at 9 am on Saturday, 20th June calling first at Westacre Nursery followed by Castle Acre for coffee/lunch. This will be followed by a visit to Gooderstone Water Gardens for 2 1/2 hours. Picnics may be taken if desired and Treasurer Trish Lawrence needs a deposit of £10.The evening outing on 14th July is to The Carnivorous Nursery at Stoke Ash at 6 pm followed by a meal costing £10.95 at The White Horse, Stoke Ash at 7.30 pm.A theatrically inspired evening’s entertainment then followed in the form of “Mr. Potter” whose real name is Bryan Thurlow. Mr Potter began with tales of the Coronation of King George V in 1911, going on to his first gardening job and WW1 and the consequences of this for himself and others around him. A few horticultural hints were given along the way such as putting crushed Rosemary in the rinsing water after washing hair.Diane thanked Bryan and said it was a very different way of life in those days.Monthly Raffle winner was Will Gray.Monthly Competition winners:A Vase of Perennials.1. Our May 11th meeting took me rather by surprise when I arrived to find three large tables covered in interesting plants and flowers. This was an unwelcome sight for me and my hayfever but fortunately I don’t get it badly and, with the doors of the Village Hall open, it all turned out to be fine. I shouldn’t have been surprised as I knew that our speaker was to be Anne Etheridge talking about plants for different areas of the garden - ‘Light and Shade’. We have many shady areas in our garden so I was keen to discover how I could make them more interesting.Anne used to work for the Blooms at Bressingham, (a most appropriately named family!) and she was very knowledgeable. The concern is that Nursing Care and Social Care for the elderly and infirm are not working effectively together. The aim would be to deliver a seamless service that maintains wellbeing and independence. Laurel is a registered Nurse and has run a care home so was amply qualified to advise us about the subject and she clarified it for us very well.Our next meeting is on June 1st when Pip Wright will give us a ‘Pictorial History of Margaret Catchpole’.

Stowmarket and District Camera ClubGeorge Buxton judged open Competition 3 on 23 March. He gave a very good critique, giving ideas of how we might improve our pictures. Alan Sarsby was the judge on 27 April, who not only judged our work but kept us entertained for the evening. Our club is affiliated to the East Anglian Federation (EAF) and each year an exhibition of photographs submitted by members of all the clubs in East Anglia is held. To be accepted for the exhibition the photographs are reviewed by a rigorous panel of judges; the standard is very high so competition is tough! Two of our members had two images each accepted – Roy Ward for ‘Victorian Country Living Room’ and ‘The Look’ and Roy Fidler for ‘A Perfect Fit Ma’am’ and ‘Lone Drinker’. A Word in Your Ear... June is going to be a memorable month in the Church in this diocese. The new bishop the Rt Revd Martin Seeley will be enthroned in the cathedral at Bury on June 23rd, after being consecrated as bishop by the Archbishop of Canterbury at Westminster Abbey on May 14th. Bishop Nigel Stock left in October 2013 to become Bishop at Lambeth, and for 18 months we were delighted to have Bishop David Thomson, suffragan (assistant) Bishop of Huntington as acting bishop. He did a wonderful job and we were very sorry to see him go on Easter Sunday. For almost three months there will have been no bishop in this diocese, leaving a great deal of work and responsibility for already overstretched archdeacons and other diocesan staff.The enthronement of a new bishop is a spectacular affair. He will make a ritual entry into a packed cathedral. First he has to knock three times with his episcopal crosier – staff - on the west door of the cathedral, and the door is then ceremonially opened to admit him. His crosier is a gift from the 19 deaneries in the diocese and was specially crafted for him by Rob Lewis of Haughley.He will enter to loud cheers, and not surprisingly, great relief. He has been a parish priest, both in this country and in America and has held a number of significant posts. He comes to us from Westcott House theological college in Cambridge, where he was Principal. He is married to Jutta who is at present a priest in Cambridge. They have two children, Anna and Luke – probably the first time anyone can remember young children at the Bishop’s house.The arrival of a new bishop after a vacancy lasting nearly two years, marks a new point in the life of the church. In this benefice of six churches we too are waiting in hope for a new priest in charge to be appointed in due course.In the meantime, the life of the church goes on, and June is a busy month, with village and church events. Cotton is having its Flower Festival the weekend of the 13th and 14th June, which will be well worth visiting. The Friends of St Mary’s Bacton will hold their Annual General Meeting in the Community Room on June 4th. The Kettle will continue to call from the Community Room on alternate Monday afternoons, beginning on the 1st June, the Work Club will continue to meet on Thursday mornings and the house group on Tuesday evenings.So, we are in a time of waiting, but also a time of rejoicing. The psalmist said Come let us sing unto the Lord and make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation. There is much work to do, but we also have much to be thankful for. Enjoy June!Barbara Bilston

All new online feedback platform for health and

social care in Suffolk

Healthwatch Suffolk, which has the job to ensure that the voice of local people and communities is fed into the heart of NHS and care services, has launched a new engagement tool to help people in Suffolk let health and care bosses know what’s good and what’s bad about health and social care in the county.

The Feedback Centre is accessible via a variety of devices including mobile phones, ordinary PCs and tablets, just by going to Healthwatch Suffolk’s website - www.healthwatchsuffolk.co.uk. People can easily and anonymously rate the care that they received in an engaging and simple way from wherever they are.

It is important that everyone has the chance to be heard. People can therefore share their views using numerous methods including physical comment postcards (by freepost), by telephone or directly with staff at community events across the county.

Recent research has shown that half of the public who considered complaining about NHS services did not. Many people were put off because they expected the process to be too bureaucratic and others believed it would make no difference. Healthwatch Suffolk believes that by helping patients to more easily express their views we can improve health and social care.

Tony Rollo (Chair of Healthwatch Suffolk) said:

“We are here to make sure that the patient voice comes through loud and clear to the professionals who make decisions about health and social care in the county. As an independent organisation, we hope to gain the trust of the public to tell us their full experiences of local services; the excellent and the good, as well as where things need to improve. We hope that by creating a familiar tool, we will be able to engage many more people in celebrating and improving health and social care here in Suffolk.”
