The Forgetting Curve
The ‘forgetting curve’ describes how information we store in our memories is forgotten over time. Following extensive research, psychologists provide us with the graph below that illustrates how much information we ‘forget’, after we learn it for the first time. Graph 1 – ‘normal’ forgetting
On average, people forget 70% of what was learned after one day, and 85% after one month. This in itself is not particularly remarkable or helpful to us as teachers, parents or students. It just tells us that we forget a lot of what has been learned. What is interesting, is the effect of reviewing or revisiting that learning once, twice, three or four times, after that first point of learning.
Graph 2 – the effect of reviewing learning
Graph 2 shows the effect of reviewing learning on forgetting. One review, increases retention of information after one month from 15% (with no review) to over 50%. Two reviews increase retention further to close to 80%, and so on.
This model assumes, of course, that people know or remember 100% in the first place, then after each review. However, it definitely reinforces the importance of planning to review learning in order to improve retention of core knowledge, which underpins success in learning at school.

Our Year 7 girls were involved in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Maths) project through Steam Works, a company which aims to promote careers in engineering and related fields. The girls met Dr Alison Buxton who gave them the task of building a course for a mini-robot, complete with coding to instruct the robot where to move. The girls had to work as a team to overcome a number of challenges which tested their patience, creativity and problem solving skills. There were some fantastic designs, including the ambulance-bot created by Emily’s group, the realistic volcano created by Frankie’s group and Olivia’s incredibly life-like palm tree.
