42,195 KMIN THE HEART OF PARIS

The most beautiful city in the world had to offer marathon runners the greatest marathon in the world!

No other capital in the world can pride itself on having more amazing scenery than that offered by the

Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris. Throughout the 42.195km, the participants will visit the City of Light’s

    most symbolic places.

Start. The pack will start its journey by going downthe Champs-Élysées. The atmosphere will be festiveas the tens of thousands of competitors go roundPlace de la Concorde and are cheered on by manyspectators.

Km 2-4. Rue de Rivoli boasts an amazing view: to

the right, the Tuileries Garden and the Hôtel de Ville. To the left, the arches and Place du Palais Royal. Theroute is straight with a slight downhill slope.

Km 5. The runners will go through Place de la Bastillefor the first time. The first refreshment stand willbe set up here at the foot of the July Column. The crowds will be huge: some runners will takeadvantage of this to walk for a few metres.

Km 6-11. Once the pack has gone up Rue du FaubourgSaint-Antoine, it will enter the 12th arrondissement byAvenue Daumesnil. The runners will pass by severaltypically Parisian markets before entering the Boisde Vincennes.

Km 12. After a long straight stretch, a slight uphillslope, the route of the Schneider Electric Marathonde Paris will pass by the Esplanade of the Châteaude Vincennes. The building, constructed from the 14th to the 16th century, is the biggest royal strongholdin France.

Km 13-20. When the pack crosses the Bois deVincennes, it will be able to finally get its bearingsin the heart of a lush green setting. These woods, which represent 10% of Paris’ total surface area, arethe capital’s biggest green space (9.95 square km).Entertainment will then follow the marathon runnersthroughout the race.

Km 24-28. This may be the most magnificent sectionof the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris. Havingrun along next to the Seine on the upper quays, therunners will then take the Voie Pompidou. The wholeof Paris will be revealed to them. When they leave

the Tunnel des Tuileries, they will be able to admirethe Musée d’Orsay, the temple of Impressionism, onthe left. Several hectometres further on, they will runthrough Place de la Concorde again, before headingtowards Place de l’Alma where millions of spectatorstraditionally assemble.

Km 29. Here they will discover the Eiffel Towthe Jardins du Trocadéro. This is a special mfor the runners, who for the majority, will nstruggling to maintain the same pace as at thBut the atmosphere will remain festive, so the

    will follow suit.

Km 31-34. The crossing of the 16th arrondissThe pack will go round the Roland Garros Stthe venue which plays host to the Frenchbefore entering the Bois de Boulogne.

Km 35-41. The atmosphere will be calmer arunners will be able – when they have mustethe strength – to immerse themselves in the hambiance of the green lung in the west of the (which is two and a half times bigger than NewCentral Park).

Km 42. On the outskirts of the Porte Dauphvoice of the official announcer will become

    DISABLED SPORT

For many years the French Disabled Sports

Federation has been involved in the organisation

of the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris for

disabled athletes and has been playing an active

role in developing the race within the context of

    the event.

This allows disabled athletes in wheelchairs toparticipate in the Marathon with a greater level ofcomfort. They stay in the same hotel as able-bodiedelite athletes. Shuttle buses are available to transportdisabled athletes to the Salon du Running to collecttheir race bibs at the Fédération Française Handisportstand. Training sessions are organised on Fridayand Saturday in Vincennes to prepare for Sunday’srace. The disabled participants set off ten minutesbefore the able-bodied competitors. This allows thedisabled athletes who run or who are in wheelchairsto compete on the same course safely. During therace, the pack is escorted by a group of cyclists whichadapts itself to the competitors’ fast pace.A specific refreshment stand and tent are reservedfor them at the finish so they can recover properly.Lastly, a light-hearted lunch will be held for the

race’s participants on the premises of the FédérationFrançaise Handisport.

    BEHIND THE SCENESOF THE MARATHON

    ENVIRONMENTAL ISSU

WHEN THE BLUE LINE GUIDES THEMARATHON RUNNERS

From the Champs-Elysées to Avenue Foch, the blueline is the perfect guide for the marathon runners.Jean-Marie Grall, the official course measurer of theSchneider Electric Marathon de Paris says: “The blueline is a guide for those running the 42.195km.” Itis very carefully marked out on the Thursday andFriday night before the Schneider Electric Marathon

de Paris. The employees from the capital’s technicaldepartments are given police protection, while theymark out the line –positioned on a machine designedfor this purpose. The measurer adds: “I personallysupervise the drawing of the line, because there arealways minor changes to make as well as obstaclesto avoid. You have to know the course like the backof your hand in order to know where to go…” Everyyear, on a Sunday in April, it highlights that Paris’streets and avenues evolve in sync with the marathon.

    PACE SETTERS:A PARISIAN SPECIALITY

This is the other major specific features of theSchneider Electric Marathon de Paris: to allow

competitors of all levels to base their pace on that ofthe pacesetters. The concept, invented by DominiqueChauvelier, has now been adapted by most of theinternational races. But no other marathon in theworld can pride itself on offering such a preciseservice to competitors of all levels.

Laurent, from Savoie who has already run the 42.195km in under 2h30, will be one of the pace setters on12th April. He says: “I am very touched to be honouredin such a way and very aware of the importance of mymission. The runners train for months to achieve theirobjective. We need to help them reach the finish line.”

Bearing different-coloured streamers mentioning thetarget times very visibly, the 32 pace setters (four

per fifteen minutes) play a vital role for a significantnumber of competitors: whether they are trying togo under the barrier of 3 hours (for the fastest ofthem) or simply to finish in more than 4 and a halfhours (the slowest pace), the marathon runners liketo be reassured by adopting the pace set by thepace setters.

    WONDERFUL AND ESSENTIALVOLUNTEERS!

Volunteers play a central role in the organisation ofthe Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris. They can befound everywhere, from checking medical certificatesat the Salon du Running to presenting the medals atAvenue Foch. Sometimes they are visible, but mostof the time they work behind the scenes.Olivier is 57 and is a former high-level marathon

runner (personal best: 2h18’34”). He says: “I’ve beena volunteer and a coach for several years. For me,this is a different way of running and of staying inthe world of athletics.”The mission carried out by the volunteers isenormous! It includes distributing bibs and runners’bags, managing flows and helping to keep the routesafe, supervising the left luggage facilities and therefreshments stands, distributing finisher t-shirts andmedals. In total, each competitor at the SchneiderElectric Marathon de Paris has a direct and extremelypersonal contact with around ten men and womendedicated to their job.

Almost 3,000 men and women give

their time and their energy to the

    Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris.

Olivier goes on: “I used to be in charge of collectingthe timing chips at the finish line. Since they are nolonger used, I now supervise the left luggage atAvenue Foch.” This is a strategic position. “I manageapproximately 150 volunteers - including aroundthirty running buddies. In total, we handle more than20,000 bags.” He notes: “At the finish line, it reallyis all stations go. The runners want to grab theirthings quickly and get changed. Sometimes they getangry. But the volunteers do what they can so thateverything goes smoothly. At the left luggage area,as at all the other stations, I think we do a good job!”

    RESPECTING THE ENVIRONMENT: A PRIORITY!

For several years, the Schneider Electric Marathonde Paris has held an awareness raising campaignwith French and foreign runners to encourage moreenvironmentally-friendly behaviour in public places.A.S.O. works with ‘Les Connexions’ to ensure thatthe most popular sporting event of the year is trulyenvironmentally responsible.

Positioned at each refreshment stand, the aim of theteams is to clear and sort the waste in the area. Inpractical terms, this means that:

u The bottles are opened in advance, enablingrunners to drink quickly and throw bottles intothe bins positioned along the 500m after therefreshment stand.

u The organisation ‘La Bouchonette’ will also bepresent at each refreshment stand, collecting bottletops and giving them a second life, by exchangingthem for wheelchairs.

u Different bins will be specifically set up to collectwaste.

More and more French runners are following the example set by their British neighbours by adding a

charitable dimension to their athletic pursuits. In 2014, sales of charity bibs for the Schneider Electric

Marathon de Paris generated €610,000 for 57 charities via two fundraising platforms: Alvarum for Franceand The Real Buzz for the UK. On top of this sum, thousands of euros were raised in personal pledges

made to the runners themselves. This year’s Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris will be another chancefor this tremendous outpouring of generosity.

Mécénat Chirurgie CardiaqueThis association enables children suffering fromheart defects to come to France for operationswhen they cannot be treated in their homecountries. Every month, around twenty childrenundergo operations in eight French cities. Besidesthis primary mission, the charity also funds trainingfor attending physicians in the children’s countriesof origin and provides sponsorship for schooling. As the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris drawscloser, Mécénat Chirurgie Cardiaque has set itself afundraising target of €24,000, enough to pay forlife-saving heart operations for two sick children.Patrice Roynette, joint President of MécénatChirurgie Cardiaque, confirms: “Thanks to thearrangements we have made with the SchneiderElectric Marathon de Paris team over the past 11

years, we have been able to provide operationsfor 26 children suffering from heart diseases. Thisyear we are setting up “Le Défi du cœur”operation,a programme in which highly motivated runnerscombine tough personal challenges with their desireto save children’s lives by really pushing themselvesin the marathon. Participants include rollerbladingchampion Taig Khris, who will be running his firstmarathon; one of our honorary patrons, who wantsto do her bit to support our fundraising; and BenoitZwierzchiewski (known as Benoit Z), a wonderfulcoach and European marathon record holder. He says:“Preparing for a marathon is an enormous sportingchallenge in itself, but if you can transform that featinto an act of solidarity, your efforts reap even greaterrewards!”

    Interview of Audrey KTOURZA,Group Manager

Interview of Georgine TIXIERin charge of Nutritionand Health Research

The banana is undoubtedly the fresh fruit that is

eaten the most by those who take part in endurance

sports. Is this why you are present at the capital’s

marathon?Everyone knows how much athletes appreciatebananas and the nutritional benefits they providebefore, during and after a race – in fact, that’s oneof the reasons why we’re an Official Partner of themarathon. Bananas are rich in carbohydrates, thenutrients you need the most during intense exercise. They’re also a source of vitamin B6, which helps thebody generate energy. The other reason is that wewant to provide all the runners with exceptionalbananas of French origin for this marathon in thecountry’s capital.

What’s so special about French bananas? The 650 producers of bananas from Guadeloupeand Martinique, who work together on family farms, offer the only French banana that protects theenvironment, defends human rights and works todevelop local economies. Building on more than adecade of environmental action, the group constantly

improves its practices in order to better preserveair, water and land, save energy, manage waste andenrich biodiversity on its plantations. The adoption of new farming practices and theintroduction of innovative technology aim to reduceall the ways in which banana farming impacts theenvironment. As a responsible employer, the group isdedicated to protecting its employees and promotingtheir expertise. Ninety percent of our jobs are onpermanent contracts. From the freedom to unioniseto professional training and statutory pensions, ourpolicies are head and shoulders above those ofother banana producers around the world. From aneconomic point of view, it is also worth noting thatthe group is the largest private employer on the twoislands, providing 10,000 direct and indirect jobs.

    Why are performance drinks importa

endurance events such as the Schneider E

Marathon de Paris? The principal losses to bear in mind for endevents like this one are water loss due to perspwhich is accompanied by a loss of sodium, espif the event is taking place in hot weathetherefore recommended that runners takegulps of a performance energy drink at rintervals (every 15-20 minutes) in order to rehand replace sodium, as the drinks are formspecifically to fulfil these needs. The drinks also ensure a steady supcarbohydrates (energy), which prevents atfrom exhausting their bodies’ energy re(glycogen) and therefore delays fatigue. Finaisotonic properties of Isostar’s Hydrate & Penergy drink simultaneously promote hydratioptimum absorption of its key ingredients (mvitamins and carbohydrates).

Have you noticed a change in runners’ expec

of performance drinks in recent years?

Now that runners understand how effperformance drinks are, their expectationshifted to focus more on taste and acidity.Flavours like lemon and orange are classic mabut new flavours such as mint and cranberrproved very popular. Isostar has also develodrink with a neutral taste and pH, the ideal sfor athletes who get tired of “flavoured” quickly and who prefer non-acidic products

    THE OFFICIAL BROADCAST

Interview of Jean-Claude BIVERCEO of TAG Heuer

Interview of Sarah SOLTANE,Sponsoring Project Manager

Founded in 1860, your company has beeninvolved in the world of sport for many years. What values do you want to communicate? It’s true, TAG Heuer has a long history of sponsoringsport in all disciplines. This allows us to promotethe values that we share with the world of sport:challenge, competition and constantly striving todo better.Putting aside the world record breakingperformances, it is what anonymous amateur athletesachieve when they run a legendary race such as theParis Marathon, which inspires us at TAG Heuer. They train for many long months, following a strictprogramme, often imposing severe schedules uponthemselves in order to achieve their goal: to runmore than 42km in one of the most beautiful citiesin the world. It is an incredible, outstanding effort;only those who have tried know exactly what I amtalking about. I ran the New York Marathon and it willremain one of the best moments of my life. It is notonly their bodies that marathon runners exhaust inorder to cross that finish line. We also exhaust ourmental resources, drawing upon sheer will power to

keep going. I admire this form of courage. It is thepersonification of the message “Don’t crack underpressure”. That is why TAG Heuer is proud to supportthese men and women.

Time is an important concept for marathon runners.

Is that why you have entered into a partnership with

the Paris race?Back in 1916, when the Maison Heuer invented theMikrograph, the world’s first time recorder which wasaccurate to a hundredth of a second, it pushed thelimits of precision in a considerable way. Since then,we have continued to strive to do so. You could saythat, in the same way, pushing the limits of time iswhat marathon runners are trying to do: the worldrecord for this distance was broken in 2014, an

incredible performance! We look forward to seeingit being broken again in the near future. It is thereforenatural for a cutting-edge watchmaker such as TAGHeuer to join the Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris.

What advice would you give to competitors in theSchneider Electric Marathon de Paris with regardsto hydration?Keeping well hydrated on a daily basis is important, and even more so during sport. It is essential to drinkbefore, during and after exercise. Drinking Vittelnatural mineral water enables you to stay hydratedthroughout the race, maintaining your physicalperformance! Vittel supplies more than 480,000bottles throughout the race. These are available thelength of the race at the nine refreshment stands.

How are plastic bottles recycled at the end of the

Schneider Electric Marathon de Paris? For the past five years, we have adopted anenvironmentally-friendly approach with recyclingfacilities throughout the race. Volunteers help therunners to ensure their bottles are recycled. Thebottles are then collected and recycled by Paris CityHall. Recycling is simple, but it is still not systematic. That is why VITTEL natural mineral water is raisingthe awareness of runners in the Schneider ElectricMarathon de Paris of the importance of recycling

and encouraging them to do so. So, after eachrefreshment station, recycling facilities are availableto collect the 480,000 bottles which are 100%recyclable, ensuring they go on to have another life!
