Thanksgiving Basket Guidelines

For those who are planning to prepare a basket of food to donate to those in need, there are a few guidelines to follow when putting it together.

1. Please bring the food to St. Vincent’s school gym on Monday, November 21 between 6:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

2. Choose a turkey or roasting chicken appropriate for the family you wish to feed:

1-2 people: a chicken or turkey breast or small turkey.

3-4 people: a turkey 12 – 15 lbs.

5-6 people: a turkey 16 – 18 lbs.

7 or more people: a turkey 19+ lbs.

3. Make sure the bird is frozen and wrapped securely in newspaper and brown bag. This will keep the bird cold and prevent thawing. Important: Please write the turkey size on the outside of the brown bag.

4. Include the “fixings” for a Thanksgiving Dinner – rolls, stuffing, cranberry sauce, yams, vegetables, gravy, nuts, pies (not frozen) and some festive candies.

5. No frozen food, except the turkey, should be included in the box. No milk, butter or other dairy products

that would spoil without refrigeration for several hours.

6. No alcoholic beverages, please.

7. Place heavier foods on the bottom and crushable items (desserts, pies, fruit, rolls, etc.) on top.

8. Fresh fruits and vegetables are always welcome and appreciated.

9. Mark the outside of the box/basket indicating the number of people it is designed to feed. A list of the contents of the box taped to the outside would also be appreciated.

AUDITORIUM CREWS ARE NEEDED FROM DECEMBER TO APRIL

We are most grateful for those parishioners who quietly make this transformation for "church" each weekend.

GREET TEAM!

As we all know, St. Vincent’s gets a lot of visitors and family during our Christmas Masses. This is a wonderful gift to our parish but one that requires lots of help with making people feel welcome and providing a safe place to worship. Many of you probably remember the excitement of the fire alarm in a crowded gym during the 4;00 PM Vigil Mass a few years ago. Blessedly no one was hurt and no damage occurred but this event reminded us that we must always be aware of safety on our campus. In order to provide a safe and welcoming worship experience again this Christmas, we will need lots of extra help at ALL our Masses, and especially on Dec. 24. Lower Church, School Building, parking lot, St. Paul Inside the Walls -- all will require personnel to insure the safety of all. Please consider sharing a bit of your Christmas Time so that we can be assured of providing a secure and welcoming environment. Join the Greet Team to lend a hand – Please contact Fr. George or Jan so we can see where you might be able to assist.

ADVENT IS COMING! BEGINNING NOVEMBER 26-27, 2016

What is new for Advent?

The Music Ministry will

lead us in the 2015 new entrance

song, Light a Candle for All to See.

The words change each Sunday in

Advent and will be in the inside

covers of the Breaking Bread books. You did a

great job with this beautiful Advent Entrance

song last year.

Any family and or persons who would like to

light our Advent Wreath Candles will have the

opportunity to sign the book the weekend of

Nov. 19 -20. The binder will be in the Lobby of

the School as you enter our Lower Church.

Please select a weekend and then arrive 15

minutes early and identify yourself to the

celebrant. This is a beautiful SVM Advent

tradition.

Advent Blue Books will be available at the doors

of Church next weekend. Make sure to pick one

up for your family. This 6 minute reflection is a

lovely way to begin or end your days of Advent.

PRAYER

WEEKLY READINGS OUR LORD JESUS CHRIST, KING OF THE UNIVERSE

First Reading: 2 Samuel 5:1-3 Samuel describes how all the tribes of Israel went to David in Hebron and said they were his bone and his flesh and it was he who led them back to Israel. The Lord told David he would be a shepherd to His people. David made an agreement with the elders and was anointed king. Second Reading: Colossians 1:12-20 Paul explains to the Colossians that God has made them fit to share in the inheritance of the holy ones in light and that through the Son we have redemption and forgiveness of sin. He describes Jesus as the image of the invisible God, the head of the church and in Him all things hold together. Gospel: Luke 23:35-43 Jesus is mocked by the crowd as he hung on the cross. Above him was an inscription that read “This is the king of the Jews.” One of the men being crucified with Jesus tells Him to save them and Himself, while the other asks that he be remembered when Jesus is in his kingdom. Jesus said in reply, “Amen I say to you, today you will be with me in Paradise.”

MINISTRY

THANKSGIVING OUTREACH

Preparations are underway for our parish community’s Thanksgiving Outreach. As many of you know, our parish assembles and distributes baskets of food for the hungry and the needy here in Madison. Baskets are also sent to St. Agnes parish in Paterson as well as agencies in both Paterson and Newark. You can help in several ways.

Prepare a basket (a sturdy box or laundry basket makes a great basket) consisting of frozen turkey, potatoes, stuffing, cranberry sauce, gravy, fresh fruits and vegetables, condiments and desserts – all of the “fixins” for a Thanksgiving dinner. Please pledge a basket by taking a tag from one of the baskets on the tables at the entrances to the lower church. Each tag represents a specific family or individual. Detailed instructions for the preparation of the basket will be printed in a future bulletin.

Volunteer on Monday, November 21 to help assemble, collect and prepare baskets for distribution.

Volunteer to deliver baskets – locally – on Monday, November 21 between 5:00 – 6:00 p.m. We can really use the assistance of the men of the parish for this. Please bring a flashlight!

Make a financial donation that will be applied toward the purchase of food for the baskets.

If you wish to help, please call Barbara Eutsler at 973-822-0387, send an email to [email protected] or fill out the form below and return it to the Parish Office, attn. Thanksgiving Outreach Coordinator.

CHRISTMAS OUTREACH

If Thanksgiving is right around the corner, then Christmas cannot be far behind. Work is underway for our annual Christmas outreach. Each year we have had a generous and warm response to the poor and struggling in our community, and throughout our Diocese. Because of the generosity of so many of you, we are able to bring some of Christ’s light into the lives of many. There are a variety of ways that you can participate if you are interested.

Giving Tree: A Christmas tree will be in the church vestibule with gift requests on it beginning Thanksgiving weekend. Anyone interested can take a tag, purchase the gift requested and return it, wrapped and with the tag attached by December 11. These gifts go to local families, to Diocesan or county agencies and to poor parishes.

Adoption: If you wish to consider anonymously “adopting” a family or individuals to give them a special Christmas, please call. The family or individual’s needs/requests, and instructions for drop off will be forwarded to you.

Donations: Food cards or financial donations are always welcome. Please call or drop a note to the Social Ministry in the Sunday collection.

Volunteer: Help is always welcomed and greatly appreciated because ‘many hands’ really do ‘make light work’.

If you are interested in volunteering some time towards the Christmas Outreach or if you have any questions or suggestions please contact Jeanne Buckley on 201-988-4246 or via email at [email protected])
