AUGUST NEWS FROM This month we are focusing our report on volunteering. Volunteers are a vital resource in the running of our village shop. We have a wonderful group, all very different but they have one thing in common; a willingness to give up some time to help run the shop. Volunteering can be on a weekly, monthly, termtime only or just for a short period when you have less going on in your life. Training is given and as our volunteers say, " the till isn't too frightening after all!" If you want to have a chat about the possibility of being involved, do contact Chris Cook, our Volunteer Coordinator. You may wish to spend some time with a volunteer to see if it's something you might be interested in. There is no commitment until you are happy. Below are some experiences from our volunteers. “When we moved to the village last year we had such a warm welcome from everyone and especially from the shop. Having such a well-stocked shop in a village is a godsend and being able to order quality produce so easily and buy essentials (and treats) without getting the car out is a real village asset. So when we were approached to see if we were willing to volunteer we agreed with slight trepidation. However our fears were misguided and we both enjoy working there very much. It's very friendly, an excellent way to meet people and catch up on local news and views and the till isn't difficult at all! " Graham & Maggie Davison – Volunteers. For more information on volunteering, please contact Chris Cook on 373422 or email: [email protected] “I moved from Oxford to Islip 15 years ago with a toddler and I was expecting my second child. Village life was very different to city life and the shop was a lifeline to me, especially after my second baby arrived. I’m eternally grateful for the welcome I received from everyone in the shop and once my children were old enough, I decided to become a volunteer myself. Volunteering isn’t at all onerous and you can offer as much or as little time as you have, it’s all so flexible, great fun and you learn new skills. Now my baby of 15 years ago is also volunteering as part of her Duke of Edinburgh award. How time flies!” Kate Venables – Volunteer and Committee member.
