EXPLORING THE EPISCOPAL LITURGY by The Rev. Gayle McCarty
Almighty God, to you all hearts are open, all desires known, and from you no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you, and worthily magnify your holy Name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.
The Collect for Purity – A Time of Preparation
Its usage began as a preparatory prayer of private devotion by the priest before the worship service back in the 11th century. Archbishop Thomas Cranmer later translated this prayer to English and moved it to the public part of the liturgy in the 1552 Book of Common Prayer. Its use is required in Rite I and is optional in Rite II, but I contend that I need, we need, the Church needs, to pray this at our entrance into worship.
It sets the tone. It sets our posture. It sets our hearts for worship. It strips us bare of all masks, all self-deception, all self-aggrandizement for we know that God knows. God knows us – all of us – and as we are. Not as others may perceive us. Not as we may deceive others. God knows our inner se-crets, our hidden desires and the condition of our hearts. And, the All-Knowing God welcomes us anyway.
And because we know that God knows us – all of us – we petition God in this prayer to cleanse our hearts. We know that God must act to free of us all sin and shame, to help us set aside all distractions and worries and oth-er baggage that we are carrying with us through the doors of the church. We pray that the Holy Spirit inspires us to love and praise God – to love God perfectly and worthily magnify God’s holy Name.
We pray to come to worship God wide-open, willing and wanting to be cleansed so that we may fully receive God – to hear and sense and experi-ence God – in the multitude of ways in the worship service to follow: through the hearing of the reading of God’s Word, the common corporate wor-ship in community of fellow believers, the proclamation of the Gospel, the breaking open of the word via the sermon, the words and music of the hymns, the passing of the peace with brothers and sister in Christ, the holy exchange of the Eucharist . . . Perfectly does not mean error-free but instead means wholeness and fullness.
Theologian Aleaxander Schmemann wrote, “The Eucharist is the entrance of the Church into the joy of its Lord.” The Collect for Purity is our portal into such. May you come to share my love for this Collect. May you deep-ly appreciate its purpose and power. May you long to receive and respond to the One that loves you as you are.

CHILDREN’S CHURCH NEWS by Debbie Torstrick
Children’s church will resume Sunday, Sep-tember 16! Children’s Church is open to all chil-dren ages four (4) and older who are ready to participate by actively listening, responding and singing. The children gather in the children’s li-brary at 10:15 a.m. on Sunday mornings and move to the Children’s Chapel at 10:25 a.m. for songs and worship. They return to the worshipping com-munity as the Peace is exchanged and the table prepared for Holy Eucharist.
THE REV. ERIN HENSLEY - GUEST PREACHER SEPTEMBER 30 The Rev. Erin Hensley is the sixth Rector of St. Al-ban's Episcopal Church, Austin, Texas. She enjoys her role as God's storyteller, sacrament bearer, and pastor to and equipper of saints (all the baptized) for ministry. She has a passion for authentic community that looks inward and outward, mirroring the very life of God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. She came to St. Alban's from St. John's Roanoke, Virginia, where she served a little over six years, and served at St. Alban's Episco-pal Church in Washington, D.C. before this. She dreamed of being a tough love elementary school teacher growing up, and yet God (thankfully) led her to serve as a lead congregational teacher (and learner) instead.
Many of you may remember her as Erin Seltzer. She grew up in Jack-son, TN, and proudly claims St. Luke's as her church home. Erin's hus-band Sam works as Director of Music and Mission at Good Shepherd on the Hill in Austin, Texas, so he will not be able to join Erin this time. Their six year old son Micah, however, will come to St. Luke's with Erin, so you'll get to see and hear the best third of the Hensley family.
ANNUAL PARISH PICNIC by Johnathan Kendrick
Prepare yourself for an afternoon of fun as St. Luke’s hosts our annual Parish Picnic at Con-ger/Highland Park, September 9, 2018, fol-lowing the 10:30 a.m. service. Bring a dish and a chair then enjoy drinks (no adult beverages) and the main course provided by St. Luke’s. Activities for the young and young at heart will delight! See you there.
Conger/Highland Park, 1453 N. Highland Ave., Jackson, TN 38301.
CHRISTIAN EDUCATION BEGINS SEPTEMBER 16 by Mary Beth Seltzer, Christian Education Chair We are excited to share our plans for Adult Christian Education! First, we will have a Care of Creation Series based on the Abundant Life pro-gram from Episcopal Relief and Development. These lessons will be in the Commons and will be facilitated by our committee members who are creative teachers. Come see how creation care, Bible stories and our daily activities weave together in our abundant lives.
The Reflections Class, ably led by Gary Wake, will begin in October in the Library. This class discusses the lectionary readings for the day.
Please come join us and grow together in fellowship and learning. Many thanks to our Adult Christian Education Committee: Jason Cole, Kyle Dempsey, Jennifer Trently, Gary Wake, Deacon Tommy Rhoads and The Rev. Gayle McCarty.
ST. LUKE’S NIGHT AT THE STARLIGHT SYMPHONY by Cody Blue Miller
Join St. Luke’s on Saturday, September 29, as we enjoy the 40th annual Starlight Sym-phony presented by The Jackson Symphony on the lawn of First Presbyterian Church. We will have a designated area with tables and the church will provide soft drinks and bot-tled water. Bring a dish to share, your favorite beverage and a blanket or lawn chair. The Ca-rillon concert begins at 6:45 p.m. with St. Luke’s very own Carilloneurs Kathleen Huneycutt and Cody Blue Miller performing. The Symphony be-gins at 7:30 p.m. Come enjoy an evening filled with music, friends and fellowship!
YOUTH AND CHILRDEN’S CHRISTIAN EDUCATION by The Rev. Gayle McCarty
YOUTH CHRISTIAN EDUCATION (5th Grade and above) - St. Luke's clergy will lead this class on Sunday mornings with assis-tance from others. We have an exciting semester planned and encour-age ALL of our youth to join us in the meeting room upstairs across from the Children's Chapel. Bring a friend!
CHILDREN'S CHRISTIAN EDUCATION (4 year olds - 4th grad-ers) - We give thanks for the dedicated service of Erin and Andrew Sharp who have decided to take a break from facilitating in order to attend Adult Christian Ed classes. We are grateful that Rachel and Chuck Humphrey return as lead facilitators for this age group. Final recruit-ment of the remaining line up of facilitators is near completion. Par-ents - we urge you to commit to bringing your children for faith build-ing lessons and fellowship on Sunday mornings where they will learn about and encounter God!

WHY I SERVE AS A LECTOR by Lyda Kay Ferree
A lectionary (Latin: Lectionarium) is a book or list-ing that contains a collection of Scripture readings ap-pointed for Christian or Judaic worship on a given day or occasion. The Revised Common Lectionary, pub-lished in 1992 and officially adopted by The Episcopal Church in 2006, is a table of readings from Scripture appointed to be read at Sunday worship.
Why do churches use the Lectionary? The Lectionary helps orient the church calendar. The readings during Advent have to do with the first coming of Christ, and Epiphany season readings pertain to the revelation of God in Christ, and so on. Readings on Sunday should match the Church’s journey through the life of Christ.
According to church office records, I began serving as a lay reader at St. Luke’s Episcopal Church on September 10, 2017. When asked to serve in this ca-pacity, I did not hesitate to do so. With a background in public relations and public speaking and having been a radio talk show host for 10 ½ years, I am comfortable speaking in public even though public speaking is the number one fear in life, according to most surveys.
Like most lay readers, my ritual before reading at the 8:00 a.m. service is to review the Scriptural readings several times before the Sunday in which I am scheduled to read. In so doing, not only do I become more familiar with the readings on a personal level and try to relate the readings to my life, but also my goal is to read the Scriptures set aside for that Sunday to be more meaningful and personal to the parishioners in attendance.
As a lay reader it is my deepest desire that we may hear, read, mark, learn and inwardly digest the Scripture.
I encourage you to consider saying yes if called upon to read at one of our two services. You don’t need to be a professional public speaker to read and con-vey with passion and heart the readings of God’s Word. Like me, you too, will benefit by learning more about the Scripture and you will feel a deeper and more personal connection with the parishioners and with God.
SOCIAL MEDIA SUNDAY - SEPTEMBER 30, 2018 Social Media Sunday is the day set aside for Christians everywhere to use their electronic devices to share their life of faith with all of their friends and family. Use Face-book, Twitter, Instagram, or whatever platform of social media you use to Check-In, share photos, share the ser-mon, or something from the scriptures or Book of Com-mon Prayer that touched you on this day. Join us and let others know that church is important to you, that your faith is important to you, and use this opportunity to invite them to join you for services!

DINE-OUT Dine-Out groups for Fall begin again this September through December! Dine-Out is a casual dinner fellowship opportunity wherein small groups of 6 or so of St. Luke’s communicants and friends of the church meet once a month in local restaurants (Dutch treat) for a casual time to get together. Couples and singles are encouraged to join. If your schedule allows, you are welcome to participate in this DINE-OUT option even if you participate in a St. Luke’s Foyer group.
There will be a sign-up sheet in the hallway across from the church office. If you have signed up for Dine-Out in the past, you do not need to sign up again. Feel free to contact Susan or John McCutchen at [email protected] or 731-668-4718.
BECAUSE I CAN by Lyn Wheeler
Just call me “Lyn”, or if you want to be formal, Lynda Townsend-Wheeler.
I have been a member of the St. Luke’s Church community for 16 years, since moving here with my husband, Chris, from Sarasota, Florida.
In 2008, I drove to Florida and walked 60 miles in the Su-san G. Komen event for breast cancer awareness. Why? Because “I could”. And that has pretty much been my mantra my whole life.
When I have found a need to help here at St. Luke’s, I have applied this same thought. From organizing the baked goods schedule, scheduling ushers, helping on the Altar Guild, organizing meals for Pastoral Care, decorating a table for our annual fundraiser with Ginny DeWitt and Treasurer for our ECW group, I go where I can help…because I am blessed with the health and time to be able to.
Outside St. Luke’s I am happy to be able to help out at “Hand’s Up Pre-School” two (2) days a week, serving lunch. When needed, I foster puppies and kitties for the Downtown Dogs Group, much to the disdain sometimes of other two and four legged members of my family. My favorite fundraiser to help with is Re-demption Road Rescue, where horses from all surrounding counties are given a second chance.
We are all born into a family…and then there is the family we choose. Chris and I are blessed with many family members especially here in Jackson. And that is why I give back to this community…because I can.

The Hal and Beth Meredith Outreach Fund at St. Luke’s is proud to partner with and support LIFELINE Blood Services. LIFELINE has been a staple in our commu-nity for many years. Today, they are embracing new tech-nologies to better serve clinics and hospitals throughout West Tennessee.
“LIFELINE Blood Services is extremely grateful to St. Luke’s Episcopal Church for their recent financial contribution. The Blood Services Center will be using your donation to help purchase a pathogen inactivation system. This system is just one of the ways that LIFELINE Blood Services continues to stay on the cutting edge of life-saving technology in transfusion medicine. Thank you again for partnering with us to save lives.” says Cherie Parker, Public Relations and Fundraising Coordinator. This machine will ensure we have one of the safest blood supplies in the country.
CONGRATULATIONS OF THE PARISH are extended to … … Vickie Clement on the birth of her grandson, Bo
Douglas Coleman, born August 11, 2018. The proud
parents are Troy and Ashley Coleman.

RIFA has asked all of their Outreach partners to Pack the Bus. We have bus banks available in the Narthex. Please take one with you and pack your bus with loose change, coins, small bills, etc. Every little bit helps. The banks will be collected on September 16. Donations support RIFA's Snack Backpack program, a ministry that works to provide kid-friendly, easy-to-prepare, nutri-tious food items for Jackson's school children who are at risk of going hun-gry on Saturdays and Sundays.
ECW FALL LUNCHEON AND DINNER The ECW Fall Luncheon on October 24, 2018 is sold out and we are only taking names for the waiting list.
There are still tickets available for the dinner on October 25. Please contact the church office at 731-424-0556 to add your name to the list.
GIFT CARD COLLECTION FOR DOWNTOWN DOGS GROUP With all the dogs and cats that our Outreach partner, Downtown Dogs Group, help, they are always in need of supplies to help our 4-legged friends stay comfortable. Your do-nations mean the world to them! For the month of September, we are collecting GIFT CARDS of any denomination to any store that carries pet supplies. With each card donated (if your name is identi-fied thereon), you will be eligible for the drawing at the end of the month. Prizes include Downtown Dogs Group T-shirts and ball caps.
