ABOUT THIS SECTION

What is bornlearning all about?

Does anyone remember the days before we had TV, movies and video games in our cars? No cell phone? What in the world did parents do to make a car ride bearable? They may not have known at the time, but all those games, songs and actually talking to their children helped them learn new things and improved their chances of succeeding in school!

Everyday life is a learning experience for children. Born Learning is a public engagement campaign that helps us explore ways to turn everyday moments into fun learning opportunities for children.

For example:

At home: Turn everyday activities at home such as laundry, meals, and bedtime into learning experiences for your child. This tomato is round and red. What else is round? Red?

Traveling: Going places is often exciting for children - learn how to make riding in the car, taking public transit, and walking educational for them and fun for you, too. I spy something yellow. Do you see it?

Public places: Being out and about exposes children to many learning opportunities. Learn how you can turn excursions to the market, library, and playground into learning. We’re picking up fish for supper. Where do fish live?

Just remember: Have fun and talk to your kids! Put that annoying cell phone away. No blah, blah, blah phone call is as important as your child!

The Achievement Academy is a public Charter School serving youngchildren with delays and/or disabilities with locations in Bartow,Lakeland and Winter Haven. Our PreK ESE (Exceptional StudentEducation) classrooms serve children, ages 2 through 6, in a loving and

developmentally appropriate environment.

Although most parents know that reading aloud is important, many don’t do it. A recent study conducted by Reading is Fundamental found that only one-third of parents read to their kids every night. But for babies and young children, reading fosters an emotional bond with their caregivers and helps them to develop language skills. Even as your children learn to read on their own, it’s important to continue reading aloud to them, since hearing the words strengthens a child’s comprehension. If you can support your children in discovering that reading is fun, you can help give them a super academic boost!

Take care of yourself so you can take care of your child. Becoming a parent can be overwhelming and exhausting.

Just Read!

P l a y i s a ch i ld ’s w o r k . A child’s play has benefits that extend far beyond the obvious one: fun! Play stimulates your child’s curiosity, creativity, and intellect, which help him discover and make sense of his world. Research shows that the most important factor in a child’s early learning is a loving, nurturing relationship with an adult in her life. And playing together is a great way to nurture that bond.

Through the generosity of grants and sponsorships, libraries are being placed at childcare centers to allow parents to conveniently borrow books to read with their child every day. This encourages the early literacy skills that prepare children to enter school ready to succeed. The first Parent Lending Library was placed in 2004. There are now 120 Parent Lending Libraries in Polk and Hardee counties. Major sponsors have included Verizon Reads, Early Learning Coalition of Polk County, Heartland for Children, Polk County CDBG, and Winter Haven CDBG. Parents borrowed over 30,000 books last year and over 3590 kids had access each month! For more information regarding Lending Libraries please contact Coleen at 863-648-1500 ext. 248 or [email protected].

Drape a large blanket or sheet over a table or two chairs to make a cave for hibernating. Instead of sleeping all winter like a bear, take a flashlight and a good book in with you, and spend some quiet time reading.

When children feel stress they may act out aggressively. While you need to let them know this is not acceptable behavior, you can help them communicate

their feelings by drawing or role playing.

Thank you Lakeland Area Chamber Foundation for your continued support in getting books into the hands of children!

For additional resources and referrals please dial 2-1-1 or 863-648-1515.

Hide-and-SeekHide-and-seek. Your child will discover more than just a hidden smile or toy with simple games of hide-and-seek or peek-a-boo. Watch his communication and sense of touch develop as he watches his favorite objects appear and disappear.

A big thanks to Ann Skellenger (center) for coordinating with Mike Geiger and

John Lowman with Tuesday Tigers at First United Methodist Church in the design and

construction of a cover to protect the hearing testing equipment. Come see the

“new look” at Family Fundamentals.
