This Week’s Sidrah. Joseph is freed from prison and appointed chief economic planner by successfully interpreting the dreams of Pharaoh. There will be seven good years ahead for the Egyptian empire, followed by seven bad years. Joseph, now thirty, has been through years of ups and downs in Egypt and has matured. After the famine he predicted comes, his brothers appear before him, having come from Canaan in search of food. He recognizes them but they do not recognize their brother. Joseph uses this advantage to test his brothers to see how they feel about their wrongdoing twenty years earlier and whether he can now trust and make peace with them. The special Haftararh today is shared with Parshat Beha-a lot-cha. It describes the vision of a Menorah and Zechariah’s writing of the angels’ vision of how that Menorah is to be set and lit.
