The Land of Paraguay Paraguay has about 6.7 million people and is a about the size of California. However, the population of Paraguay is a lot less compared to the population of California, so residents are not so crowded. Subtropical forests and rivers make Paraguay an interesting place to visit. The Rio Paraguay divides the country into half, and most of the people that live there live on the east side. The west is mostly grass and very hot in summers and home to Mennonite colonies.

The Language of ParaguayMost people think because Paraguay is in Latin America that everyone there speaks Spanish. Really, it is a bilingual country. Ninety percent of all residents speaks Spanish and indigenous Guarani. Many other native languages are spoken there, but none of them is as spoken as Guarani.

Something Delicious! One popular Paraguayan dish is called Sopa Paraguaya. Even though Sopa means soup in Spanish, this really is not a soup. Instead, it is cornbread with cheese, onion, and other ingredients. The recipe was kind of an accident when a cook poured too much flower into the soup at lunchtime. Luckily, everyone liked it.
