Do you know the way to 70 percent? Each year since 2011, 63 percent or more of paper products used in the

Greater Heights: Increasing Paper Recovery for RecyclingUnited States are recovered for recycling. That makes paper recycling a true suc-cess story.

In 2015, the paper recovery rate reached a record 66.8 percent. F&PA’s sustainability initiative, Better Practices, Better Planet 2020, includes a goal to further increase paper recovery for recycling to exceed 70 percent by 2020. So how do we get from 2015’s 66.8 percent recovery to 2020’s (more than) 70 percent? By identifying the paper and paperboard grades with the big-gest opportunity for additional collec-tion; sharing that data and information with members who can collect it; and targeting AF&PA’s outreach and educa-tional efforts on reaching the sources of those grades. In the United States, the grades with the biggest opportunities for additional collection are printing-writing papers, corrugated containers and paperboard. To estimate the volumes of each grade, AF&PA developed a model for the U.S. recovered fiber stream. They mapped the various grades of paper and paperboard produced in the U.S. to the major recovered fiber grades and added estimates of imports of packaging for consumer goods as well as exports and imports of recovered fiber. The model used various datasets, includ-ing recovered paper consumption and pa-per recovery data from AF&PA’s statistics program, data from the U.S. Census Bu-reau on exports and imports of recovered fiber, and data from the Fibre Box Associa-tion and Paperboard Packaging Council on imports of packaged consumer goods. The resulting estimate helps mem-bers better understand recovered fiber

demand, the composition of the U.S. recovered fiber stream, recovered fiber flows and the volume of material avail-able for collection. AF&PA is engaged at many levels to support market-based policies and public education to increase paper recovery to meet future demand. Increasingly, our focus includes recovery of mill-quality material in addition to greater volume of material, and identifying areas for growth of recovered materials. We are also working with members and industry groups to increase recovery of harder to recycle materials. AF&PA and the Foodservice Packaging Institute are working to identify opportunities to increase the recovery of paper and paperboard foodservice packaging. In addition, AF&PA is supporting efforts by the Paper Shipping Sack Manufacturers’ Association to promote the recovery of unlined multi-wall paper shipping sacks used for packaging food ingredients or products. AF&PA’s Recovered Fiber program helps ensure a growing domestic supply of recovered fiber to meet global demand, demonstrates industry leadership in a key sustainability area, and advocates for market-based recycling policies. We will continue to raise aware-ness about the importance of recycling, educate policymakers and other key stakeholders about the success of the voluntary fiber recovery infrastructure, and provide tools and resources to help communities, schools and businesses start or improve paper recycling programs.

(continued from page 1)help them learn, and get things done. P+PB recently completed research on how consumers feel about what our industry’s products do for them. We identified primary values that consumers assign to our products’ use. For paper, it all starts with showing their work. They value paper’s role in help-ing them learn and be productive, and feel that it helps them feel confident, competent, and know that they are do-ing things right. Consumers feel a sense of accomplishment when they use and choose our industry’s products. Nurturing this feeling among consum-ers, and even customers, is P+PB’s role

as we help our industry make the case that paper material continues to be unique, valuable and relevant. Bringing together a gallery of innovations helped showcase these attributes and engage both consumers and influencers. To see the innovations featured and learn more about how our in-dustry works to create customer and consumer solutions, visit the www.howlifeunfolds.com/sxsw online gallery. To learn more about our research, visit www.paperandpackaging.org and sign up for the monthly newsletter. Mary Anne Hansan is president of the Paper and Packaging Board.

Nine Dragons Industries Co., Ltd. an-nounced plans to install two new contain-erboard machines at its mills in China. The new production lines — PM 39 in Quanzhou and PM 40 in Chongqing — will produce testliner and fluting grades with a basis weight range of 75 - 140 g/m2 using 100 percent recycled raw materials. The two machines and auxiliary equip-ment will be supplied by Valmet. Nine Dragons said PM 39 will have a production capacity of about 350,000 tpy, while PM 40 will have the capacity to produce 550,000 tpy.

Nine Dragons expects to start up the machines in the fourth quarter of 2018. Nine Dragons is largest producer of containerboard in Asia with total design production capacity of 13.7 million tpy. The company produces a wide variety of packaging paper products, includ-ing linerboard (kraftliner, testliner and white top linerboard), high performance corrugating medium and coated duplex board, as well as the production and sale of recycled printing and writing paper (including uncoated woodfree paper, copy paper, etc.) and specialty paper.

The Paper2017 Luncheon, sponsored by International Paper Company, will be held today, March 28. This year’s keynote speaker is Susan O’Malley, the former president of Washington Sports and Entertainment, and the first female president of a professional sports franchise. Under O’Malley’s guidance, Washing-ton Sports and Entertainment, which includes the Washington Capitals and Washington Wizards, improved its win-ning percentage and bottom line. Her expertise in connecting with employees, transforming organizational culture, and hiring the right people for the right positions enabled her to blaze a trail for herself and others. During her presentation, O’Malley will share her ‘rules’ for leadership and life as well as insider stories about entertainment, hockey, and basketball. The audience will receive practical takeaways for their own lives and organizations. After leaving Washington Sports and Entertainment, she earned her law degree from Georgetown Univer-sity, where she also taught a sports

business marketing class. She served as St. Joseph’s University’s first sports marketing professor and is currently a full-time faculty member at the University of South Carolina During the luncheon, NPTA will present the Stanley O. Committed to Sustainability: The 2016 AF&PA Sustainability Award WinnersAF&PA’s annual Sus-tainability Awards recognize member companies for their commitment to sus-tainability. In 2016, the awards program recognized five AF&PA members for projects that demonstrate commitment to sus-tainability and the achievement of the Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 goals. D a r t C o n t a i n e r C o r p o r a t i o n w a s r e c o g n i z e d w i t h the Leadership in Sustainability Award for Paper Recovery for Recycling for the Dart Employee Recycling Center. In Mason, Michigan, where regular curbside residential recycling services are uncommon and often re-quire payment, paper recovery for recy-cling is free, accessible and convenient for employees and their families at the recycling center. Sappi North America received the Leadership in Sustainability Award for Energy Efficiency and Greenhouse Gas Reduction for their Hood Heat Recovery Project at Somerset. Sappi’s Somerset Mill in Maine reduced its energy-associated footprint and costs through updates to infrastructure that benefit the environment as well as the bottom line. WestRock Company was awarded the

Leadership in Sustainability Award for Safety for their Safety First, Safety Always video project. To achieve a higher rate of employee safety engagement, improve safety culture and morale, and reduce injuries and costs, WestRock produced the Safety First, Safety Always video as part of their 2015 safety strategy. Procter & Gamble was recognized with the Leadership in Sustainability Award for Water for their Water Conservation Response project. Their facility in Ox-nard, California became an important partner in addressing the state’s need for good stewardship of scarce water resources by implementing five projects that set new site and business records for low levels of water consumption. Georgia-Pacific LLC was awarded the Innovation in Sustainability Award for their Protecting Endangered Forests and Special Areas project. Georgia-Pacific used scientific methodology to designate 4.5 million acres as endangered forests and special areas, adding a new and innovative dimen-sion to the industry’s efforts to promote and support sustainable forestry. Projects like these help to improve the industry’s sustainability perfor-mance and are representative of AF&PA members’ commitment to their busi-nesses, the communities where they work and the environment. AF&PA proudly recognizes and promotes these achievements in the hope that they may inspire sustainability projects elsewhere. For more information about AF&PA’s Sustainability Awards program and Better Practices, Better Planet 2020 initiative, visit www.afandpa.org/sustainability.

Sutton has been with the company his entire career. He joined International Paper in 1984 as an engineer at the Pin-eville, Louisiana mill. In 1994, he was named mill manager at the Thilmany, Wisconsin mill, which at the time was part of International Paper’s industrial papers business. In 2000, Sutton relocated to Europe to serve as director of European cor-rugated packaging operations and was promoted to vice president and general manager responsible for all corrugated packaging operations across seven countries in the EMEA (Europe, the Middle East and Africa) region in 2002. In 2005, Sutton was named vice president of corporate strategic planning and relocated to IP’s head-quarters in Memphis, Tennessee. He was named senior vice president, global supply chain, in 2007 and in 2009 be-came senior vice president, printing and communications papers – the Americas. Sutton was appointed to senior vice president, industrial packaging, in No-vember 2011. Sutton is a member of The Business Council and the Business Roundtable. He serves on the American Forest & Paper Association Board of Directors and the International Advisory Board of the Moscow School of Management – Skolkovo. He was appointed Chairman of the U.S. Russian Business Council and was also appointed to the U.S. Sec-tion of the U.S.-Brazil CEO Forum. He also serves on the Board of Directors of Memphis Tomorrow and Board of Governors for New Memphis Institute. Sutton holds a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from Louisiana State University.

Mark Sutton, Chairman and Chief Executive Of-ficer of International Pa-per is the recipient of PaperAge’s 30th annual “Executive Papermak-er of the Year” award. An exclusive interview with Mr. Sutton will be published in the March/Apri l 2017 issue of PaperAge magazine. PaperAge selects its Executive Papermaker of the Year based on cor-porate vision, strategic objectives and strong leadership both within the individual’s com-pany and in the paper industry as a whole. The award has been an in-dustry tradition since 1988. In May of 2016, Sutton announced that IP had entered into a definitive agreement to purchase Weyerhaeus-er’s pulp business for $2.2 billion. The deal, which closed on Dec. 1, 2016, bolstered IP’s legacy pulp business with the addition of five pulp mills and two converting facilities that produce fluff pulp, softwood pulp, and specialty pulp products for a number of consumer applications including diapers, other hygiene products, tissue, and textiles. “Weyerhaeuser’s pulp business has an outstanding customer base served from low-cost, well-run assets that comple-ment our existing system and offers significant synergy opportunities,” said Sutton. “This transaction will position us as the premier global supplier of fluff pulp and will enhance our ability to generate additional free cash flow.” Also in 2016, IP acquired a newsprint mill in Madrid, Spain. IP plans to convert the mill’s relatively new paper machine during the second half of 2017 for the production of recycled containerboard with an expected capacity of 380,000 metric tonnes. Report, which was made avail-able in the fall of 2016, is the culmination of a joint effort by AF&PA Statis-

tics, the Containerboard/Kraft Sector and the Printing-Writing Sector to de-velop a comprehensive report covering the packaging papers industry. Other examples include recent enhancements to the paperboard report, which include data tables with coated and uncoated recycled board, allowing users to rec-oncile monthly and weekly data. Access to comprehensive industry data is a key benefit of AF&PA membership and we encourage members to pro-mote StatMill.org to their staff. Recent investments in technology and training partnered with member participation and feedback has established the path for the future. Access to the informa-tion managed in the statistics program helps AF&PA members compete in the marketplace and supports fact-based policy advocacy. Member engagement in the program is crucial to its success, and ensures mem-bers have access to data, reports and products t h a t s u p p o r t their business requirements. In 2016, the de-partment implemented several major initiatives to enhance our ability to provide members with accurate and timely industry data, while continuing to carefully manage the financial invest-ment in the program. AF&PA Statistics staff redesigned and updated reports for all sectors using new reporting software; created historical aggregated datas-ets reflecting published data for most grades; and deployed a new user-friendly online data entry application that will be rolled out to AF&PA members this spring. These initiatives were largely managed in-house, capitalizing on the expertise and talent of AF&PA staff. Feedback from members resulted in new reports and enhancements to existing reports. Verso Introduces NK Series of Lightweight Natural Kraft Machine Glazed PapersVerso announced the introduction of its NK Series, a family of lightweight, machine-glazed natural kraft papers manufactured using unbleached virgin fiber. The NK Series will be produced at Verso’s Androscoggin Mill in Jay, Maine, with an initial focus on foodservice and flexible packaging applications such as quick service restaurant and conces-sion bags, sandwich wraps, pouches, microwave popcorn bags, and specialty tape and waxing base. “Market demand continues to grow for unbleached fiber papers as more and more consumer brands incorporate a natural look and feel into their product packaging and foodservice papers,” said Ed Buehler, Verso Vice President of Business Development, Specialty. “Lightweight natural kraft papers are the latest addition to Verso’s industry leading portfolio of top-performing American-made specialty papers, all of which are backed by the same exceptional level of service that print-ers and converters have come to trust from Verso.” Verso will produce uncoated ma-chine-glazed natural kraft papers using unbleached fiber with basis weights

(3000 sq. ft.) ranging from 15 lb. to 40 lb. These natural kraft products will join the Androscoggin Mill’s growing portfolio of established specialty papers designed for a wide variety of foodservice, label, release liner and packaging applications. “Our new NK Series focuses on natural kraft papers with specific performance attributes such as oil and grease resis-tance, low porosity for moisture holdout, and high strength for demanding con-verting processes,” Buehler explained. “These unbleached products comple-ment our well established lightweight bleached foodservice and flexible pack-aging papers, and provide us with an excellent base for long-term growth and development of natural kraft spe-cialty papers.” Verso is the leading North Ameri-can producer of printing and specialty papers and pulp. Sappi Limited recently announced the approval of a US$165 million capital project to expand Sappi North America’s manufacturing capabilities and flex-ibility to include a variety of consumer packaging products. The project, which involves Paper Machine No. 1 at Sappi’s Somerset Mill in Skowhegan, Maine, will increase paper production capacity to almost one million tons per year. Currently, the Somerset mill’s annual production capacity is 795,000 metric tons of publication grade paper (used for magazines, catalogs, advertising brochures, direct mail, etc.) and 525,000 metric tons of pulp.

“This move complements our long term 2020Vision strategy, which seeks opportunities to substantially increase our group EBITDA,” said Steve Binnie, CEO of Sappi Limited. “By investing in our business to pursue growing areas of demand, we can remain profitable and competitive in the global marketplace.” Mark Gardner, President and CEO of Sappi North America, said, “Somerset’s existing world class infrastructure to-gether with its talented workforce and access to high quality fiber makes the mill an excellent and obvious choice for this investment. Increasing our flex-ibility and expanding the paper mill’s capability and capacity will ensure that we continue to make superior products at Somerset for years to come.” The planned project at the Somerset Mill in Maine is expected to come online early in 2018.

International Paper received a divi-dend of $121 million from Ilim Group, IP’s joint venture partner in Russia. The dividend is based on prior year performance, and in 2016, the JV set production records at all three of its mills and realized higher sales volume due to increased demand for its products. Since inception in 2007, IP has received a total of $516 million in dividends from the Ilim JV. “This dividend reflects the significant progress we’ve made together during the past 10 years,” said Mark Sutton, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of IP. “This summer marks the 10th anniversary of our joint venture with

Ilim, and we are very pleased with the investment and the relationships we’ve forged as we work together to create an even better business. The business is focused on serving customers in key markets such as Russia, Asia and Europe with a world class, low cost asset base and excellent commercial capabilities.

The JV is a great example of IP’s strategy of establishing advantaged positions in attractive markets.” A key element of Ilim’s strategy was the 2014 completion by the JV of a $1.5 billion capital investment over a five-year period at two of its three mills. This unprecedented investment in

the Russian pulp and paper industry upgraded equipment, increased produc-tion capacity and allowed for high-value product development. Additionally, the investment was a key element in the JV’s strategy to im-prove environment, health and safety standards across operations.

WestRock announced that the company recently completed all the requirements for ISO 9001: 2008 certification of its Ta-coma, Washington containerboard mill. Tacoma is the last of the thirteen WestRock containerboard mills to earn this distinction. “It’s more than just a plaque on the wall,” says Thomas Stigers, executive vice-president, con-tainerboard mills. “It’s a commitment, to ourselves and our customers.” ISO 9001: 2008 is an international set of guidelines that companies choose to meet to demonstrate they adhere to the highest standards of quality and excellence in such areas as management principles, customer relations, and the manufacturing process. “From the time the chips get to our mill to the time the paper gets to the customer, that’s all in the scope of the ISO system and we want to make sure we’re consistently at our best,” says Steve Devlin, general manager, Tacoma mill. “We want our mills to be top notch, from gate to gate,” says Stigers. “Like safety, quality is part of our com-pany culture.” The mill’s registration is good for three years and WestRock will go through annual third party audits to maintain their ISO status.

Clearwater Paper in February an-nounced plans to build a new tissue machine and related converting equip-ment for producing premium and ultra-premium grades of private label tis-sue products at a site adjacent to the company’s existing facility in Shelby, North Carolina. “Clearwater Paper’s customers are requiring more premium and ultra-premium products, which we are ad-dressing with the new capacity. These high growth segments have increased 3.5 times faster than the overall tis-sue market, and we are committed to growing with our strategic customers and positioning ourselves to add new customers,” said Linda K. Massman, President and CEO of Clearwater Paper. After an extensive analysis of the anticipated market growth, costs and financial returns of a new paper ma-chine, the company will install a 200-inch Valmet NTT tissue machine and related converting equipment. The new tissue machine will produce a variety of high-quality private label premium and ultra-premium bath, paper towel and napkin products. At full production capacity, the new tissue machine is expected to produce approximately 70,000 tons of tissue products annually. The estimated cost for the project includes approximately $283 million for the tissue machine, converting equip-ment and buildings, and approximately $57 million for the purchase and expan-

sion of an existing warehouse that will consolidate all southeastern warehous-ing in Shelby. Clearwater Paper projects that the construction of the new facility will be completed in early 2019 and fully operational in 2020. Assuming the paper machine is fully sold out, it is expected to contribute an incremental $55 to $65 million of EBITDA based on $38 to $48 million of estimated operating income. The company expects to fund the project with cash flow from operations and its revolving line of credit. Clearwater Paper intends to start construction during the second quarter of this year. Converting and warehouse operations are expected to be com-pleted during the second half of 2018, and the tissue machine is expected to be completed during the first quarter of 2019.
