Students in several 8th grade language arts classes at Charles Town Middle School participated
in a presentation by Mark Strauss, an artist, author and Holocaust survivor. Mr. Strauss says
that his goal is to bring his message of tolerance to as many people as he can. This was an
opportunity for the students to connect real life with written content. Students were excited
about seeing the program and the artwork shown. See full article

Parents,
The end of the first nine weeks is already here! Our READ 180 students have finished two
complete workshops: One on immigration and the other on natural disasters. Your kids havealso written an essay titled, If I Were a Superhero. These were so much fun to read! They
ranged from saving the world from litter and global warming, to saving the world from
fashion disasters! We are looking forward to another successful nine weeks in READ 180.
Please feel free to call or email us at any time with any questions or concerns you may have
regarding your childs progress in the READ 180 program.
Dont forget to check your childs planner and LiveGrades!
Sincerely,

Weavers English Corner
8th Grade Language Arts
t has been an excellent first marking period! Its always exciting to meet a new group of
students that Ill be working with over the next year and learning about their personalities an
skills. Weve spent much of the first marking period just getting our feet wet with the type o
material that well be working with in 8th grade English. This analytical (as opposed to
comprehension) method of reading and writing was very new to the students so I spent a
great deal of time introducing it. Weve started the year learning about the differences
between analytical writing and reading and reading and writing for comprehension. Student
have learned about thesis-driven essays and the proper components of an academic essay.
We spent several weeks practicing the different structural pieces of an essay (introduction,
body, and conclusion paragraphs, in-text citations, and other smaller areas of concern). We
have read two short stories and approached them from an analytical perspective for class
discussions, which we spend a great deal of time with in my class. All the readings have be
and will continue to be completed in class, aloud, so that I can be sure that all students are
ollowing along and achieving a basic level of comprehension. We will be moving into our firs
novel in November and continue working on fine-tuning essays and learning the academic
approach to writing about literature. Im looking forward to a great year with what seems to
be a great group of young scholars! If you have any questions, please email me anytime:
