    Panama Panama City

    82 Sunvil Traveller

Panama CityPanama City is unique, located on the shores of the Pacific Coast and only a stones throw away fromsome of Central Americas richest rainforests. It is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city, combining old Spain withmodern America; from the 16th century ruins of Panama La Viejo, to the 17th century Spanish colonialchurches of Casco Antiguo, to the Manhattan-like skyscrapers of downtown Panama.

The city was first founded in 1519 by Spanish governorPedro Arias de Avila. It became the gateway for theSpanish conquest, through which all the treasures of theInca Empire passed on their way to Europe. However, as a

result, it became an area under constant attack and in 1671Welshman Henry Morgan ransacked the city, leavingnothing but the stone remains of Panama Viejo. A fewyears later, the city was re-established five miles away atSan Felipe, also known as Casco Antiguo. Until recently

this area had fallen into neglect, although today, thebuildings are gradually being restored to their formerglory. It is now a charming district with cobblestonestreets, plazas, churches and convents, home to the

Bishops Palace, cathedral and Governors House.Panama City can easily be used as a base from which tovisit not only the city but also surrounding areas, including the nearby rainforests and the historical sightsof Coln Province.

The Panama Canal has dominated Panamasrecent history. Finally completed in 1914, thiscelebrated feat of engineering has changed thepattern of shipping forever and given Panama anew international significance and identity.

The Panama Canal relies on local heavy rainfall and there are many protected rainforests in the PanamaCity province, offering visitors ample opportunities for hiking and wildlife viewing. These include theChagres National Park, home to the Ember community, the Campana National Park and the vasttropical rainforest of the Soberana National Park.

The Soberana National Park boasts a spectacular varietyof wildlife, with over 100 mammal species and 70 reptilespecies, in addition to top birding trails, including thefamous Pipeline Road. The Rainforest Discovery Centre, is

a perfect spot for birdwatchers. This new ecotourism and

environmental educational facility, adjacent to theSoberania National Park, also offers forest trails forbirding. There are numerous hiking trails, includingsections of the original Las Cruces Trail, the former trading

route once used by the Spanish.

This narrow part of the isthmus between the Pacific andthe Atlantic was originally used by the Spanishconquistadors to transport Peruvian gold to the CaribbeanSea and so the Atlantic Ocean by mule, rather than taking

the treacherous and lengthy journey around Cape Horn. Inthe late 19th Century the French first made an ill-fatedattempt to construct the canal but were defeated mainlydue to diseases such as malaria and yellow fever. TheAmericans eventually successfully completed it in 1914,and controlled both the canal and vast tracts of land eitherside until 1977, when the Torrijos Carter Treaties pavedthe way for the transition of control to Panama in 1999.

Approximately 80 kilometers long, the canal uses a systemof locks to raise ships from sea level to the artificial LakeGatun (26m above sea level), cutting through the rockyhills of the Continental Divide. The water used in the lockscomes from the River Chagres that feeds Lake Gatun.Visitors can experience the canal by boat by taking either apartial transit (half day) or a full transit (a full day tourtaking in the whole canal) which take place on set dayseach month. The Visitors' Centre at Miraflores Lock alsooffers both a good insight into the construction of the

canal, and a wonderful view of the huge container shipspassing through the Miraflores Lock.

    Useful Notes

Did you know? Over 14,000 vessels use the

    canal each year.

The cruise ship, the CrownPrincess, paid the highest tollever to transit the canal atover 76,000.

A ship travelling from NewYork to San Francisco saves7,872 miles - and a lot of time -using the Panama Canalinstead of sailing around thetip of South America.

Each time a vessel transits thecanal, 202,000 m of water ispassed from Lake Gatun intothe ocean.

    90 Sunvil Traveller

The Archipelago of San Blas - Kuna YalaThe San Blas archipelago is an unspoiled paradise consisting of nearly 400 beautiful, palm-fringedislands, of which only 51 are inhabited. Extending 200 miles along the Caribbean coast, from ColnProvince to the Colombian border, it has a population of approximately 50,000 Kuna Indians.

The Kuna - a fiercely independent, indigenous community -has resisted change to its culture ever since the Spanishinvasion over 500 years ago. Today this is an autonomousprovince with its own laws, language, customs and culture, governed by the Kuna General Congress. Each of the 49communities is led by a political and spiritual leader who,

with his counsellors, makes political decisions and managessocial affairs. The Kuna women take great pride in theirappearance, decorating themselves with gold nose ringsand bands of beads on their arms and legs and wearingclothes decorated with colourful, individually-designedapplique, know as molas.

Today, the Kuna still live and work in much the same wayas they did in pre-Columbian times, relying heavily onplantains, coconuts and fish both for their diet and mainsource of income. Naturally tourism, albeit very controlled,is starting to play an increasingly significant role, giving

visitors a fascinating and unique cultural experience. Dailyexcursions include snorkelling, visits to local communities, river trips and jungle walks. Note that scuba diving isprohibited and that you will be charged for takingphotographs of the Kuna Indians ($1 per photograph).

Accommodation in San Blas is basic yet comfortable. Thelodges are generally small - a handful of wooden, thatchedcabins each simply furnished with bed, bathroom andporch with hammock. Electricity is available for a few hourseach evening but it is recommended to take a torch. Cabinsare cooled by sea breezes. Meals are served at set times ofthe day often signalled by the sound of a conch shell. Freshfish is the main ingredient and there is no choice just aset meal. The region is reached by early morning daily flightfrom Panama City. The flight is on a small plane and takesabout 50-70 minutes (depending on the number of islandson which the plane touches down en route).

Positioned a short 15 minute boat journey from Achutupovillage, Akwadup Lodge has a remote and peaceful settingon a small island. There are 7 rustic cabaas, all on stiltswhich overlook the ocean and idyllic palm trees with aboard walk connecting them to the mainland. The cabaasare ensuite (with shower) and feature double or twin bedswith mosquito net, a fan and a balcony with hammocks to

relax in and watch the sunset.

Activities include snorkelling and Kuna community villagetours. Fishing can be booked and paid for locally.

The rustic and simple setting of the lodge adds to theadventure. For those wanting a better understanding ofthe Kuna culture and a peaceful relaxing stay, this lodge isrecommended for a stay of 2 or more nights.

    Panama Guidelines

IMPORTANT NOTEPanama is a fascinating country filled with avariety of stunning landscapes, steeped inrich cultural traditions and home to anabundance of wildlife. However, due to thedominance of the Panama Canal and pastpolitical instability, it can be said thattourism is in its infancy, offering a wonderfully

    real experience for adventurous travellers.

CurrencyThe US dollar is the official currency inPanama although it is still often referred toas the Balboa (PAB). The Balboa has exactlythe same value as the US dollar(approximately $1.50 to the 1 at the time ofpublication) and the two are completelyinterchangeable. However there are noBalboa banknotes only coins. Please notethat in San Blas and some other remotelocations there are no ATMs and it is notalways possible to pay by credit card.

VisasUK passport holders do not require visas tovisit Panama for stays up to 90 days. Please ensure you have at least 6 months to

run on your passport from the time of arrivalinto Panama. Please also take a couple ofphotocopies of the main page of yourpassport with you.

UK passport holders are permitted to enterthe United States (including when in transit)without a visa under the Visa Waiverprogramme for 90 days or less from theirarrival date (see ESTA information below).

A machine-readable passport will be requiredin order to travel visa free. A machinereadable passport can generally be identifiedby the presence of two typeface lines andnumbers (with chevrons >>>) printed at thebottom of the page displaying your photoand personal details. If you are in any doubtas to whether or not your passport is a

machine-readable passport, you shouldcheck with the UK Passport office.

Electronic System for TravelAuthorisation ( ESTA)The USA government has enforced changesto its visa-waiver programme meaningtravellers (including transit passengers) willbe required to apply for authorisation totravel under the scheme before arriving atthe airport. The changes, which came intoeffect in January 2009 will affect allpassport holders from the 34 countriescurrently participating in the visa-waiverscheme, including UK passport holders.Further details will be supplied at the timeof booking.

    Biometric passports

There is a requirement by the US authoritiesthat passports issued on or after October 262006 must be biometric.

Your current passport will remain valid untilits expiry date. Machine-readable passportswith a digital image will continue to meetthe criteria of the Visa Waiver Programme(VWP) and most British Citizens will notrequire a US visa.

LanguageSpanish is the official language. Howeverthere are 14 local languages and dialects.English is not widely spoken outsidePanama City and a basic grasp of Spanishwill be beneficial. However communicationwith Panamanians is not normally difficult asthey will often go out of their way to help.

Vaccinations / HealthAlways check with your doctor / practicenurse as to the latest health requirementsno later than four weeks before departure.

Yellow Fever Vaccination certificates may berequired if entering Panama from a countrywith a known outbreak.Typhoid, Tetanus, Hepatitis A, Diptheria and

Polio vaccinations are generally advised, aswell as a course of anti-malaria tablets ifappropriate. A Yellow Fever Vaccination mayalso be recommended for visiting areassuch as San Blas.

Be careful to reduce mosquito bites by usinggood skin repellent and wearing long sleeveshirts and trousers to cover otherwiseexposed part of your body. In places such asSan Blas and Bocas del Toro it is advisableto wear a hat and strong sun block as thesun is very intensive and many journeys aremade in open-top boats.

The heat and humidity of the tropics makesyou sweat profusely and can also make youfeel lethargic. To avoid cramps and heatexhaustion it is important to maintain a high

fluid intake. Although it is claimed that waterin Panama is potable, we recommend youuse bottled water (even for brushing yourteeth) with a seal that has not been broken.

Food & DrinkPanamanian cuisine reflects its ethnicdiversity, comprising of a mixture of LatinAmerican staple foods, such as rice andbeans, combined with West Indian flavoursand European, Chinese and Indianinfluences. Panamas national dish isSancocho, a spicy chicken and vegetablestew. Pasties (empanadas) and deep-friedyucca stuffed with chicken or beef(carimanolas), are delicious and often soldon the roadside. Fish is in abundance, andrice and plantains are served with mostdishes. The average cost of a three course

meal is approximately $25 per personexcluding drinks, although dining in moreupmarket restaurants can cost anything upto $50+ per person. Panamanianrestaurants, across the country, serve goodinexpensive set meals (comida corriente) foronly $3 to $4 per person. Excellent locallagers include Balboa or Panama. Expect topay about $1 for a beer. Exotic fruit juicesare plentiful in addition to delicious freshcoconut juice.

AccommodationWherever possible, we have sought toinclude the more characterful, charming,locally-owned properties in Panama. However, it should be noted that thecountry has a limited supply of good hotels/ lodges. They are mostly simple properties

offering basic facilities and a service whichcan, at times, be slow and indifferent. Thisis not due to a lack of friendliness, butrather a reflection of a reserved nature andlack of training.

Please note that, away from Panama cityand nearby beaches, Panama is not asuitable country to choose if you are lookingfor mostly luxurious accommodation. Thereis no official class or star system foraccommodation, but the properties featuredby us are of an acceptable European level.Where more basic accommodation is used, this is pointed out in the individual propertydescriptions.

Weather / When to goPanama has a tropical climate which variesaccording to altitude, location and season. With the exception of the highlands, it hasan average year-round temperature of 30Cand a high level of humidity (average 80%).The best time to visit Panama is during thedry season from December to April,

although short heavy downpours are alwaysto be expected on the Caribbean sideduring this time.

The Panama Province enjoys hot sunnydays, clear blue skies and little (if any) rainduring the dry season. The AzueroPeninsula has a hot and dry climate duringthe dry season with an average temperatureof 27C. El Valle boasts a year-round, spring-like climate with an average temperature of18C, plenty of sunshine and frequent butlight showers.

Similarly Boquete, set in the CordilleraCentral mountain range (at approximately1000m above sea level), enjoys a verycomfortable, humidity-free climate yearround. The average temperature is 18C and

nights are cool. The climate in the ChiriquArchipelago is mostly sunny withtemperatures from 24-31C during the dryseason. Between April and mid December, expect afternoon showers. The climate onthe Caribbean Coast, including Bocas delToro, Coln and San Blas, is moreinconsistent and there is not such a cleardistinction between the dry and wetseasons. The dry season fluctuates betweenseveral days of sustained sunshine withseveral days of rain. February, March,September and October are the driermonths in this region.

TimePanama is five hours behind GreenwichMean Time.

Internal FlightsTravelling around Panama requiresconsiderable patience as internal flights canbe a bit chaotic and delayed. There are oftenno terminal screens indicating flightdepartures so it is important to listen carefullyto announcements and to keep asking airportstaff if your flight is ready to depart!

Panama has two internal airlines, Aeroperlas(TACA) and Air Panama, which operate fromPanamas domestic airport, AeropuertoMarcos A. Gelabert, in the Albrook area ofPanama City. The planes are generally small, propeller aircraft seating between 12 - 40passengers (depending on the route) andseats are not allocated. Soft rucksacks/bagsare preferred to hard suitcases as these canbe easily manipulated into small plane

holds. There is a strict luggage allowance ofonly 11kg / 25lb per person for hold luggageon all flights except those to and from David& Bocas del Toro from Panama City theluggage allowance for these flights is 13.5kg/ 30lbs. The carry on allowance is 2kg / 5lbs.

You may also be asked to state your bodyweight at check-in! Charges may applyshould you exceed your luggage allowanceof approximately $1per extra lb, howeverexcess luggage is only carried at thediscretion of the airline. It is also possible toleave excess luggage with our ground agentin Panama City or to have it couriered tomainland destinations such as Panama City,Boquete, and David. However please notewe can not accept liability for the contentsof the suitcase. We suggest that you use apadlock if you have any concerns.

Driving / Car HireSelf-drive is recommended in the westernregions of Panama as it allows greaterflexibility to visit the surrounding areas of ElValle, the Azuero Peninsula and Boquete. The main roads are in good condition andsome of the best we have seen in CentralAmerica. The roads are generally asphalted

and potholes are few and far between.Signage is generally poor but you will beprovided with full directions from ourground agent upon collection of the vehicle. There are occasional tolls on the Pan-American Highway (approximately$1/vehicle). There is relatively little trafficonce outside the cities of Panama City andColn. Note that driving in Panama Citycentre is not advisable as it is heavilycongested. Elsewhere, driving is generallycivilized although do watch out for thebrightly coloured, Red Devil buses (LosDiablos Rojos), which have a reputation fordriving erratically and at high speed. Fuel isrelatively inexpensive at approximately$3.10/gallon.

We generally recommend a Group C vehicle,

Toyota Yaris or similar. We have selected SixtRent-a-Car as our supplier in Panama.Vehicles may be picked up in one place anddropped off at another. Drop off charges inthe event of returning your vehicle to adifferent point from which it was collectedare included in the cost of your holiday.

A UK driving licence (international ispreferred), passport and credit card arerequired when collecting the vehicle alongwith a security deposit. Check the car overcarefully and note all dents and scratchesbefore accepting the car. If the car isreturned with dents or scratches, or otherdamage that was not previously noted, youmay be charged or your deposit may not berefunded.

The general policy (unless advisedotherwise) is to receive the car with a fulltank of fuel and to therefore return it full ondrop off. If you forget, your credit card will becharged automatically.

Unlimited mileage, roadside breakdownassistance, local taxes and Collision DamageWaiver are included in the car hire rates.Minimum age for renting a vehicle is 23 butthere is no maximum age. The CDW coversyou for damage of your vehicle and anythird parties arising from normal use of thecar. The vehicle must be returned to theoffice on time otherwise extra charges willapply (payable locally). Reconfirm the dropoff time and place of return at the time ofcollecting your vehicle. There is an extracharge for a second driver of between $3-$5

    per day (payable locally).

As in the UK, never leave valuables in thecar such as cameras and handbags anddont leave suitcases on show as they mayattract thieves. In the event of getting aticket for speeding or other infringements,do not offer money to the highway patrolofficer. All tickets must be paidwhen you return the car. If the car is towedaway, you will have to go the highway patroloffice and a pay a fee to get your car back.

Please note that we do not recommend youdrive at night on the Pan-American Highway.
