REPORT FROM THE MANAGER: PUBLIC WORKS REPORT:Public Works has returned to regular maintenance schedules after the holidays.

The holiday decorations have been removed and stored for another year. Work continues on some minor drainage problems and road patching.PARKS AND LAKE Lake levels have fi nally changed after recent rains in the main drainage areas of

the lake. The lake level readings are now at 697.4, an increase of .6 of a foot, but still below the normal level of 700.00 foot elevation.

There will be no fi shing allowed in the area of No. 3 water crossing for the months of February, March , and April. This will allow the Crappie and other fi sh time to spawn and improve the fi sh populations in the lake.

ROADS AND BRIDGERoads were sanded during the freezing weather over the weekend of January 13,

14 and 15.A stop sign has been added at the exit of the East Gate. This was requested by

the Constable due to increased traffi c exiting Lake Kiowa and increased traffi c on County Road 211.

Don HooverPublic Works Manager

Weather has been the hottest topic of conversation over the last couple of weeks. Luckily, problems on our roads and bridges were kept to a minimum. Most of our sanding was accomplished from 10 p.m. to 1 a.m. and did not interfere with daily traffi c.

Just a reminder that no fi shing will be allowed on the creek side of #3 low water crossing during February, March and April. This will allow for the fi sh to spawn without interference from fi shermen.

Boundary, tee and hole markers have been established for a disc golf course below the dam. Most of the equipment has been received and construction will commence as soon as the weather allows.

Four wheeling in prohibited areas has been a recent problem. The horseshoe area by #2 low water crossing and the embankment below the dam have been damaged. The embankment below the dam is considered by the Corps of Engineers as part of the infrastructure of the dam; therefore, we are required to fi ll the auto ruts with a fi ller material.

The Lodge doors have been adjusted and the staining of the entranceway has been completed. Thanks to Friends of the Lodge for funding the staining project.

The Little Crow silt removal has been completed. Efforts are being made to remove the excess dirt and the equipment from that area.

Lloyd ButtsInterim Manager

January’s Weather Both Beautiful and Benefi cial

A few inches of rain add several inches to our lake. Some freezing temperatures and sunshine add up to spectacular sights.

CASA of North Texas Receives Grant

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) of North Texas, a Cooke County agency that serves abused and neglected children, recently was awarded a $10,000.00 grant from Jewelers for Children (JFC), the leading U.S. jewelry industry. The grant will be used to continue volunteer-based advocacy services for children in Cooke County.

CASA of North Texas was established in Cooke County in 1999. Since that time, the agency and its volunteers, many of whom who live at Lake Kiowa, have advocated for the needs of more than 500 abused and neglected Cooke County children.

Saturday, Jan. 13 was a cold and icy day, but our members’ spirits warmed up quickly as we planned for the new year’s activities. We decided to build upon last year’s successes, plus add some great new events. New activities include: Valentine Craft Day for Kids 8 and under; Family Movie Night; 4th 5th and 6th Grades Movie Night; and Fishin’ Food & Fun at Little Fox Pond.

Craft Days and Movie Nights can be repeated if there is enough interest and help. The LK Angler Club stocks Little Fox Pond with trout for their Trout Fest in February, and we want to take advantage of the “leftovers” the following weekend. We’ll have poles strung, provide the bait, and even have snacks for our Kiowa kids and families who want to come out for an afternoon of fun. Besides the “fi shin’ hole,” there is a great play area for the non-fi sher kids! Remember, the age limit for fi shing at Little Fox Pond is 16 and under. Please see our ad to the right to fi nd out dates and times for activities planned through Spring Break. You’ll notice that some events are for specifi c age groups, and some of them will have limited seating. Last year we were able to purchase our own disco lighting and dance fl oor equipment, so the 7th, 8th, and 9th grades will have a fun Spring Break Dance.

Lloyd Butts, acting Community Manager, attended our meeting and gave us an update on the Disc Golf Course. The Youth Advisory Committee’s

planning and efforts over the past year have fi nally paid off. We now have a professionally designed course plan (at the campground recreation area), course equipment purchased, and a schedule for installation. Lloyd reported that it should be completed by spring. Visit the Professional Disc Golf Association Web site at http://www.pdga.com to learn more about the game of disc golf and the rules. A course map will be posted at the site, and we will publish one in the CommuniQué. The Youth Action Club is purchasing some golf discs for initial outings to help get kids started, but ultimately people will want to purchase their own. We’ll try to have a grand opening celebration event when the course is ready for play. The Youth Advisory Committee and Youth Action Club want to thank Joe Brockette, Wayne Shearer, and Steve Unger for helping us with this effort.

Our second Saturday of the month meetings are open to all interested Kiowans. They are held in the Board Room at 10 a.m. following the Youth Advisory Committee meeting. We would love to see new faces and hear new ideas, and would welcome your participation.

This is the fi rst in a series of articles about Vista, Microsoft’s new Operating System. By the time this article is published, the new system will be on sale to the general public. If you buy a new PC, chances are it will have Vista installed on it.

The fi rst question for people with the Windows XP system is this: Should I upgrade to the new system? We present the following observations to help you answer that question.

What about support for Windows XP, my current system? Is it obsolete? No, it will be viable for many years to come. Microsoft’s policy on supporting a previous operating system has been that they have offered at least two years of support after a new system is released. In other words, your Windows XP should be supported in the next few years (they supported Windows 98 for over fi ve years).

Next, do you want to understand exactly what the new system is all about? We suggest taking a test drive at http://www.windowsvistatestdrive.com.

Ah, how much will all this cost? The new version of the software will set you back anywhere from $100 to a mind-boggling $400. But that is just part of the story. You might need additional hardware to support the new system. A simple way to determine that is to go to http://www.pcpitstop.com/vistareadyand have your PC take a test.

Last, but not least, is what we in the PC business call the “bleeding edge.” This is a brand new system and will have things that will not work properly. It just will; it is software on a computer. The problem might be your printer, your camera, some game or the system itself, but it will have bugs. If you like that, go ahead, but better advice is to wait six months or so and let things settle down.

If you fi nd this type of advice helpful, you should attend one of the Lake Kiowa Computer Club meetings on the second or fourth Thursday of the month at the Lodge at 7 p.m.

Leadership Lake Kiowa, sponsored by the Kiowans, held a graduation party on Jan. 19 at the home of Jan and Tom Thompson. The graduates, their spouses, and the leadership team were graciously treated by the Thompsons to a dinner and drinks at their Sequoya Cove home. The class that was composed both of old timers and newcomers said they learned much about their community and the surrounding county. They not only came out understanding and seeing fi rsthand how our community operates, but also learned what services are available to our community at large and how to access them. Plus, a good time was had by all. The graduates in the picture

My wife Marilyn and I are full time residents of Lake Kiowa since May 1, 2000 after being weekenders for over a year. We are currently in our third home and happy as can be. We so enjoy being a part of this active community and all it has to offer. In July, we celebrated our 40th wedding anniversary with a golfi ng holiday in Oklahoma. We have two married children and fortunately both families live nearby in North Richland Hills (2 blocks away from each other). Daughter Wendy and husband Brad have three boys, Nick 9, Zack 7 and Tyler 3. Son Scott and wife Valeri have a daughter Victoria 3 (defi nitely the princess in this family) she has those 3 boys wrapped around her little fi nger.

Since our arrival at Lake Kiowa I have been active in many of our committees and social opportunities at the Lake. I previously served on the POA Board for two terms and thoroughly enjoyed my tenure. The last year of my board term I served as President, before that secretary. I so enjoyed being a part of the workings of this community. In addition to the normal activities and responsibilities, I served on the Long Range Planning Committee for several years and also as chairman. I have served on East Gate Development, Ways and Means, Lodge and Tavern, Facilities Committees and am currently on the Search Committee for Community Manager. I served as a Director of the Kiowans, and am very proud of the “Leadership Lake Kiowa” classes the Kiowans developed and continue to sponsor. Marilyn and I have participated in the decorating of the Lodge, Community Room, 19th hole and dining room. We had many volunteers that have worked on these projects and would be remiss not to thank Friends of the Lodge for all the

fi nancial help, direction and enthusiasm they provided.

I have been on the Gainesville area Habitat for Humanity Board for 5 years and served as President for 2 years. We are very proud to say we have just poured the foundation for our 7th home.

I am a member of the MGA and hope to get more involved as time goes on and hopefully my game will improve.

I graduated from the University of Michigan in 1963 with a Bachelors Degree in Industrial Engineering, an MBA and started my career at Vickers in Troy, Michigan where I met Marilyn. During our years in Michigan I was President of the Rochester Arts Commission, instrumental in the creation of the new Rochester Arts Center where Marilyn and I were Co-chairmen of the annual Rochester Arts and Apple Festival. I was a YMCA Indian Guides leader, Youth Soccer coach for more years than I can remember and Head Usher and Administrative board member of our church. As a youth I was active in Boy Scouts and attained the Eagle Scout and God and Country Awards.

We moved to Kentucky with Computer Peripherals; Florida with Storage Technology, then transferred to Dallas with Rockwell Transmission Systems, which was subsequently purchased by Alcatel USA. In April 1999 I retired from Alcatel USA after a very rewarding career. My career included management of Information Systems, Materials and Manufacturing.

My hobbies include woodworking, golf, and more golf. My greatest joy is spending time here at the lake with our children, grandchildren and friends.

In case you are wondering why I would want to run for the POA Board

Bob Wickersham

I was born in the small town of McCallsburg, Iowa and raised in Des Moines. Graduated from Des Moines Technical High School. I attended Grand View and Drake University through three years of pre Engineering, Marketing and Advertising curriculum. Spent eight years in the Army National Guard and Army Reserve.

In 1959, I married my High School sweetheart Dorothy, and have said, yes dear, for the past 47 years of our marriage. We have three married daughters, and nine grandchildren.

My business career started with a small Manufacture of Heating & Air Conditioning equipment in Des Moines, Iowa. I was hired to work in the engineering department, and help design equipment. During the next three years they trained me in design as well as in sales and marketing products. I was transferred to Macomb, Illinois to take over a sales position, calling on

“again” after having done this before. It is simple – I love it!!!!! I have always attended Board Meetings even when we were week-enders, it isn’t all that often that we are afforded the opportunity to help make where we live the best it can be. That was one of the reasons in 2005 I obtained my Realty License, I can’t think of a reason why anyone would not want to live here.

Lastly, I believe my previous leadership, management and fi nancial background continue to be a good foundation to help our POA Board grow and maintain our wonderful community in an organized, ethical and open-minded manner. I would consider it an honor to serve you again on the POA Board. Thank you.

A/C contractors. I joined Rheem Mfg. Co. in Chicago and during my ten year career, was territory salesman, manager of the direct Chicago branch, South West Region Sales mgr. and fi nally the National Sales Mgr. for Rheem.

Then I made the most important business decision that I had ever made. To go into business for myself. In 1983 Dorothy and I sold everything that wasn’t nailed down. We opened our fi rst warehouse as a Distributor of Air Conditioning products selling to the A/C contractor. Since then we have become the exclusive American Standard Distributor of Heating & Air Conditioning equipment with seven warehouses and offi ces in Texas, Okalahoma, and Louisiana.

Dorothy and I have recently retired and the business is now in the capable hands of our daughter, Michelle. Her sisters are the other stock holders.

Since retirement I have been involved in the Gainesville area Habitat for Humanity and now serving as the President. We are members of the First Baptist Church in Gainesville and also attend our Chapel at Lake Kiowa. My hobbies are tennis, golf, hunting and fi shing.

In Lake Kiowa, we have served on the Couples golf committee. I have served as Vice President of the Men’s Golf Association in 2005 and as President in 2006. I am a member of the Kiowans and the Angler & Conservation Club, as well as serving on the POA facilities committee.

Dorothy and I feel we have found heaven on earth in Lake Kiowa. I would like to do my part to carry on the tradition of a friendly and caring community. If elected I will devote the time necessary to fulfi ll the position and make a difference.

Lake Kiowa Resident

Over 30 Years Experience

My husband, James, and I bought a weekend place here in 1990, and moved here permanently in 2005. My husband and I are members of the First United Methodist Church in Gainesville, and I belong to the Kiowa Woman’s Club, and am on the board of the Cooke County Republican Women’s Club. Our family loves Lake Kiowa so much that both of our daughters and their families (including 6 of our 9 grandchildren) now live here also.

While you will notice below that I have a strong background in the law, please note also that I also have the training and common sense that are required to successfully run a business. If you elect me to the Board of Directors I will use all of my training and abilities to help assure that Lake Kiowa continues to be the wonderful place to live and play that it currently is.

During the first twenty years of our marriage I worked (1) with my husband in two personally-owned businesses, (2) as a secretary, and (3) as a stay-at-home mom, involving myself in such activities as the Parent-Teacher-Association and Cub Scouts.

In 1979 I graduated from the University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Business Administration, then in 1982 I graduated from the University of Toledo School of Law with a Juris Doctorate after serving two years on the Law Review. I am now licensed by the State Bar of Texas and the U. S. District Court, Northern District of Texas.

After working for several years as an attorney, I was appointed as a Municipal Court Judge for the City of Dallas in 1991, and served in that position until 2004.

I have served as a Board Member for the State Bar of Texas, Municipal Judges Section, Dallas County Bail Bond Board and North Central Texas Legal Services Foundation.

My extensive continuing judicial and legal education has qualified me for membership in the State Bar College. I have served as a Discussion Leader at the National Judicial College, Moderator at a University of Houston Law Center seminar, and on the staff at Texas Municipal Courts Education Center. Additionally, my articles have been published in the State Bar Section Report, Municipal Judges Section and the Texas Municipal Courts Education Center annual course materials.

Family: I have been married to my wife Linda for the past forty years. We have owned our house on Kiowa Drive East for over ten years. After falling in love with Lake Kiowa, we decided to make it our permanent home two and

I graduated from Texas A & M in 1959 with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering and a commission in the U. S. Air Force. I spent three years in the service, the last two in Okinawa.

After the Air Force I went to work for U. S. Gypsum Company at the Sweetwater, Texas Plant. I worked as a department head before being transferred to New Braunfels, Texas, to Genoa, Ohio, and then to Jacksonville, Florida. I was then promoted to a plant manager training position in the division office at Atlanta, Georgia.

From there I went back to Sweetwater, Texas as plant manager in 1977. The plant had a major expansion while I was there making it at the time one of the largest Sheetrock gypsum wallboard plants in the world.

Why would anyone run for a position on the board? Because of all the dear friends I have made here, my desire to serve and I love Lake Kiowa! It would be my pleasure to support the residents as a member of the POA Board of Directors.

Jim and I moved here February, 2003. I had already retired from IBM with 25 years of service and Jim was working from home. We are blessed to have a son and his family. We have 2 grandchildren, Justin and Bailee. I enjoy attending their sporting events and just being Grandmother! Now our home is filled with 2 cats, they allow us to share the house with them. We are new owners of 7 cows that are making their way into my heart. I grew up in west Texas and attended Texas Tech University, majoring in English and Speech. I enjoy boating, reading, playing cards, Bunco, knitting, golf, traveling, wildlife and nature.

While at IBM, I was in middle management for the majority of my career. I have extensive experience in Finance, Human Resources and Equal Opportunity Compliance, serving as Equal Opportunity Compliance Officer. As a manager, I was

Robert W. Skupin

Linda S. Moore

one-half years ago. Linda and I are both life long members of the Methodist Church. We have two daughters, both graduates of the University of Oklahoma. Our two son- in- laws are both graduates of Texas Tech.

Education: I hold a B.S. degree in Business Management from Louisiana Tech University. I also attended Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, and Centenary College in Shreveport, Louisiana. I have always had a strong interest in education, and have served on the school board for three years. I was president of the school board for one year.

Work Experience: After finishing college I enlisted in the Air Force, serving a total of six months on active duty and one-half years in the reserves. I began my career with Travelers Insurance Company in the audit department. Travelers was eventually purchased by Citigroup Corporation. I retired from Citigroup Corporation with thirty-four years of service. I held the following positions: audit manager, accounting manager, service manager, and underwriting support manager. I held an officer level position with Citigroup at the time of my retirement.

Lake Kiowa: I have served on the Lake and Parks Committee for the past six years. I have been chairman of the committee for the past two years. I am a member on the Men’s Golf Association, Kiowans, Friends of the Lodge, Lake Kiowa Tennis Club, and Lake Kiowa Anglers and Conservation Club. I recently completed the Lake Kiowa Leadership Kiowa IV course.

Interest: It is my strong belief that improvements to our lake and parks are extremely important. This will assist in preserving the recreational quality of life we have all grown to enjoy, as well as, help maintain or improve our real estate values here at Lake Kiowa.

After 23 years in manufacturing, I was promoted to a senior engineering position in our corporate office in Chicago. We built or expanded wallboard plants in Alabama, Pennsylvania, Oregon, Indiana, California, Thailand and Mexico; and ceiling tile plants in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Mississippi.

I worked as a registered engineer in Ohio, Florida, Texas and Illinois.

My wife Janis and I have been married 43 years. We live directly out of the east gate of Lake Kiowa. I play golf frequently and enjoy horseback riding with my wife. We appreciate the Lodge restaurant, the library, and swimming at the beach.

I believe I bring experience in the area of cost control that I learned in manufacturing during the very tough competitive times of 60’s,and 70’s. Good engineering and rational thinking were key even in the smaller projects that plants undertook to reduce costs. Plant manager and department head ratings and bonuses were tied to cost reduction plans and achievements. These plans included capital expenditures. When the new cost reduction projects were in operation, the promised savings were included in the annual goals.

One of the key components to cost reduction is work reduction.

I think many of the cost reduction principles above could bear fruit in Lake Kiowa.

responsible for hiring, all aspects of employee compensation, employee and management training and development and when necessary employee termination. The business side of my responsibilities included managing budgets in excess of $30M annually and providing staffing for technical support services organizations in excess of 300 employees. All was provided with a high level of customer satisfaction.

In addition to my formal schooling, I have over 1000 hours of IBM Professional and Management education. I also achieved certification as an ISO9000 Auditor and Tickit Lead Auditor.

Prior to IBM, I worked in customer support for 3M Business Product Sales, Inc.

I was on the Board of Directors for the Leukemia Society of North Texas; chairing the registration process and Ride for Life fund raiser and achieved year to year growth.

I am very involved with Kiowa Woman’s Club. During 2004-2005, I was a co-chair for the Gourmet Department, participating on the Board of Directors. During 2005-2006, I co-led a Gourmet group. Now, in 2006-2007 I developed the new position as Web Master for KWC and am on the current board. Being Web Master, I have had the opportunity to support the president (I serve at her pleasure), organize and maintain information on our POA web pages and interface with the staffs at the Communique, Lodge and POA office. I have been a Docent at the Frank Buck Zoo, the neighborhood canvasser for The Leukemia Society and American Heart Association. I am a member of the WGA and a CASA volunteer.

I am a results-oriented individual with organizational, problem solving, customer satisfaction and community relations skills.

We have received many benefits while living here at Lake Kiowa, and I look forward to serving the community as a member of the POA Board.

Fron the President ...

Before we leave the holiday season, I have fantastic news to report and thanks to give. Friends of the Lodge and the Angler Club have each funded the purchase of a Wise Man fi gure to help complete the Nativity. On behalf of the Kiowa Woman’s Club, I want to thank these two organizations for their generosity in responding to our request for assistance in completing the Nativity. Next year, I think we might all need to look closely at one of the Wise Men who could be holding a rod and reel. Thanks again to the two organizations who answered the call for help.

The January meeting was informative with ideas on helping us keep our brains active as we age and tips for helping get our children and grandchildren using their brains to the fullest potential. For those of you who wanted to purchase more of Pam Schiller’s books, you can go to her Web site: www.schillereducationalresources.com to order.

Start your February off right by joining us at 10 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 2 at Charolette Loncar’s home at 928 Kiowa Drive East to hear Linda Fite review Anne Tyler’s latest book, “Digging to America.” Jan Johnson and Nelda Toal will be the co-hostesses. This is one of those can’t-miss events.

Arts & Crafts will have a “Bead My Valentine” meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 6 at 10 a.m. in the Southwest Room at the Lodge. Becky Branham will be bringing tons of beads to choose from to allow you to design your own one-of-a-kind bracelet. The cost will be $5 per bracelet. Call Betty Sue Vickery, Chair of Arts & Crafts, at 612-3422 for more information.

Charolette Loncar will once again be hosting this month. On Feb. 19 at 10 a.m., the Garden & Nature group will meet at her home at 928 Kiowa Drive East to hear Shana Powell of the Morton Museum tell us about pioneer gardens in Cooke County. This should be a terrifi c meeting.

The Bridge Group will continue their Open Play Tournament on Feb. 1 and Feb. 15 at the Lodge at 12:30 p.m. Call Peggy Carpenter at 665-44294 or Jan Thompson at 665-6651 for questions or

more information.Gourmet groups will be meeting on

Feb. 20 with the Mid-Atlantic States as the featured region of the month. Contact Genny Koziol at 665-0141 or Catharine Moss at 665-5488 for further information.

The Canasta Group will meet in the Southwest Room of the Lodge at 1 p.m. on Feb. 27. Please come and discover or rediscover the fun of Canasta.

Bible Study will meet at 10 a.m. on Feb. 27 at Carol Hawkins home at 124 Pawnee Trail North. Mary Frances Covington will continue instructing us into the book of Hosea.

Our February meeting comes early in the month. Be sure to join us on Feb. 8 as Doc Gibbs will be here to sing the best of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Johnny Mathis and Nat King Cole. If this doesn’t get us in the Valentine spirit, we don’t have a spirit. We will also be honoring the Mid-Atlantic States of Delaware, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania.

The Pictorial Directory will be available at our February meeting as well. Carmel Miserak and LaVerta Burhans along with their committee

pulled all the pictures and information together in record time. Please plan to pick up your directory at this meeting. You can still purchase one for $5 each. We printed 500 and they are going fast.

We hope you attended the Kiowa Woman’s Club-sponsored Candidates Forum on Jan. 28 for the six candidates running for the POA Board. Please be sure you vote when you receive your ballot in the mail in February.

I would like to close with a quote from another unknown author: “True friendship is sitting together in silence and feeling like it was the best conversation you’ve ever had.”

This month we have a program just made for setting the mood for Valentine’s Day. Doc Gibbs will be here singing his tribute to America’s troubadours of swing and romance. Come hear Doc as he sings popular songs from the forties to the seventies – songs by male artists whose sounds dominated the airwaves and dance halls. He will cover songs of love and losing, songs of bop and blues, and songs of swing. This show promises to be motivating and inspiring. You will go away smiling as “Doc just makes you feel good.”

The birdbath was frozen and so were the streets. Garden & Nature was canceled in January because of the ice. There was so much disappointment among the members that we are going to try to reschedule our presenters for the March meeting. Stay tuned for updates.

The Feb. 19 meeting will be in the home of Charolette Loncar at 928 Kiowa Drive East. Shawna Powell of the Morton Museum will tell us about the history of garden clubs in Cooke County. It should be very informative to old and new members alike. Plan on coming and bring a friend.

January Gourmet certainly set the stage for the area highlighted this month. With the weekend ice storm, the weather was very representative of the Rocky Mountain States. Although three Gourmet Groups canceled due to the below freezing temperatures, seven Groups did meet on Jan. 16, before the sleet and snow arrived.

Two groups changed their plans and went to the Lodge, where they were met with excellent lunches and great fellowship. The Out to Lunch/Shopping Group traveled to Denton and enjoyed food at Hannah’s, a bistro just off the square, then shopped at several stores. A lobster/cheese melt sandwich, fi sh tacos, great Caesar Salad and Portobello Tempura with Asian Salad were only four of the many entrees these adventuresome ladies tried. The 1-Hour Group journeyed to Diverso’s and had baked potatoes, salad and wonderful brownies. Idaho, one of the Rocky Mountain States, was honored with baked potatoes combined with salad and fantastic brownies to fi nish. The ladies spent three hours talking and laughing and enjoying being out after the icy

weekend. Culinary Gourmet went to the Pub after meeting at the Kilcrease home for appetizers and drinks. Group Seven postponed their meeting for a week and feel sure there will be a spring thaw by then.

Group Eight met at Joyce Manner’s home and enjoyed an appetizer of Blue Corn Tortillas and Dip, Chicken Vegetable Soup, Paula Deem’s Sour Cream Butter Biscuits, cornbread, and wonderful carrot cake. These ladies really cook! The Sour Cream Butter Biscuits were divine and there are only three ingredients in the recipe: Cut 2 sticks of butter (room temperature) into 2 cups of Self-Rising Flour. Then add 1 Cup of Sour Cream and mix. Drop by spoonful into mini muffi n pans and bake at 400 F. for 8 to 10 minutes. Yield: 3 dozen. Thanks to Joyce Manner for sharing this recipe.

Next month Gourmet will decorate the tables for Woman’s Club and meet on Feb. 20 to honor the Mid-Atlantic States.

The activity calendar is starting to pick back up after a short breather during the holidays.

During this slow time we have tried to make the necessary improvements to help us keep the residents that visit us often happy and hopefully get some new ones coming in.

We have worked very hard on organizing, cleaning, and repairing all the broken equipment in the kitchen. We still have a little ways to go, but I believe that we are heading in the right direction.

Chef Jarrod Berger has been a welcome addition to the staff. We have

gotten a lot of positive feedback about the food that the kitchen has been putting out lately. We are going to continue with this trend. The menus that he has been coming up with for the monthly clubs have all been wonderful.

We have a new Administrative Assistant; Ben Hoagland has taken the position. He has been working for the Lodge for six years and is going to be very useful to us in the offi ce. Ben knows most of the members, so his transition into the offi ce should prove to be very helpful.

We need a few more waiters and a few more persons in the kitchen and we will be fully staffed. We have a good crew here and hopefully we can slow down the turnover rate so that we can continue to produce quality food and service.

BB KARAOKE SING/DANCE AT LODGE FEBRUARY 3 AND 23

Back by popular demand! Bill and Miriam Beebe will host a free Karaoke Sing/Dance at the Lodge on Saturday, Feb. 3, and Friday, Feb. 23 from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Limited menu and bar will be available in the Assembly Room on a pay-as-you-go basis, or enjoy a full dinner meal in the Dining Room, and then join us in the Assembly Room. Everyone is invited to come out and enjoy some good singing to Karaoke CDs and a variety of CD music for your dancing pleasure. For more information, call Bill Beebe, 665-5292.

More than 100 people attended the Karaoke Sing/Dance festivities at the Lodge Saturday night, Jan. 13, despite the icy blast of winter weather visited upon Lake Kiowa that weekend. Many guests had dinner in the Dining Room and then enjoyed an evening of singing, dancing, and camaraderie in the Assembly Room. The Lodge staff was very accommodating in setting up the tables and a bar in the main room.

Bill and Miriam Beebe hosted the event, playing a variety of dance music as well as Karaoke songs for all to enjoy. This was such a successful event, we hope to plan another evening for dancing and singing in February. Watch the Information Board at the gates for the dates and times.

Wow, what a winter this has been! Summertime temperatures one day and ice on the ground the next. I guess that is the luxury of living in Texas. Even with the change in temperatures, some anglers are still getting out on the lake to fi nd those big bass. Several of our members who attended the January club meeting told us they have caught fi sh over fi ve pounds. They are really trying to break that lake record Wayne Kyle set back on Feb. 28, 2006. Good luck to those guys and anyone else who may give it a try.

For those of you who are not aware, our annual Trout Fest is coming up on Saturday, Feb. 17. We are doing things a little different this year. The fi rst 100 kids that show up will receive a new rod and reel. We will stock Little Fox Pond the week before with trout. Children 16 and under will need to show up a little before noon so they will be sure to get a good spot. The fi shing competition will begin at noon and last until 2 p.m. The children will be divided into three age groups and awards will be given for each age group each hour. The LKACC will provide bait and poles for those of you who do not have one. Hot dogs and drinks will be available for everyone to enjoy as well. Be sure and mark your calendars and make plans to bring your kids, grandkids or any kids that love to fi sh.

Our tournament season is just around the corner. Our fi rst will be held in March. The dates have not been published yet,

but we will let you know as soon as they are. If you like to tournament fi sh but do not have a boat, or your boat dock still doesn’t have enough water under it, please come to the sign up. If an angler has an empty back seat, they would be glad to take you along. These anglers are always happy to meet and get to know new anglers.

The LKACC membership voted at the January meeting to change our club meeting night from the second Wednesday to the third Thursday of the month. Therefore, the February meeting will be on Thursday, Feb. 15 at 7 p.m. in the Southwest Room at the Lodge. The Club is looking for new offi cers/committee members. If you are interested in serving, please feel free to contact one of our current board members. Any member in good standing is eligible to serve and to vote. Offi cers will be voted into offi ce at our February meeting.

Our membership drive will be kicking off in March. LKACC membership is just $15 for the entire family. Your membership and any additional donations will help our organization continue to focus on children’s events, lake health and improving our lakes assets. If you would like more information on joining the LKACC, please feel free to visit the LKACC page on the Lake Kiowa Web site at http://www.lakekiowatx.com. This page is full of details ranging from membership information to tournament information and general fi shing information. We would also like to invite you to attend our next club meeting and meet some of the great anglers.

In closing this month, we would like to extend our deepest sympathy to the family of our fellow LKACC member

Some members have wondered why we recommend keeping carts on the paths in the winter even though the course is dry and the Bermuda fairways are dormant.

The USGA answered this question in one of its publications.“The Bermuda grass on our course cannot repair itself from traffi c during this

time of the year when it is dormant. Keeping carts on the path helps to minimize the beaten-down, worn-out appearance so often associated with Bermuda grass fairways in late winter.” (USGA Green Section Record, January 2007)

We use handicapped fl ags to help the players that need help. We ask you not to abuse the system by carrying non-handicapped players with you and taking them to their ball. This just creates more traffi c on these fairways that may or may not recover in the spring.

Remember, what we preserve today, we will be able to enjoy tomorrow. Thanks for your help and understanding.

Superintendent’s Report . . .DID YOU KNOW . . . The purpose of the Handicap System is to make the game of golf more enjoyable

by enabling players of differing abilities to compete on an equal basis.A Handicap Index is portable from course to course, as well as from one set of

tees to another set of tees on the same course. A player converts his Handicap Index to a Course Handicap based on the Slope Rating of the set of tees he is going to play.

When Men vs. Men, Women vs. Women, or Women vs. Men from different tees or Men vs. Women from the same tees each player must fi rst fi nd their handicap from the set of tees they are playing by utilizing the Slope Rating of the correct gender of the tee they are playing. Then in order to compete on an equal basis the individual who is playing from the higher Course Rating will receive additional strokes equal to the difference between Ratings, with .5 or greater rounded upward.

Rally For A Cure Committee® Gets Early Start

Yolanda Arronté, President of WGA, told the group at the January meeting that the main objective for 2007 is to PLAY GOLF AND HAVE FUN! The group was informed of some interesting changes that will take place this year. The changes should make it a fun year for all the ladies to participate and enjoy golf.

One of the fi rst changes was to have the Pledge of Allegiance at the beginning of the meeting and an invocation before lunch. Play day winners for the previous month will be announced and awarded their prizes at the WGA meeting each month.

There will still be a Scramble the fi rst Wednesday of the month and the rest of the month at Wednesday Play days the WGA will try to play a game where you can record your own score.

Information for The Red River, Texoma and Central Texas Play days will be available on the Web site. You

WGA NEWS

will be able to fi nd the address and amount of the entry fee and

when to mail. Your handicap will also be on the Web site. More ladies

are wanted to participate in these fun tournaments. At our Scramble and meeting there

will not be a “head table.” This will allow the teams to sit together during our luncheon.

A special WGA e-mail list is being set up and you will not receive any e-mail that is not WGA related. If you do not want to be a part of the e-mail list, you must notify Audrene Robison to delete your name. This list will be generated from your e-mail address on your WGA Application Form.

You will also be able to submit your luncheon reservation on the Web site each month.

A discussion was held concerning the Ringer Board. Last year we had 210 members and only 85 signed up to do this. Less than one-half of these remembered to fi ll in the low scores. Ringer Board will be discontinued and the ladies voted to do “Most Improved”

WGA NEWS

The weather outside was certainly frightful and a fi re would really have been delightful as the Rally for a Cure® Committee held its fi rst 2007 meeting to begin preparation for the Oct. 4 golf tournament. The 9 a.m. meeting on Jan. 15 at the Lodge generated many new ideas and plans were discussed that are sure to enhance this event. Mother Nature covered Kiowa with a thin sheet of ice on the roads and beautiful frost, sleet and icicles seemed to be dangling everywhere, but these gals held their meeting as scheduled. Kiowa residents know this is a dedicated group.

LaVona Duryea is the new Chair, replacing Barbara Cole who did such a wonderful job for the past two years. The Rally contributed over $50,000 last year to the Susan G. Komen Foundation for Research to help fi nd the cure for breast cancer. All newcomers should be aware you’ll hear a lot about this in the coming months. The Committee in

the last fi ve years has contributed over $127,000 to this worthy cause. The fi ve returning Committee members, LaVona Duryea, Fran Adams, Maureen Anselmi, Catharine Moss and RosaLeigh Wood enlisted four new members this year. They are Elaine Blackwell, Regina Carnley, Marcia Hammond and Bari Hankins. The new members are great additions who came to share wonderful new ideas, information and plans. Welcome to you all!

It’s only January and Marion Hoefl ein and Noble Moss have agreed to sponsor the Rally Lunch again this year. First State Bank Marketing Director Karen Cook was on board the following day. The bank will sponsor the fund-raising dinner the evening before the Rally. Thanks so very much for all your support through the years. This is a great beginning for the 2007 Rally For The Cure®!

Paulette Andrews and Genny Koziol encouraged 9-Hole players to join their group and also presented their tournament information and asked for help from the membership with these functions. Information can be obtained from either of these ladies.

It sounds like a fun year ahead for all the lady golfers at Lake Kiowa. The next luncheon meeting will be at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 7 at the Lodge. Our Play days will begin with a Scramble followed by a luncheon meeting the fi rst Wednesday in March.

HAVE YOUR TREES TRIMMED BY AN ARBORIST THIS YEAR.

This year if you need trimming, tree planting, removals or anything else that has to do with tree work, why not call a professional? I can tell you what trees are immune to the diseases actively working in Kiowa right now or let you know if trimming is a bad idea because of contagious diseases in your area. Also, be sure and call me to remove any dead trees on your property. They didn’t kill themselves and they can spread what killed them quickly if not removed properly. I clean my chainsaws between trees, and paint large cuts to minimize exposure to disease. Also, just having me walk your property can help you tremendously. Thank you and I look forward to hearing from you.

The February format will be a 6-5-4-3 scramble. The 6-5-4-3 scramble number indicates drives required by A/B/C/D players. Sign up in the Pro Shop by Feb. 9 and join us for this event.

Due to the cancellation of the January meeting, the four 2006 Hole-in-One winners were given their checks for the prize money and the awards plaques will be presented at the February general meeting.

Don’t forget to send in your MGA 2007 membership dues of $30. Include an additional $15 if you want to be in the Hole-in-One pot.

Jerry Penland

President Emeritus Wayne Shearer called the meeting to order at 8 a.m. All members were present except Jack Theis.

Meeting Notes: The minutes of the December meeting

were approved.Treasurer’s Report;Dale Mock, 2006 Treasurer, submitted

the fi nancial statement for December with a summary report as follows: The beginning balance $31,010.42 monthly receipts were $646.43 and expenses were $2,176.10, leaving the month end cash balance of $29,480.75. This amount includes committed funds for the hole in one pot and driving range totaling $14,361. This results in a net cash position of $15,119.75. The report was approved.

Membership:Bob Hey reported our 2007

membership now stands at 305 with 146 signed up for the hole in one club. Approximately 1,200 invitations were sent out soliciting membership for 2007 at a cost of $612. The board will revisit this later in the year to determine

if the extra funding actually results in additional memberships. A reminder will be put in the CommuniQue and on the web site to send in your 2007 dues.

Public Relations:A thank you note from Pat Greenlee

was received. Projects:The MGA has committed $9,951 to

the driving range project for completion of mats on the tee boxes. The board voted to increase this commitment to $12,940 to fund the completion of these planned efforts as well as expansion / gravel of the parking areas. After discussion, the board voted to commit $10,000 for the sprinkler system on the left side of number 6 fairway. This level of funding was estimated by David Long and includes materials only, labor to be provided by the MGA.

Tournaments:Our Jan. 12, Saturday play format will

of our Saturday play day events. The tournament committee will provide a description to the general membership. RJ will communicate with the POA to include tournament and playday information on the web site and the message boards.

Old Business:David Long reminded us that the

course is cart path only for January and February. David also asked that we remind all residents to refrain from walking on the tees and greens while there is frost, as it will kill the grass.

New Business:Checks, cards, and plaques for the

SECURITY DEPARTMENT

The Christmas and New Year’s holidays are just passed with little to report in the way of problems at the Front Gate or within the community.

One notable exception was the break-in at the Nortex Communications compound off of San Chez Drive on Dec. 27 resulting in the theft of a van. The vehicle was later located in Gainesville and the incident is being investigated by the Cooke County Sheriff’s Department. In what might be a related incident, Golf Course Maintenance personnel reported vandalism to the #10 Green on the same date. During this reporting period, only one other complaint of criminal mischief was received after a house and lot were toilet-papered.

Security patrol assisted stranded motorists on nine occasions and pulled motorists over for various traffi c offenses ten times. Two citations were issued for speeding, one for reckless driving, one for failure to stop for Security and one for operating a golf cart without a permit. Five resident welfare checks were performed, a missing child was searched for and a suspicious person was checked out, as were four suspicious vehicles. Children playing on the #11 Tee Box were removed from the Golf Course, roller skaters were removed from the Tennis Court and an unauthorized guest was removed from Lake Kiowa.

Animal Control Offi cers attempted to locate 21 stray dogs and three stray cats. Response was also indicated to three complaints of barking dogs. Two citations were issued for leash

law violations. Security Guardhouse personnel monitored 17 LKVFD emergencies and patrol offi cers escorted six ambulances to addresses within Lake Kiowa.

Kiowa Homeowners Water Supply Corporation Board NomineesAlbert Ray Arronté

It all started on March 13, 1944 in the small hard rock mining community of Superior, Arizona. That was when I was born. We moved to Phoenix when I was around six because, as my mother put it, she would not have her son grow up and work in that dirty dangerous mine. Consequently, I went through grade school and high school in Phoenix, graduating from Camelback High in 1961. After a pitiful attempt at junior college, I enlisted in the United States Coast Guard in 1962. After four very interesting years I was honorably discharged in 1966 with the rank of E-5 Radioman. I immediately returned to Phoenix Junior College at the age of 22 and married. I graduated from Phoenix Junior College in 1967 with an AA degree in mechanical drafting and a very clear understanding that mechanical drafting was very boring. As a result of that realization I went on to Arizona State University where I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Design Engineering in 1969. Upon graduation, I teamed up with five other engineers, of varying degrees, who had started up a small computer company called Peripherals Incorporated. Here, I was responsible for all mechanical design, circuit board layout and managed the drafting department consisting of two draftsmen. This exciting adventure lasted until 1973 when IBM basically put us out of business. If you can recall 1973 you might remember that engineers were a dime a dozen so I went looking for other employment to support my family of one

wife and two daughters. I ultimately found a very rewarding position with Xerox Corporation repairing high speed duplicators in Phoenix, Arizona. Although I took a considerable reduction in compensation, I felt that there could be a very satisfying career with Xerox. I was right; I progressed from Customer Service Engineer to Field Service Manager to Branch Service Support Manager in Phoenix. In 1976 I was transferred to Los Angeles California as Branch Service Manager and progressed on to Region Service Operation Support Manager. In 1983 the move was to National Headquarters in Rochester, New York as National Service Operations Support Manager. 1985 brought about a move to Dallas, Texas in the position of Region Manager of Customer Service. In 1988 I was promoted to the position of Area Vice President Customer Service Operations Mid-Atlantic Area located in Washington, D.C. I was in this assignment for only six months when the same position opened up for the Southern Area in Dallas, Texas where my daughters were. After considerable string pulling and begging I was allowed to assume the position of Vice President Customer Service Operations Southern Area. In this assignment, I was responsible for eleven Service Districts ranging from Colorado to Tennessee and Iowa to Texas with 2,000 Xerox employees, an expense budget of $225M and a revenue plan of $925M of which $605M was directly attributable to Service. While in this

Rich GardnerDallas was my birthplace and I was

raised in the panhandle town of Pampa. After graduating from Pampa High, I attended Texas Tech in Lubbock for two years before returning to Pampa and marrying Phyllis. I started my business career in Pampa, working in the auto and boating industry. We had our daughter, Tonia, while living in Pampa.

Career change; left Pampa for Wichita, Kansas, to enter the store management training program for Western Auto. I later managed Western Auto stores in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, Denver, Colorado and then back to Wichita where I managed the largest Western Auto store in the nation with over 50 employees. In 1968, I was recruited by Philco Ford and we returned to Texas living in the Dallas area. I started with Philco Ford as a territory manager and became the key account manager for the State of Texas. In 1972, Ford decided to change the way they were marketing Philco and I was asked to move to Pennsylvania. I decided to leave the big Corp. life and start my own rep organization calling on furniture stores in Texas and Oklahoma. In 1986, I bought the distributor rights for Guardian Products for North Texas and Oklahoma. I opened an office and warehouse in Lewisville, Texas. My company now covers all of Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas, selling chemical products and warranted programs for home and office furniture items. One of my best fortunes in business was going through both Western Auto and Ford’s management training programs.

Phyllis and I bought our Lake Kiowa lot in 1993, after many years of searching for our right home. We moved into our new home in December of 1994. What a great decision to move to Lake Kiowa. We truly love this community. I recently completed an office building with motor coach spaces one half mile west of the gate on FM 902. We plan on Lake Kiowa being our home forever.

I would consider it an honor to be able to serve the community as a member of the Kiowa Homeowners Water Supply Corporation.

position I was on the boards of Junior Achievement, Interlink, University of Texas North Dallas, SMU Cox School of Business and was active with the North Texas Commission as a mentor to minority owned small businesses. Also during my tenure with Xerox, I co-founded the Hispanic Association for Professional Advancement. It was in the reorganization of 1996 when I accepted the assignment of National Account Service Manager in Dallas, Texas rather than move to Chicago as a Vice President. Then the wonderful year of 1999 came around when Xerox looked to again reorganize and rid itself of the older crowd. Yes, I took a package and retired.

My wife Yolanda and I purchased a lot at Lake Kiowa in 1995 for weekend golfing and ultimately purchased a home in 1999. We were weekenders until 2001 when we made the leap and left Colleyville and the big city for Lake Kiowa. During these past five years I obtained my State of Texas Certified Mediator and have been active with The Friends of The Lodge, building booths and decorating the lodge, been on the MGA board as Vice President, President and President Pro-Tem, and on the Rules Enforcement Committee as a member and presently as the Chairperson. I strongly believe that one should continue to learn and give back to the community they are part of and am therefore very interested in serving on the Board of Directors of the Kiowa Homeowners Water Supply Corporation.

Lake Kiowa is a fortunate community to have many fi rst class craft and repair people who do work for our residents. As a whole these are honest hard-working people who paint our homes, wallpaper, do plumbing, electrical work, rock work, yard work, roofi ng and most anything we hire them to do.

However in this group there have been scam artists at work who are only out to take your money, maybe do some poor work and never return to fi nish the job. Please remember the rules at Kiowa say that no one may solicit door to door. This includes repair persons, carpenters, plumbers, painters, roofers, etc. Also remember if someone is working at a house next door or close by and they approach you or you approach them about work, there are some guidelines you should follow. Check their references or wait until they have fi nished the neighbor’s work and have an honest talk with the people where the work was done. Find out if they satisfactorily completed the job. Do not pay before the work is completed. We all are anxious to have jobs fi nished quickly but checking out the references

of the person you are hiring is of supreme importance. Call some of your friends and ask if they know anything about this person.

There are people at Lake Kiowa who have paid large sums of money for work that was never completed or poorly done. Some of these have happened very recently. As much as we would like to believe that all the people who live at Lake Kiowa are honest upstanding citizens, this is not the case in this community or any community. There are many senior citizens in our midst who live alone. Scam artists do not hesitate to prey on these people. If someone comes to your door and solicits work, they should be reported to Security at once. Remember these people know the rules also, so they will probably approach you outside your home or put an ad in the CommuniQue. Just because they have an ad in our paper does not guarantee their work. There is not any way the paper can check out the validity of all the people who advertise. Please do your renovations, but check those references fi rst.

MINUTES OF THE BOARD MEETING

KIOWA HOMEOWNERS WATER SUPPLY CORPORATION

WEDNESDAY DECEMBER 13, 2006

INVOCATION: President Jess Maxwell opened the meeting with a word of prayer.

CALL TO ORDER: The meeting was held at the Kiowa Homeowners Water Supply Corporation Office and was called to order at 9:00 a.m. by President Jess Maxwell.

ESTABLISHMENT OF QUORUM: All members were present.

APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES OF THE NOVEMBER 8, 2006 MEETING: The minutes were approved on a motion by Dean Dorsch and a second by J.A. Samples. All were in favor. .

MANAGER’S REPORT: Ronny reported that the cold snap had caused few breaks. Two taps blew out and one main needed repair. He received several calls from week-enders who were not able to come and turn off their water and requested the water department to do it so their pipes would not freeze. The water department handled these

requests. Ronny also reported that the auditors

have received all our records and have started our audit.

DISCUSSION AND APPROVAL OF FINANCIAL STATEMENTS AND AUTHORIZATION OF PAYMENT OF BILLS: After a discussion of the financial statements, Brent Reed made a motion to accept the financial statements and pay the bills. It was seconded by Dean Dorsch and all were in favor.

COMMITTEE REPORTS:BUILDING: Ronny presented the

board with a building update consisting of work completed, work in process, and work to be completed.
