Horizontal Facade Detail
Retail Unit Scale 1:100
The retail units substitute the old warehouses, the original production heart of the site. The retail units were designed to echo the characteristics of these warehouses. The units are clad in charred Scottish Larch timber, a plentiful resource. The charring results in a longer life through the carbonisation of the surface. The timber window frames are brightly painted to contrasted the dark cladding and add an element of fun along the neighbourhoods retail streetscape. The dark timber and colourful windows create a visual diversity from the existing concrete buildings.

Overview of Specifi c Heat Demand using Isover Multi Comfort House Designer
All new buildings on site are constructed using the Brettstapel Solid Timber Construction System
Why Brettstapel?
Brettstapel is solid timber construction system which uses no glues or nails. It is fabricated from softwood timber posts connected with hardwood dowels. It uses low grade timber, grown in the UK, which is otherwise unsuitable for construction, to form load bearing walls, fl oors and roof panels.
Local Timber - UK softwood timber can be used , adding signifi cant value to UK timber resources.Embodied Carbon - Timber locks in 930 kilograms of carbon dioxide per cubic metre. (2 cars off the road a month) Brettstapel buildings sequesters signifi cantly more carbon than a timber frame one. Indoor Environment - Brettstapel is untreated and does not need nails or glue, meaning it is free from potentially harmful compounds.Thermal Mass - Brettstapel has a specifi c heat capacity of 760kJ(m3.k), fi ve times higher than timber frame and twice that of brick. As such, buildings stay cooler during the day in the summer, and warmer for longer in the winter.Thermal Conductivity - Brettstapel has a thermal conductivity of 0.12W/(m.k), meaning low thermal bridging values and very good U-values.Breathable Construction - the timber used is hygroscopic and moisture transfusive, meaning that excess moisture and humidity in the building can pass through the walls, to the outside. This keeps the humidity of the internal environment comfortable and constant allowing for healthier air quality.Airtight - Brettstapel can achieve less than 1 air change per hour.Acoustic - a 54db reduction.Fire Resistance - Structural Panels have a fi re rating of 90 minutes.
All this combined with the Isover products guarantee a superb standard of comfort for the inhabitants of Trent Quay.

The housing has been based on a form that people relate to and instantly recognise as housing. Each housing unit is comprised of 4 dwellings. This allowed us to have a advantageous A/V ratio, resulting in excellent, minimal space heating demand. The ground fl oor is open plan, benefi cial in reaching passive house standards, as warmth radiating elements used day to day, such as cookers, can passively heat the space, without needing to use an addi-tional alternative direct heating system. The housing does however have direct heating as needed through the use of a district boiler. The housing are also quite malleable, allowing growing families to expand into the 2nd fl oor space if needed. In this event, the balcony space would incorpo-rate a new stair case. This lose in balcony space can be regained in the 2nd fl oor if desired. Brettstapel construction easily allows for this ‘chop & change’ alterations.
