John 8:12
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light
of life.”
He is the light of the world. He came into a world of darkness leaving
behind a heavenly temple of endless light. He is the manifestation of truth,
justice and grace. The darkness He came into had sunk so far into depravity it
was unable to behold and comprehend the significance and power of this light. In
a world of racism, hatred, and greed He shone forth compassion, love, and
holiness. The darkness rejected His light and murdered Him. After conquering
death He promised to return and left the world in darkness again except for a
small band of followers who had seen what the rest of the world did not.
Matthew 5:14-16
“You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it
gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your
Father who is in heaven.”
Now you are the light of the world. Having tasted His goodness, His faithfulness, and His forgiveness, you now possess this light. God now manifests truth, justice and grace through YOU. Now the darkness opposes YOU. Compassion, love, and holiness still shine in this world but it is through YOU because of Him. Through these holidays and on in to 2018 let your light shine before others that we may all give glory to our Fa-ther who is in heaven.

One of the many things I’ve found enjoyable about ministry is going through the books that have
been passed down from my father to me. A man named Robert Schuller has written one of my favorites. His
book is called “The Greatest Possibility Thinker Ever” ($2 on Amazon!). It’s a tiny book. Thirty-two pages
total. It can be read in not much longer than five minutes. And you won’t find much about Jesus in this book
that you didn’t already know. But it will be a good reminder for you of who Jesus is—a man who believes in
the possibilities of God.
Nearly half the book is a reminder of why Jesus should have been an “impossibility thinker.” Jesus
was obnoxious to many of his fellow Jews. He was a nobody to the Romans. He lived in a time of
oppressive taxes amongst cynical people. He was uneducated; his family had no prestige; he had no friends
of power or influence; he lived in poverty and often times in isolation with no one to encourage or comfort
him. The list goes on. Everything about his life suggests that here is a man who should be jaded, cynical,
downcast, negative, bitter—a man who focused on all the reasons why something couldn’t be done or why
someone’s life couldn’t be changed for the better.
And yet his was a message of good news. Jesus’ message was one of possibility. “With men it is
impossible, but not with God; for with God all things are possible.” “All things are possible to him who
believes.” “Father, all things are possible…” Those are just a few of the things Mark records; the other
gospels are full of this same kind of thing. Possibility must have been on Jesus’ lips often if it impressed the
gospel writers enough to record it so frequently all those years later. Everything that man views as a
problem Jesus sees as a possibility. Sin is an opportunity for forgiveness, sorrow is an opportunity for
compassion, discord is an opportunity for love, dissention is an opportunity for unity.
How is it that Jesus could think this way, to the point that his actions matched his thoughts? Because
he knew who he was. Because he knew from where he was sent and he knows the One who sent him.
The new year will provide us with many opportunities at Parkview to be possibility thinkers—to
look to the future and consider what God can do through us and in us. The new year will provide us with
many opportunities in our homes, neighborhoods, workplaces, and schools to be possibility thinkers. To
look beyond the brokenness of people and see their possibility in Christ, like Jesus did with Peter or Paul.
Of course, the new year will provide us with many opportunities to be impossibility thinkers as well—to
focus on why things can’t change or why this or that can’t be done.
So how will we be like our Lord and be possibility thinkers? We will be like our Lord if we will be like our Lord, knowing who Jesus really is, knowing from where Jesus was sent, and knowing the power of possibility held by the One who sent him.
