Continue celebrating on Friday December 14th with the HBCOA Annual Holiday Party and Membership Luncheon. The festivities will begin at 10:30a.m. with live music in the Parkview Room; come a little early and enjoy the coffee and cookie bar in the lounge. During lunch there will be fun raffle prizes as well as an opportunity to hear all about new and exciting upcoming events for the HBCOA in 2019. Make sure to sign-up in advance in the lunch room. Sign-ups will begin on November 26th during lunch hours. It is free to attend but does require a prior reservation. Space is first come first served for the event. Make sure to stop on by the senior center this December and help to celebrate the holiday season with the HBCOA and friends alike. There are plenty of events and activities available all month long or just come and enjoy the décor and sit and visit fireside while you take in the centers ambiance. Welcome the holiday season with two exciting events at the Senior Center in Central Park! You will not want to miss out on the fun and holiday cheer; so get ready for good times and come on out and enjoy the festivities sponsored by the HBCOA. Begin the month with the joyous return of the winter gala dance “Seashells and Jingle Bells” on Saturday December 8th from 6p.m. to 10p.m.. It promises to be the hit event of the holiday season. The night will begin with a cocktail hour in the lounge for you to savor delicious appetizers, beverages, and specialty coffee drinks while you mingle with friends and enjoy the holiday ambiance. Following the cocktail hour there will be a wonderful buffet dinner with a scrumptious duet plate selection. The entertainment for the evening will be the hit group the Smoking Cobras, who will help get the holidays kicked off with some rocking good tunes and the holiday favorites of coarse. Commemorate the night at the photo booth with some fun snapshots as well as raffle prizes and a collectable holiday ornament! Tickets are available now at the senior center front desk, $35 for HBCOA members and $40 for non-members. Bring a group and reserve a table or come as a single and be ready to mingle!

As we enjoy the holidays, HBCOA looks back on another successful year filled with accomplishments which were only possible due to our generous HBCOA members and donors, wonderful volunteers, and dedicated Senior Services staff. In 1843 celebrated British novelist, Charles Dickens (Dan Stevens), is at

a low point in his career with three flops behind him and his family expenses piling up at home. Determined to recover, Dickens decides to write a Christmas Story and self

publish it in less than two months. As Dickens labors writing on such short notice, his estranged father and mother come to bunk with him. Still haunted by painful memories of his father ruining his childhood by his financial irresponsibility, Dickens develops a writers block which seems to have no solution. As such, Dickens must face his personal demons epitomized through his characters, especially in his imagined conversations with Ebenezer Scrooge. Now with a looming deadline, Dickens struggles for inspiration against his frustrations and his characters opinions in a literary challenge creating a classic tale that would define the essential soul of modern Christmas. 104 minutes. Rated PG for thematic elements and some mild language. Edmund Gwenn plays Kris Kringle, a bearded old gent who is a living image of Santa Clause. Serving as a last minute replacement for the drunken Santa who was to have led Macys Thanksgiving Parade and then as the in store Santa. Supervisor Doris Walker (Maureen O’Hara) begins having second thoughts quickly when she realizes Kris believes he is the real Santa. Kris agrees to take a room with lawyer Fred Gailey (John Payne) during the holiday season. It happens that Gailey is sweet on Walker and Kris secretly hopes he can bring the two together. He also hopes to win over Susan (Natalie Wood), Walkers daughter, who in her few years on earth has already lost her Christmas spirit. Complications ensue when Mr. Sawyer (Porter Hall), Macy’s nasty in house psychologist arranges to have Kris locked up at Bellevue as a lunatic. Gailey represents Kris at his sanity hearing, rocking the NY court by endeavoring to prove that Kris is indeed Santa Clause. Suffice to say that there is a joyous ending for Mr. Gailey and Mrs. Walker as well as a faith affirming denouncement for little Miss Susan Walker. 96 minutes. Not Rated.

Get Your Kicks on Route 66 W/ Cracker Barrel Lunch Saturday, January 26, 2019 Spend a day on the “Mother Road” as you enjoy the historical buildings and mom and pop shops that make this road the “Main St. of America”. In historic Old Town Victorville enjoy a docent guided tour of the CA Route 66 Museum, which is devoted to the westernmost portion of the highway with signs and various memorabilia. In San Bernardino you will visit the original site of McDonalds, which opened in 1948. Now a Juan Pollo restaurant that the owner has dedicated a portion of the building to a McDonalds museum with a collection of pre Ray Croc McDonalds items. December Greetings! What a quick year 2018 was! The Senior Center in Central Park has welcomed thousands of visitors this past year and it is not over yet. Coming up is the exciting Seashells and Jingle Bells Holiday Dance on December 8, featur ing the Smokin Cobras, who were a hit at this year’s summer concert. Please get you tickets early, as it will sell out soon. We were happy to welcome Carlina Thomas to the staff this fall as our Volunteer Coordinator. Carlina wasted no time recruiting volunteers and organizing the office. She and Kathy Pace are busy filling everyone’s volunteer needs and keeping things running smoothly. A special thanks to all of our volunteers who work in every corner of this busy center: the Wellness Pavilion, Travel & Resource, lunch, HDM, transportation programs, and our wonderful concierge/front desk/docent volunteers who welcome every one! As the end of the year approaches, I have to thank the wonderful staff of the Senior Center in Central Park. The detail and care that everyone puts into their work helps to make this center one of the busiest and most successful in the state. Are You Cooking With the Right Oil? The fat in nearly all foods is a mixture of fatty acids; saturated, monounsaturated and polyunsaturated. It’s best to choose fats that are unsaturated because these types of fats are considered a better nutrition choice because of the positive effects that they have on cardiovascular health. Because each type of oil has a different smoke point, certain oils are better for different types of cooking. The higher the cooking temperature, the higher you want the oil’s smoke point to be to prevent it from burning. 1. Extra Virgin Olive Oil: This oil has a very high

monounsaturated fat content and is high in phytonutrients. It is a staple of the Mediterranean Diet, which has been associated to improved health and a reduced disease risk. It has a LOW SMOKE POINT, so is best used in salad dressings, dips, or in lower baking.

2. Olive Oil: Like extra virgin OO, is very high in healthy fats. However, this oil has a MEDIUM SMOKE POINT and can be used in low-medium temperature cooking such as sautéing and stir-frying.

3. Coconut Oil: This oil is high in saturated fats and has a sweet coconut flavor. It has a MEDIUM SMOKE POINT. It is great as a butter substitute and can also be used for sautéing and stir-frying. For those trying to gain weight, try using this oil in smoothies and toast.

4. Canola Oil: This oil is high in both mono and polyunsaturated fats, much of which are the highly sought omega-3s. It has a MEDIUM SMOKE POINT and works well for medium temperature cooking like sautéing.

5. Avocado Oil: This oil is high in monounsaturated fats and has a VERY HIGH SMOKE POINT. It’s versatile and can be used in high heat cooking and as a salad topping.

Holiday thanks to the DreamCatchers Auxiliary of the Assistance League! Since 2005 DreamCatchers have helped sponsor countless services to the Senior Center’s Care Management

program. This December DreamCatchers have once again decided to help spread holiday cheer by providing 60 holiday gift bags filled with goodies for delivery to homebound senior clients. These wonderful women raise funds and contribute to the community through the totally volunteer-run Assistance League Thrift Store located at 8071 Slater Ave., east of Beach Blvd. Check it out and support their great causes!

Surf City Seniors on the Go!

Transportation Services

(714) 374-1742 Senior Services provides transportation each weekday, from 8:30a.m. to 4:30p.m. to Huntington Beach residents 60+ for all their transportation needs within Huntington Beach and to the Social Security office in Fountain Valley. The Surf City Seniors on the Go! shuttle brings older adults to the Senior Center for the SeniorServ lunch program, classes, and activities. Medical transportation is also available to Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, Fountain Valley Regional Hospital, and to Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center. Vehicles are wheelchair accessible.

A Volunteer Escort is available to provide extra assistance on shopping trips. For more information ask the dispatchers.

Transportation appointments fill quickly. Please give as much notice as possible. Five day’s notice is required to guarantee a ride. Same day service is offered on a space available basis. 24 hour notice is requested for cancellations.

Call between the hours of 9:00a.m. and 3:00p.m. to schedule your ride. New clients are registered by phone. Although there is no charge to seniors for transportation, donations are appreciated.

The Huntington Beach Fire Department Project SHIP (Senior Home Inspection Program) provides free 10 year battery smoke/carbon Monoxide detectors for all Huntington Beach residents 60 years or older. Fire Department trained volunteers will install them for you free of charge while supplies last. They will also come and check your home for fire hazards and educate you on home safety and how to prepare for an earthquake.
