The types of fish that may be caught in Huron County can be divided into three distinct groups based on the type of fishery that predominates: the cool and cold water fish communities in Lake Huron; cold water fish found in rivers and streams; warm water fish found in rivers, streams, and smaller inland lakes. Lake Huron The Lake Huron fishery consists of cold water species such as the rainbow/brown/lake trout, chinook, and coho salmon, as well as cool water species like yellow perch, smallmouth bass, and walleye. A significant sports fishery exists at the mouths of the Bayfield, Maitland, and Nine Mile Rivers for migratory spawning species during mid March to the end of May for rainbow trout and during September and October for chinook, coho salmon and rainbow trout. These cold water species are found approximately six to ten miles offshore during the summer months. Yellow perch, smallmouth bass, and sunfish are taken from late spring to early fall along the entire Lake Huron shoreline. Most of the fishing for these particular species takes place on piers and at river mouths. Cold Water Rivers Cold water river and stream fish consist of brook and brown trout, as well as the migratory rainbow trout and salmon. All the cold water species prefer water with mid summer temperatures less than 20°C (68°F). These spring fed streams are concentrated in a belt from Bayfield through to Wingham. The Cold Water Fishing Chart can be used to determine which fish species are commonly found in the rivers, and creeks shown on the reverse map. Warm Water Rivers / Lakes The warm water river and lake fish consist of species such as the smallmouth bass, panfish (includes rock bass, bluegill, and pumpkinseed), northern pike, and yellow perch. These fish are generally found in inland lakes and rivers having summer temperatures in excess of 20°C (68°F). Lakelet Lake, Lake Wawanosh, and the Morrison Dam represent the most significant areas available for warm water lake fishing. The main river sections of the Maitland and Bayfield Rivers also provide excellent areas to fish for smallmouth bass. The Warm Water Fishing Chart can be used to determine which fish species are commonly found in the various lakes, rivers, and creeks shown on the reverse map. Ontario Family Fishing Week (1st or 2nd Week in July and one weekend in February). Residents will be allowed to fish without a licence. Paddling in Huron County Paddling in Huron County Suggested Trips Paddle Huron Huron County offers a variety of paddling opportunities ranging from flat water to mild white water (during flood conditions). There are 6 dams located in Huron County which provide all summer flat water paddling ranging from 1.5hrs to 3hrs round trip and none require a shuttle. The Maitland River is Huron’s crown jewel, offering a 2 - 3 day leisurely trip from Wingham to Goderich with campgrounds located along the way. Early spring or after a large rainfall is the best time for this trip as the river is very wide and water levels fluctuate quickly. Hullett Marsh is also located in Huron County and provides spring and fall paddling in the Marsh. An abundance of wildlife and migrating birds can be viewed while in the Marsh. Paddling in Huron offers commanding views specific to where you are and the time of year. Spring offers spring run off, trees and wildlife waking up, new growth to see and the remainders of winter left in the hills and valleys. Summer shows off the variety of trees and shrubs, young ducks and geese learning to swim, and the summer breezes (and bugs) that get you away from the office to enjoy nature. Fall is an exciting time to paddle as the fall migration of ducks and geese is at its peak, the colours of the trees change daily and the summer heat and bugs have dissipated, making for a more enjoyable paddle. Paddling doesn’t have to be a week long trip in the wild; it can be an hour trip in your own ‘back yard’. Check out the details of this map to find out what Huron County has to offer! GOT AN HOUR? Try here... Access #3 Wroxeter Dam Area – From the dock on the north side of the bridge, head east through the meandering river towards Gorrie. This is an easy paddle for after supper and doesn’t require a shuttle. Watch out for dead heads. Access #23 Hullett Marsh – Check your Hullett guide book for the access points surrounding the marsh for easy, wildlife filled paddling. No shuttle required. Remember access is not allowed from May 15th to Aug 1st to minimize disturbances to nesting waterfowl. GOT TWO HOURS? Try here... Access #22 Brussels Conservation Area – Starting from the Old Mill Pond Dam, paddle south going by a few backyards into the wilderness. You will see a variety of birds and hardwood bush along this stretch. You can paddle past the Cranbrook Line Bridge before running out of water. This can be a 6 mile round trip or the trip can be made shorter by shuttling from the bridge to Brussels. Access #9 Auburn Bridge to Ball’s Bridge access #10 – Starting from under the County Road Bridge, paddle down river through the majestic banks of the Maitland River to a feel of being in the middle of nowhere. This trip depends on water levels and vehicles must be shuttled. Beware of the odd attacking goose! GOT A WEEKEND? Try here... Access #5 Wingham County Road 86 bridge to Goderich access #17 – This could be up to a 3 day paddle depending on water levels and paddler experience (or head winds). Starting from Wingham, paddle down river watching for swifts and dead heads. Camping is available at 4 locations along the river (be sure to book your site before you leave). Faster water is located between access #14 and #17 and portages may be required. Check local water levels before heading out and scout all rapids before running. Paddling in Huron County Paddling in Huron CountySuggested TripsPaddle Huron

Huron County offers a variety of paddling opportunities ranging from flat water to mild white water (during flood conditions).

GOT AN HOUR?Try here...

GOT TWO HOURS?Try here...

GOT A WEEKEND?Try here...

HAVE A SAFE AND ENJOYABLE PADDLING EXPERIENCE!
