Pulsar, the high pulse voltage
E.S.E. lightning conductor
CNRS-HELITA
PATENT
Hélita founded in 1932, is a world leader in direct lightning
protection. Over 200 000 references testify to Hélita’s
presence throughout the world. In collaboration with CNRS
(French National Scientific Research Organization), ANVAR
(French National Agency for the Valorization of Research),
top technical schools and Universities, the company prepares
tomorrow’s lightning protection and is the forerunner in its
sector. These extensive research programs have led Hélita to
file several patents worldwide.
ABOUT HÉLITA
Thanks to its initiation advance, the Pulsar emits a high voltage signal at clearly determined and controlled frequency and amplitude.
Its effectiveness is guaranteed by the rapid formationand propagation of the upward leader, while reducingthe development of space charges around the point.
AN EFFICIENT INITIATION ADVANCE
The Pulsar is also self-contained. It draws its energyfrom the ambient electric field existing at the time of thestorm (10 to 20 kV/m). The initiation advance starts up assoon as the ambient field exceeds a peak value whichcorresponds to the minimum lightning strike risk.
ENERGY AUTONOMY
For over 18 years Hélita has run more than 40 000strikes in various H.V laboratories to validate the efficiency of its Pulsar lightning conductors. Hélita is theonly ESE manufacturer in the world having performed somany tests to measure the values of time gain.
Pulsar range performances (∆T values) are certified bythe main Official Governmental Third Party Organisation.

h
The radius of protection Rp of a Pulsar is given
by French standard NF C 17-102 of july 1995.
It depends on the initiation advance ∆T of
the Pulsar being measured in high voltage
laboratory, on the levels of protection I, II
or III calculated according to the lightning risk
assessment guide (Appendix B of NF C 17-102),
and to the height h of the Pulsar tip over the
area to be protected (minimum height h=2m).
Rp : radius of protection in a horizontal plane located ata vertical distance h from the Pulsar tip
h : height of the Pulsar tip above the element(s) to beprotected
D : 20m for level of protection I45m for level of protection II60m for level of protection III
∆L = 106 .∆T (Initiation advance)
Rp = h (2D-h) + ∆L (2D + ∆L)
