Dear Brothers and Sisters—
"As we express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter
words, but to live by them." (John Fitzgerald Kennedy)
It’s hard to believe that I have been blessed to serve as your interim pastor for the past 18 months.
I am grateful to so many of you for the unconditional love and grace you have extended to me
during this difficult season of transition. Thank you. I also appreciate your deep level of commitment to prayer and discipleship as well as being willing to step out of your comfort zone
to try ‘new things’ as the Spirit leads. There has been fruit from your faithful actions as we’ve
experienced a slight surge in Sunday School attendance along with a number of individuals indicating interest in becoming members (mission partners) of FELCGM! I believe there are
others who have grown in their relationship with Jesus Christ. This is such good news.
I know there are some who are having a more difficult time with this change of the pastorate and
not as hopeful for our future. To those struggling, I’d like share that I am praying for you
regularly and trusting that you are not looking to me for your future but to Him, Jesus Christ. It is only by His grace and love that we are saved. It is only through Him, and leaning on His strength
and wisdom, that we are blessed to even exist as a church. I remain continually astonished that the
Lord dares to use ‘poor <limited> creatures’ like me—and ‘us’ together—for and to His glory. It
is humbling, isn’t it? But so hopeful!
As you well know, Thanksgiving Day is just a few weeks away. I am mindful of the depth of
gratitude I hold in my heart for you, especially after delivering a carload and half of goods and
supplies for Hurricane Disaster Relief on your behalf. Over the course of the past month, our
church stepped up in a huge way as we collected blankets, health kits, 5-gal. buckets filled with emergency items, etc. to help many that have been devastated by Hurricanes Florence and
Michael. THANK YOU!!! I was so very proud to deliver this to Lebanon, PA, where our district
churches gathered to load up a big 28’ trailer. This trailer will be headed to a distribution center in southern Georgia where they will share these goods with hundreds of families throughout Florida
and Georgia.
Dear Friends, you understand JFK’s words regarding living a life of thanksgiving: ”As we
express our gratitude, we must never forget that the highest appreciation is not to utter words, but to live by them.” Truly, you are living up to his challenge. It is such an honor to share such a life
with you ...
In Christ’s love, Pastor Craig

CONTEMPORARY WORSHIP Fourth Sunday of the month during the 11:00 am worship service with Holy Communion.
Prelude (noun)… an action or event serving as an introduction to something more important/ it’s the quiet time before the service begins to prepare our hearts to worship God. (please refrain from applause during service). CARD MINISTRY . . . .is continuing to reach out to our shut-ons and people who are on our
prayer list. If you like to craft with paper we would like you to join us in making homemade greeting cards that will be mailed to them. No special talent will be necessary, just a willingness to help others. There will be no cost, unless you want to make a donation towards the cost of materials and stamps. We will have our crafting session on Tuesday, November 20, 2018 upstairs in the education hall, beginning at
10:00 am. You may come at any time and join the fun, we will try to finish by 12:00 noon. Hope to see you there, Joyce Sweat and Jane Browneller

Prayer Warriors
In November 2010, Pastor Carol Sipes started King’s Kids for children five years of age through sixth grade. The program was intended to augment the faith of the youngsters, while encouraging mission partnership. The children were asked if they would like to sponsor a child from a foreign
country, to which they enthusiastically responded. When the youngsters were shown a page full of children seeking sponsors through Compassion International, they chose Marco Martinez who was then seven years old. We have been faithful in assisting this boy from the Philippines, who is now 14 years of age. In addition to monetary support, we can assist Marco by praying for the youngsters, asking God to help him in his spiritual growth through a local church, persevere in his education, develop life-giving friendships, and receiving a bestowal of a spirit of joy and hope. Marco’s birthday is on March 1. Compassion International suggests, that if you so desire, you can send him a monetary gift of $25. His Contact address is: Marco Martinez – Child Number PH06510043 – Compassion International – PO Box 65000 – Colorado Springs, C. 80962-9942 Donations may be placed in the Mission Can located on the back shelf in the narthex as you enter the church.

Bible Question Corner
1. Ture or false? Proverbs suggest that a generation which despises
its parents will end up practicing oppression. (Prov. 30:21-23). 2. True or false? There are several proverbs directed specifically to
governmental leaders. (Prov. 16:10-15; 25:5-7). 3. Question: Which chapter of Proverbs exalts a woman as a good
person, wife, mother, and neighbor? (Prov. 31).
November
November comes, And November goes
With the last red berries
And the first white snows,
With night coming
early And dawn coming
late, And ice in the bucket And frost on the gate.
The fires burn
And the kettles sing, And earth sinks to rest
Until next sprin. -Elizabeth Coatsworth
Stewardship:
Octobers Mission appeal for “Health Kits” ended October 31, 2018.
This month of November is filled with activity.
November 18th is “harvest of Thanks” service. The women of First Lutheran, along with Deacon Jim Westervelt, will be presiding both services. Claudia will be looking for female volunteers to read certain parts of the liturgy during the 8:15 and 11:00 worship services. Female choir volunteers will also be needed. We will be soliciting funds for “Fill the Well” to make it possible for Lutheran World Relief to provide clean water for people that have to walk for miles to carry a few jugs of water back to their homes to cook and water their livestock. I have flyers and special envelopes for this project in the back of the church. Please read a flyer to learn how we take for granted this precious commodity. Make checks payable to Women of First Lutheran.
November 1st we will once again be collecting monetary donations for the Bibles for the Military. I also have flyers and special envelopes for this project in the back of the church. For each $5 collected Biblica will purchase a pocket size New Testament camouflaged Bible that will be given to Military Chaplains to distribute to the soldiers and sometimes their families. This fund raiser will end December 10th. Please make checks payable to Women of First Lutheran.

FLY LOCK – IN – November 16-17, 2018 Come for the dinner and say overnight for the fun. We will have a breakfast in the morning and then pack up food to give to those in need for Thanksgiving. All youth grades 4-12 are invited to come. Activities planned throughout the night. Sign-up sheet will be on the FLY bulletin board.
FOOD BASKETS . . it’s that time of year again. We will be collecting food to distribute to those in need of help. This will begin Sunday October 14, 2018 and continue to Sunday, December 9, 2018. We will be assembling Thanksgiving Baskets on Saturday, November 16, 2018 and Christmas Baskets on December 15, 2018. FLY activities are planned around these dates.
LIBRARY NEWS Stop in the Church Library for a good book. Last month we mentioned there is a selection of several versions of the Bible. Next to that is the reference section. These can enhance your knowledge as you study God’s word. If you need assistance ask Mazie, JoAnn or Thelma. There is a chart on the shelf explaining check out and return procedures. Please join the library Open House December 2, 2018 beginning at 8:00 am. Stop in and enter our “Guess Who Contest!” Evangelism November 2018 – 2Chronicles 7:14 If my people who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and will heal their land. In November, we will be voting and it is important for all “Evangelicals” to go to the polls and vote. We cannot let those who live contrary to God’s word make decisions for us. We must stand up for the Word of God. We need godly men and women in our government. There are those in Washington who are Christians and they do pray and have Bible study twice a week. We need to be supportive. Ask God to give you His wisdom. Please Vote! Submitted by: Jane Browneller –Evangelism Elder

Inquiring Minds Want to Know?
Who actually signed our Church Charter on February 2, 1947 thus forming The First Evangelical
Lutheran Church of Gray Manor? Each time I learned of an older members passing I would hear conversations that “she/he was the last Charter Member of our church” and I started asking myself this question. Going through the original Church Register, looking at the original picture of the persons signing the Charter, going through donated old history folders or researching various milestone bulletins or pamphlets depicting our Church history, I discovered two different counts of Charter Members, 3- and 48. I could not locate the original charter in any of the office files and I am told that it is not in either safe. Could it have been placed in the corner Stone time capsule when it was laid on May 28, 1950? Unfortunately, when the time capsule was removed and opened (I’m guessing around 2000 or 2001), it was discovered that all the documentation had disincarnated, I could not locate the list of items placed in the time capsule and it is possible that the signed Charter and other important historical documents may have been destroyed. In Paul McKinney’s account of our Church’s history in 1970, he wrote, “As close as we can calculate, there are only 8 active Charter Members lift”/ (marked by * below) Below is a list of persons that I found to have actually signed the Charter: (Each Charter Member would have received a certificate signed by Otto E. Senft – Pastor, dated February 2, 1947.)
1. Mr Alexander Gibson 16. Mrs Elizabeth DeStefano* 2. Mrs Dorothy Gibson 17. Mr Sherman John Twigg* 3. Mrs Celia Bauer 18. Mrs Lillian Twigg* 4. Mr. Richard Shaffer 19. Mr Charles Robert Snell 5. Mrs Opal Shaffer 20. Mrs Willa Snell 6. Mr Harold Locke 21. Annabelle Colditz (Zero)* 7. Mrs Mildred Locke * 22. Irene Colditz 8. Mrs Jeanette McKinney* 23. Mr Richard Vetter 9. Mrs Clyde Tressler 24. Mrs Ruth Vetter 10. Mrs Elsie Rollins 25. Mr John Rombach 11. Mr Harold MacKinnon 26. Mrs Rombach 12. Mrs Jessie MacKinnon* 27. Mr Charles Holcomb 13. Mr Frederick Landgraph 28 Mrs Holcomb 14. Mrs Blanch Landgraph 29. Libby DeStefano 15. Mr Leo DeStefano 30.Daphne Morris
If, in fact, there were 48 persons, who were those remaining 18 persons? During my quest to find the list of Charter members, I discovered interesting accounts of our Church’s history since 1942. In addition to numerous Pastors, our Church has undergone many renovations and additions and our Church constitution has been rewritten and revised several times. When I think of all the sorting, filing, storing, moving and cleaning that has taken place over the years, I can’t help but feel that these documents are stored in a safe location. My prayer is that one of you may know of other Charter Members or may have seen these documents at some point or may know of someone who could point us in the right direction. If you have any information, I am asking that you, please contact either Bonnie VanMeter or myself. I would like to extend a special Thank You to Bonnie VanMeter, Lou and Eva Malozi, and my husband Harvey, who assisted in my research. Thank You and God bless.
