How is wind measured?Wind is measured with an anemometer. It has three

cups which catch the wind and causes the anemometer to rotate. Anemometers should be located around 30 feet above the ground. The highest wind speed is 231

MPH! This was measured at the summit of Mt. Washington in New Hampshire. The windiest month in the Tennessee Valley is March. August has the calmest

winds. Many times, a downtown area can be just as windy as on a mountaintop in the Smokey’s.

What is evaporation ?

Water is moved from place to place. The water changes from a liquid to a gas. 80% of all evaporation is from the ocean with the remaining 20% coming from inland

Clouds are water. Water as gas is called water vapor. Clouds form when vapor turns back into liquid water droplets. The droplets of water in a

cloud are so small that it takes about one million of them to form a single raindrop.

What are stratus clouds?

Stratus clouds are long and almost cover the whole sky. If you see them in broken or puffy layers, they are stratocumulus clouds. If you see them in thin high layers that turn the sky solid white, they’re cirrostratus clouds. When stratus clouds are very thick, they become dark nimbostratus clouds, which can produce rain, drizzle or snow. Stratus clouds are much wider than they are tall.

What are cumulus clouds?

Cumulus clouds are big puffy clouds that can be any shape. They also stay low. When cumulus clouds are around they

usually bring good weather. If they move into the middle or higher levels, then they

are called cumulonimbus clouds. A cumulonimbus cloud can bring very bad

weather. They can even bring a tornado!!!!!!!!!!

What are cirrus clouds ?Cirrus clouds are wispy. Cirrus clouds form above 20,000 feet in the air. Cirrus clouds are a sign of warm air. Cirrus clouds sometimes bring rain or snow.

There can be as much as 150 – thousand tons of water inside a cumulonimbus

cloud. That would fill a pond a mile long, 300 feet wide and five feet deep.

What is fog?

Fog is a cloud at ground level. It can form on clear nights when there is a lot of moisture in the air.

Sometimes winds blow warm moist air over a cold surface such as water or ice, which causes the

moisture to condense into fog.

Is lightning dangerous?

Lightning can strike people and buildings and is very dangerous.

Even small thunderstorms are dangerous. Every thunderstorm can

have lightning which kills more people each year than tornadoes.

Have an emergency plan before a storm hits. Don’t go near a wall or a window. Tornadoes can go

more than 200 mph. The United States has more tornadoes than anywhere else in the world. If you hear a tornado, go underground, into a closet or a

there is a tornado, listen to your teacher even though you might know what to do. If you are in a mobile home get out. A tornado can easily crush a mobile home. When you are out,

get in a ditch with a battery radio to see when you can get up. If you’re in a house go to a safe cellar. Get on

your knees with your hands on your head and

Tornadoes are nature’s most violent storms. A tornado is a type of windstorm. In fact, it’s the windiest sort of windstorm there is. The winds of a tornado can smash windows and lift people and cars into the air. The only safe place is underground.

A hurricane is a very bad storm. They form over the Southern Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, Gulf of Mexico, and the Eastern Pacific Ocean. They rotate counter- clockwise. They can do very bad damage.
