Hailing the 64th Anniversary ArmedForces Day a ceremony to open Ngawun Bridge(Myogwin) in Ingapu Township, HinthadaDistrict, Ayeyawady Division, was held on 21March, and member of the State Peace andDevelopment Council General Thura Shwe Mannof the Ministry of Defence attended the ceremonyand unveiled the stone inscription of the bridge.

Ayeyawady of today is totally differentfrom that of the past. In the past, its transport hadto rely solely on waterways. Since 1989 after thebirth of the Tatmadaw government, the divisionhas seen altogether 45 large and small bridges inits transport sector.

With the emergence of a large number ofroads and bridges, unprecedented progress hasbeen made in the division. Meanwhile, with bettertransport in the region, economic, trade and socialsectors of the division are ongoing and improving.

Such development can be largelyattributed to goodwill, far-sightedness and hardwork of the government as well as cooperation,integrity and efforts of local people in AyeyawadyDivision.

It is safe to say that the combined effortsof the State, the people and the Tatmadaw basedon mutual understanding are witness to thesuccess of the division.

Making the most of the new bridge,vehicles with 60 tons of load can now easily run toand from Hinthada, Ingapu, Myanaung, Kyanginand Laymyethna townships.

KABUL, 22 March—Two mines planted by mili-tants struck two vehicles in two districts of Kandaharthe former stronghold of Taleban Saturday leavingthree people dead and three others injured, all of themcivilians, provincial administration spokesmanZalmai Ayubi said.

“The first incident took place in Arghandab dis-trict as the mine planed by rebels hit a van as a resulta non-combatant was killed, while the second attackoccurred against military vehicle in Maiwand dis-trict killing two civilians and wounding three oth-ers,” Ayubi told Xinhua.

Turkish FM expects reductionof US troops in Iraq

ISTANBUL, 22 March—Turkey’s Foreign MinisterAli Babacan on Saturday expressed his expectationthat the number of US troops in Iraq would be reducedto the minimum level.

In an interview with Turkish private ATV channel,Babacan said that the US troops in Iraq might be re-duced to the minimum level, adding that he was doubt-ful that the US military presence in that country wouldbe zeroed till the end of 2011.

Int’l troops raid kills fivein Afghanistan

KABUL, 22 March—International troops stationedin Kunduz Province early Sunday morning conducteda raid on the house of Mayor Sofi Abdul Manan, kill-ing five people, said an official.

Juma Khan, district chief of Iman Sahib, in talkwith Xinhua confirmed that the incident occurred at4:30 am local time (0000GMT) when internationaltroops in a surprise operation broke in the Mayor’shouse and killed five people inside.

Suicide car bombing kills, in-jures over 10 in Afghanistan

KABUL, 22 March—A suicide car bombing Sat-urday afternoon targeted a shrine in the suburbanarea of Khost city, capital of Khost Province in east-ern Afghanistan, killing and injuring at least 10people, official and witnesses said.

Gul Dad, a senior official in the provincial crimeand investigation section, told Xinhua that the sui-cide bomber driving a car laden with explosives blewhimself up near a shrine where people were prayingand gathering for Afghan New Year.

He said four people were killed in the blast andfour more were injured, all of them civilians.

However, witnesses at the site predicted highercasualties, saying families of some victims havecome to carried the dead bodies home or to hospital.

WASHINGTON, 22 March — Safetyconcerns resulting from the crash of atruck carrying large amount of hydrof-luoric acid prompted evacuation ofsome 5,000 people in eastern Penn-sylvania early Saturday, authoritiessaid.

The truck was carrying some33,000 pounds (14.9 tons) of acidand the acid spilled after the truckcrashed near Wind Gap, Pennsylva-nia, Jeff Steiert with the local Of-fice of Emergency Management toldreporters.

KHOST (Afghanistan), 22 March—One Afghan construction laborer was killedand 11 others wounded as their bus struck a roadside bomb on Sunday in easternAfghan province of Khost, a provincial public health official said.

“In the wee hours of morning, 12 wounded people including one man in criticalcondition were transferred to the local hospitals,” Amir Badasha told Xinhua.

He said the seriously-wounded man died of wounds later in the hospital.The incident occurred in Musa Khil district and all victims were local Afghans

BRUSSELS, 22 March—The world economy is setto shrink by 1 to 2 percentthis year, World BankPresident Robert Zoellicksaid at a conference hereon Saturday.

Referring to an In-ternational Monetary Fund(IMF) forecast, Zoellicksaid such a worldwideeconomic contraction wasun-precedented since theGreat Depression in the1930’s. “We haven’t seena figure like that globally

NAY PYI TAW, 22 March — Minister for EnergyBrig-Gen Lun Thi yesterday inspected No. 0194 fuelstation of Toungoo under Myanma Petroleum Prod-ucts Enterprise on Yangon-Nay Pyi Taw road sectionof Yangon-Mandalay Expressway, which will beopened on 24 March.

The minister called for selling engine oil withcorrect volume, good relations, fire preventive meas-ure and greening around the station. The station willsell 92 Ron, Octane, petrol and diesel from 6 a.m to 6p.m daily and six vehicles fill the fuel at the same time.

Customers may buy fuel at No. 0194 at Toungooand No. 0199 at Bawnetgyi fuel stations as well as NayPyi Taw and Toungoo fuel stations which were previ-ously opened.— MNA

Moreover, the fac-tory is operating the run-ning-test of 1/60 typecotton thread by purchas-ing quality Ngwechi-6long cotton. In the fu-ture, the factory will pro-duce 1/80 and 1/100 typesof cotton threads.

World countries have

different stances and con-

cepts of their armed forces

according to the histori-

cal backgrounds, cultures,

customs and values of the

Anawrahta had unified the

nation into the First

Myanmar Empire, mem-

bers of the Tatmadaw were

from the three-figure and

four-figure-population

external attacks.

Also in Myinsaing,

Pinya, Innwa and

Konbaung periods, the

people left their harrows

and ploughs and armed

colonialist movements, na-

tional liberation move-

ments and Anti-Fascist Re-

sistance, the entire people

across the nation gave

unanimous encouragement

and support to the service-

men in action. Members of

the Burma Independence

Army, the Burma Defence

Army, the Patriotic Bur-

mese Force and the

Tatmadaw engaged in the

battles, sacrificing life and

in the battle. Many artistes

took a ride in the vehicles

going to Insein frontline

and gave away noodle

packages to show their en-

couragement and support

for the Tatmadaw mem-

bers. Those events were

also documented. If the

people had not expressed

their rousing encourage-

ment to the Tatmadaw

members in action,

Myanmar would have

onstrated superb gallantry

in repulsing the attacks,

and local people and Red

Cross members distrib-

uted meals and picked up

wounded soldiers in the

frontline. In the end, the

insurgents suffered great

loss of lives in the battle.

From that time on, BCP

insurgents have never

been on their feet again,

and that was the start of

their downfall.

Tatmadaw concerned.

Since the time before

the birth of Myanmar, the

people and the Tatmadaw

have been inseparable

from each other. In

Myanmar in the Bagan

period, soldiers were the

people and vice versa. At

the time when King

towns born of the people.

And the garrison towns dis-

charging security duties to

defend the nation from al-

ien invasion were formed

with the soldiers born of

the people. At the time,

each citizen had a sense

of bounden duty to guard

the motherland against

themselves with spears

and swords to defend the

mother country in times

of alien intrusion.

Myanmar people, if the

occasion arose, were

ready to serve as soldiers

with a sense of national

defence duty.

Throughout the anti-

limb, which was evidenced

by the loss of a great number

of casualties of Myanmar

patriotic revolutionaries in

the Anti-Fascist Resistance

that was launched in the

Myanmar month of

Tabaung (March).

In the post-independ-

ence period, the govern-

ment’s machinery was ef-

ment was called Yangon

eight-mile government. At

that time, the Tatmadaw

return home due to the

armed insurgency joined

the army and got involved

slavia.

in the post-independence

when internal armed strug-

the Tatmadaw protected

the people’s life and prop-

erty, sharing joys and sor-

rows of the people. In re-

sponse, the people pro-

vided support and encour-

agement to the Tatmadaw

members. In Si Si Wan

out in 1986, for instance,

the troops of the Burma

Communist Party used all

the weapons they had been

provided in the battle they

had waged to occupy a

township in the border ar-

eas of Shan State (North)

in order to declare the town-

ship as an independent

area. In the beginning of

the battle, they could oc-

cupy some outposts.

carrying out rescue tasks,

distributing relief supplies,

giving health care, and

transporting goods.

Members of local

regiments and units

participated with heart and

soul in removing the

debris, rebuilding

damaged houses,

constructing roads,

digging lakes, giving

health care, and

distributing food hand in

hand with donors,

voluntary organizations

and local people. As a

result, remarkable success

was achieved in the

rehabilitation and

reconstruction tasks.

Nonetheless, those

with negative attitude

towards Myanmar

regarding the natural

disaster speculated that

hundreds of thousands of

more victims would soon

die from hunger; hundreds

of thousands of people

would die of epidemics of

infectious diseases such as

diarrhoea; all the paddy

farms in Ayeyawady

Division, the granary of

Myanmar, had been flooded

by seawater, so there would

be a catastrophic fall in

paddy output and that would

affect the whole nation; the

prices of rice would go up

many times; and the public

outrage would lead to mass

demonstrations. However,

eventually all their

speculations proved wrong.

The achievement of

averting such miserable

consequences was large due

to the harmonious hard work

of the government, the

people and the Tatmadaw.

However much

unscrupulous persons are

making negative comments

and attempting to sow

discord and hatred among

national brethren, they can

never eradicate the

evidences of the whole

history of the nation. The

evidences are:

(1) Tatmadaw members

are born of the people,

so the people have a

sense of oneness with

Tatmadaw members,

(2) Tatmadaw members

maintain a fine tradition

of safeguarding the

lives, property and

interests of the people

at risk to life in times of

emergencies,

(3) If the people and the

Tatmadaw remain

harmonious, they can

surmount any types of

difficulty. The nation

has seen many events

throughout the history

of the nation in which

the people and the

Tatmadaw have

managed to overcome

adversities.

Overall, in the course

of the Myanmar history,

the people and the

Tatmadaw have remained

inseparable from each

other in defending the

motherland from threats.

There is no need to worry

about natural and man-

made disasters so long as

the people and the

Tatmadaw maintain the

consolidated unity

between them.

Not surprisingly, the

elements at home and

abroad who are allergic to

national reconsolidation

and development of

Myanmar are resorting to

all possible ways to

undermine the unity of

Tatmadaw members and

drive a wedge between

the people and the

Tatmadaw.

What is the most

Anniversary Armed ForcesDay. Better transport playsa vital role in government’sefforts for harmoniousprogress of the wholeUnion.

Head of State SeniorGeneral Than Shwe in hisguidance said that bettertransport contributes to pub-lic social lives and also servesas the foundation of unity. Inaccord with the guidance, thegovernment has madesystematic plans to link allthe regions including borderareas divided bygeographical conditionsusing a large amount of fundsfrom its budget. The railroadhas emerged due tocontinuous efforts based onpublic participation,innovations of servicepersonnel and thegovernment’s goodwill touplift economy and sociallives of the people and ensurea safe and secure transport.

The 35-mile longOkshitpin-Kamma railroadis a section of 320-mile longKyangin-Pakokku railroad.The 40-mile long Kyangin-Okshitpin section was com-missioned into service on 1March 2008. Soon, trainswill be able to run along the

222-mile long railroadlinking Pathein and Kammavia Kyangin. The Head ofState has already givenguidance to build a networkof railroads for socio-economic progress of allstates and divisions.

The new projects are320-mile long Kyangin-Pakokku railroad, 95-milelong Katha-Bhamo rail-road, 95-mile longP y a w b w e - N a t m a u k -Magway railroad, 132-milelong Dawei-Myeik rail-road, 198-mile longNamhsam-Kengtung rail-road, and 257-mile longS i t t w a y - A n - M i n b urailroad. Soon, the nationalrailway network willemerge.

Thanks to the endeav-ours of the Rail Transpor-tation Ministry, there arenow railroads from

Myitkyina in the north toDawei in the south and fromNamhsam in the east toKalay in the west. In addi-tion Loikaw in the south-east is also reachable bytrain. Another project isP y a w b w e - N a t m a u k -Magway railroad. Andwhen the said railroadtouches Kyangin-Pakokkurailroad on the west bankof Ayeyawady River, a rail-way connecting east andwest banks of theAyeyawady and up to NayPyi Taw in the centralMyanmar will emerge.Railroads have been builtin Kayah State, TaninthayiDivision and upperMagway Division whichhad no railways in the past.New railroads have alreadybeen built in Shan State andSagaing Division. Peopleall along the railroads will

be able to enjoy a lot ofbenefits from them.

It is safe to say that thetransport sector has under-gone a great change to keeppace with changes and de-velopment of new technol-

ogy. However, rail trans-portation is still in exist-ence as a service on whichmuch have to rely. Suchbeing the case, the govern-ment is giving priority tosecure and smooth rail

transportation that stillplays an important role inpassenger and commoditytransport.

To bring about betterrail transportation, renova-tion of old railroads, build-ing of new railroads, up-grading a single railroadinto dual ones, construc-tion of new railway stationsand upgrading of major rail-way stations in cities intothe ones of internationallevel were carried out. As aresult, before 1988, therewere 1976 miles ofrailroads, 2793 miles of rail-ways and 487 railway sta-tions. And at present, thereare 3238 miles of railroads,4326 miles of railways and821 railway stations withan increase of 1262 milesof railroads, 1533 miles ofrailways and 334 railwaystations.

In the time of theTatmadaw government,progress has been made inroad transport sector in ad-dition to rail transportation

sector with the emergenceof a large number of vil-lage-to-village roads, town-to-town roads and district-to-district roads as well asroads that link one regionand another and those link-

ing states and divisions andUnion Highways. Mean-while, new roads in borderareas were constructed. Asa result, there were over20,000 miles of tarredroads, gravel roads andearth roads in 1988, andthere are now over 70,000miles of those transport fa-cilities.

In the meantime, em-phasis was placed on build-ing of bridges large andsmall in different regions.Therefore, there emerged221 bridges with a lengthof over 180 feet including17 major river crossingbridges.

In the aviation sector,construction of new airportsand upgrading of originalairports were carried out.Consequently, there arenow over 70 airports in thenation including two inter-national airports.

In the water transportsector, there were 13 jettiesto which foreign vessels can

Remarkable progressachieved in striving forimprovement of socio-eco-nomic status of the peoplebased on own resources andstrength can be vividly wit-nessed.

The emergence ofrailroads includingOkshitpin-Kamma railroadthat were built to bringabout equitable develop-ment the length and breadthof the nation can be attrib-utable to genuine goodwilland correct stand of thegovernment. With this con-cept, the entire people areto safeguard those facili-ties for perpetuation whilestriving for improvement oftheir socio-economic sta-tus making better use ofthem.

The Minister for RailTransportation also made aspeech, saying that 320-mile Kyangin-Pakokkurailroad is being con-structed with three sec-tions—110-mile Kyangin-Thayet railroad section,100-mile Thayet-Pwintbyu

railroad section and 110-mile Pwintbyu-Pakokkurailroad section. Of them,38-mile Kyangin-Okshitpin railroad sectionof Kyangin-Thayet railroadsection was opened on 1March 2008 and 35-mileOkshitpin-Kamma railroadsection was opened today,he added.

In his speech, Minister Brig-Gen Kyaw Hsan saidthat only when peace and stability is prevailing in theregion with development of road transportation, willthe regional development tasks be undertaken. Preva-lence of peace and stability, unity, reasoning power andbetter transport are essential for building a modern anddeveloped nation, he added.

Minister Maj-Gen Aung Min explained construc-tion of the railroad for development of regions on thewestern bank of Ayeyawady River, opening of thenewly-built railroad section as a valuable transport routefor the region and the people, and arrangements for giv-ing permission to the local people to ride the train freeof charge for three days in commemoration of the rail-road section opening ceremony.

The meeting ended with concluding remarks bythe General.

At that time, the special train that left Okshitpinrailway station this morning arrived at Kamma station,and the local people welcomed it.

At Thegon, Padaung, Phayapaw, Nyaunggaing andDangaing railway stations along the railroad section,the local people accorded rousing welcome to the train.Deputy Minister U Pe Than and officials presented giftsto the local passengers.

In line with the guidance of the Head of Stateto ensure equitable development of the western re-gions on the west bank of Ayeyawady River simi-lar to that of the river’s eastern bank, MyanmaRailways of the Ministry of Rail Transportation isbuilding 320-mile Kyangin-Pakokku railroad withthree sections—110-mile Kyangin-Thayet railroadsection, 100-mile Thayet-Pwintbyu railroad sec-tion and 110-mile Pwintbyu-Pakokku railroad sec-tion. In Kyangin-Thayet railroad section, 38-mileKyangin-Okshitpin section was opened on 1 March2008, and 35-mile Okshitpin-Kamma section wasinaugurated today. A total of 185 bridges and sixrailway stations were constructed along thesection.

Thanks to construction of Okshitpin-Kamma rail-road section, the local people can travel from Patheinto Kyangin and Kyangin to Kamma through the 222miles long route.

After that, the commander donated K 200,000 eachto Tapon Village middle school (branch), Sagamya Vil-lage post-primary school and Htanaungpaka Villagepost-primary school, a set of computer for Sulegon Vil-lage middle school and publications for village librar-ies. Kidnappers of Britons in Iraq send videoto Baghdad Embassy

LONDON, 22 March — A group thatkidnapped five British men in Iraq nearlytwo years ago has sent a video to theBritish embassy in Baghdad, a spokes-man said Saturday.

The video, which has not been re-leased to the media, features one of thefive men who were captured in May2007, a spokeswoman for the ForeignOffice told AFP.

“I can confirm we have received avideo of one of the British hostages whowas taken in 2007,” she said.

LONDON, 22 March—Explosives experts aresearching an Emirates plane at Gatwick Airport nearLondon, officials said Sunday, after a passenger founda note just before landing saying there was a suspiciousdevice onboard.

Flight EK 011 from Dubai to Gatwick landedsafely after a “a note implying a security threat” wasfound onboard 10 minutes before it touched down, anEmirates spokesman said.

The airline added that the plane was now beinginspected and passengers interviewed.

The incident temporarily closed the airport, one ofthe country’s biggest, but it has since been reopened,Sussex Police said. They added that there was no majordisruption to flights.

“Sussex Police was called at 6.48am (0648 GMT)this morning following a report of a suspicious deviceon board an Emirates flight from Dubai,” they said ina statement.

“The aircraft was safely landed at Gatwick Airportand is currently in a holding area. All passengers andcrew have been evacuated and the EOD (explosiveordnance disposal) is currently carrying out extensivesearches.”—Internet
