Issue 36 Term 4 Week 5 13 November 2019
Good afternoon Parents, Carers and Friends of Greenwich Public School.
Welcome to Week 5 of Term 4. Well we have reached the half way point of Term 4 and our students are extremely busy completing assessments for annual school reports as well as gearing up for the end of year performances. The Schools Spectacular is now only a week away and students are busily practising and polishing their performances. As usual the hard work by Ms Rutherford has ensured that our students sound wonderful. Thank you Ms Rutherford. I am looking forward to seeing them perform next week. This is also the time of year when we have a selection process for the leadership positions for 2020. I have had the pleasure of reading numerous applications and I look forward to the voting process that will take place soon. Last week, our Junior Boys 4x100m relay team came 7th in the 2019 PSSA Athletics final. The Athletics Carnival includes teams from public, private and catholic schools. I am extremely proud of their achievements. Well done boys. Each year a number of our Year 5 and 6 students participate in the Australasian Mathematical Olympiad, a mathematical competition that is held across all educational sectors both nationally and overseas. Greenwich Public School has always performed extremely well in this competition and this year is no exception. I am so delighted to announce that our school has ranked in the top 10% of all competing schools from Australia, and two of our students gained scores in the top 2% with one perfect score. A further eleven of our students ranked in the top 10%. Congratulations to everyone. School Council Our school council and our P&C both work collaboratively with me on differing issues and we have a strong and productive relationship that benefits our school. Over recent years, the agendas of both organisations have at times blended and meetings are often in the same week. With this in mind and moving into the future, we are looking at a new model of operation to ensure that we are as effective and productive as possible for Greenwich Public School. At our last School Council meeting, all the members voted in favour of the following motion: "To propose to call a special general meeting of the school community to pass a motion to wind up the Greenwich Public School Council”.
A letter from school council is attached to this newsletter today to explain the proposal in greater detail. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact a school council member or myself.

Greenwich Band Program in 2020
The Greenwich Band Committee is announcing a change to the Band Program for 2020. This program
has slowly grown over the years, and now incorporates 2 bands, music tutoring and instrument hire. Its
aim has been to encourage the students to learn an instrument and experience the fun of participating in
a band, which is something that they can take with them to high school and beyond.
From the beginning of 2020, Directions In Music, a company run by qualified and experienced music
teachers who specialise in the development of primary school instrumental music programs, will be
responsible for the management of all aspects of the GPS school band program. Their vision is to continue
developing a vibrant and fun program, where every student has an opportunity to learn an instrument in a
supportive and collaborative setting.
Involvement in school performances and festivals will continue as before. The parent run Band Committee
will continue, assisting where necessary, and we invite as always any parent who would like to help to join
us.
Directions in Music will be commencing their involvement soon, with the recruitment of next year’s training
band to start next week with a “Meet the Instruments' Expo” for all year 2 children, plus any years 3-5 who
might be interested in joining the Training Band for 2020. An email will be sent out to Year 2 parents after
the “Meet the Instruments' Expo” with more information about enrolling in the Greenwich Band Program.
Greenwich Public School remains committed to a strong and vibrant band program that encourages a high
quality and fun learning experience for our band members, whilst still being cost effective for parents and
carers.
If you have any questions, feel free to email the Band Committee at [email protected].
NSW PSSA State Athletics Championships
Last Thursday Matteo S, Zane L, Toby C and Conor W competed against the fastest primary schools in
the state at the NSW PSSA Athletics Championships which was held at
Sydney Olympic Park Athletics Centre. This competition combines the
best of government, private, catholic and independent schools.
In five fiercely competitive heats the boys finished 3rd in their heat to
qualify automatically for the semi-finals in the Junior Boys Relay event.
With relatives watching around the world live on YouTube, in their semi-
final, the boys applied the afterburners in their best performance to date,
finishing second to qualify for the final. With little rest between heat and
semi, the boys were tired but gave it their all, proudly representing
Greenwich amongst the fastest nine schools in New South Wales.
They gave it everything they had, finishing 8th in the final. An
exceptional result for a school the size of Greenwich.
Greenwich Public School can be very proud of the efforts, practice
time, behaviour and accomplishments these four boys have achieved
over the last few months.
David C (Coach and GPS Parent)
A huge congratulations must also go to Matteo, who represented the School and Sydney North region in
two individual events!
