Our Monthly Bulletin Nan Chiau Primary School March 2017
Dear Parents,
This year marks a significant milestone for NCPS as we
celebrate our 70th School Anniversary. We have lined up a
series of anniversary celebration activities starting with the
recording breaking knot tying event in January. The next
anniversary celebration event is the SHINES-in-Harmony
Carnival held in Nan Chiau High school on 11 March 2017,
Saturday, to bond together as a family and reflect on our
rich heritage. The celebration continues in the afternoon with the Home-coming Tea
Reunion especially for all our alumni and everyone who likes to participate. We look
forward to you joining us to reminisce the past and rejoice the progress of Nan Chiau.
Looking back, Nan Chiau could not have accomplished so much without the unwavering
support of our parents, alumni, the community and our stakeholders. I am truly grateful for
the strong partnership that we have forged as one family that makes up the Nan Chiau spirit.
On the note of home-school partnership, the school has planned Parent-Teacher-Meeting
(PTM) sessions for P3 to P6 levels on 10 March, Friday, so we can work alongside parents
to bring out the best in our children.
As Term 1 is coming to an end, I hope that every student is coping well in school.
I am very heartened to see that our students
genuinely taking care of one another especially
during buddy programmes. When I walk around
the school, I see our upper primary children
taking care of the younger ones like their own
brothers or sisters. In line with our school value
of Respect and Responsibility, they were able to
respect and look after one another’s well-being.
As the March break approaches, I wish that your family is filled with happiness as you
spend quality time together.

children reach their best potential. For Term 1, the PTM will be held on:
The school recognises the importance of home-school partnership. Should you wish to discuss

NCPS as a “Reading School”
We strive to create a reading culture in school whereby students become engaged and
motivated readers. Every morning, students are encouraged to
bring along a book and read silently for pleasure. We hope our
students will discover the joy of reading.
In NCPS, we have programmes such as T-REX where teachers read
to the P1 and P2 students during morning assembly on Thursdays
and Fridays. Our school principal, Mdm Quah, joins in and reads
to our students too. The students are eager and excited to listen to
this reading session by our teachers.
We will also be implementing buddy reading programme where
selected buddies from the upper primary will guide and read to the younger buddies from the
lower primary.

Achievements
North Zone Primary Schools Basketball Championship 2017
Our school basketball players put up a tough fight during the North Zone Basketball
Championship. Although they did not qualify for the semi-finals, they persevered and did their
very best for every match. Their spirit of resilience and sportsmanship are commendable. Let’s
cheer them on and continue to give them our fullest support!

The CNY Celebration Concert was held during Thursday assembly on 2 Feb 2017. The

P3 Learning Journey to Zoo
The Primary 3 students visited the Singapore Zoo to learn more about the Animal Kingdom as
part of P3 Science Seamless Learning Programme. They were equipped with tablets to capture
digital images of the animal habitat as part of their experiential learning. Through this journey,
the Primary 3 students learned about the different groups of animals and their characteristics
beyond the classroom.
P1-4 Story Telling by Eliza Teoh
The school invited Eliza Teoh, the author of the series “Ellie Belly” to talk about “What a good
writing is”. She shared many tips about what makes a good writing with the students. Many
students were inspired from her talk and were thrilled to get her autograph.
P5-6 Mathematics & Science Workshop for Parents
As we value home-school partnership between teachers and
parents, the school held the P5-6 Mathematics & Science
Workshop in order to let parents understand how their
children learn Mathematics and Science in school. Parents
also get to know the latest Mathematics and Science
curriculum and syllabi. These information equipped the
parents with some skills and techniques to coach their child
at home.

Total Defence Day
Total Defence involves every Singaporean playing a
part, individually and collectively, to build a strong,
secure and cohesive nation. This year’s theme is
‘Together We Keep Singapore Strong’. Our school
commemorated ‘Total Defence Day’ on 15 February
2017.
This year, students
were given a packet
of biscuit for their snack break and reflected on the difficult
times our forefathers had during the Japanese Occupation.
Our students are encouraged to put Total Defence into action
in their daily lives by reaching out to one another, forging
new relationships and strengthening existing ones to keep
Singapore strong and resilient because our greatest strength lies in the unity and resilience of
our people. They learnt that when we are strong as a nation, we are able to deal with any crisis
and challenges that come along the way. Students also met up with buddies and worked
together to complete many different activities planned for them.
Cyber Wellness Activity
As ICT is an integral part of the learning environment, cyber wellness education is essential in
ensuring the positive well-being of internet users. As part of the cyber wellness education
programme, cyber wellness recess activities were conducted to equip our students with life-
long social-emotional competencies and sound values so that they can become safe, respectful
responsible users of ICT. Posters and activities educated internet users on the norms of
appropriate use and raised awareness of how to protect oneself and others from the risks of
harmful online behaviour.
Parents can continue the cyber wellness education at home with resources from this cyber
wellness portal http://ict.moe.edu.sg/cyberwellness. This portal has resources to educate
students, parents and educators on ways to keep stay safe on the internet.

Science@Recess
This term’s Science@Recess aims to introduce the students
with the concept of Mass and Density. Students are able to
understand the mass of an object with different density
through hands-on activities. Science@Recess also provided a
platform for students to know more about Healthy Eating, so
that they are able to identify different categories of food in
terms of the nutrients.
