We would like to thank those that took the time to send us their feedback. The Our Lady of the Rosary School Board have decided to opt-in to this scheme in 2020. This means: We will not ask for a donation of $20 per student per term for terms 2,3 and 4. We will not request contributions to assist in covering curriculum expenses. The school can still request a contribution to any activity that has an overnight component, including the Intermediate overnight camp. The school can still accept any donations made to the school at any time, for which you will be able to claim tax credits for donations as you currently can for any contributions you make. Please note: Any sports fees that students opt into would still require payment of associated fees (Touch, Netball, Basketball etc). This will not change. This decision does not affect the attendance dues that are payable to the Archdiocese of Wellington. These are still to be paid. It is exciting to see five great candidates put themselves up for selection for the two parent representative seats. We urge you all to vote and to send your voting paper into the school office. It is a big thing to put yourself out there and we thank all the candidates for putting themselves forward to be considered, good luck to all. • St Bernard’s Science Visit 2019 Last Thursday some awesome St Bernard’s boys came and taught us some basic science. We looked at why folded paper flowers open in a dish of water (try it! It’s really cool!), mixing chemicals to make coloured chemicals - and then straining them apart again, dry ice (my favourite - when you put the ice between two spoons it vibrates the spoons, when you put it in a small container and shake it the lid pops off, and when you put it in pure alcohol it STEAMS LOTS! The next station was about light - pinhole telescopes and light refraction glasses. The next station was making periscopes with a net and mirrors. Then we looked at basic electrical circuits and what was ‘conductive’. The last station was looking at how you could separate the mixture of three things -dried peas, sand and black sand (hint: black sand is magnetic and the peas could be taken out with a sieve) At that station we also played with AWESOME huge metal slinkys (which happened to be CONDUCTIVE!!) It was really cool, and I look forward to being one of those St Bernard’s boys next year! By Thomas van der Gulik

EPro 8 Challenge—student voice: Jessie: I had a really good experience with the epro8 challenge, I was in a great team with Japji, Elsie & Jasneet. The epro8 challenge is an engineering problem solving innovation challenge for Intermediates in the Wellington region. You get a booklet with the 4 different challenges in a trolley to complete in the given time. Japji: I had a blast at the epro8 challenge. It was a challenging experience for me and my team of friends. We had a lot of fun working with the equipment and bu-liding the structure. Each team had been given a station to work at. They had given us metal poles, connectors to connect the poles together, screws / screwdrivers etc. Elsie: I am so glad I got picked for epro8, at first I wasn’t sure I was smart enough but when it came down to it, it was really fun doing all the engineering and building. All the teams got a trolley of the tools and gear they could use, there was every-thing from metal poles to a timer for testing. I had a great team and would definite-ly recommend it to others. Jasneet: It was fun going to the epro8 challenge with my group of friends. Without them I wouldn't be able to survive at all. We had stations of our own to work on. There were an awful lot of tools which I wasn’t sure of. Looking back I actually knew them after all. This opportunity will be a great for others who are good with work-ing as a team and who think out of the box!
