Music is alive and well at OLRS!

OLRS School-wide Wednesday Music Programme: Our Wednesday music programme continues in Level 2. The young musicians are rotating their lessons in blocks of two or three Wednesdays in a row, in order to accommodate everyone wanting to learn ukulele or jam on their guitars. Favourite songs of our beginner players are ‘Siva, Siva’, ‘How much is that Doggy in the Window’ and other such classics like 'On Top of Spaghetti', 'Cups' and 'Stand By Me'.

Players who have been learning for a year or two or three or four with Lucy are learning to read 'tab' music, lead in songs and find their strumming rhythms. Some of these children recently played at their very first school Mass. For our most senior group, they have begun learning how to compose their own songs.

Nga Waiata Manu, (our choir made up of year 3-8 children) is supported greatly by Helen Willberg and Barb Egan. During level 2, the choir is split into two and coming on a fortnightly rota. We are working on a beautiful gospel song and a couple of uplifting pieces from the Trolls and Brave movies.

Junior singing is taking place in a 'tour' fashion where I pop into each class and sing favourite songs with them. Lots of fun. A similar system was started with the rest of the school for their syndicate singing - this is just a level 2 adaptation of whole syndicate singing.

We hope that you're hearing some ukulele or guitar playing at home from our students and maybe a choir song being hummed or sung at random moments! We also hope to be able to share our learning this year with you all at some point in some fashion.

Thank you for encouraging your music learner. The benefits of learning music are incredibly far reaching.

Lucy Ryan

A BIG THANK YOU to you Archie for your letter to remind us all how important it is that we support the Wellington Free Ambulance to keep all our special tamariki like you safe. We will all be wearing our Onesie or PJ’s on Friday. You are an inspiration to us all. Thank you. Mrs Surynt-Tapiki
