The Catholic Church is the Church founded by Jesus Christ; it is the same Church mentioned in the New Testament of the Christian Bible. The term "Catholic" means "according to the whole;" it was used early in the Church's history to distinguish her from a number of other gatherings whose teachings and practices were not true to the authoritative teachings of Christ's apostles. All human persons are invited and encouraged to accept the salvation offered by Jesus through His one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church by living the sacramental life offered by the Catholic Church. It is the mission of Our Lady of the Prairie Catholic Church to offer this life to the people of Belle Plaine, Minnesota and its environs. If you would like to become Catholic, please contact Fr. Brian Lynch in person or by email at: [email protected].

4th Sunday of Advent December 23, 2018

THE WAITING IS ALMOST OVER

The season of Advent is almost over as we have spent this time in preparation for the birth of Jesus. Yet it really has started on March 25th, the Annunciation, which is 40 weeks before Christmas. A baby is 40 weeks in the womb of the mother. Think of Noah in the ark for 40 days, the Israelites traveling for 40 years to the promised Land, and then Jesus spending 40 days in prayer before He began His public life. That is why the number 40 is so important in the Scriptures. One of the traditions for our churches and in some of our homes is the Nativity scene. This tradition really didn't start until St. Francis of Assisi set up the first one on Christmas Eve in 1223, and only after he got permission from the pope. This was not a scene with statues that we use today, but it was in a cave with animals and their feeding troughs-turned crib. He told a friend "I want to do something that will recall the memory of that Child who was born in Bethlehem, to see with bodily eyes the inconveniences of His infancy, how He lay in a manger and how the ox and ass stood by." Christmas trees began with the 8th century St. Boniface, who converted the pagan Germans. They saw their great evergreens as sacred because the trees did not shed their needles or appear to die in the winter like other trees. St. Boniface taught them to worship, not the evergreen tree, but Christ who died on a tree, because of His love for us. Many centuries later Prince Albert, who was of German descent and married Britain's Queen Victoria, brought the custom to England, and from there it spread to other lands. For some of us, Christmas is a time to get together for story telling, family traditions and past histories of our families. Some are bittersweet, such as the WWI Christmas in 1914, when a truce was called and both sides put down their arms and celebrated Christmas together. For some of us, Christmas is a time of loneliness as we have lost some of our family members. Words cannot lessen the hurt, but if we turn to Mary the Mother of Sorrows, she will understand our hurt and sorrows and hopefully give us some comfort. Remember, she was grieving greatly when her Son Jesus died, and when she held Him in her arms for the last time. And so, I wish each and every one of you a very Merry and Blessed Christmas. PEACE, Deacon Bob Raleigh

QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTION (QCD) Do you pay income taxes? Do you make contributions to your church or other charitable organizations? Are you 70 ½ years old and have a RMD (Required Minimum Distribution) from a traditional IRA? If you answered yes to all these questions, then you may wish to consider a Qualified Charitable Distribu-tion (QCD) from your traditional IRA to save yourself income tax-

es.

With the new Tax Cuts and Jobs Act that was passed for 2018, for many it will be more difficult to itemize deductions. If you are single and over 65, the Standard deduction is $13,600. If you are Married and both over 65, the Standard deduction is $26,600. This large increase in the Standard deduction is making it harder to itemize your deductions. Therefore, if you don’t itemize because you don’t have enough deductions to get over the Standard deduction, you won’t receive a federal tax benefit for writing out that check to a charitable organization. However, you can elect to have all or part of your RMD go directly to a charitable organization and this amount is not included in your taxable income on your Form 1040. To do a Qualified Charita-ble Distribution (QCD), you must fill out the paperwork with the holder of your Traditional IRA to make this donation. If you feel this option is right for you, or you would like to know more, please talk to your tax advisor on the benefits of a Qualified Charitable Distribution (QCD) for your tax situation.
